voiced my unasked-for opinion on Lego, cub art and countless TV animations...so I may as well add Pokemon to the list. :3\n\n...And now's a good time to do this, considering the release of Pokemon Sword/Shield is just o'er the horizon! :D\n\n...Of course, that means something different for me than for most Pokey-persons, as my interest is less (much less) in the video games and more in the trading card game (TCG).\nBasically, for me, a new generation means more cards ...to look at, since I don't play the game so much anymore. Still, I like the cards, esp. the Pikachu cards (yeah, I like Pikachu---perhaps a little too much---but that's a different topic).\n\n*ahem*\n\nMy history with the Pokemon video games is short: I bought Red, Blue, Yellow and Silver together with a GameBoy. This was a yard-sale find (anyone remember yard sales?), bought for only $5 (not joking)!\n\nThe battery in the Silver game had died (which meant I couldn't save my progress), but the batteries of the older games (incongruously) worked ...So before inevitably flipping the package on eBay, I endeavored to play the games. :3\n\nI'm unsure exactly when I had this experience. I was living in an apartment at the time, so the most recent it could have been is 2014. Regardless, these were the first digital Pokemon games I'd ever played---long overdue and very simple.\n\n...And the games were incredibly easy. For Blue, I beat it using (mostly) the Nidoking line. For Red: the Charizard line. For Yellow, I used only the Pikachu I started with (save, of course, for Pokemon required to use TMs for progressing through the maps).\nOn that note, I'm a level grinder---in each instance, I had exceeded level 30 before challenging Brock, so I pretty much OHKO'd all who opposed me. =^..^=\n\nAnd that was that. :3\n\nEven so, when new Pokemon games would come about, I would sometimes think it would be fun to invest in the device/console and the game---just for fun/to see if Pokemon got better with time (beyond graphics).\n...But I could never bring myself to do it. It's not the money, but the fact that I'm adept at talking myself out of large purchases---the games just don't appeal to me, much as I want them to.\n\nI'm a man approaching his 40th orbit---I'm old, cynical, and have been traumatized time and again by one thing or another, leaving me with a deep chronic depression. It's for this reason I want so much for Pokemon (or anything, really) to mean something to me---the Pokemon TCG was the last thing I felt GENUINE, un-ironic enthusiasm for; Pokemon was the last material thing that I can say brought me joy before the weight of the world crushed my soul. I suppose that's the reason I still follow Pokemon's progress, even if only as a bystander.:(\n\nAnyway, I look at the new games with much dismay---perhaps even with bitterness.\n\nGRAPHICS: They try too hard ...or not hard enough. Seriously, I can't tell.\n\nOn one paw, the Pokemon/trainers look like they do in the anime ...which is good, save for one thing: video games cannot emote (and when they try, it's creepy).\nFor example, in the anime, a trainer can express confidence, fear, confusion, etc., because the proper countenances and postures are given them by the animators to reflect the scenarios the characters find themselves in.\nVideo games rely on repeating character animations over and over, which only incidentally correspond to what's happening around the subject/s.\nThe effect in the games is (say) Pikachu will look the same/convey the same countenance regardless if it's standing against a humble Rattata or an angry Machamp----Pikachu will just rock back and forth with its unchanging eyes, waiting either to be gently nipped or punched to smithereens (it's all the same to him).\n\nThe old pixel games didn't have this problem as the sprites were so basic they effectively required the player to decide how the characters feel. But, where the graphics are anime-quality, my brain expects the work to be done for me ...and it isn't. :P\n\nLast, I dislike how fur, skin, rock, etc., all look like they're made from the same rubberlike synthetic material in these games.\nGranted, there isn't much texture in anime (either), yet the games have more 'depth' and light/shade variations than the cartoons, so (again) my brain expects something that isn't there.\n\nGAMEPLAY: Granted, my experience here is vicarious, but then one needn't eat the entire ice cream cone to know its flavor. :3\n\nThey're all the same, or (at least) mostly so---play one mainline Pokemon game, you've played them all (what's essentially a game of 'rock paper scissor' can only be so varied/complex ...esp. if, like me, you max the timer out level grinding before your first gym/major opponent).\n\nGranted, I'm a casual fan of classic MegaMan, and anyone who knows what those games are about can apply what I've just said about Pokemon to MegaMan ...and you'd be right (so maybe I'm a hypocrite there)?! XD\n\nMoving on...\n\nMOST EVERYTHING I'VE READ/WATCHED ABOUT SWORD/SHIELD: ...All right, I'm gonna lose some watchers over this one, but here goes...\n\n*goes to YT; types \"Pokemon Sword\" into search bar*\n\n...\"uploaded 2 hours ago\"\n\nI don't think I've ever seen a video (on the top of the list) over ten hours old on this subject ...Granted, I do not search every day and, moreover, some of the videos I've clicked did contain useful information, but most I've seen have been meritless: chipper and enthusiastic (perhaps to a fault, in some cases), but useless/redundant insofar as *information.\n\n*which given today's news, Nintendo doesn't want us sharing. :P\n\nIn short, the PokeTube community is overselling the game.\n\n...And on that note, it seems the more we learn about Sword/Shield, the less we wish we knew.\nA great example would be the limited roster for these new games, coupled with the need to have both versions, in addition to copies of the (unrelated?) Pikachu and Eevee games, to get the full Sword/Shield experience (which could cost over $200) ...and all four games need to be bought by the first week of January 2020 to unlock the 'extras'.\n\nGreedy much, Nintendo?\n\n..Ah, yeah---the roster. Ok, first... as much as I like Pokemon, the franchise's gone on FAR too long.\nIt's not that I don't like Pokemon anymore (c'mon, I draw myself naked with Pikachu---you can't say I don't like it!), but I get the impression its creators/developers have progressively cared less and less, esp. in regard to character/monster designs. ...Pokemon's just kinda gone the way of The Simpsons, Arthur, and other media that refuses to die.\n\nReturning to the roster, there's just too many Pokemon to play in one game (even if you ultimately buy all four for the full experience, you're yet playing only one game), at least competitively.\nThere's almost a thousand Pokemon now, of which most players will play with only a pawful. Even more so, while I get the frustration (said frustration being the principle of the thing), the fact is Sword/Shield introduces a new generation ...and by that virtue (or consequence, depending which side you're on), the new generation is/should be the focus ...otherwise, why bother?\n\nCURRY: ...Ok, shopping for outfits to customize my avatar/trainer is one thing, but ...I'm not making curry---that's where I draw the line. I mean, what's next---selecting items for gift baskets? C'mon! XD\n\nI mean, I like to think my pink, dancing Pokemon and I are badass (yeah, we're fooling no one, but still)---we're out in the deep woods SURVIVING, surviving on roast spearow and other game Pokemon, as we endure and battle our way to the next gym (ah, the joys of childhood!).\n...The point is, we're not making curry (esp. not the PERFECT CURRY---if you insist, just give us a Knorr packet and some hot water---we'll make magic with that! GEEZE!)! D:\n\nRant over---hopefully the next TCG expansion will include some cool artwork of the new Pokemon (Cinderace ...isn't as bad as i thought it'd be ...and I kinda like that blue Pokemon from the trailer, that looks like an icicle).\n\n:3","description_bbcode_parsed":"I voiced my unasked-for opinion on Lego, cub art and countless TV animations...so I may as well add Pokemon to the list. :3

...And now's a good time to do this, considering the release of Pokemon Sword/Shield is just o'er the horizon! :D

...Of course, that means something different for me than for most Pokey-persons, as my interest is less (much less) in the video games and more in the trading card game (TCG).
Basically, for me, a new generation means more cards ...to look at, since I don't play the game so much anymore.
