Everyone loves comments, right? Indeed, so let's look into them!\n\nFirst, let's consider comments from the commenter's end: why leave a comment at all? What can/should one comment?\n\nGenerally, the comments I leave are of the \"Cute!; Nice!\" variety. As of late, I've forsook the use of letters entirely, leaving only heart or kitty-face icons as comments. \"<3 :3\"\n\nWhy?\n\nKitties and hearts are generally safe, to begin with.\n\nFrom my end, I would be looking at a piece of art made by someone I don't know. This would be fine if the artist left a description or tags, but many do not.\nHence I can say nothing to the artist (I don't know them), or even to the upload itself (I don't know its purpose), hence my comment is negated to \"Nice\" (or something synonymous), as it's simply a text incarnation of the word that came to mind upon my viewing of the upload (therefore, my comment is merely my thinking aloud).\n\n\"Aw! Marten is shy!\"\n\nNo! D:\n\nThere is much a commenter has to consider. By commenting, I am (effectively) bringing myself into the commentee's awareness ...along with my art/profile information. This, too, needn't be a bad thing: I want my art to be seen, after all, but first impressions are everything ...therefore, comments given to strangers (esp. on something as personal as their art) must be made with care.\n\nIt's difficult to describe my thoughts without visual aids, and I don't want to 'use' any friends (or strangers) as examples... so I'm going to use one of my own uploads and pretend it isn't mine, that am I'm viewing it for the first time.\n\nLet's use this one: https://sta.sh/0mgltbc6dma\n\nSay I ran across this on the 'Recent Uploads' page. I like the cartoon: it's 'humble', certainly, but I like it! ...Should I say so?\n\nI neither know the artist nor the character depicted: is it an OC? Is it fan art? The upload is without tags and description. Hm.\n\nI could ask a question, \"Who is this character?\" ...but do I really want to know? Moreover, am I interested in conversation with the artist?\nThat sounds bad, but a conversation is a commitment, and waiting around for replies is tedious, unless I know the person I'm corresponding with. ...but let's say I risk it!\n\nPossible risks/scenarios:\n\nMARTEN: \"I like this design; Is this your 'sona? :3\"\n\nARTIST: \"Yup! I'm glad you like them! I have a bio for them: (link to a wall of text longer than most of my animation reviews ...combined!). Please tell me what you think!\"\n\nARTIST2: \"Not mine. Do you take requests? (gallery is otherwise full of pornography)\"\n\nRANDOMCOMMENTER \"This isn't their upload! It was stolen! The original is here: (a link to drama)\"\n\nIgnorance is bliss! :D\n\nI look again at the drawing. I like it, but would like it more if the artist were, say, a bit more competent with a pencil. Maybe I could interject my opinion on how the artist could improve ...except that's the absolute most froward thing one could do! ^^;\n\nIt's likely the artist knows they're unskilled (we're our own worst critics) and doesn't require another to point out their shortcomings.\nEven if the critique extended is replete with praise and is soft on how-to's/suggestions, such comments aren't expected, and may put pressure on the artist (or, worse, intimidate them).\n\nPossible risks:\n\nMARTEN: \"Nice piece, but I noted something you could do to improve it (blah-blah-blah)\"\n\nARTIST: \"Um, excuse me, but who are you and how did you find my upload?\"\n\nARTIST2: \"This is my friend's OC---she's supposed to look like that\"\n\nARTIST3: \"Thanks?\"\n\nARTIST4: \"(says nothing, but adds me to their block list)\"\n\nAwkward ...and (again) by commenting I'm exposing my own artwork---and I'm not, to put it lightly, the most talented artist out there (and-Matt 7:5 is a thing). ^^;\nIt's not that we artists (our respective levels of skill notwithstanding) cannot learn/benefit from one another, but unless I'm willing to accept critique (I'm not!) I shouldn't offer any.\n\nI look once more, but perhaps not for the last time. I decide I'll not offer critique, but will go for some Sister-Wendy interpretation.\n\nPossible risk:\n\nMARTEN: \"The character stands holding his ice cream bar. His countenance is one of awe, as if admiring the mark---the bite--he has left upon it. The character thinks himself an artist, and from our perspective, the character is himself a work of art.\nThis piece is an example of art within art. We, too, are an extension of this idea: art gazing upon art, for we are all the work of the greatest Creator of all!\"\n\nARTIST: \"wtf?\"\nMARTEN: \"Pearls before swine!\"\nARTIST: \"@#%$ off!\"\n\nARTIST2: \"Do you like it?\"\n\nARTIST3: \"Help please to understand; English is not my language\"\n\nToo many words spoil the alphabet soup ...Wait, what?\n\nAnyway, I look again at the drawing, with reconsideration of what to leave as a comment. I like the traditional medium.... Maybe it's safe to comment on that?\n\nPossible risk:\n\nMARTEN: \"Ah, cool! I like traditional art; digital is far too common these days. Thank you for keeping the medium alive!\"\n\nARTIST: \"My tablet broke; I'm working extra hours to replace it\"\n\n...\n\nI take yet another look at the drawing ...Yes, I know better, but this cartoon has my furry senses tingling! Maybe I could comment with something cheeky (clean, but fun)?\n\nPossible risks/scenario:\n\nMARTEN: \"I like the paws!\"\n\nARTIST: \"So do I! ...Your art is HOT! Let's have our OCs 'meet' each other (link to a Discord with an obscenity in the title)!\"\n\nARTIST2: \"Ok. I'm 13, btw\"\n\nARTIST3: \"Furry trash! Get the #@%$ outta here with your fetish #@%$!!!\"\n\n...Yeah, sometimes it's best to say nothing. Still, leaving a comment is tempting, so I leave a kitty-face icon in place of an actual comment.\n\nPossible outcomes:\n\nMARTEN: \":3\"\n\nARTIST: \"(replies with a cheerful, animated emoji)\"\n\nARTIST2: \"Glad you like it!\"\n\nARTIST3 \"OMG! I love your art! (adds to watch list)\"\n\nKitty faces for the win! :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3 :3\n\nOn its own, a kitty face is meaningless. When used as a comment, it can serve as an 'invitation' and/or as a sign of interest/awareness on the part of the commenter. The outcome, then, is determined by the recipient.\n\nAnd now what about the commentee---the one who receives the comments?\n\nAgain, I use myself as the example. What kinds of comments do I receive? What do I expect/want from comments?\n\nGenerally, I receive more notifications than comments, \"(User has added X-upload to their favorites)\", etc. As for actual comments, most are similar to the comments I sow, \"Aw!\"; \"Cute\"; \"Good job!\", etc.\n\nSuch comments are impersonal and ask for nothing (save, perhaps, a thank-you). :3\n\nThen, there are comments that show more specific interest (questions), as well those contributing to (and/or made in response to) something in the drawing/its description.\nThese comments are less common, and are, generally, left by users I know well (and are a joy to see)!\n\nAs for what I 'want' from comments... I don't really know. ^^;\n\nI suppose to answer that, I'd need to ask why I make art to begin with. Aside from the cliche 'to express myself' reply, I'd say it's to be part of the community/-ties I'm part of (even if only tentatively).\n\nUsers like having fan art and even original stuff to riffle through: art made by persons who not only share similar interests, but are ACCESSIBLE.\nI, as a provider of fan art, contribute to the pool of uploads fans of my subjects can look at/add to their collections. I like that idea, hence my output---receiving faves/comments encourages me to do more.\n\nIt's not so much the quality of the comment, but the fact a comment (and a pair of eyes) was received at all. A pageview is nice, but may be nicer if a user/person comes attached to it (a comment provides this).\n\nSuch is my opinion, anyway. :3","description_bbcode_parsed":"<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>Comments.
