Nyarai was no longer sure how long it had been. The mission she was sent on had extended in both distance and elapsed time due to the target having been spooked and was now on the road, traveling as far, and as fast, as possible. As a result, Nyarai had to pursue him, on foot, while he had an entire caravan of horses to carry him out of harms reach. Infuriated, the feline assassin finally, in a fit of sweat drenched fury and hurt pride, snapped, and tossed her bow and quiver to the bow. There, in the middle of no-man's land, more than a fort night of travel from her home, Nyarai began punching a dead tree repeatedly, in pure agonized anger at her failure. She couldn't go on like this. For the first time since she was a complete rookie to this job, she had to tell her employer that the target had escaped. And knowing the Queen, she'd not be happy.\nOnce she had extracted her fury on the tree, until the rotten trunk snapped in two, and sweat dripped from her matted fur like she had been in the midst of a downpour, she got up, and began packing her things, when she heard hoof falls in the distance.\nThey grew louder, and louder, until a shimmer of monochrome fur appeared on the horizon. She squinted her eyes, and saw that it was a zebra. A lone zebra, way out here in the Aldnaran Steppe? It was suicide! She shook her head at the idiotic animal's deathwish and continued to pack her belongings for the march back home in bitter defeat, when she realized that the trampling hooves were now downright shaking the ground under her. She looked up again, and saw the biggest, most powerful zebra that she had ever seen. He was absolutely massive, dwarfing her several times over. He was coming straight for her, and finally, when he was close enough, she saw that he was pursued by two cheetah men, running at full sprint behind it. The zebra passed her, but for some inexplicable reason even to herself, she stepped in between the hunters and their prey. They were of her kind, but they were outsiders, that much she knew; she'd never seen them before in her life. Exiled hunters, probably for hunting in a dishonorable fashion, such as this they were doing now.\n\"Halt!\" She said in a commanding tone, and to her private surprise, the two hunters stopped dead in their tracks. They frowned at the sweat drenched, unkempt, and barely dressed woman before them. \"Another Ndogo, this far out?\" They said in their native language, the language she'd grown up with.\n\"Yes, for my own reasons. You are hunting an animal by running it ragged, then killing it when it's too tired to defend itself? Have you no shame? Men of my kind who can't even stand up to prey and give it a fighting chance? Such is our ways!\"\nThe two men stared at her, looked at each other, then laughed heartily at her. She didn't move a muscle. \"Little girl. We don't know who you are, or why you're here, but our prey is getting away, and you're in the way, so kindly move, or we'll settle for your body as a satisfactory consolation prize.\"\nNyarai looked at them with almost pity on her face, before, without a second thought, she stood behind them, and their bodies fell to the floor, blood gushing from deep gashes in their throats, blood having spilled so rapidly that by the time they hit the ground, they were already dead. Her bone dagger sat in her grip, dripping blood steadily. Without another glance at the corpses, she walked back to her things and resumed packing. By the time she was near done, she recognized the more steady fall of hooves near her. She looked up to see the massive zebra having returned to her side, his majestic head held low in a sort of respectful bow. She stood up and touched the enormous head, petting him gently. \"I apologize for my former tribesmens behavior, strong one. They have paid the price for their dishonorable conduct. May you ride free, until death takes you, and your soul finds rest in the eternal highlands.\" She turned back to her backpack, intent on completing it, but heard the rhythmic fall of hooves behind her as she began to walk. The zebra was following her. Growing annoyed with these interruptions, she turned around to see him standing directly behind her. frowning, she was poised to yell at him, to scare him away since her calm words did not dispel him. But then she had an idea...He was strong, fast, and fit. More than enough to carry her. Carry her straight to her target. Smiling, she walked around him to try and mount him, but he resisted, moving away from her with a neigh of refusal. Confused, she looked to the floor, only to discover the reason for his refusal.
