The Jarl's wits were at an end. How many feasts, how many diplomatic visits must be ruined by his son's unwillingness to obey him? Desperate, the Jarl recalled his best tracker, a grizzled veteran who has an unusual talent for sniffing out rebels and beasts alike.
The old Wolf reluctantly obeyed his Jarl and returned to the city. The next time Aerik attempted to ditch his retinue, he was caught instantly, crawling through the servant's quarters. And the time after that, the Tracker was waiting for him at the end of an improvised rope the boy made out of bed sheets and curtains. Implacable, he always brings Aerik back to his father without mercy.
This has led the squirrely little wolf to try to bribe him, the same way he's bribed some of his more astute bodyguards before, but the old soldier is not so easily seduced. He seems to be firmly in control of his emotions and body, and refuses to let his lust get in the way of his duties.
It doesn't take the clever boy long to find an alternative route though: every month or so, the tracker disappears for a few nights, giving some excuse for his absence. The Jarl doesn't know, but the other guards cover for him by keeping Aerik in a locked room for the duration. Unfortunately, the third time it happened, the Jarl's heir was prepared for it, and had one of his secret lovers smuggle him a key.
That evening however, instead of spending the night with his friends, the little escapee goes directly to the old tracker's quarters, and stealthily follows the Wolf out as the sun sets: if there's a weakness to be exploited, some leverage to be gained...
But as he turns a dark street corner, the full moon reveals itself, and so does his dutiful bodyguard, his form changing, his body growing to monstruous proportions before the scared little wolf. Pinned against a wall before he can run, he listens to the Werewolf's strangled words with growing terror:
"I could smell you from leagues away. Shhhhhhh. Since you know my secret, perhaps it's time to accept your previous offer, little prince. Nooo - it's too late to change your mind now..."
