In space, taking inventory is critical for survival. With limited tools, resources, and even supplies, survival in a vacuum can be very challenging.
For a prison, being stuck with a faulty air-supply system and a ton of rowdy prisoners is a recipe for trouble. You'd have to be crafty and come up with unique ways to survive in such remote locations and tense groups of people.
One of the staff members came up with an ingenious solution: instead of relying on a big, overly-complex life support system, they can use multiple smaller, simpler-designed systems instead. Facility staff get the luxury of space suits with their own environmental controls, while prisoners are limited to a helmet and minimal air input.
Standard prisoners get barely enough air to breathe comfortably. Maximum security prisoners "are reduced to minimal life preservation" - breathing will be very difficult, but there is still enough to remain alive.
Each prison tube has an on-board computer that monitors the status of the prisoner, alongside the standard vital signs, they can regulate feeding, waste disposal, and are also programmed to reward or punish prisoners as well.
For example, if a prisoner struggles for a prolonged period (EG: 2 minutes), the computer will reduce their air supply until the prisoner calms down, or passes out from panic. On the other end, if they stay still for 10 minutes, the bag will harden and sexually stimulate the prisoner.
Prisoner helmets come with a programmable lens to change visibility.
They are transparent on the outside but smoked on the inside, making it hard for the wearer to see anything from the inside out. Helmets can be mirrored on the inside so a prisoner can only see their own face.
There is also a hypnotic screen feature, but that is reserved for prisoners that are contracted or sentenced for more specific reasons.
Finally, in the name of safety and peace of mind for both staff and prisoners, the tubes feature soundproof glass and zero gravity.

As for the group shown here, after a mission went horribly wrong, Anastasia, Hikari, Sydney, Kioshi, and several others have been sentenced to be bound with restricted air support.
Luce, Clarissa Iris, Hannah, Mayumi, and Alex were also part of the group. Some were part of the team, others have been dragged in thanks to some false evidence, while the rest were simply at the wrong place at the wrong time.
Due to some drama and mishaps in the court (including fabricated evidence from a rogue party, and a warrant for the operation with much stronger evidence), the team will have to serve a reduced sentence of 12 months, but can be released within 3 months if they serve their time with good behavior.
Given how the prison's system works, I'm sure some of them may prefer to stay for the full sentence anyways...

Aside from being a penitentiary, this facility can sometimes accept prisoners and subjects for other reasons. Such niche endeavors can help boost profits for the facility itself, and given how its location is not technically within the local jurisdictional area, it is thus exempted from a few interstellar laws.
For Taylor's case, she is subjected to a couple experiments that study the effects of aphrodisiac gas. Her test will keep going "until she breaks", whenever that will be...
Cam, on the other hand, is to be "tortured" with both low oxygen and instant simulation. Normally, Cam could just simply teleport out in case of an emergency like this, but he (or she, currently at least) and the client have mutually agreed for Cam to partake in this session.
As for the third tube, the client responsible has put their prisoner, a Nora Anderson, on the dreaded "Max Torture" setting: low oxygen, instant stimulation, aphrodisiac gas, hypnotic lens, and maybe another feature or two designed specifically to her. We have no specifics on what this client's intentions are, but we know they're enjoying the look on poor Nora's face...
