When Knuckles was a teenager, Chaos Control happened and he was sent to Planet Earth along with the Master Emerald shrine and swore to protect it, despite not being on Mobius anymore. His main task was to find the missing Chaos Emeralds and he set out to find them so him and his friends could get back to Mobius. During his hunt for the Chaos Emeralds, Knuckles came across a young Echidna-bat, named Maia, who was holding a Chaos Emerald in his hand. He approached her in a defensive manner and Maia, who was afraid of his intimidating nature, handed the emerald over before running in the opposite direction. Knuckles ran after her and flattered her by saying that she was quite a skilled treasure hunter and asked her to join him on searching for the emeralds.
