"writing": "[Desclaimer: I have never written a story before, but I wanted to try and give it a shot. I am always open to feedback so I can improve.]\n\nChild of Two Worlds: Chapter 1\n\nThe mine is dark, only lit by the occasional lanterns or industrial lighting. The sound of mining equipment running, collecting ore from the tunnel walls. The workers that fill the tunnel all belong to the fox like Or'chin species with their earthy tones in their fur caked with dirt as they work. While most of the Or'chin are adults, a few children can be seen working alongside them in their toil and none by choice. \n\nOne child works alongside two others as they struggle to push an old mine cart that had apparently been built before hover technology was invented. ``Why-*erk* isn't it moving?'' The boy says, muscles straining as he and the other's push ``It doesn't even have anything in it!'' Fangs showing at the seemingly immovable mine cart.\n\n``I don't know Turin, maybe one of the wheels are broken.'' The other boy says showing his own fangs ``Whatever the reason, if we don't get the cart back to the overseers are going to have our hides and I don't plan on spending any more time in the box for something I can't even control!''.\n\nThe three of them turn their attention up toward the top of the mine shaft. Over them they see the figure of the reptilian Vrek walking the elevated walkway on patrol. Turin and the other's duck down and try to look busy.\n\n``I just don't understand why they would attack Vermonty.'' Turin says his jaw tight.\n\n ``Probably because they wanted cheap labor and Vermonty isn't exactly a military stronghold or anything.'' Says one of the other boys. ``Its bad enough they had to take over our planet of farmers, but then they decided to rejuvenate us for some reason. Why?'' \n\n``Easier to control if I had to guess. For me I was injured when they took over and they thought I was fit enough to work but when they came to get me and my parents from our farm but I ended up injured.'' Turin said looking to the ground and tries not to remember.\n\n The sound of the invaders yelling for their cooperation before opening fire, killing his parents and wounding him. The sound of his parents screams still haunts him. Turin's lower lip begins to quiver and tears form as he tries not to cry at the memory of losing his parents. ``Damn this child's body.''\n\nA loud -clang- can be heard from up above causing them all to duck instinctively. ``Get back to work Or'chin nevta or I'll throw you all in the box!'' This guttural command echoes in the shaft as the reptilian calls them vermin in its native tongue.\n\n ``We- we're trying sir, but the cart won't move.'' says one of the boys while avoiding eye contact. That never goes well.\n\n The Vrek guard shows his fangs with malice ``No excuses, GET BACK TO WORK!'' \n\nThe three Or'chin rejuves return to their task of trying to move the cart but still to no avail. ``Look out kids, we've got you.'' an adult Or'chin says as he and a few other Or'chin slaves come forward and start to help pushing the cart and finally make progress.\n\nBefore long the cart is where it needs to be, just in time for an announced break for the Or'chin laborers. They all begin to move toward the central chamber of the underground mine, the single most spacious area which houses the mines refining equipment, before its sent to the surface for further processing.\n\nOn one side of the chamber is where the cafeteria is located, if you could call it that. Its nothing more then a few cooking stations where the Or'chin line up to get their carefully measured portions but calling the stuff they make food, is being generous.\n\nTurin splits off from the other boys after they get their food. He makes his way over to his usual spot where a group of adults are sitting. They opened their little group up to some of the rejuves since the early days of their working in the mine a little over a year ago.\n\n``Here, Turin.'' Calls out one of the men named Varl. ``Saved you your usual spot, lad.''\n\n``You know I don't like being called `lad', Varl.'' Turin pouts, brow knitted ``You know I-``.\n\n``Used to be an adult but you got rejuvenated, yes, I know you tell me every time I call you `lad.''' Varl says having heard the complaint before. ``I'm sorry, Turin. Its just hard not to call you that because I see you as you are physically. A kid. You have all your memories and I know you still think like an adult but its just hard to see past what's in front of me. I'm not trying to demean you.'' Varl says in a calm tone, genuinely sympathetic to the boys plight.\n\nTurin exhales through his nose ``I know. It's just so frustrating. I'm not opposed to rejuvenation technology but when you don't get to have a say and didn't do anything to deserve it, it drives me crazy.'' He says not looking up from his food, or what is supposed to be food. ``Then you throw in that I'm a slave forced to work in a mine on our own planet by those Vrek. I can't even eat this stuff without getting The Runs.'' Tears forming, frustration brewing in the form of a child's tantrum.\n\nVarl puts a hand on Turin's shoulder and motions for him to move closer. Turin scoots over and closes the gap between them while pushing his food away. ``I know, I let you bunk with me so you would stop crying in your sleep, so I smell you plenty. You still need to eat, as terrible as it may be you need to get something in your system.'' Varl says in a gentle tone you would expect to hear from a father speaking to their child. Many of the rejuves that were forced to labor in the mine saw him in that light as well as a few others.\n\nTurin tries to eat what he can of the slop, but the flavor or lack thereof cause him to not have much of an appetite despite the laborious work from that morning. He sits in silence for few minutes as he tries to eat before turning his attention back to Varl.\n\n``Its been a year since the Vrek took over the planet, why hasn't the High King come to help us?'' Turin asks trying to understand why they had been abandoned to their fate. ``Moorah isn't that far for them to have sent help.''\n\nThe spoon stops just short of Varl's mouth at the question and he takes a moment to think. ``I'm not sure, Turin. It could be the Sector Defense Forces have been trying to retake the planet, but it's been harder than expected. It could also be that the Vrek managed to attack and occupy more than just Vermonty, but I find that unlikely. The Vrek aren't that organized.'' \n\n``So... what are we supposed to do?'' Turin mumbles unsure if he wants the answer with his legs pulled up to his chest.\n\nVarl exhales through his nose ``The only thing we can do is endure and trust that the High King will send his forces to help us. I don't know when that will happen, but I know help will come.''\n\n``How can you be so sure?'' Turin asks with some skepticism in his voice.\n\n``Because if there is one thing a politician can't do if he wants to remain politically powerful, is to maintain an appearance of strength. If the High King can fail to protect a planet inhabited by a bunch of farmers, how can he be trusted to protect the more populous and important worlds?''\n\n``But what if he really can't? What if the High King really can't help us?'' Turin says, sounding almost accusatory at the idea that the High King, the leader of the High Kingdom of Moorah and the protector of Or'chin space would just abandon them.\n\nVarl thinks for a moment before he answers taking a couple more bites of his food ``Then he may turn to the empire for help.'' He says calmly as the only logical answer he can come up with.\n\n``Why would the human's help us? What would they have to gain from helping an Or'chin farming colony and if they cared why haven't they come already?'' confusion and childish petulance crossing Turin's face.\n\n``First off, the humans of the empire prefer to be called Osieanan's after the world that became the capital of their empire. Second, the High Kingdom of Moorah is a subject civilization of the Osieanan Empire and thus has an obligation to defend every world under their banner, including all of those in Or'chin space.'' Varl lectures as if speaking to a student.\n\n``Then why haven't they come?'' Turin's brow knitted with a hard look at Varl. ``If they have an `obligation' like you say, why haven't they come?''\n\nVarl ignores the look he is getting from Turin as he takes another bite of his food. ``Because the Emperor is likely waiting for an invitation.''\n\nTurin's now gives Varl a confused expression tilting his head to the side ``'Invitation? Invitation to what a tea party? An entire planet, that is under their protection by your own admission is enslaved and they are waiting for an invitation?'' \n\nTurin now sounding thoroughly irritated by this point says as his stands up and stomps his foot now just short of a tantrum at the idea that the empire would let people suffer after Varl's explanation about their obligation to those under their banner.\n\nBefore Turin can react Varl grabs Turin and pulls him tight into his lap and grabs his maw to keep it closed. ``Quiet boy, Vrek patrol up above on the walkway.'' He whispers into Turin's ear while keeping an eye on the guards before releasing the boy's mouth. He keeps him held close as he uses his free hand to pick up his bread role, probably the most decent thing in their whole meal and gives it to Turin to eat and keep him quiet while the guards pass and so he can explain.\n\n``The reason the empire doesn't get involved right away is because they wait and see if the governments under control can solve their own problems. They only get involved if they are explicitly asked for aid, or the problem has an immediate risk of spreading to other worlds.'' \n\nTurin can't help but look at the bread roll and just think, his ears folded back and brow furrowed. Think about how there is no good answer to the whole situation at this point. He takes a bite of the roll and doesn't say anything for a bit. When he does speak it starts with an apology.\n\n``Sorry for the tantrum, Varl. I shouldn't have yelled at you. This body makes things more complicated, and my emotions run higher than they would if I was an adult. I just feel so helpless.'' Turin says as he tries to explain.\n\n``Nothing to be sorry about. It's a bad situation and I can't really do anything that will make things better. What I can say is that I know there is a light at the end. We just need to keep moving forward until we get there. Can you do that for me?'' Varl says in a soft voice hoping to calm any remaining emotional turmoil going on inside the boy. \n\nThe pair sit in silence before Varl speaks ``How does a story tonight sound before bed? Pretty sure I can come up with one from the stories I remember from when I was a kid.''\n\n``I'm not a real kid, Varl you don't need to tell me a bedtime story.'' Turin says with a pouty lip.\n\nVarl chuckles ``You're going to listen anyways.''\n\nTurin cracks a smile knowing he's right.\n\n",
