Vlad lay facing away from him, wearing nothing but a pair of worn and frayed briefs that were slightly too small for him, his arms and body were curled protectively around something. Milo sat on the edge of the bed and reached out his paw back towards Vlad then drew it back. Anubis knew he had learned a thing or two about being sad, and if Vlad was like him, the last thing he probably wanted was to be touched. Vlad didn’t respond, his back gently rose and fell with his shallow breathing beneath Milo’s paw.\n\n“What?” Vlad finally answered morosely.\n\nMilo pulled a ceramic dish and a thermos out of his backpack, “[i]Āyat Set[/i] made you some of the wolf apple [i]maraq[/i] you liked, she said it’ll make you feel better, she put a bunch of herbs from her garden in it. Oh, and some mint tea,” Milo pulled a paper sack out of his backpack, “And I made you some [i]ghoriba[/i] in case that was too much for you.”\n\nVlad’s shallow breathing hitched and Milo looked on helplessly as his boyfriend curled up into an even tighter ball and sobbed quietly. After nearly five minutes of Milo rubbing at Vlad’s back the maned wolf’s quiet crying turned into unsteady, creaky laughter.\n\n“You made me food?” Vlad croaked and shook with laughter.\n\n“Yeah,” Milo said uncertainly, “Legs said you weren’t eating.”\n\n“Are the [i]arribas[/i] or whatever the ones with pistachios?” Vlad asked, his voice sounding a little more normal now.\n\n“Yeah of course, only side-striped jackals make them with almonds and those are gross,” Milo pulled his grandmother’s portable tea set from his backpack and quickly set it up on Vlad’s nightstand.\n\n“I guess I could eat a couple of those,” Vlad said reluctantly.\n\n“You can’t eat them without tea,” Milo said as he poured two small cups of the fragrant, dark green tea, “it’s against the law.”\n\n“If I sit up and drink your tea, then you have to promise to take what you’re about to see to your grave, dude” Vlad said seriously.\n\n“Ok,” Milo said uncertainly and adjusted his glasses, “I promise.”\n\nVlad slowly uncurled out of his fetal position, Milo saw he had been curled around a stuffed, and very ragged looking, zoomorphic maned wolf with ridiculously long noodly legs, button eyes, and wearing a bowler hat. One of the eyes was loose and a paw was halfway torn off, while stuffing was leaking out of a series of tiny bite marks along his flank.\n\nThe scene made Milo’s heart ache, Vlad looked like a malnourished, ten year old refugee clutching his stuffed animal.\n\n“Yeah, I know it’s some gay baby shit, shut up,” Vlad said gruffly and wiped at his nose. Milo used one of the napkins he’d brought to wipe the maned wolf’s nose, then leaned forward and gently kissed his snout. \n\nVlad looked confused and blushed to the tips of his ears, “His name’s Mr. Leggles and if you ever tell anyone about him I gotta kill you. Even Legs thinks I got rid of him.”\n\n“I think it’s sweet,” Milo said and handed Vlad a cup of tea with a cookie covering the mouth of it, “give it a minute so it gets all soft and minty.”\n\n“I think [i]you’re[/i] sweet, ya dork,” Vlad sniffed again and winced.\n\nMilo dug through his backpack again and handed him two white pills, “Sometimes when I cry a lot I get a pretty bad headache, it’s just aspirin.”\n\n“You really came prepared,” tears overspilled Vlad’s green eyes, “this is [i]such[/i] bullshit.”\n\n“Don’t worry about it,” Milo scooted next to Vlad and sipped at his tea. Vlad took a small bite of his cookie before he scarfed down the rest of it then threw back his entire cup of tea. Milo handed Vlad the small glass container full of cookies and Vlad dug into them.\n\n“I guess I was hungrier than I thought,” Vlad burped and accepted the refilled glass of tea from Milo. \n\n“You’re probably dehydrated too,” Milo tentatively rubbed at Vlad’s lower back and was rewarded with him leaning against him.\n\n“Sorry you had to see me like this,” Vlad finished his tea and laid his head in Milo’s lap, “I just get uh, pretty sad every once in awhile. Legs says it’s like, a teenage maned wolf thing and we get extra sad ‘cause of hormones or something.”\n\nMilo stroked at Vlad’s greasy, unkempt mane, “It doesn’t bother me, you can’t help how you feel. You dealt with me when I was being a real Melancholy Milo.”\n\nVlad shrugged, “I just started thinking about my family ‘n shit, and I guess started feeling like everybody is going to like, die or leave me or whatever.”\n\nMilo rubbed his back, “Legs isn’t going to leave you, [i]I’m[/i] not going to leave you.” Milo’s face went hot, that was a Serious Statement considering they had been dating for all of six weeks, even if they [i]had[/i] declared their Undying Love for each other after a long night of Doing It and bowling. Even if we weren’t dating any more?” Milo asked, not that he would break up with Vlad for even the studliest jackal.\n\n“Yeah probably, I dunno,” Vlad said in a broken voice and blindly groped for another cookie until Milo stuck one in his paw.\n\n“And Legs cares about you a lot, he was super worried when he called me,” Milo continued, “He was getting ready to take you to the doctor.”\n\n“Really? He called you?” Vlad asked in disbelief as he slowly crunched into another pistachio shortbread cookie.\n\n“Yep, and it’s not like I’ve been dealing with being anxious and depressed since I was little or anything,” Milo said wryly and handed Vlad a napkin.\n\n“I’m um, feeling a lot better,” Vlad sounded embarrassed, “Still feel like everyone hates me, but not as bad.”\n\n“Good, I don’t think anyone [i]hates[/i] you, in fact,” Milo paused awkwardly, “a lot of people care a lot about you.”\n\n“Thanks, Milo,” Vlad hugged the jackal around his midsection for a long time.\n\n“You think you can handle a shower?” Milo asked, “It’ll make you feel better, and your uh, usual rich musk is a little overpowering right now.”\n\nVlad snorted with laughter, “I guess I kinda got used to the stank.”\n\n“I can clean up your room while you wash up,” Milo said while he raked his claws through Vlad’s tangled, greasy mane.\n\n“Oh,” Vlad said sadly, “You’re not gonna help me get clean?”\n\nMilo blushed, “I could, um, probably do that.”\n--\n\nVlad ran his paws through the soft, clean fur on Milo’s chest as the jackal teenager pulled off his shirt.
