He stood at the edge of the treeline, finding himself atop a cliff overlooking the town. He stared down, his eyes searching over the town, the Kecleon's Market, the Kangaskhan's Storage, Duskull's Bank, everything he had heard about gleamed under the midday sun.\n\nHis eyes continued to scan the town for one particular building which at first he could not see, but as his gaze reached the edge of the town he saw a large rock on the outskirts of the town, no it wasn't a rock it was a huge building! He let out a laugh of joy as he shouted to the skies \"There it is!\", his eyes now locked on the Wigglytuff monument on top of the huge building \"Wigglytuff's Guild...\".\n\nHe sat down, his tail wagging happily, the yellow star shaped tip sparkling in the sun. He had finally made it, Treasure Town where he could join the guild, start a team and become an explorer. Sitting there he let his mind wonder to his future missions, losing himself in his own fantasies of the adventures he would have, but after a while he shook his head to bring himself back to reality. He wasn't an explorer yet, and he wouldn't be today anyway. He had found the town, but he wasn't ready to go down yet. He looked at the town once more, eyeing the path leading out of town. There was a path leading down the cliff side which would take him directly into the town, but not today. He had spent days traveling to get here, yet his heart wasn't quite ready. 'One more night sleeping in the forest and that's it, tomorrow I'll take my first step to become a real explorer' he thought to himself wistfully.\n\nJaze had dreamt of becoming an explorer ever since his mother started telling him stories of the explorers of Treasure Town. She would sit down, waving her long tail to beckon him over to her making him scurry over excitedly and curl against his mother’s side, relishing her soft black and blue fur which he admired. She was a beautiful Luxray and Jaze often imagined himself older and evolved, would he have the same fluffy black and blue fur his mother had?\n\nAs he curled against her warm body, she would tell him many stories, some about the forest they lived in but they never interested him much. While the forest was a nice place to live, peaceful and plentiful, he found it rather boring and the few stories she shared of the forest were uneventful. Or at least they seemed that way compared to the other stories she would tell. These were of the explorers of Treasure Town. His mother had lived her whole life in the forest, but had many stories about the explorers of Treasure Town because Jaze's father, a magnificent and powerful Pyroar was once an explorer of Wigglytuff's Guild.\n\nThey had met when Pyroar had been on a mission to search for a lost Pikachu, who had wondered so far into the forest she had been found by The Luxray who had then watched over her. She had been planning to take the trek herself to help the poor little Pikachu back to Treasure Town but just as she was preparing to make the trip, this stunning Pyroar walked into clearing next to her den. \n\nAs their eyes met.. well simply put they were both speechless, and it would have been clear to anyone they were instantly taken by one another. After the moment of silence they introduced themselves, her name was Surges and his Blaze, and before long they were chatting away, they got along well, maybe too well as they continued into the night laughing and sharing stories. Before they knew it the little Pikachu was fast asleep and the sun had long since disappeared, Blaze would have to wait until morning to take her back home. \n\nBut Surges was more than happy to let this Pyroar share her den that night. They left the Pikachu where she slept making sure she was comfy, the forest was safe and she wasn’t too far from the den. But the two feline pokemon didn’t want to wake her, the den would probably not be the best place to sleep anyway, it would be a bit crowded with the large felines sleeping in there, although sleep didn’t seem to be the first thing on their minds that night anyway...\n\nWith a last look at the Pikachu and then up at the big male Pyroar, Surges turned and slowly padded over towards her den, stepping lightly but purposely swinging her hips side to side as she did so. Blaze stood staring, hypnotized by the swaying hips, his mouth slightly agape. The gorgeous Luxray then stopped at the mouth of her den, and as the hypnotizing swaying stopped Blaze blinked himself back to reality to see Surges standing now with her tail raised high, waving it as if slightly signalling him to follow. He stood there frozen as she turned her head back, meeting his eyes for a moment and blinked at him, tilting her head slightly before swinging it back in an exaggerated manor turning once again to face her den entrance she padded gracefully inside. Blaze still frozen to the spot, shook his head for a moment. Not needing anymore invitation he chased after her, almost tripping over his own paws in the process. Regaining his composure as he came to the den entrance he poked his head inside to see the Luxray stretching in a ray of moonlight shining through a small hole in the roof of the den. He had never seen anything more alluring in his life. Mentally gulping, he breathed in trying to keep his composure, fighting the urge to pounce the unbelievably sexy Luxray like an eager kitten. \n\nThat said, his scent and the now bright red protruding member between his hind legs hardly hid his intent, although the Luxray stealing his gaze was hardly hiding hers either, her scent was intoxicating and he could see her nether regions were already soaking wet even from the other side of the den. None the less he slowly approached the Luxray, acting as cool and collected as he could manage. Trying to keep his voice smooth he whispered “So… I guess we are spending the night here together?”. Mentally wincing at how his smooth line had come out as more of a squeak, oh if his friends at the guild could see him now, the great Pyroar tongue tied over a horny female.\n\nHe stared at the Luxray desperately waiting for her reply. She waited a moment, turning her head to face him as she opened her mouth with a giggle “I suppose we are…”. Blaze then opened his mouth to reply but Surges simply raised a forepaw over her mouth to silence him “As much as I appreciate the sweet talk, we don’t know how long Pikachu will be asleep, so…” she paused to once again stretch in an exaggerated manor, tail raised high making sure her hindquarters gleamed in the ray of moonlight. She continued whispering “Would you be so kind as to put that enormous” as she finished her stretch and turned her head to face him yet again meeting his eyes before dropping her gaze down looking past his forelegs to see the red pointed member, which as if knowing it was being stared at dripped a white drop of liquid from its pointed tip. Hearing her return the Pikachu awoke and seeing the food dug straight in without saying a word. The two felines shared another glance, if the Pikachu had seen their little performance; she clearly didn’t seem to care. They fetched the rest of the berries Surges was unable to carry as the Pikachu ate and all three enjoyed a satisfying breakfast.\n\nBasking in the morning sunlight, they continued to chat but this time of the future. They both knew their night together was more than a simple one time encounter, although it had been a single day they both now felt a strong bond. Pyroar had already decided he would retire from being an explorer. He would bring the Pikachu home, tell the guild and return to live a life in the forest with his new mate Surges. But soon word got around why he was leaving and everyone joked about how the almighty Pyroar had finally been bested and tamed by a female Luxray.\n\nHe spent the rest of the night with the guild as they feasted and celebrated his new life, all of them congratulated him personally and told him how they would miss him and of course made sure he promised to come back to visit. \n\nThe next morning he walked out of the guild for the final time, turning back to look at the guild he had always thought he would spent the rest of his days at, he was surprised he felt no regrets about leaving. He only had hope, for his peaceful future with his new loving mate Surges. They needed Blaze’s strength.\n\nThe new family was shocked at the news and after some discussion; they decided he had to go. He had chosen a new life, but the guild was his family too and he could not ignore their plea for help. So with a hasty goodbye he ran off at high speed with the Rapidash, as Surges held Jaze close to her with her forepaw watching her mate disappear into the trees.\n\nShe waited anxiously for several days. Jaze simply watched his mother as she paced around restlessly, not understanding where his father went or why he had not come home. It took four days to travel to Treasure Town so at the earliest he would be back in nine or ten days. And they were the most painstaking days of Surges life, every day she sat and stared at the trees wanting him to appear, but he did not. After twelve days she could wait no longer, Jaze was fast asleep and she hated waking him but she had no choice, she had to know what had happened.\n\nBut just as she was about to wake him and explain where she was going to take him, she saw a flame through the trees, thinking it was Blaze’s fire her heart soared. Finally he had come home. But no it was Flare, he limped into the clearing and collapsed on the floor. Looking over him quickly she could see he had a lot of injuries that looked like they were quickly treated. But as her brain caught up to her, her heart sank, if he was this badly injured and came alone..\n\n“Where’s Blaze?” she tried to shout, but it only came out as whisper.\n\nThe Rapidash just stared at her, he opened his mouth and closed it again looking away letting out a cough. He then let out a breath and turned back to face Surges “I’m sor..”. The words were barely out of his mouth before Surges screamed “Noooo!, he can’t be, please tell me my Blaze is safe!”\n\nFlare kept his gaze steady, fighting the urge to turn and hide he steadied his voice “I can’t, Blaze.. Blaze is dead.”. Surges was about to roar to the heaven in grief, but the Rapidash stopped her “Wait” eyeing the sleeping Shinx “not here, come let’s talk in the forest..”. Taking a deep breath Surges calmed herself as much as she could, her whole body trembled, but she could not let Jaze know. Not yet, she may have lost her mate but still had him and he was too young to understand any of this., so she slowly followed the limping Rapidash into the trees. Flare explained everything that happened in hushed whispers, and surges just sat silently and listened.\n\nAfter he finished his story, surges looked at him blankly and responded “Thank you for coming and telling me” pausing to take a breath she continued “You suffered too, you should stay here until you are healed, just don’t say anything to Jaze, if he asks… Blaze just isn’t ready to come home yet.. I need to be the one to tell him the truth”. The Rapidash stared at the Luxray, astonished by her calmness. She was clearly heartbroken, she must be fighting the urge to scream to the heavens and run to Treasure Town to see for herself, yet she was holding herself together for her son. He immediately respected the Luxray and he could see why Blaze loved her so much as to quit the Guild. Blinking at her he whispered through a cough “Thank you, I would appreciate that”.\n\nDays passed, and soon Flare left. He had nagged her asking if she was really ok but Surges insisted she was fine, and so reluctantly Flare left to return to the guild.\n\nSurges did her best to care for her son alone. Thankfully the forest was plentiful in berries and was a safe place to live so she had little trouble keeping them both fed. But it wasn’t hunger that left an empty feeling inside her. She realized she would carry this hole in her heart for the rest of her life, but she promised herself she would never allow it to affect her love for her son, she would raise him with enough love for both her and Blaze.\n\nSo Surges continued to live for her son, they lived peacefully for several years together in the forest. As Jaze grew older she told him many stories, mostly of his father and the tales he once shared of his explorations with the Guild. Eventually after Jaze asked for what seemed like the hundredth time, she gave in and told him about his father’s fate. Jaze took it fairly well, he was smart and a quick learner and had long suspected he was dead, knowing his mother probably hadn’t the heart to tell him the truth. Although she told him of his father’s fate, she never told him the details simply telling him he died protecting his Guild and that he was a hero. \n\nJaze never nagged her about it again, pushing down his questions often wondered about what really happened. Who could have killed the mightly Pyroar? What happened? All she told him was that there was an attack on the Guild and he had saved them all. \n\nDespite knowing his terrible fate as a member of the Guild, Jaze still loved to hear stories about the might Wigglytuff’s Guild. Jaze had always secretly wanted to become an explorer and even now he knew his fate, his desire to follow in his father’s pawsteps simply grew; he wanted to be hero like him. But he never spoke of this dream to his mother. He thought she would be afraid he would die and leave her behind too. So he continued to live with his mother. It was a peaceful life, and he loved his mother but he still continued to dream of being an explorer.\n\nAnother year passed and his mother had become weak, she spent most of the time in her den where Jaze would bring her food, most of which she just sniffed or nibbled. Jaze was scared and worried but deep down he knew his mother was dying. He spent most of his time at her side, afraid without his warmth she would slip away from him.\n\nOne day he was curled next to her once again daydreaming about being an explorer when his mother spoke to him in a stuttering whisper “Jaze…” he say up and looked at her “What is it mother? Are you thirsty?. “No Jaze, I am fine…” she replied, pausing before continuing “You are a smart boy Jaze, you know what’s happening to me don’t you?” Jaze opened his mouth to reply but she raised a paw feebly to silence him, she knew his answer already. “Yes Jaze I am dying. I have had a good life, I have had love but also heartbreak. Losing your father was the most painful thing I have ever experienced, but he didn’t leave me alone. No he left you, you are the most precious thing in my life and you have made my life a good one Jaze, I love you and I always will” she stopped as she began to cough.\n\n“Mother… I know..I know I love you too.. It’s ok, it will be ok..” Jaze tried to find the words to reply to his mother but he just trailed off finding tears rolling down his muzzle. Surges raised her paw feebly again and wiped the tears from his face “Jaze, it’s ok. You know I am not blind. You really think I can’t tell what you dream about? I see how eagerly you listen to my stories of your father’s old adventures and I see how you often sit just staring out into the trees. I know you dream of being an explorer”.\n\n“Mother I..” Jaze stuttered but Surges just continued as if he didn’t speak “You think I don’t want you to be one. Well it would be a lie if I said I wasn’t worried, I know better than anyone the dangers of being an explorer, but I also know the joy it brought Blaze. So Jaze, I want you to follow your heart. There will be nothing left to hold you here. Just promise me, you will always be careful and never do anything too reckless”.\n\nJaze stared at his mother speechless. He had always thought she would hate him for wanting to be an explorer. He saw his mother’s breath had gotten very heavy; she stared into his eyes with love waiting his reply. Tears flowing uncontrollably he stuttered “I promise mother, I’ll be a great explorer just like father was! But I’ll never be stupid, or reckless. I … I love you, I’ll make you proud!”.\n\nSurges smiled and let out a feeble purr “Thank you, I know you’ll be a great explorer and you have already made my proud” breaking off for another cough before speaking once more “I never did tell you how your father died, and I can’t now but you should ask a Rapidash called Flare, he knew your father well to his very last moments.. I love you son. I’ll watch over you always as you become an explorer others will look up to. I love you soo mu..ch”. The last word came out as a barely audible whisper as Surges let out her final breath.\n\n“Mother… Mother! Please no not yet! Jaze mumbled through streams of tears as he pawed at her with trembling paws. But her body was already feeling colder, he knew the truth… she was dead. Jaze spent the rest of the night curled against his mother’s side, as if keeping vigil over her body. His mother was the only one he had had for most of his life, he was now alone.\n\nAs the sun came up the next morning, he woke up realising he must have dozed off. He turned to see his mother exactly as he had left her, except her body was now stone cold. He stood up purposely, shaking his head knowing what he had to do. He knew his grief could not vanish over night, but dwelling and feeling sorry for himself would get him nowhere. His mother had been strong enough to take care of him after his father died and so now he had to do the same and follow his dream like his mother told him to. He would travel to Treasure Town and become an explorer. But first he needed to bury his mother.\n\nHe spent hours digging a grave big enough for her, but he finally did it. Next he had to drag her into the hole, which he expected to be a tough task but he was surprised to find her body much lighter than expected. Knowing she had not been eating because of her illness it made sense, but brought a new wave of grief to him knowing his mother was reduced to such a state. Eventually he managed to drag her into the grave and bury her. He stood over the grave for what must have been an hour, wanting to say something, but unable to find words that could sum up all his feelings and thoughts. So he made a declaration.\n\n“You were the best mother I could have asked for, and I swear I will become an explorer that will make you and father proud.”\n\nAnd with that he turned toward Treasure Town, he didn’t look back he set off on his new life, just like his father had done many years ago.\n\n","writing_bbcode_parsed":"Chapter One: The Making of Jaze

"Ahh finally! There it is… I can see it… Treasure Town!"  Jaze exclaimed as he finally broke through the tree cover of the forest into open sky. He stood at the edge of the treeline, finding himself atop a cliff overlooking the town. He stared down, his eyes searching over the town, the Kecleon's Market, the Kangaskhan's Storage, Duskull's Bank, everything he had heard about gleamed under the midday sun.

His eyes continued to scan the town for one particular building which at first he could not see, but as his gaze reached the edge of the town he saw a large rock on the outskirts of the town, no it wasn't a rock it was a huge building! He let out a laugh of joy as he shouted to the skies "There it is!", his eyes now locked on the Wigglytuff monument on top of the huge building "Wigglytuff's Guild...".

He sat down, his tail wagging happily, the yellow star shaped tip sparkling in the sun. He had finally made it, Treasure Town where he could join the guild, start a team and become an explorer. Sitting there he let his mind wonder to his future missions, losing himself in his own fantasies of the adventures he would have, but after a while he shook his head to bring himself back to reality. He wasn't an explorer yet, and he wouldn't be today anyway. He had found the town, but he wasn't ready to go down yet. He looked at the town once more, eyeing the path leading out of town. There was a path leading down the cliff side which would take him directly into the town,  but not today. He had spent days traveling to get here, yet his heart wasn't quite ready. 'One more night sleeping in the forest and that's it, tomorrow I'll take my first step to become a real explorer' he thought to himself wistfully.

Jaze had dreamt of becoming an explorer ever since his mother started telling him stories of the explorers of Treasure Town. She would sit down, waving her long tail to beckon him over to her making him scurry over excitedly and curl against his mother’s side, relishing her soft black and blue fur which he admired. She was a beautiful Luxray and Jaze often imagined himself older and evolved, would he have the same fluffy black and blue fur his mother had?

As he curled against her warm body, she would tell him many stories, some about the forest they lived in but they never interested him much. While the forest was a nice place to live, peaceful and plentiful, he found it rather boring and the few stories she shared of the forest were uneventful. Or at least they seemed that way compared to the other stories she would tell. These were of the explorers of Treasure Town. His mother had lived her whole life in the forest, but had many stories about the explorers of Treasure Town because Jaze's father, a magnificent and powerful Pyroar was once an explorer of Wigglytuff's Guild.

They had met when Pyroar had been on a mission to search for a lost Pikachu, who had wondered so far into the forest she had been found by The Luxray who had then watched over her. She had been planning to take the trek herself to help the poor little Pikachu back to Treasure Town but just as she was preparing to make the trip, this stunning Pyroar walked into clearing next to her den.

As their eyes met.. well simply put they were both speechless, and it would have been clear to anyone they were instantly taken by one another. After the moment of silence they introduced themselves, her name was Surges and his Blaze, and before long they were chatting away, they got along well, maybe too well as they continued into the night laughing and sharing stories. Before they knew it the little Pikachu was fast asleep and the sun had long since disappeared, Blaze would have to wait until morning to take her back home.

But Surges was more than happy to let this Pyroar share her den that night. They left the Pikachu where she slept making sure she was comfy, the forest was safe and she wasn’t too far from the den. But the two feline pokemon didn’t want to wake her, the den would probably not be the best place to sleep anyway, it would be a bit crowded with the large felines sleeping in there, although sleep didn’t seem to be the first thing on their minds that night anyway...

With a last look at the Pikachu and then up at the big male Pyroar, Surges turned and slowly padded over towards her den, stepping lightly but purposely swinging  her hips side to side as she did so. Blaze stood staring, hypnotized by the swaying hips, his mouth slightly agape. The gorgeous Luxray then stopped at the mouth of her den, and as the hypnotizing swaying stopped Blaze blinked himself back to reality to see Surges standing now with her tail raised high, waving it as if slightly signalling him to follow. He stood there frozen as she turned her head back, meeting his eyes for a moment and blinked at him, tilting her head slightly before swinging it back in an exaggerated manor turning once again to face her den entrance she padded gracefully inside. Blaze still frozen to the spot, shook his head for a moment. Not needing anymore invitation he chased after her, almost tripping over his own paws in the process. Regaining his composure as he came to the den entrance he poked his head inside to see the Luxray stretching in a ray of moonlight shining through a small hole in the roof of the den. He had never seen anything more alluring in his life. Mentally gulping, he breathed in trying to keep his composure, fighting the urge to pounce the unbelievably sexy Luxray like an eager kitten.

But she need not have worried, Blaze even explained he was the same, he had only chosen to mate with Pokemon who could not have eggs from him, and they both agreed their previous experiences seemed rather pathetic compared to the intense mating they had the previous night. He told her how he had always thought that was enough, he had thought he would live his life as an explorer never settling down with a family, but meeting her had changed him, she made him discover a longing he never knew he had, he wanted to start a family with her.

As the sun rose, it was soon midday and it was time for Blaze and Pikachu to be on their way. Pyroar and Pikachu stood ready to begin the long trek back to Treasure Town as Surges couldn’t resist running up to her new mate nuzzling him lovingly, accidently giving him a little shock.

Blaze grinned “Easy their Surges” he purred “I promise I will return as soon as I can”.

“I know” she replied as she smiled “I’ll be waiting”.

And with that he set off to take Pikachu back home. It took a few days to get there, but they did so without incident. He made sure Pikachu was safely reunited with her parents, who were both so thankful, he didn’t think he would escape their constant thanks and offers of rewards he had no interest in. As he finally found the chance to leave, he looked down to see the Pikachu pulling the fur of his foreleg. He bent down wondering what the Pikachu wanted, to which she grabbed his ear and whispered to him “Thank you for bringing me home….. and don’t worry I won’t tell anyone about what you did with Surges”.  Blaze’s eyes opened wide and he blushed, nuzzling the little Pikachu he whispered back a thank you and ran off before her parents started asking questions.

He then went to the guild, where he told them he was leaving. They were all shocked to hear at first, he was a sort of legend in the guild and everyone admired him, no one expected him to quit, let alone with a one star rescue mission being his last exploration. But soon word got around why he was leaving and everyone joked about how the almighty Pyroar had finally been bested and tamed by a female Luxray.

He spent the rest of the night with the guild as they feasted and celebrated his new life, all of them congratulated him personally and told him how they would miss him and of course made sure he promised to come back to visit.

The next morning he walked out of the guild for the final time, turning back to look at the guild he had always thought he would spent the rest of his days at, he was surprised he felt no regrets about leaving. He only had hope, for his peaceful future with his new loving mate Surges. He turned and walked out of town, not looking back again only forward to his new life.

Surges welcomed him back excitedly when he finally returned, and he returned her nuzzles and licks lovingly, which quickly grew more intense and before long they were embraced in another intense mating session. Over the next few days they mated many more times, each feeling more intense than the last. And so they began their life together, shortly after Surges found herself pregnant with an egg, much to the joy of the two felines, although neither were surprised after the intense mating sessions they had been having. Before long Luxray gave birth to an egg, which in turn hatched into an adorable Shinx.

They were a bit indecisive on the name, Blaze wanted to call him Jolt while Surges wanted to name him after his father and call him Blaze. He told her it was sweet but would be too confusing, to which she conceded. So they compromised and named the little Shinx Jaze.

The three lived together happily, and life seemed perfect. But only weeks later Blaze’s good guild friend Flare, a high ranking Rapidash suddenly appeared. Unfortunately he was not merely there to visit the new family. The Guild was in trouble, and was under attack by evil Pokemon.  They needed all the help they could get, despite Rapidash being one of their strongest members they had spared him as he was the fastest in the guild. They needed Blaze’s strength.

The new family was shocked at the news and after some discussion; they decided he had to go. He had chosen a new life, but the guild was his family too and he could not ignore their plea for help. So with a hasty goodbye he ran off at high speed with the Rapidash, as Surges held Jaze close to her with her forepaw watching her mate disappear into the trees.

She waited anxiously for several days. Jaze simply watched his mother as she paced around restlessly, not understanding where his father went or why he had not come home. It took four days to travel to Treasure Town so at the earliest he would be back in nine or ten days. And they were the most painstaking days of Surges life, every day she sat and stared at the trees wanting him to appear, but he did not. After twelve days she could wait no longer, Jaze was fast asleep and she hated waking him but she had no choice, she had to know what had happened.

But just as she was about to wake him and explain where she was going to take him, she saw a flame through the trees, thinking it was Blaze’s fire her heart soared. Finally he had come home. But no it was Flare, he limped into the clearing and collapsed on the floor. Looking over him quickly she could see he had a lot of injuries that looked like they were quickly treated. But as her brain caught up to her, her heart sank, if he was this badly injured and came alone..

“Where’s Blaze?” she tried to shout, but it only came out as whisper.

The Rapidash just stared at her, he opened his mouth and closed it again looking away letting out a cough. He then let out a breath and turned back to face Surges “I’m sor..”. The words were barely out of his mouth before Surges screamed “Noooo!, he can’t be, please tell me my Blaze is safe!”

Flare kept his gaze steady, fighting the urge to turn and hide he steadied his voice “I can’t, Blaze.. Blaze is dead.”. Surges was about to roar to the heaven in grief, but the Rapidash stopped her “Wait” eyeing the sleeping Shinx “not here, come let’s talk in the forest..”. Taking a deep breath Surges calmed herself as much as she could, her whole body trembled, but she could not let Jaze know. Not yet, she may have lost her mate but still had him and he was too young to understand any of this., so she slowly followed the limping Rapidash into the trees. Flare explained everything that happened in hushed whispers, and surges just sat silently and listened.

After he finished his story, surges looked at him blankly and responded “Thank you for coming and telling me” pausing to take a breath she continued “You suffered too, you should stay here until you are healed, just don’t say anything to Jaze, if he asks… Blaze just isn’t ready to come home yet.. I need to be the one to tell him the truth”. The Rapidash stared at the Luxray, astonished by her calmness. She was clearly heartbroken, she must be fighting the urge to scream to the heavens and run to Treasure Town to see for herself, yet she was holding herself together for her son. He immediately respected the Luxray and he could see why Blaze loved her so much as to quit the Guild. Blinking at her he whispered through a cough “Thank you, I would appreciate that”.

Days passed, and soon Flare left. He had nagged her asking if she was really ok but Surges insisted she was fine, and so reluctantly Flare left to return to the guild.

Surges did her best to care for her son alone. Thankfully the forest was plentiful in berries and was  a safe place to live so she had little trouble keeping them both fed. But it wasn’t hunger that left an empty feeling inside her. She realized she would carry this hole in her heart for the rest of her life, but she promised herself she would never allow it to affect her love for her son, she would raise him with enough love for both her and Blaze.

So Surges continued to live for her son, they lived peacefully for several years together in the forest. As Jaze grew older she told him many stories, mostly of his father and the tales he once shared of his explorations with the Guild. Eventually after Jaze asked for what seemed like the hundredth time, she gave in and told him about his father’s fate. Jaze took it fairly well, he was smart and a quick learner and had long suspected he was dead, knowing his mother probably hadn’t the heart to tell him the truth. Although she told him of his father’s fate, she never told him the details simply telling him he died protecting his Guild and that he was a hero.

Jaze never nagged her about it again, pushing down his questions often wondered about what really happened. Who could have killed the mightly Pyroar? What happened? All she told him was that there was an attack on the Guild and he had saved them all.

Despite knowing his terrible fate as a member of the Guild, Jaze still loved to hear stories about the might Wigglytuff’s Guild. Jaze had always secretly wanted to become an explorer and even now he knew his fate, his desire to follow in his father’s pawsteps simply grew; he wanted to be hero like him. But he never spoke of this dream to his mother. He thought she would be afraid he would die and leave her behind too. So he continued to live with his mother. It was a peaceful life, and he loved his mother but he still continued to dream of being an explorer.

Another year passed and his mother had become weak, she spent most of the time in her den where Jaze would bring her food, most of which she just sniffed or nibbled. Jaze was scared and worried but deep down he knew his mother was dying. He spent most of his time at her side, afraid without his warmth she would slip away from him.

One day he was curled next to her once again daydreaming about being an explorer when his mother spoke to him in a stuttering whisper “Jaze…” he say up and looked at her “What is it mother? Are you thirsty?. “No Jaze, I am fine…” she replied, pausing before continuing  “You are a smart boy Jaze, you know what’s happening to me don’t you?” Jaze opened his mouth to reply but she raised a paw feebly to silence him, she knew his answer already. “Yes Jaze I am dying. I have had a good life, I have had love but also heartbreak. Losing your father was the most painful thing I have ever experienced, but he didn’t leave me alone. No he left you, you are the most precious thing in my life and you have made my life a good one Jaze, I love you and I always will” she stopped as she began to cough.

“Mother… I know..I know I love you too.. It’s ok, it will be ok..” Jaze tried to find the words to reply to his mother but he just trailed off finding tears rolling down his muzzle. Surges raised her paw feebly again and wiped the tears from his face “Jaze, it’s ok. You know I am not blind. You really think I can’t tell what you dream about? I see how eagerly you listen to my stories of your father’s old adventures and I see how you often sit just staring out into the trees. I know you dream of being an explorer”.

“Mother I..” Jaze stuttered but Surges just continued as if he didn’t speak “You think I don’t want you to be one. Well it would be a lie if I said I wasn’t worried, I know better than anyone the dangers  of being an explorer, but I also know the joy it brought Blaze. So Jaze, I want you to follow your heart. There will be nothing left to hold you here. Just promise me, you will always be careful and never do anything too reckless”.

Jaze stared at his mother speechless. He had always thought she would hate him for wanting to be an explorer. He saw his mother’s breath had gotten very heavy; she stared into his eyes with love waiting his reply. Tears flowing uncontrollably he stuttered “I promise mother, I’ll be a great explorer just like father was! But I’ll never be stupid, or reckless. I … I love you, I’ll make you proud!”.

Surges smiled and let out a feeble purr “Thank you, I know you’ll be a great explorer and you have already made my proud” breaking off for another cough before speaking once more “I never did tell you how your father died, and I can’t now but you should ask a Rapidash called Flare, he knew your father well to his very last moments.. I love you son. I’ll watch over you always as you become an explorer others will look up to. I love you soo mu..ch”. The last word came out as a barely audible whisper as Surges let out her final breath.

“Mother… Mother! Please no not yet! Jaze mumbled through streams of tears as he pawed at her with trembling paws. But her body was already feeling colder, he knew the truth… she was dead. Jaze spent the rest of the night curled against his mother’s side, as if keeping vigil over her body. His mother was the only one he had had for most of his life, he was now alone.

As the sun came up the next morning, he woke up realising he must have dozed off. He turned to see his mother exactly as he had left her, except her body was now stone cold. He stood up purposely, shaking his head knowing what he had to do. He knew his grief could not vanish over night, but dwelling and feeling sorry for himself would get him nowhere. His mother had been strong enough to take care of him after his father died and so now he had to do the same and follow his dream like his mother told him to. He would travel to Treasure Town and become an explorer. But first he needed to bury his mother.

He spent hours digging a grave big enough for her, but he finally did it. Next he had to drag her into the hole, which he expected to be a tough task but he was surprised to find her body much lighter than expected. Knowing she had not been eating because of her illness it made sense, but brought a new wave of grief to him knowing his mother was reduced to such a state. Eventually he managed to drag her into the grave and bury her. He stood over the grave for what must have been an hour, wanting to say something, but unable to find words that could sum up all his feelings and thoughts. So he made a declaration.

“You were the best mother I could have asked for, and I swear I will become an explorer that will make you and father proud.”

And with that he turned toward Treasure Town, he didn’t look back he set off on his new life, just like his father had done many years ago.
