Word Count: 1,347", "writing": "He’d been hearing about the mysterious lake all summer long. The weird water said to look unnatural, and no one who touched it ever came back. The urban legends always revolved around what it looked like, but never where it was. It took most of his summer break, but he finally managed to track it down based on the clues he could find.\n\nIt wasn’t obscenely far from where he lived. Just half an hour on a dusty old tram in the early morning got him there. Old factory land, nestled in the hills upstream of a creek that once fed into the nearby river. They’d damed it off years ago, and no one had been willing to touch the place since. The building itself was far away from the perimeter gates, cold and looming in a valley half-surrounded by massive mounds of dirt and grass, but that didn’t matter. Not to him. Only the one place in the entire area that had been blurred from satellite images and map apps, and covered up in aways not normal for such a small city.\n\nHe managed to get to the south fence easily enough. Not even really a sign telling trespassers to keep away, or marking private property. Long-rusted sheets of metal laid on the ground, but their faces had been bare for years by the time he found them. The fence was no different, and despite bringing his gloves to climb it, there was a hole big enough to walk through, parted by overgrowth and fresh trees.\n\nOnly a few minutes of slow walking through the dense bush led him to his prize: a lake beaming with azure water, looking like something out of an old animated show he’d once seen. The banks around it were just as unnatural as they’d all said, brighter than anything else in the area and absolutely pristine in comparison to the outside world. What made it more intriguing was that it didn’t even look organic. The grass seemed puffy, the ground bloated, and the rocks shined like vinyl or rubber in the breaking dawn.\n\nIt was his time to find out the truth. He sat down his backpack and took off his gloves, tail twitching with excitement behind him. Then, he approached the water, finding his footsteps created squeaks and creaks under them. It was like walking in an inflatable bouncy castle, but with just a little better footing.\n\nHe pressed his hand into the surface, pulling back…water. The cleanest, clearest water he’d ever seen, but just water. Part of his brain was disappointed at the lack of a payoff to his hunt, but he also hadn’t really thought about what he expected from it all. The thrill of exploration was what drew him in, after all.\n\nHe sat down at the rocky edge, pulling off his shoes and slipping his feet into the cool liquid for a bit. The walk had taken a little out of him, and the view was incredible as the sun rose up over the horizon and into view. A prize in and of itself, even if it wasn’t what he’d wanted before.\n\nAfter a bit of a rest, he pulled himself back up, but what he found wasn’t the usual paws. He hadn’t even noticed the rubbery sheen creeping up his legs. Fur had disappeared, replacing his spots with a basic painted vinyl on boot-like feet. Despite his brain freaking out at the sight, he remained calm, and prodded at the changed limbs.\n\nAir-filled. Squeaky. Squishy.\n\nHe knew he’d never been normal in any sense of the word. Where most would have ran for their lives screaming, he did something different.
