And, unfortunately, the movie focuses too much on nick and judy, leaving the rest of an amazin g cast of characters on the foreground. Yes, the moive is short, and the story is basically a race against time, but....yeah. That great story came with a price.\n\nMany people think the shock collars plot was a better idea...it wasn't, i'll never think otherwise, that plot was dark, mean spirited and honestly, after the disasters that THE GOOD DINOSAUR and INSIDE OUT were...in terms of popularity. Disney didn't want another “sad equals mature” movie (and yes, disney and pixar are the same thing, no matter how they try to make you think otherwise). I have readed some extracts of that script that have leaked to the internet (i am not entirely sure they are real, therefore, i wont post links or anything similar. But....considering the huge rewrite the movie went through....it's very possible most of those things were on that script) basically, it was a very darker story moodwise. Nick and benjamin were buddies. Benjamin dies saving nick from gazelle's tigers, gazelle and koslov were on a turf war for the control of tundratown's underworld. Gazelle ends up eaten by her pet tigers, kinda like scar on the lion king. Yes, it had very dramatic and good moments (the shock collar party) and we lost an amazing character (honey badger.) but...were we really ready to see a story full of racism, prejudice, character deaths and mafia wars? No, we were not. But....that script had more character development of the secondary cast, since it had way less characters. so....it's a matter of balance.\n\nZootopia has a perfect, basic, and deep story. That, nobody can argue. It's “bland” and lacks of “maturity and dark tone”? Yes...AND THANK GOD IT DOES. It still gives its message perfectly. And most important, WE CARE ABOUT THE CHARACTERS, yes, we must care about characters on fiction stories, if we don't, what's the point? Why watch a movie when we don't care about the characters? IT'S OKAY TO CARE, LIKE AND LOVE FICTIONAL CHARACTERS, with moderation, of course. Maybe we keep getting crap like LEOMON DIES, KUMATETSU DIES, IGNEEL DIES, GOOD LIKEABLE CHARACTERS BECOME EVIL OUT OF NOWHERE and so many others because writers realized we stopped caring about characters, and we care more about “shock value” “maturity” or “being edgy and witty” than we care about a good story, with good characters.\nBut yeah....zootopia presents a lot of amazing characters to us....and then, nothing more. They become, decoration. Because....it's nick and judy's story. Oh yes, there are books, comics and similar that expand the universe of characters, there are even guides to the characters. But....that's not enough. A ZOOTOPIA SEQUEL HAS BEEN CONFIRMED AND IT'S ON THE WORKS. Hopefully, we will have the chance to know more about finnick, clawhauser, bogo, gazelle and the others. Of course, judy and nick will always be the center of the story, and that's ok, but, we already explored their origin stories, so, we can focus that screen time on the rest of the cast, specially, if new characters will be introduced, which is an almost sure thing.\n\n\nWell, there is it. The one thing i don't like about zootopia, some will say i am being soft or easy on it, cus i am biased about it, but believe me...character development, for me, is crucial on a story. I MUST LIKE OR HATE A CHARACTER BASED ON ITS ACTIONS, NOT BECAUSE THE WRITER FORCES ME TO HATE IT OR LOVE IT. So, yeah. THE THING i dont like about ZOOTOPIA.
I love zootopia.
I'll never stop loving it.
But....zootopia is not a perfect movie. It has one single flaw.
