I mean, disney's robin hood, the aristocats, anything don bluth until his “dark” age. I like organic looking art. I do respect digital inking and clean and crisp lineart, i do. But, scratchy art feels, to me, less industrialized and more personal, alive and vibrant. But, there is a difference between scratchy and....sketchy. \n\nParu itagaki's art is, sketchy....sorry, but, it is. Manga is a tricky mistress, manga has some very specific rules about it. Some Rules are bendable, like “all manga must be black and white only”, there are very good colored mangas, “all females in manga must be cute, sexy, or both” those rules can be bent and twisted at will, but....there is one manga rule that is sacred...ART MUST BE EASY TO THE EYE. The main issue here is, manga works with two tones. Black and white. Therefore, the artist must be very skilled to transmit depth, volume, size and shape with only two tones. Why do you think american comics use color, when it would be much cheaper and faster to work on black and white? BECAUSE COLORS ARE A TOOL, A SORT OF CHEAT CODE FOR COMICS, THE COLORS TELL US WHAT IS DEPTH, WHAT IS VOLUME, WHAT IS SHAPE AND SHADING. Colors, are a trick on comics, a necessary evil, in terms of cost and price....but, manga does not have that privilege. But...i digress. Itagaki's art is personal, I LOVE PERSONAL ART. One piece, one punch man....personal art in manga is scarce, since many authors simply go the generic route in order to please everyone. But...itgaki's art, to me....feels.....dirty. Rushed. An man....i can already feel the hatred.....but, sorry, i must be honest here. ONE PIECE'S ART IS PERSONAL, AND AMAZING. And again, art is a subjective thing. so. Please, keep that in mind. As far as i know, itagalki has no assistants on his work, again....maybe i am wrong. If this is a one man's work. I DO RESPECT IT EVEN A LITTLE MORE....but....i don't like his art style. I just don't. \n\nTHE STORY: this point....is the one that hurts me the most, BECAUSE MAN, THE FIRST STORY ARC WAS AMAZING, AN ACTUAL MURDER MYSTERY. IT WAS PERFECT. The ending was a little cliche, and legosi's framing was a little forced....but, it was a very good reading. It really was. Then the story became a cheap shonen manga....with rats transforming into a bear like monster....i mean. We went from a story with avian characters selling their unfetilized eggs for food money, drug dealers selling a drug made from bones and blood of prey to give predators a fix. to....super saiyan laboratory rats fighting crime.....no....just....no. \n\nTONE CHANGE IS A CAPITAL SIN ON ANY STORY. It rarely works. Specially when you go from a character driven interspecies drama with a murder mystery, to naruto with furries....i mean...COME ON! That was all kinds of cheap, itagaki simply took the easy route and went crowd pleasing after seeing how many fans he got, and again, I DO RESPECT THOSE WHO LIKE THIS MANGA, PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT. But....come on. Imagine BLACKSAD (a way better comic and story than beastars.) going from a film noir story....to blacksad and weekly assembling a giant robot to fight martian chickens from venus or whatever crap.....or dragon ball super going from a shonen action comedy to a drama about goku fighting parkinson and vegeta struggling with liver cancer after bulma's suicide.....tone change never works. \n\nCan a story be campy and silly sometimes? OF COURSE IT CAN!! man, one of my all time favorite stories is KYURANGER, A MASTERPIECE OF CAMP, SILLY AND FUN, but....kyuranger managed to add very strong moments of drama (chapter 16 will always make me cry man tears, always.) with moments of pure looney tunes comedy (garu in drag, princess champ, the baseball game) and very juicy character development (shou rompo's transition from silly elder looney to mentor and father figure for the team, stinger and champ's friendship.) my point is....a story can have comedy and campyness...but....if you began your story as a drama....stick to it as much as possible, adding other elements, but the drama must be the main genre of your story. \n\nBUBBLE GUM AND NUTS ARE COOL, BUT....you don't eat them at the same time....and if you do.....good luck trying to swallow that mess....that's beastars for me, two great things, that just don't mix. \n\nCHARACTERS: well....here it comes. The part many will hate me for the most.....i'll say it....CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT ON BEASTARS IS A GOOD JOKE, WITH A BAD PUNCHLINE. \n\nLegosi....moody and dark does not equal emo....and legosi, is an emo. Yes, i do understand itagaki's intention, discrimination, racism, prejudice, i get it....BUT, TONE IT DOWN, MAN. Dear lord....i've heard bauhaus and the smashing pumpkins songs more happy than legosi....legosi makes shinji ikari look like goku in comparison....ugh.....legosi is a walking upside down frawn. IF THE STORY WAS STILL A DRAMA, COOL. But...since it became a shonen....yeah, emos in shonen don't work. SPIKE SPIEGEL FROM COWBOY BEBOP IS A VERY DARK, MESSED UP, PREJUDICED, HATED LOATHED CHARACTER.....but, THE WRITERS MADE HIM LIKEABLE TO THE READER. I need someone to explain me that. Oh, you may use the FEMME FATALE card here....but, there is one bog fail on that, femme fatales are usually cunning and calculating evil characters, that use sex as a weapon or a way to achieve a goal. so....is haru a femme fatale then? No, she is not....she is a slut. And she is a slut because she is a bunny, and itagaki embraced all and every animal archetype and cliche to its core. Wolves are mean and evil, bunnies are slutish....”haru is a strong character” no...she ain't she is the archetypical damsel in distress, oh yeah, she plays the sex card....but....she is only furry bait. SHE BEGAN SO PERFECTLY. Yeah, the cute innocent trope was there, and seeing her engage on sexual situations waas in fact shocking, but....shocking soon became boring, like leomon's death, the first time it happened, it was amazing and dramatic...the other twenty thousand times....it was a joke nobody will ever find funny again. \n\nThe rest of the characters.....they are actually not bad. I mean it. If the story was not about legosi and haru....maybe i's like this manga a little more. Because, unfortunatley....when i see legosi and haru....i only see bad fanfiction verisons of nick wilde and judy hopps....and i mean “judy and nick's abortion comic” levels of bad, i won't even mention the name of the author of that disgusting comic....that thing makes me sick, and makes need to take a shower just to think about it. \n\nAnd..speaking of zootopia....ok, listen. BEASTARS IS NOT THE DARK VERSION OF ZOOTOPIA, IT'S NOT THE “ADULT” VERSION OF ZOOTOPIA. Please, stop saying that (yes, some people have told me that, and man...they just dont know how wrong they are...) compare zootopia to beastars, is like comparing a bike with a monster truck. You just don't do that. And yes, I KNOW ZOOTOPIA HAS FLAWS, BIG ONES, AND YES, I WILL TALK ABOUT THEM SOON. But....zootopia has a huge, huge point that defeats beastars.....IT'S WELL WRITTEN. IT HAS A TONE AND PACE and most of all...ALL CHARACTERS ARE LIKEABLE AND HAVE REAL MOTIVATIONS FOR THEIR PARTS ON THE STORY. Imagine judy screwing everyone to achieve her place at zpd, instead of working for it, judy failed...SHE ACTUALLY FAILED A LOT IN THE MOVIE. But, she eventually achieved her goals and gained everyone's respect and admiration, by effort and help from her friends....not by porking everyone around her. Nick overcame his extreme cynicism and hatred by learning from judy's optimism and honesty, not by being an emo hating himself for being a fox. And....that scene with boy scout nick....that's ten times more dramatic, painful and real, than any crappy emo motivation legosi has shown. So, please....stop comparing zootopia to beastars, YOU ARE WELCOME TO LIKE OR HATE ANY OF THOSE STORIES, IT'S YOUR TASTE, IT'S YOUR RIGHT....but, please. Do not compare them to each other. Ever. \n\nSome may say “YOU HATE BEASTARS BECAUSE YOU HATE SAD STORIES” well....some of my all time favortie stories, are sad stories....CASABLANCA, POM POKO WARS, BLACKSAD, MONONOKE HIME, THE LION KING, THE LAND BEFORE TIME, THE SECRET OF NIMH, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN. Those are stories with very harsh, very deep sad moments and some have very unhappy endings, but....THEY ARE ALL WELL WRITTEN. There is a difference between THE SECRET OF NIMH and THE PLAGUE DOGS. Both are movies about lab animals....but, man, they are waaaaay different from each other. So, to me, zootopia is the secret of nimh, and beastars is the plague dogs. Both are good movies...but....one of them, i just don't like. \n\nAgain, if you like this manga, READ IT, LOVE IT, SHARE IT, ENJOY IT. Can a story be campy and silly sometimes? Yeah, the cute innocent trope was there, and seeing her engage on sexual situations waas in fact shocking, but....shocking soon became boring, like leomon's death, the first time it happened, it was amazing and dramatic...the other twenty thousand times....it was a joke nobody will ever find funny again.
The rest of the characters.....they are actually not bad. I mean it. If the story was not about legosi and haru....maybe i's like this manga a little more. Because, unfortunatley....when i see legosi and haru....i only see bad fanfiction verisons of nick wilde and judy hopps....and i mean “judy and nick's abortion comic” levels of bad, i won't even mention the name of the author of that disgusting comic....that thing makes me sick, and makes need to take a shower just to think about it.
And..speaking of zootopia....ok, listen. BEASTARS IS NOT THE DARK VERSION OF ZOOTOPIA, IT'S NOT THE “ADULT” VERSION OF ZOOTOPIA. Please, stop saying that (yes, some people have told me that, and man...they just dont know how wrong they are...) compare zootopia to beastars, is like comparing a bike with a monster truck. You just don't do that. And yes, I KNOW ZOOTOPIA HAS FLAWS, BIG ONES, AND YES, I WILL TALK ABOUT THEM SOON. But....zootopia has a huge, huge point that defeats beastars.....IT'S WELL WRITTEN. IT HAS A TONE AND PACE and most of all...ALL CHARACTERS ARE LIKEABLE AND HAVE REAL MOTIVATIONS FOR THEIR PARTS ON THE STORY. Imagine judy screwing everyone to achieve her place at zpd, instead of working for it, judy failed...SHE ACTUALLY FAILED A LOT IN THE MOVIE. But, she eventually achieved her goals and gained everyone's respect and admiration, by effort and help from her friends....not by porking everyone around her. Nick overcame his extreme cynicism and hatred by learning from judy's optimism and honesty, not by being an emo hating himself for being a fox. And....that scene with boy scout nick....that's ten times more dramatic, painful and real, than any crappy emo motivation legosi has shown. So, please....stop comparing zootopia to beastars, YOU ARE WELCOME TO LIKE OR HATE ANY OF THOSE STORIES, IT'S YOUR TASTE, IT'S YOUR RIGHT....but, please. Do not compare them to each other. Ever.
Some may say “YOU HATE BEASTARS BECAUSE YOU HATE SAD STORIES” well....some of my all time favortie stories, are sad stories....CASABLANCA, POM POKO WARS, BLACKSAD, MONONOKE HIME, THE LION KING, THE LAND BEFORE TIME, THE SECRET OF NIMH, ALL DOGS GO TO HEAVEN. Those are stories with very harsh, very deep sad moments and some have very unhappy endings, but....THEY ARE ALL WELL WRITTEN. There is a difference between THE SECRET OF NIMH and THE PLAGUE DOGS. Both are movies about lab animals....but, man, they are waaaaay different from each other. So, to me, zootopia is the secret of nimh, and beastars is the plague dogs. Both are good movies...but....one of them, i just don't like.
Again, if you like this manga, READ IT, LOVE IT, SHARE IT, ENJOY IT. I am not here to tell you you are wrong for liking soemthing i dont like....i am not the nostalgia critic, saberspark or any of those lame ass youtube reviewers. And yes, YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO HATE THIS REVIEW I MADE, OR LIKE IT. And yes, you can comment on it....as long as you are as polite as i have been. It's all i ask.
