Character designs are perfect. Specially the dogs, muk and luk. The design of boris, the goose....I LOVE THE CHARACTER. But, his design....i don't know...it feels a little off from the rest, like it was done by another guy, or the character designer is less skillful designing birds NOT SAYING I HATE IT. But, it feels a little....not part of the movie, again, it must be personal nitpickery. \n\nThe color palette is surprisingly colorful, considering that the story is set in alaska, you'd expect less color, but instead, we get a good balance of colorful scenarios and cold, snow white settings, specially the indoor scenes, you can feel the warmth thanks to the proper use of colors and warm tones. \n\nSTORY: many people tend to say the story is the weakest point of this movie, specially since it's INSPIRED by real events, not understanding the huge diffference between being INSPIRED ON REAL and BASED ON REAL EVENTS. Balto is not a bio-pic. That's more than obvious. So, as a story, is it good? \n\nYes, it is...NOT PERFECT, but good. Think of this movie as ROCKY, with dogs instead of italian stallions :) \n\nit's the classic true and tried underdog story (stupid pun intented...) so, don't expect a lot from it. It's well done, well paced, so yeah, the story, is very good. \n\nThe characters are well defined, balto is good, steel is bad, jenna likes balto, the other dogs are there, boris is the surrogate father figure, luk and muk are the silly younger brothers, i love that “broken family” dynamic balto, boris, luk and muk have. Perhaps that's the real morality of the story, family, surrogate or not, it's important. \n\nSteel....is evil....there, sorry, but....steel is so bland as a villain, oh yes, his design and animation are perfect, but....he ends up feeling like a dime store version of scar. I LIKE HIM AS A VILLAIN. But, it feels more like he is jealous of balto, instead of being a “race” issue, since balto is a halfbreed and steel is a purebreed. If they had stayed with that “you are less dog and more wolf, so you can't be a part of us” thing, he would have been a better villain, but, they took the “the girl i like likes you instead of me, so i hate you” approach, well....racism in animated movies just got done properly now with zootopia, so, maybe they took the best choice going that route. \n\nThe movie is fun to watch, amazing animation, not disney levels, but, again, very, very good. This movie has its own vibe and mood, its own speed and swag. So, yeah, it's a great movie FOR ALL THE FAMILY, cus, it's silly, but not stupid, harsh, but not mean spirited. So yeah, i love it. \nBALTO 2: WOLF QUEST.\n\nWell....it's sequel time....i know, many of you are already afraid, cus, sequelitis is a serious disease, but, personally, i think wolf quest does not suffer from it....very much. \n\nI'll say it....BALTO 2: WOLF QUEST IS THE LION KING 2: SIMBA'S PRIDE. With less calories. Released in 2002. yeah....this movie took some ideas from lion king 2, released in 1998. I AM NOT CALLING IT A RIP OFF. IT AIN'T, but, they certainly share a couple things. \n\nSo, let's see what i like and what i don't like about this movie.\n\nCHARACTER DESIGNS: remember what i said about this movie and its lack of calories? Well, character designs suffer from it too. Something happened, the characters look....a little dumb, you know, like when a movie is adapted for tv, and designs are “streamed” or the “line milleage” is reduced, so they use less lines to draw a character? Yeah, that haoppened here, the characters lost some of the magic and life they had on part 1. also, the color palette is too “pastel”, colors feel like washed out. So the characters loose a little of the life and color vibrance they had on part 1, the designs are still good....but not part 1 good. \n\nThe animation is...not the best, this is a classic case of LOWER BUDGET CUS IT'S A DIRECT TO VIDEO MOVIE movie, and sadly, the animation suffers from it. BUT, IT IS NOT A CAPITAL SIN. Again, it had a shorter budget and the animators did the best with what they had....i've seen movies with bigger budget and crappier animation. \n\nSTORY: the part i don't like the most, i don't hate it. But....meh....\n\naleu is....a huge cliche of a character. She is likeable..but her motivation feels empty, “i am a wolf, so i must be free among wolves” not caring about her family....totally contrary to part 1's message. Part 1 is about family and union, part 2 is about leaving the nest and self discovery, and yes, i know, a sequel must expand the universe created by its predecessor. But....this movie does not do that, it simply alters it for good. Balto stopped being a story about family....when balto finally had a family. I never understood that mindset on writers “the character without a family has a family now, period, story's over, we wont explore it more, we won't show how his new life with a family is, it's over, over, over” balto as a father is an amazing concept, and him raising his sons with jenna, yeah, there's a lot of potential here, but....they went with the “i am different, i don't belong here” trope...and that really kills the movie for me. As i said, IT'S NOT A BAD MOVIE, but....it is based upon a bad idea. \n\nAnd again, the movie's tone, it really dumbs down the entire story. I think a story about balto teaching aleu to balance her halfbreed nature would have been much better, more chances for comedy and drama, more chances to develope characters...but, meh. THEY TRIED :) \n\nNIJU...ah, here we have the redeeming factor of this movie...first, i'll make it clear, NIJU, TO ME, IS NOT A VILLAIN, HE IS A CLASSIC ANTAGONIST. And actually....a way better antagonist than steel in part one. Niju is an obstacle for balto and aleu. Niju represents the old status quo of wolves “WE ARE WOLVES, WE WILL ALWAYS BE WOLVES” as in, wolves are evil, and always must be. I love that, cus, it's one of the tropes i hate the most in animation. And here, it's literally represented by a character. As for how he ends, i won't spoil, but, believe me, it's the ending he deserves. Also, voiced by mark hamill....NUFF SAID. \n\n\nBALTO 2: WOLF QUEST. Is not a bad sequel. It's just, too bland and fat free for its own good. But, any balto fan will find it a nice movie. Yes, there is the mail office plot thing, balto is now a mial dog, but he may lose his job due to the arrival of air mail....anyway, THIS MOVIE IS ABOUT BORIS. so....let's talk about it. \n\nCHARACTER DESIGNS AND ART: well....the designs are still simplified...very, even more than part 2 designs....and the budget is shorter...way shorter, the cgi water looks horrible. BUT. THEY MANAGED TO MAKE THE CHARACTERS LOOK MORE LIKEABLE AND DEFINED. Simple does not mean bad. And this movie is a good example of that. I actually consider this version of boris my favorite design. \n\nAnd then comes stella....she has feather boobs, those are feather boobs, she toys with her feather boobs. so...yeah, we have a love story here, and...yes, stella has feather boobs, and man she thicc....ahem....sorry. \n\nStella is a good character, aside from her very sexualized looks and voice, she is a nice character, her falling in love with boris is a little rushed, she just falls for him the first time he sees him, and i mean falls. She literally tries to seduce him the first moment she sets her eyes on him. Again, she is very sexualized on her animation, her voice...yeah....this girl....she is furry bait, folks, and it works. \n\nBalto, he is in the movie...yeah, he is...i mean it, balto has almost no screen time, he actually has an scene where he literally cues a dissolve to the next scene with the cliche of asking “where is boris?” \n\nthe other dogs, are very fun to watch, actually....this movie is about the supporting cast, that is not bad, I WISH ZOOTOPIA TALKED MORE ABOUT ITS SUPPORTING CAST AS THIS MOVIE DID. Kirby, one of the dogs...is my favorite, i love silly dogs. And man, kirby is silly. \n\nSTORY: as i said...this is a love story. Boris' love story. And, it is a fun thing. Boris is a low altitude flyer, and then, stella comes. The trouble is....they should have stayed with that story, instead of the mail plane one, the boris and stella story is actually very good, but, it's diluted among the other stories, that honestly go nowhere. \n\nBalto 3: wings of change is not a bad movie, it just focused won the wrong stories, leaving the best one a little diluted among them. \n\n\n\nso....what i think of the balto movie series?\n\nI LOVE IT. \n\nYes, they are not perfect movies. But, even zootopia has flaws. Balto is a movie series that does not try to change your life, but it gives you a very entertaining experience, if you can get over its flaws, you'll have a good time watching them.
