Background/History:
Grim is the latest in a line of mortals who have bonded with the reincarnated soul of Naknir, Grim's Awakened form. Naknir is a god that "died" in battle with the Lord of the Desolate Expanse, a God of Chaos called Maldir, whose hunger threatened to devour all. Naknir was able to contain a weakened Maldir in a realm between realms. However, Naknir had taken too much damage to be able to regenerate and, fearing Maldir would break free again, chose to reincarnate.
When a god reincarnated they must bind their soul with that of another living being, the two share a symbiotic relationship and essentially become one sharing knowledge and experiences. That's why Gods seek ones they feel will be the best fit for them. Should they fail to find a suitable host, they will slowly become corrupted forced to feed off the life force of the living to retain even a semblance of their former selves.
When Grim was an infant he was kidnapped by a cult. The cult, trying to summon Xygnir - Grim's Dark form, so that they could bind him to the infant Grim and raise him to be a puppet to them. They were successful with the binding, but Xygnir had other plans. He dispatched the cult and converted their souls into members of his shadow army.
Xygnir, being a god of the underworld and shadows, had darkness permeating him. The darkness began seeping into Grim, clouding and twisting his soul. This was able to be stopped by Naknir. However the darkness carried with it illness, so that if it couldn't carry out its task it'd kill the source. Grim began to get violently ill.
Xygnir's absence among the gods did not go unnoticed by a group of clerics, mages, monks, and priests known as The Order of the Eternal Brigade. Many of whom knew of those who were bound with gods. They were able to trace Xygnir's energy to Grim. There they found a very ill infant on the verge of death.
They took Grim to a temple where they prayed to the gods to save him by binding a soul to Grim that would counterbalance the darkness of Xygnir with light. After much debate from the gods about who amongst them would be able to bond with Grim and provide the necessary light it was decided that the god, Qynir - Grim's Light form, would be the one to bond with the trio of souls. Thus Grim was cured by Qynir's light and would be unaware of having the other souls, merged with his, until he was 8.
When he was four he worked for a dragon called Medgar Skullcrusher, the portmaster of his home town of Indûn. Medgar had bought Grim's family out of debt, which had occurred after a harsh winter. During that winter his father was injured in a mining accident and as his mother worked on a farm she received very little pay, since she mainly harvested crops. Medgar bought the debt and in exchange Grim would work for him until the debt was paid off.
On Grim's eighth birthday a fox, named Grigor Cindermaw, came to Indûn. Grigor, a powerful mage well known across the mortal realm of Naglarial, paid off Grim's debt and took Grim as a student. Grim excelled quickly in magic, surpassing even Grigor's longest apprentices in the matter of a year. Due to Grim's natural ability, he was often bullied. It wasn't until a fight between Grim and another boy occurred in which half of the boy was covered by shadow did Grigor think that Grim may be a godbound.
The only way to be sure if someone is godbound is to do a ritual known as a "Soul Delve". To do this both parties must be willing and in the same spell circle. The spell circle is to act as a barrier to the two inside it from any outside attacks and vice versa. It's also used to help the two get some privacy and achieve a meditative state easier.
During a "Soul Delve" the two open their minds and spirits to one another allowing each other to see what truly lies beneath the physical form. There Grim found himself with his master as well as three others, all wolves like him. These were the gods he'd been bound to.
From there Grim learned more about what he could do in each form as well as the rest of what his master could teach him.
Xygnir being a god of the underworld and shadow could do shadowmancy, use hell magic, and summon armies of the damned like his shadow magic.
Qynir being a god of the heavens and ice can do cryomancy as well as things like call down comets, sun rays, create and control black holes and even release a large discharge of energy compared to a supernova.
Naknir, being a god of creation and destruction, can open tears in between realities, create and destroy matter, erase people and things from having ever existed. He can also do what the other two can, thanks to being bound to them.
