It is graphic, at times it is extremely so, and may upset you.\n\nYou have been warned.\n\nChapter 2: Investigation, Then Trial\n\nMy name is Gawain Wrynn, but everyone calls me Gwynn. Recently I was enrolled into Hope's Peak Academy with 15 other students. It's a school that takes the best of the best and molds them into leaders. At least that's what I thought. The principal of our school is a cat doll named Mononeko. He expects us to kill each other. Unfortunately, one of my classmates is dead. Worse yet, one of my classmates is the killer.\n\nDay 05:\n\n[i]Bzzzt![/i]\n\nThe TV in the room clicks on.\n\n\"Finally!\" Mononeko says, \"Geez, I was starting to wonder if any of you had the gall to do it. Listen up kiddos, it's time for the investigation. To help you I've gathered some information on the victim, such as how they were killed and where. I'll give you some time to investigate then it's trial time. You can use your student handbooks to take pictures of clues you find.\"\n\nWith another buzz the tv turns off. I look at the other fourteen classmates. \"HV, Stevie, Nina and Ignatius. You all take Valencia to the gym. Stay there and protect her in case anyone else tries anything. When she wakes see what she knows. Spike and I will examine the crime scene. The rest should split up into pairs and take sections of the school to look for any evidence the killer might have tried to get rid of.\" I say.\n\nSamuel eyes pierce into me like daggers, \"Why should we follow your orders?\"\n\n\"Sorry Samuel, I didn't hear anyone else coming up with a plan.\" I snap back.\n\n\"Hey, take it easy, I'm sure Samuel didn't mean anything by it.\" Finn says.\n\nWithout another word the rest disperse, leaving Spike and I to check out the crime scene\n\n[i]Ba-Bing![/i]\n\nThe student handbooks alert us that they've updated. I quickly pull mine out and open it to find a new folder with the Mononeko File. The Mononeko File reads:\n\nMononeko File 1:\n\nVictim: Ian Power, The Ultimate Debater\n\nMethod of execution: Blood loss from internal bleeding and a knife wound through the heart. The victim was stabbed in the stomach when fending off their attacker. Wounds appear to be through self defense. The victim's face is missing, presumably cut off. The body of the victim was found in the room of fellow student Valencia Queen, The Ultimate Archer.\n\n\"Wait so this is Valencia's room?\" I ask aloud.\n\nI open the door to see Ian's name on it. \"If this is Valencia's room then why is Ian's name plate on it.\"\n\nSpike looks up at me. \"Maybe he switched them?\"\n\n\"Maybe.\" I reply.\n\nValencia's room was identical to mine save that the room was pink rather than blue and green. There were blood stains on the carpet and a bloody knife near the bed. Ian's faceless corpse layer sitting against the back wall of the shower. The facial markings looked expertly cut almost like someone had precisely cut it with a small, sharp tool. The numbers 11 11 1 7 was written in blood on the wall. Due to the blood loss suffered by Ian, he probably had dragged lines between the each of the 1s in the 11s. A knife is in Ian's chest, no doubt the thing that finished the job. \n\nThe door is slashed and the lock seems to have been opened by being taken apart. However, this was not with a screwdriver as the screws are on the floor and seem to have bits of metal alongside them.\n\nI leave Spike to examine the corpse more closely as I move over to the desk. By the desk, which is scratched - from what looked to be fingernails dragged across it - and blood-stained, was an aluminum, dented, waste bin. Inside the waste bin was a disc. On it read \"Ian Power's Motive Video.\" I took this down to the multimedia room, leaving Spike to analyze the crime scene further.\n\nI arrived at the multimedia room, pulled up to a computer, and inserted the disc. Once the disc loaded a video message began playing.\n\n\"Hello viewer! Welcome to Ian Power's Motive Video.\" Mononeko said. \"Ian Power was born on February 3rd. Ian was always debating since he could talk. However, Ian Power wasn't actually part of the influential Power Aerospace Corporation. You see he was switched at birth with another baby. Ian's actual name is...\"\n\nThe video cut to a black screen with white letters that read: \"Ian, to find out who you really are, you only need to graduate.\"\n\nThe video ends. I eject the disc. Ian's name wasn't really Ian. Then who was he and what happened to the real Ian Power?\n\n\"Attention ladies and germs, please make your way to elevator for, duh duh duh duh, the class trial!\" Mononeko announces on the tv screens and over the intercom. I'm the last one to arrive at the elevator. Valencia is awake and frankly looks frightened, but I don't blame her. The fact that Ian was in her room doesn't favor her.\n\nWe each enter the trial room. The walls of the trial room were blue, red, and gold. 16 stands sat in a circle for each of the 16 students. One of which was taken by an image of the late Ian a red x crossed over the grey picture. Off to the left sat Mononeko. He waved to us as we entered.\n\n\"Welcome to the class trial! Before we begin, here's how it will work. You all will debate and choose who you think was the blackened, the one who murdered your classmate. Majority vote rules. Choose correctly and only the blackened will be punished. If you pick the wrong person, however, then all besides the blackened will be punished. Fail to vote and the result is the same. Now with those rules out of the way anything goes.\" Mononeko says.\n\n\"Excuse me Mononeko, what exactly is the punishment you were talking about?\" I ask.\n\n\"Oh did I forget to mention that little detail? The punishment is execution.\" Mononeko replies, matter-of-factly.\n\n\"How is that a little detail?!\" Spike says.\n\nMononeko shrugs, \"Whatever, get on with the trial.\"\n\n\"Now, how should we begin?\" I ask.\n\n\"I don't really see the point in this, I mean Ian was in Valencia's room. That proves she's the murderer, right?\" Rufus says.\n\n\"Need I remind you that if we go making careless accusations and pick the wrong person all of us except Ian's murderer will get the axe?\" Norah points out.\n\n\"Well then where do we begin?\" Rufus retorts.\n\n\"I suggest we start with the murder weapon. It was clearly the bread knife sticking out of Ian's chest.\" Spike says.\n\n\"Well obviously, the serrated edges on the knife would catch then rip.\" Samuel says.\n\n\"Anyway it would have led to the internal bleeding. He was probably wanting a quick out.\" Lynn says.\n\n\"Not so fast.\" I say, \"The room was scratched up, clearly showing signs of a struggle. This was no suicide.\"\n\n\"Well that certainly doesn't lessen our scope of possible suspects.\" Nico says.\n\n\"I know who took the bread knife from the kitchen.\" Stevie says.\n\n\"Who was it?\" Hv asks.\n\n\"It was Ian.\" Stevie says.\n\n\"Why would he grab a knife? Was it to protect himself?\" Hv asks, concerned.\n\n\"Not exactly. I shaded the first page I found in the notebook in Valencia's room and found this note.\" Spike says.\n\nThe note read:\n\nHey there,\n\nI want to talk about something important. Please come to my room tonight. Be sure to check the nameplate so you don't go to the wrong room.\n\nSincerely,\n\nIan Power\n\n\"I don't understand when I talked with Ian last night before we switched rooms he was visibly shaken. He wouldn't of let anyone in. He told me so himself.\" Valencia says.\n\n\"Did you write it?\" Spike asks.\n\n\"W-well no but-\" Valencia says.\n\n\"Exactly. He pulled a ruse. He wanted you to switch rooms. He changed the nameplates and, if his target hadn't turned the tables, he would've been right here pointing the finger at you. It would've been the perfect alibi had it not gone wrong.\" Spike says.\n\n\"I can't believe that he-\" Valencia says, growling.\n\n\"He fooled you. He fooled all of us. However, he failed in his plan and his killer is one of us. We need to find out who.\" I say.\n\n\"Well I can be certain it wasn't Valencia.\" Spike says. \"She's the Ultimate Archer. From one look you can tell she's never hunted. Is that correct, Valencia.\"\n\n\"R-Right I've never hunted a day my life. Though I do know how to use a knife to get arrows out.\" Valencia says.\n\n\"Well that means that you didn't kill Ian because of the fact his face was cut off.\" Spike says.\n\n\"Wait, how does the fact his face was cut off make her innocent?\" Nina asks.\n\n\"Because of how his face was cut off. It was done with a precise tool though, given a bit of the jaggedness around the edges, the tool was broken.\" Spike says.\n\n\"Well then it must of broke off when they were taking the door knob off. They figured it was jammed, though we now know it was locked.\" I say.\n\n\"The culprit could have thought it was locked.\" Finn says.\n\n\"No, because only the bathrooms in the female dorms locked. Mononeko said so in the note that told us to come to the gym to meet each other.\" I shoot back.\n\n\"What were you saying about the lock?\" Arthur asks.\n\n\"The lock was dismantled by a sharp tool.\" I say.\n\n\"Couldn't it have been a screwdriver?\" Koyo asks.\n\n\"No, it was definitely like a blade, a screwdriver wouldn't have broken off.\" I say.\n\n\"So the culprit used a scalpel to pick the lock, so what?\" Finn says.\n\n\"Hold it right there!\" I say.\n\n\"What's wrong, man?\" Finn asks.\n\n\"You just made a fatal error.\" Spike says.\n\n\"I never said it was a scalpel. Just a sharp tool. Furthermore, I never said the size of the tool.\" I say.\n\n\"Did anyone figure out those numbers?\" Spike asks.\n\n\"I ran every possible configuration and got nothing.\" HV says.\n\n\"I think I figured it out I say.\"\n\n\"Indeed. I think it's about time we wrap this up. What do you think Gwynn?\" Spike asks.\n\n\"Right, so here's what I think happened.\" I say. \n\n\"After Valencia and Ian switched rooms, Ian wrote a note to the culprit. Ian then switched the nameplates and placed the note under the door of the culprit's room. He then went to the kitchen before returning to Valencia's room. Later on the culprit came to the room. Ian invited the culprit in under the claim he had something important to tell him. The bread knife was pulled on the culprit but the culprit had a knife of his own, a scalpel. The culprit stabbed the scalpel into Ian's gut. Ian dropped the bread knife after the culprit removed the scalpel. Ian, losing strength, gets into the bathroom where he locks the door and barely makes it into the shower. The culprit uses his scalpel to take apart the door knob, the scalpel breaks in the process. After taking the door knob off the culprit sinks the bread knife deep into Ian's chest. The culprit took Ian's face as a morbid trophy. Ian had left a message spelling out the culprit's name unbeknownst to the culprit, 11 11 1 7. That string of numbers was actually letters, turning it 180 degrees it's F-I-N-N. I believe that's your name, Finn Altoviti.\"\n\n\"Oh please that's purely circumstantial.\" Finn says.\n\n\"You admitted to knowing it was a scalpel. Also if you have nothing to hide show us your scalpel. If it's broken be ready to explain it in minute detail until each one of us are satisfied.\" Spike says. \n\n\"I don't have to show you anything, this is purely circumstantial evidence.\" Finn waves his left hand dismissively.\n\n\"Then show us the scalpel.\" I say.\n\n\"Never!\" Finn growls.\n\n\"Well it seems like this is wrapped up. It's voting time!\" Mononeko says.\n\nI cast my vote for Finn, hoping the rest do as well. Finn has to be the criminal.\n\n\"The votes are in. Will you make the correct choice or the dreadfully wrong one?\"\n\nAll the votes save one was for Finn. The other one, I'm assuming Finn's was for Valencia. A sound like a slot machine paying out on a jackpot rings out.\n\n\"You got it correct! Ian Power's murderer was... Finn Altoviti, the Ultimate Surgeon.\" Mononeko says.\n\n\"But Ian Power wasn't Ian Power, so who was he?\" I ask. \n\n\"Right, well, since he's dead I suppose I'll tell you. The one you know at Ian Power was actually Valencia's brother who was switched at birth. His real name was Nathaniel Queen. The real Ian Power never made it out of infancy.\" Mononeko says. \"Now then Finn, since you killed and got caught, that means you die. It's punishment time!\"\n\nA door opens up and we all enter. One side had iron bars save for a metal door which would click open. The lights behind it were off. The other part was black and white tile. We took a spot there. Finn's punishment was about to begin.\n\nThe Ultimate Surgeon is surrounded by his classmates. He looks around at the faces of his classmates. The look on their faces is a mixture of anger, confusion, and disgust. A metal collar licks around Finn's neck. It drags him past the students for several feet before slamming his body onto a gurney. The gate closes, separating him from the other students. Lights click on showing a standard operating room. Finn looks around as the heart rate monitor starts. [i]Beep... Beep... Beep.[/i] The \"Operation Day\" Punishment begins as the surgeon is surrounded by mononeko in scrubs.\n\n The mononeko jab syringes full of clear liquid into Finn. [i]Beep.. Beep.. Beep..[/i] Finn howls in pain as the mononeko continue their work, cutting him with scalpels and injecting him with more of the clear liquid. He squirms and twists, trying to get away as the punishment continues. The mononeko work quickly. Finn lets out a cough of blood as the mononeko inject him once more. [i]Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.[/i] Finn's movements stop as the heat monitor beeps for a final time. The gate slowly clicks open as the students gather around the body with expressions of horror upon their faces.\n\n\"That was truly sick.\" I say.\n\n\"Thank you for the complement and congratulations on surviving your first class trial.\" Mononeko says.\n\nWe return to our rooms, Spike going to chat with Valencia and comfort her. My name is Gawain Wrynn, but everyone calls me Gwynn. Recently I was enrolled into Hope's Peak Academy with 15 other students. It's a school that takes the best of the best and molds them into leaders. At least that's what I thought. The principal of our school is a cat doll named Mononeko. He expects us to kill each other. Unfortunately, one of my classmates is dead. Worse yet, one of my classmates is the killer.

Day 05:

Bzzzt!

The TV in the room clicks on.

"Finally!" Mononeko says, "Geez, I was starting to wonder if any of you had the gall to do it. Listen up kiddos, it's time for the investigation. To help you I've gathered some information on the victim, such as how they were killed and where. I'll give you some time to investigate then it's trial time. You can use your student handbooks to take pictures of clues you find."

With another buzz the tv turns off. I look at the other fourteen classmates. "HV, Stevie, Nina and Ignatius. You all take Valencia to the gym. Stay there and protect her in case anyone else tries anything. When she wakes see what she knows. Spike and I will examine the crime scene. The rest should split up into pairs and take sections of the school to look for any evidence the killer might have tried to get rid of." I say.

Samuel eyes pierce into me like daggers, "Why should we follow your orders?"

"Sorry Samuel, I didn't hear anyone else coming up with a plan." I snap back.

"Hey, take it easy, I'm sure Samuel didn't mean anything by it." Finn says.

Without another word the rest disperse, leaving Spike and I to check out the crime scene

Ba-Bing!

The student handbooks alert us that they've updated. I quickly pull mine out and open it to find a new folder with the Mononeko File. The Mononeko File reads:

Mononeko File 1:

Victim: Ian Power, The Ultimate Debater

Method of execution: Blood loss from internal bleeding and a knife wound through the heart. The victim was stabbed in the stomach when fending off their attacker. Wounds appear to be through self defense. The victim's face is missing, presumably cut off. The body of the victim was found in the room of fellow student Valencia Queen, The Ultimate Archer.

"Wait so this is Valencia's room?" I ask aloud.

I open the door to see Ian's name on it. "If this is Valencia's room then why is Ian's name plate on it."

Spike looks up at me. "Maybe he switched them?"

"Maybe." I reply.

Valencia's room was identical to mine save that the room was pink rather than blue and green. There were blood stains on the carpet and a bloody knife near the bed. Ian's faceless corpse layer sitting against the back wall of the shower. The facial markings looked expertly cut almost like someone had precisely cut it with a small, sharp tool. The numbers 11 11 1 7 was written in blood on the wall. Due to the blood loss suffered by Ian, he probably had dragged lines between the each of the 1s in the 11s. A knife is in Ian's chest, no doubt the thing that finished the job.

The door is slashed and the lock seems to have been opened by being taken apart. However, this was not with a screwdriver as the screws are on the floor and seem to have bits of metal alongside them.

I leave Spike to examine the corpse more closely as I move over to the desk. By the desk, which is scratched - from what looked to be fingernails dragged across it - and blood-stained, was an aluminum, dented, waste bin. Inside the waste bin was a disc. On it read "Ian Power's Motive Video." I took this down to the multimedia room, leaving Spike to analyze the crime scene further.

I arrived at the multimedia room, pulled up to a computer, and inserted the disc. Once the disc loaded a video message began playing.

"Hello viewer! Welcome to Ian Power's Motive Video." Mononeko said. "Ian Power was born on February 3rd. Ian was always debating since he could talk. However, Ian Power wasn't actually part of the influential Power Aerospace Corporation. You see he was switched at birth with another baby. Ian's actual name is..."

The video cut to a black screen with white letters that read: "Ian, to find out who you really are, you only need to graduate."

The video ends. I eject the disc. Ian's name wasn't really Ian. Then who was he and what happened to the real Ian Power?

"Attention ladies and germs, please make your way to elevator for, duh duh duh duh, the class trial!" Mononeko announces on the tv screens and over the intercom. I'm the last one to arrive at the elevator. Valencia is awake and frankly looks frightened, but I don't blame her. The fact that Ian was in her room doesn't favor her.

We each enter the trial room. The walls of the trial room were blue, red, and gold. 16 stands sat in a circle for each of the 16 students. One of which was taken by an image of the late Ian a red x crossed over the grey picture. Off to the left sat Mononeko. He waved to us as we entered.

"Welcome to the class trial! Before we begin, here's how it will work. You all will debate and choose who you think was the blackened, the one who murdered your classmate. Majority vote rules. Choose correctly and only the blackened will be punished. If you pick the wrong person, however, then all besides the blackened will be punished. Fail to vote and the result is the same. Now with those rules out of the way anything goes." Mononeko says.

"Excuse me Mononeko, what exactly is the punishment you were talking about?" I ask.

"Oh did I forget to mention that little detail? The punishment is execution." Mononeko replies, matter-of-factly.

"How is that a little detail?!" Spike says.

Mononeko shrugs, "Whatever, get on with the trial."

"Now, how should we begin?" I ask.

"I don't really see the point in this, I mean Ian was in Valencia's room. That proves she's the murderer, right?" Rufus says.

"Need I remind you that if we go making careless accusations and pick the wrong person all of us except Ian's murderer will get the axe?" Norah points out.

"Well then where do we begin?" Rufus retorts.

"I suggest we start with the murder weapon. It was clearly the bread knife sticking out of Ian's chest." Spike says.

"Well obviously, the serrated edges on the knife would catch then rip." Samuel says.

"Anyway it would have led to the internal bleeding. He was probably wanting a quick out." Lynn says.

"Not so fast." I say, "The room was scratched up, clearly showing signs of a struggle. This was no suicide."

"Well that certainly doesn't lessen our scope of possible suspects."  Nico says.

"I know who took the bread knife from the kitchen." Stevie says.

"Who was it?" Hv asks.

"It was Ian." Stevie says.

"Why would he grab a knife? Was it to protect himself?" Hv asks, concerned.

"Not exactly. I shaded the first page I found in the notebook in Valencia's room and found this note." Spike says.

The note read:

Hey there,

I want to talk about something important. Please come to my room tonight. Be sure to check the nameplate so you don't go to the wrong room.

Ian Power

"I don't understand when I talked with Ian last night before we switched rooms he was visibly shaken. He wouldn't of let anyone in. He told me so himself." Valencia says.

"Did you write it?" Spike asks.

"W-well no but-" Valencia says.

"Exactly. He pulled a ruse. He wanted you to switch rooms. He changed the nameplates and, if his target hadn't turned the tables, he would've been right here pointing the finger at you. It would've been the perfect alibi had it not gone wrong." Spike says.

"I can't believe that he-" Valencia says, growling.

"He fooled you. He fooled all of us. However, he failed in his plan and his killer is one of us. We need to find out who." I say.

"Well I can be certain it wasn't Valencia." Spike says. "She's the Ultimate Archer. From one look you can tell she's never hunted. Is that correct, Valencia."

"R-Right I've never hunted a day my life. Though I do know how to use a knife to get arrows out." Valencia says.

"Well that means that you didn't kill Ian because of the fact his face was cut off." Spike says.

"Wait, how does the fact his face was cut off make her innocent?" Nina asks.

"Because of how his face was cut off. It was done with a precise tool though, given a bit of the jaggedness around the edges, the tool was broken." Spike says.

"Well then it must of broke off when they were taking the door knob off. They figured it was jammed, though we now know it was locked." I say.

"The culprit could have thought it was locked." Finn says.

"No, because only the bathrooms in the female dorms locked. Mononeko said so in the note that told us to come to the gym to meet each other." I shoot back.

"What were you saying about the lock?" Arthur asks.

"The lock was dismantled by a sharp tool." I say.

"Couldn't it have been a screwdriver?" Koyo asks.

"No, it was definitely like a blade, a screwdriver wouldn't have broken off." I say.

"So the culprit used a scalpel to pick the lock, so what?" Finn says.

"Hold it right there!" I say.

"What's wrong, man?" Finn asks.

"You just made a fatal error." Spike says.

"I never said it was a scalpel. Just a sharp tool. Furthermore, I never said the size of the tool." I say.

"Did anyone figure out those numbers?" Spike asks.

"I ran every possible configuration and got nothing." HV says.

"I think I figured it out I say."

"Indeed. I think it's about time we wrap this up. What do you think Gwynn?" Spike asks.

"Right, so here's what I think happened." I say.

"After Valencia and Ian switched rooms, Ian wrote a note to the culprit. Ian then switched the nameplates and placed the note under the door of the culprit's room. He then went to the kitchen before returning to Valencia's room. Later on the culprit came to the room. Ian invited the culprit in under the claim he had something important to tell him. The bread knife was pulled on the culprit but the culprit had a knife of his own, a scalpel. The culprit stabbed the scalpel into Ian's gut. Ian dropped the bread knife after the culprit removed the scalpel. Ian, losing strength, gets into the bathroom where he locks the door and barely makes it into the shower. The culprit uses his scalpel to take apart the door knob, the scalpel breaks in the process. After taking the door knob off the culprit sinks the bread knife deep into Ian's chest. The culprit took Ian's face as a morbid trophy. Ian had left a message spelling out the culprit's name unbeknownst to the culprit, 11 11 1 7. That string of numbers was actually letters, turning it 180 degrees it's F-I-N-N. I believe that's your name, Finn Altoviti."

"Oh please that's purely circumstantial." Finn says.

"You admitted to knowing it was a scalpel. Also if you have nothing to hide show us your scalpel. If it's broken be ready to explain it in minute detail until each one of us are satisfied." Spike says.

"I don't have to show you anything, this is purely circumstantial evidence." Finn waves his left hand dismissively.

"Then show us the scalpel." I say.

"Never!" Finn growls.

"Well it seems like this is wrapped up. It's voting time!" Mononeko says.

I cast my vote for Finn, hoping the rest do as well. Finn has to be the criminal.

"The votes are in. Will you make the correct choice or the dreadfully wrong one?"

All the votes save one was for Finn. The other one, I'm assuming Finn's was for Valencia. A sound like a slot machine paying out on a jackpot rings out.

"You got it correct! Ian Power's murderer was... Finn Altoviti, the Ultimate Surgeon." Mononeko says.

"But Ian Power wasn't Ian Power, so who was he?" I ask.

"Right, well, since he's dead I suppose I'll tell you. The one you know at Ian Power was actually Valencia's brother who was switched at birth. His real name was Nathaniel Queen. The real Ian Power never made it out of infancy." Mononeko says. "Now then Finn, since you killed and got caught, that means you die. It's punishment time!"

A door opens up and we all enter. One side had iron bars save for a metal door which would click open. The lights behind it were off. The other part was black and white tile. We took a spot there. Finn's punishment was about to begin.

The Ultimate Surgeon is surrounded by his classmates. He looks around at the faces of his classmates. The look on their faces is a mixture of anger, confusion, and disgust. A metal collar licks around Finn's neck. It drags him past the students for several feet before slamming his body onto a gurney. The gate closes, separating him from the other students. Lights click on showing a standard operating room. Finn looks around as the heart rate monitor starts. Beep... Beep... Beep. The "Operation Day" Punishment begins as the surgeon is surrounded by mononeko in scrubs.

 The mononeko jab syringes full of clear liquid into Finn. Beep.. Beep.. Beep.. Finn howls in pain as the mononeko continue their work, cutting him with scalpels and injecting him with more of the clear liquid. He squirms and twists, trying to get away as the punishment continues. The mononeko work quickly. Finn lets out a cough of blood as the mononeko inject him once more. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep. Finn's movements stop as the heat monitor beeps for a final time. The gate slowly clicks open as the students gather around the body with expressions of horror upon their faces.

"That was truly sick." I say.

"Thank you for the complement and congratulations on surviving your first class trial." Mononeko says.

We return to our rooms, Spike going to chat with Valencia and comfort her. We turn in for the night, but I doubt any of us will get much sleep tonight.
