To keep up appearances, the kits had to hire a part time nanny, that's what Chi had claimed. For outsiders, two kits living alone on their own could seem suspicious. Their house was small and located in a quiet neighborhood, so it was an auspicious ground for rumors to start circulating Chi had said.
The house was kind of like a safe house to the kits. It felt like a home away from home, yet the kits weren't quite sure where the original home could have been if this wasn't it.
The house had been rented a long time ago from the original owners, judging from the old bills that were found in the attic and stuffed away in some cardboard box and eventually forgotten along with piles of useless junk.
The rent was regularly being paid from a bank account whose owner the kits didn't know along with some monthly allowance to cover most of the kits' needs. It wasn't too much, but they made do with what they were given. With all the time that had passed since the original lease was made, the kits had started to have their suspicions about whether the person who signed it would still be alive, or if he was just a cover like their own lives were and there was nobody behind the bank account any longer.
Old newspapers, wartime memorabilia, gardening supplies and such had littered the attic when the kits had arrived to their new home but the place was otherwise good. It was as if somebody had known the kits would need to settle here for a time and had prepared a place for them to stay, although a lifetime too early.
Chi and Ai had fun cleaning the house, though. They picked rooms for themselves and decorated them to their liking with the things they found lying around. Chi filled his room mostly with books and the local newspapers that he read to get a grasp of the local history. Ai was more creative and filled her room with things more suitable to her personality. It took her weeks, but she managed to turn a model doll found in the attic into a life size lookalike of the mascot of a metal band she was a fan of. Complete with electrocuted look, an old guitar, dark shades and heavy chains binding him, Ai called her creation Teddy and gave him a special spot as a doorman to her room.
The kits had no parents, but they had recently enrolled to a school to make their hiding in the plain sight of the society more plausible. There was the option of returning back to the woods and maybe even further to the desert where there would be no worry about being discovered, but the modern times had made the kits soft. They didn't want to let go of the comforts they had learned to know in their short lives. Fragments of memory from times when living in the woods had been the only option for them came back to Chi from time to time. He wanted to keep the new things this age had to offer them, such as warmth and electricity. Chi was fond of his phone and of all its apps. Games, mostly.
So Chi had approached Ai with his concerns and the kits had managed to find a candidate they had successfully persuaded into thinking she would be working for the kits' parents that were staying abroad for an unspecified time. Sarana was a pretty young cat looking to raise some extra spending money. Apparently she had some other interests in taking the job as well. Her eyes had seemed to sparkle when she had met the kits for the first time.
For one reason or another, Sarana wasn't too concerned that she wouldn't meet her 'employers' directly, but seemed to prefer discussing the terms of her contract as well as other things with Chi instead, who with his precocious behavior created the illusion that Sarana could have been dealing with an adult.
A few weeks passed after Sarana had agreed to babysit them. A while after Ai came home and cooped up to her room Sarana came knocking on the door. She was worried about Ai and had asked whether she was feeling okay and if she would come downstairs to play with Chi.
Ai was lying on her bed, sorting through her feelings. "I already played this morning, It's Chi's turn now. And I don't feel like playing anything anyway," Ai had said referring to the gaming console they had downstairs.
Sarana got a thoughtful look on her face which then turned into a mischievous grin as if she had suddenly gotten an idea. "I know of a very fun game which leaves you relaxed for a long time to come. I think you could use a distraction of some sort to clear your thoughts. Here, let me in and I'll show you how the game's played..."
