In this chapter, Sunny and Rings brave a fate worse than death... clothes shopping!\n\nSome quick notes, and these may include spoilers, so feel free to skip ahead if you'd like to figure some of this stuff out for yourself.\n\nFirst, Kit Canaveral is the name of a cartoon geared toward six to fourteen year old boys, with a focus on jets and other airborne weapons of mass destruction. If you're thinking TaleSpin or maybe Swat KATS, you've got the right idea. I briefly mentioned the series in a previous story, The Reluctant Babysitter... it's extremely popular with the children of Woodland, and Byron in particular never misses an episode.\n\nSecond, Myn-Zai (pronounced \"mine-zai\"... say it slowly!) is a brand of thought projection apparel. A device woven into the back of the shirt accept signals from the spine and displays the wearer's thoughts on the front; generally expressive shapes and colorful patterns for children. It's a reference to Sunny's original design, which in turn was heavily influenced by the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Shirt Tales. Adults almost never wear the shirt, save for a handful of performance artists with incredible mental discipline.\n\nFinally, Woodland currency (oaks) is decorated with the images of the first generation of hybrids. The original Byron appears on the quarter oak. The characters in this story are the distant descendants of the original cast. The oak is roughly equivalent in value to the American penny or Japanese yen.\n\nThat should just about cover everything! Until next chapter, folks!",

"writing": "NO MORE SUNNY DAYS\n\nCHAPTER V\n\nSunny pressed on, doing her best to ignore the family of felines. While walking past, she felt a sharp tug of her tail… she spun around on her heels and saw the white kitten with her hands tucked behind her back, looking up at the sky with the most innocent expression she could muster. Sunny fired back a severe glance before running to her mother, whose long legs had already taken her to the edge of the mall fountain. Rings raced to close that gap as well, with his corduroy-covered legs rubbing together with enough friction to leave a fiery trail behind him.\n\n“Hold out your hands, guys!” Madge shook a few small coins out of her purse and into her children’s outstretched hands. “Drop this into the fountain and make a wish!”\n\nRings looked down at the quarter oak with one eyebrow raised. “I wish you gave me more money.”\n\n“I wish you hadn’t tried to deafen me. Just… just put it in the fountain. And don’t tell anyone what you’re wishing, or else it won’t come true.”\n\nAs Rings flicked his coin into the fountain, Sunny stared at hers, pinched between her thumb and forefinger. Burned on the front of the small wooden disc was an image of a bear, who despite his advanced age reminded her of a close friend. She wistfully looked up at the ceiling, pondering her wish, before a twisted smile crept on her face.\n\nOn the outside, she kept her lips pressed together, but on the inside, she screamed, “I wish those two dumb kids would get the worst diaper rash ever! Big red butts you could see from a mile away!”\n\nShe threw the coin into the fountain with a flick of her wrist, and followed her mother into the front door of Kizz Bizz.\n\nMadge set her hands on her children’s shoulders. “I promise this won’t take long. We’ll just pick up a few odds and ends to replace the clothes you’ve outgrown…” She paused to look down at her plainly dressed daughter. “…and get something more becoming of a lady for Radiance.”\n\nSunny looked up at her mother with a furrowed brow. “Oh, Moooooom…”\n\n“Let’s start with some panties. Go ahead, honey, take whatever you like.”\n\nSunny halfheartedly picked through the packages of underwear hanging on the rack. Too loud, too pink, too frilly… wait a minute, Kit Canaveral? What was this doing in the girl’s section? She heaved a sigh as she reached for a package near the back of the peg. She wasn’t thrilled with the selection… frankly, the only thing she wanted on her behind was four aisles down, in the babies section.\n\nBut wait, what was this? Sunny squeezed a package that felt thicker than the rest. She tore it off the rack and examined it carefully. A clear plastic window on the front revealed plain white panties with elastic on the waist and legs. She sounded out the words on the top of the bag… “White Cot-ton Briefs.” There were no weird colors or annoying cartoon characters, and they had more heft to them than the flimsy panties she was wearing. They weren’t diapers, not by a long shot, but they would do.\n\n“I want these!,” Sunny chirped, proudly holding her discovery up to her mother.\n\n“Really?” Madge gave the package a cockeyed glance. “They’re kind of… boring.” She reflected on her own childhood. Majesty didn’t embrace toilet training at first, but after she was finished, she took the most colorful underwear in the store home as a trophy, and bragged about them to anyone who would listen for at least a week. She would have hung them from a flagpole as a declaration of victory if she had known how.\n\n“You said I could have whatever I wanted, right?”\n\nMadge groaned. “I did.” She really had to stop falling into these self-laid traps.\n\nSunny threw the package into her mother’s shopping cart, her cheeks bridged by a huge, gleeful grin. She ran off to a neighboring aisle and started digging through the shirts stuffed in a clearance bin. “Don’t wander off too far!,” Madge called out as she wheeled her cart over to the boys section, with Rings just a tail’s length away. “I’ll meet you right there after I grab a few things for your brother.”\n\nMadge set her son down on a bench as she leafed through the rainbow of clothes perched on the top shelf. “How about some new pants, kiddo?”\n\nRings shifted uncomfortably in his corduroys, which had his thighs in a death grip. “Can I have some shorts instead?”\n\n“Sure thing,” Madge replied as she pulled some folded blue fabric from a shelf. She motioned Rings to stand, then unfolded the shorts and held them up his waist. They weren’t going to win any fashion contests, but she wasn’t picky about what her son wore, as long as it wasn’t his sister’s panties.\n\n“Hey Mom, look what I found!” Sunny charged toward her mother, clutching a plum colored blouse. “Sunny, you already have more purple shirts than… oh my.”\n\n“See, it’s a Myn-zai! It’s just like the one I had when I was a baby, but bigger!”\n\nAnd more expensive, no doubt. Thought projection shirts were all the rage with kids a few years ago, and back then, Madge had the income to afford one. Now, there was no way she could fit it into her budget, especially with the toys she’d already promised Sunny and Rings earlier.\n\nMadge slowly shook her head. “Honey… if I could afford this, I’d buy it for you, but-“\n\nNot to be deterred, Sunny forced the blouse into her mother’s hands. “I’m sure you can! Just look!”\n\nMadge lifted one of the sleeves and glanced at the price tag, just to humor her daughter. What she saw left her speechless. Thirty-three oaks?! The last Myn-zai she bought was a hundred and seventy five, and it was half the size!\n\nMadge shook her head, as if to throw the disbelief from her brain. “You… you got this out of the clearance bin?”\n\n“Yep!,” came her daughter’s enthusiastic reply. “I can have it, right?”\n\n“I… suppose so…” Madge racked her brain, trying to find an explanation for the drop in price. Technology never stays expensive for long, but it was more likely that the shirts just fell out of fashion. She hadn’t seen one on a child in nearly a year. Adults never wore them, since their clearer, more organized minds made the images on the shirt embarrassingly specific.\n\nAfter putting the brakes on her train of thought, Madge seized an opportunity to get something for herself out of the deal. “You can have the shirt, but you have to get a dress too. And this time, you have to wear it.”\n\nSunny’s smile fell off her face and through the floor. “But Mom, I hate-“\n\n“That’s the deal. No dress, no shirt.”\n\nSunny scowled. “Fine. You take the fun out of everything, Mom.”\n\n“That’s what your father used to tell me. Now come on, we’ll get that dress and a couple shirts for your brother. Once we’re done here, the two of you can change in the bathroom.”\n\nSunny followed her mother and brother to the girls’ aisle of the store. There was only one change she really wanted, but that ship had sailed.\n\n",
