"writing": "NO MORE SUNNY DAYS\n\nCHAPTER IV\n\nThe van slid into a parking spot near the front entrance of the Pine Hills Mall, and came to an abrupt stop. Madge held the steering wheel in a death grip. Her fur stood on end, her heart hammered her ribcage, and her eyes sat on the edge of their sockets … it was as if every part of her body wanted to escape and run back to the house screaming. You could hardly blame them, considering all the Silvers had gone through to get to their destination.\n\nMadge turned around, hoping that her children were in better shape. “Is everybody all right?”\n\nSunny looked up at her mother, each eye trailing off in a different direction. “…maybe. Is everything supposed to spin like that?”\n\nRings bounced up and down in his seat. “That was the most awesomely awesome ride I’ve even had in my life!”\n\n“Yes,” Madge muttered as she stumbled out of the van. “Now let’s never speak of it again.” She slid the rear door open, and Rings popped out, as if his seat had been spring-loaded. He danced around his mother excitedly as she reached into the van and pulled out a still-dazed Sunny. “I’m surprised you stayed dry for that trip,” Madge mused as she gently set her daughter down on the pavement. “Heck, I’m surprised I stayed dry for that trip.”\n\nMadge felt a tug of her tail. “Let’s go, let’s go, let’s GOOOO!,” Rings squealed, trying with all his might to drag his mother to the mall’s waiting doors. Madge shot her son an irritated glance. “Now just settle down. The mall’s not going anywhere… and neither are we until you behave.”\n\n“You’re fluffing!,” Rings barked back.\n\n“It’s bluffing. Also, try me.” Madge looked down at her son with frosty blue eyes that blew through his defenses and sent a chill down his spine. He dropped his mother’s tail, but looked up at her with a sour, defiant sneer, desperate for some scrap of victory in his moment of defeat. He turned around, shoulders hunched, and marched toward the mall, with his mother and sister following close behind.\n\nThe Pine Hill Mall didn’t look like much from the outside… it was just a red brick building that seemed to stretch out to infinity. However, from the inside, it was a palace. Dazzling sunlight poured in from the windows on the roof and danced on the polished tiles of the floor below. Colorful storefronts lined the walls, offering everything a person could possibly want and a few things nobody could possibly need. In the middle of it all was a massive fountain, with pine trees lining the edges and a jet of water that leaped up to the ceiling. You could spend your entire life in a place like this and die happy.\n\nMadge raised her voice, breaking the hold the mall had on her children. “Here’s the game plan. We’re going to Kizz Bizz to pick up some new clothes for the two of you-“\n\n“Awww… I hate that place!,” Rings moaned, breaking his mother’s train of thought. He knew that every time they went there, he’d have to try on everything in the store before he could leave.\n\n“Let me finish,” Madge continued. “Then we’re going to hit a few toy stores… the Masters of Might for you, Rings, and Plushworks for you, Sunny.” The little raccoon perked up. She loved stuffed toys- she didn’t know a single girl her age who didn’t!- and Plushworks had the best around. She was pretty sure she wouldn’t be able to afford one of the new toys she saw on television, but maybe she could convince her mother to chip in if she pushed the right buttons.\n\n“When we’re done there, we’re going to relax at Capital Tea.” It wasn’t the kids’ favorite place to hang out, but Madge figured she deserved a little downtime after her narrow escape on the road. Her heart had only just stepped down from racing to a brisk power walk, and at the moment, she was more in the mood for a nice, blissful coma.\n\nMadge dug two small white sticks out of her purse and handed them to her children. “Remember, stay close by! And if someone tries to grab you, aim this at their face and press the button at the top.” \n\n“Like this?” Rings pointed the wand right between his mother’s eyes and squeezed the trigger. Madge fell to her knees, clapping her hands over her ears. “Y…yes, but it’s not a-“\n\nRings crushed the trigger with his thumb. For a few seconds, the world turned grey, blotted out by the relentless, piercing shriek of the Pitch Hitter. Madge howled, her eyes brimming with tears. “You little- GIVE ME THAT!” She scrambled for the stick the moment Rings’ finger left the trigger, snatching it out of his hand before he could make the buzzing in her ears permanent.\n\nMadge grabbed her son by the shoulders and stared straight into his eyes, her fangs bared and her icy gaze set to absolute zero. “YOU. YOU will stand next to me. No more than six feet away, do you hear me? Not an inch more.” She stood up and cleared her throat, trying to regain her composure with her head still caught in a cloud of nausea. “Sunny can keep hers if she uses it responsibly. It’s only for strangers, right?”\n\nSunny had seen her mother angry before, but fang angry was trouble. Even her father didn’t mess with fang angry. “Y-yes ma’am.”\n\n“Let’s go.”\n\nMadge set off for the fountain in the center of the mall with her two cubs on her tail, and Rings especially close. Sunny slowly swept her head from left to right and back again as she walked, hoping to take in the full splendor of her surroundings. Visits to the mall were a rare treat, and she wanted to make the most of the opportunity. She breathed in deeply as she walked past the pretzel shop, savoring the smell of freshly baked sourdough and tangy mustard. She tilted her ear toward the arcade on the second floor to catch the cacophony of noises spilling out, some silly and others serious. Sunny then turned her attention toward the escalator carrying shoppers to the second floor. She loved the escalator, and hoped there would be a chance to catch a ride on it before the day was through.\n\nAfter stumbling on a loose tile, Sunny decided to take a break from her sightseeing and looked straight ahead. Not far from the fountain were a striped cat and her two kittens, excitedly buzzing around their mother with enough energy to make even Rings look like a turtle. One of the children was striped like her mother, but with a blue-grey coat, while the other was bright white, with red and black spots and a stubby tail. Both were wearing white blouses adorned with bows, along with colorful pleated skirts. \n\nSkirts that did little to cover the diapers underneath.\n\nSunny looked away and took a deep breath through clenched teeth. Although her eyes were averted, her other senses could still pick up on the cues. She could hear the plastic lining crinkle between their legs as they raced around their mother. She could even pick up the scent of oil and powder, along with the distinct odor of the brand they were wearing. Nappykins, the good stuff. Sunny asked for them by name since she was old enough to talk, and knowing that others were enjoying them while she was forced to go without was almost unbearable.\n\nThe raccoon blinked away a tear as she pulled the hem of her shirt over her panties… those stupid, stupid panties. Sunny was learning the hard lesson of all addicts… withdrawal is hell.\n\n",
