"description": "This almost went into Nioverse, but I decided to take it all the way to a full color picture. Yes it's small, but you can't deny there's color there. See? There's browns and yellows and blues and even a touch of red!\n\nAnyway. I'm here to report that I watched Kamp Koral, the latest addition to the maybe-too-long-running Spongebob Squarepants franchise. Look, I loved this show from the moment I watched the pilot Reef Blowers. It quickly filled that hole in my heart that had previously been filled by Ren and Stimpy, and for the next three seasons, it was always a delight. But after Stephan Hillenberg left the show to do the first movie, that probably should have been the curtain call. Instead, we've been up to our nostrils in seasons, television movies, movie movies, and spin-offs, of which Kamp Koral is the first.\n\nPut bluntly, Kamp Koral is more Spongebob, but it's set before puberty, if Spongebob ever had that. And everything is freakishly detailed, from the patterns on Squidward's tentacles to the bits of fur on Sandy Cheeks' face that extend just below her lip, making you want to reach for your tweezers. Most of the staff was involved in its production, so all the voices are familiar and there's boatloads of slapstick, which is somehow effectively sold by the way too tangible for comfort characters. So it's functional, but predictable and perfunctory, like you've seen this all before without the disturbing new coat of paint. Spongebob is on its eleventh or twelfth season, so it's hard to imagine that there's any stone the writers haven't already turned a couple of times.\n\nI'm not going to get into the debate that Stephen Hillenberg didn't want this show to exist. One, that's been disputed... some people on staff say he was against it, and others say he was involved in the early stages of its development. Two, it's immaterial, because as we all learned with the Ren and Stimpy debacle thirty years ago, it's Viacom's property, and they can do anything they want with it regardless of the creator's objections. The bottom line is, we got Kamp Koral whether we liked it or not. I'm just not sure how much Spongebob the public can stomach after twelve seasons, three movies, innumerable television movies (most awful... how do you waste David Bowie?), and... wait, a Broadway musical? Oy gevalt. The bottom's gotta fall out of this franchise eventually, just as it did with Ren and Stimpy. Maybe Viacom should put this series on ice for a while and test the adage \"absence makes the heart grow fonder,\" rather than pushing their luck and testing the OTHER adage, \"familiarity breeds contempt.\"\n\nAnyway, here's a picture of Sandy Cheeks, in her younger form, in a diaper for no other reason than I thought she would be cute in one. If Viacom can milk a single idea over a span of decades, so can I.",
