"description": "This was one of those \"hey, this will only take a few minutes!\" drawings that... didn't take only a few minutes.\n\nAnyway. You may be lost, so let me guide you through this one. Back in 1984, video games first started dabbling in martial arts, and Karate Champ (developed by Technos and released by Data East) was one of the early pioneers in the genre. Played with two joysticks, one for movement and the other for attacks, Karate Champ was sluggish and awkward, but it deserves credit for its innovation, as well as its touches of humor.\n\nOne thing about the game that was always puzzling to me was a bonus stage where you took a break from fighting human opponents and went toe to hoof with an angry cow. Turns out that this was a reference to a real life martial artist, Mas Oyama, who fought an ox as a publicity stunt. Not to be outdone, his understudy Willie Williams sparred with a bear as a demonstration of his own strength. It wasn't a particularly vicious bear, getting only mildly annoyed by Williams' roughhousing, but the battle nevertheless had a strong impact on Japanese pop culture. If you've seen an African-American character in a fighting game, chances are he was inspired at least in part by Williams.",
