Royal Duties
It had been a year since Rex had last seen the hallways of Buckingham Palace. A year since he'd stepped down from being Top Dog and taken up a new position in the strange and distant land of America, where Guy Fawke's day was on July fourth, people drove on the wrong side of the road and creamed corn was considered edible. A year away from what had been his first and, until recently, only home. A year-
Well... it should have been a year. It was actually just a few months.
"You see Charlie, that's the problem with the whole country. No organization. Back here people know what they should be doing; bowing and all that. It's most uncouth to be coming back on a non-anniversary like this."
"And yet, here you are..."
Two corgis sat outside the steps of the palace, a very subdued reunion after what had been a rather chaotic parting. But then neither Rex nor Charlie had particularly cared that much for each other, the first because he always preferred to pay attention to things rather than people, and the second because he held little respect for any dog that wasn't himself. Still, the two were technically equals now, what with the passing of the Gold Collar of Office from one dog to the other and Rex's elevation to First Dog of some house that was white somewhere. So they maintained a polite indifference towards one another. Around them various leaders and dignitaries made their own introductions and plans, completely outside the canine sphere of consideration.
"Well yes, to be honest it was just to get away from the puppies for a few days."
"That thing can breed?"
"Oh Mitzi is fine once you get to know her. Mostly. Sometimes. Anyway, what have you been up to since I was gone?"
"I have instituted a 45% dinner tax and restored the dignity of the office of Top Dog."
"Neat, when is dinner anyway?"
"Whenever I say it is. Come, we should get inside."
Idle talk done for now the pair made their way inside, a butler closing the door behind them. Rex approved; while the hired help in his new abode were attentive enough, especially in the realm of paw massages and pooper-scoopering, they lacked the quiet dignity of true indentured servitude. You just didn't get the same atmosphere from unpaid interns. It was a positive pleasure to see people scurry ahead of them to open doors. America may have been the land of the cheeseburger, but it lacked in bootlicking. Fortunately it also had pizza.
Making their way into the inner chambers, Rex was about to ask where the other two corgi residents of the castle had got to when he ran into both of them, almost literally. The duo, whose names Rex had quite forgotten already, had been crossing the hallway ahead of them when all four canines nearly collided.
"Rex?"
"Nathan!"
"Nelson! What are-"
"Ahem!"
"Aah.... my Liege..."
Charlie's voice seemed to make his two companions sit up and pay attention. Rex hadn't really concerned himself with hierarchy during his time in the palace, but it seemed quite obvious to him now that Charlie had taken to his new position with gusto and installed himself as de facto alpha in the vicinity. The older corgi pair seemed to be quite intimidated, maybe even a bit fearful of their new leader, immediately lining up in an orderly queue of two and staring down at the floor.
"Your liege indeed. Rex is back, given his current position I expect you to treat him with almost the same respect you would me, is that clear?"
"Yes my liege."
"Excellent."
"Hang on a sec Charlie, 'liege'?"
"Or 'lord', depending on the occasion. Surely even you have a title? Your bitch doesn't just call you Rex now does she?"
"Oh no, she calls me lots of other things too; Stud, Top Dog, Daddy..."
"That's not... Nevermind!"
Charlie seemed rather annoyed for some reason. It was possible he'd hoped that when his predecessor had left for the new country that he'd never come back. Or possibly that he'd look a little more run down. Perhaps he simply wasn't able to handle the responsibility of the office of Top Dog with as much flair as he himself had? But he certainly seemed to have a handle on keeping everyone in line. As Rex thought these things over he became aware of a lengthening, utterly silent pause.
"Well? You know your duty, get to it!"
The command, positively barked by Charlie, seemed to shock the elder corgis out of their impasse and they immediately stood to attention once more. Rex was a little confused as to what was going on, but he began to understand once he saw Charlie's posture. The stout-legged canine was standing facing away from his compatriots, all four feet planted firmly on the ground, staring over his own shoulder with his tail raised. There were only two situations when this was called for, and given that the bitch was behind him, it probably wasn't going to involve mating.
Doing just as he suspected one of his former companions (what was her name? Lady something he was sure of it...) gave a curt bow, lowered her head and tucked her nose beneath Charlie's tail. Though he had expected the entire affair to be a rather brief thing, as it often was among dogs, he became increasingly surprised to see the pair taking their time. Charlie seemed to be positively relishing the experience, not taking his gaze off of his inferior for a single second, looking astoundingly smug as he watched her sniff his rear, which she was doing with a resigned expression and closed eyes, as if the whole thing was something she had long ago learned to deal with, unpleasant though it might be. Indeed the new top dog seemed to positively gloat about what was just a simple bit of canine courtesy.
"Enjoying the privilege of sniffing a royal ass? Of course you are!"
"I say, old chap, this... isn't exactly necessary is it?"
"Of course it is, to maintain the dignity and order of office! Don't tell me your bitch doesn't offer you the same service?"
"Oh all the time, there's this really incredible thing she does with her tongue that-"
"That's not the same thing! This is about respect, not pleasure!"
"Well that may be, but I think that perhaps you are enjoying this a bit much to be telling me off Charlie!"
There at least Rex knew he had a point. It took the palace's new alpha a second or two to realize what his predecessor was talking about. During the short time that his butt had been sniffed he'd managed to get fully and rather obviously erect. Despite becoming aware of this, Charlie shrugged it off with a dismissive laugh. Rex could see Nelson rolling his eyes at this and it really did seem that this was a regular occurrence in the palace now. This somewhat surprised the expat canine; though he'd been introduced to a number of... experiences that had substantially eroded his tendency for embarrassment around sexual matters, the openness and complete lack of surprise with which everyone was handling this unnerved him more than a little.
"Mmm, just one of the perks of office, Do you want a sniff?"
"If you think that I'm going to-"
"You can give or get, I'm sure our two companions wouldn't begrudge the... what are you, 'first dog' now? Well whatever you are I'm sure your rank entitles you to as much attention as I."
"Well..."
"Alright now, I think that's enough from you. Save some for everyone else won't you? Care to join, Rex?"
The confused corgi just stood there, considering his options. He was sure he didn't want his rear to receive quite as much attention as Charlie's was getting. Well... pretty sure; it did look just a little inviting. And as for giving a sniff himself, surely not! He'd only ever done that for his bitch and it would be uncouth to do so here, wouldn't it? As the first obligatory butt sniff came to an end and the two dogs stepped apart he could feel eyes on him as he considered his options...
