T'was the night before Christmas,
And all through your house,
A creature's been stirring,
And it's not a mouse...
Something has awoken you from your Christmas Eve slumber; there are strange noises downstairs and it sure as hell doesn't sound like Saint Nick. There are quiet bumps and thuds and muffled cursing. You debate in bed for a few minutes the merits of getting up to investigate weighed against the chances of being stabbed by a burglar, but eventually decide to check things out once everything quietens down.
When you get downstairs it's immediately obvious that something's up. Your front door has been forced open and there are wet, muddy pawprints everywhere. It's hard to tell what they are given how smudged they are, or even whether it's just one set. Some seem small, rat or rabbit maybe, but some are definitely larger like some sort of canine. It's impossible to tell much from the disorganized mess, but it's quickly apparent that your fridge has been raided and your Christmas ham taken. As have the milk and cookies left out for Santa, and all the carrots for his reindeer. Whoever did this must be pretty high up on the Naughty List.
There's only one clue, a crumpled and slightly wet note left on your cookie plate, written in letters so shaky and wild it almost looks as if a spider has crawled across the page with dirty feet. With some effort you manage to decipher the words before your eyes.
'Thanks for the food. Sorry for the mess. Left you a gift as payment. It has accessories and doesn't need batteries. Have fun...'
As you read the note you become aware of a muffled whimpering sound nearby. It's coming from beneath your tree, which has been stripped of nearly all its lights. There's a colorful, blinking glow coming from below it however and your eyes are drawn to what lies there.
It's small, brown and fuzzy. Cuteness in squirrel form. The teeny buck appears to have been very neatly tied in strings of lights, tied up and utterly helpless. A snug gag stops them from making too much noise and a very attractive bow is keeping their tail nicely raised, showing off what's sure to be a snug, warm and welcoming entrance. Despite struggling energetically it's quite obvious that the strings of lights have been tied almost professionally to allow the smallest possible chance of escape and keep their prisoner in the most embarrassing and compromising of positions. The brushtail looks up in shock as you approach, eyes going wide as he sees you. You grin back as you notice a few other pertinent details that fill you with glee.
There's also a fun looking toy and some lubrication to help it fit. The note was right, this gift won't need batteries, or an instruction manual for that matter. Because you know exactly what you're gonna be doing with it tonight...
