First Day of School It was a warm, summer's morning. At the local bus stop, several cubs were waiting for the school bus which would take them to Franklin O. Young Elementary School. A fox cub who was starting second-grade waited beside a big red slide for the bus to show up. His parents had already left for work, dropping him off at the bus stop on their way to the restaurant they owned. His name was Friendly. As the fox waited for the bus, he spotted two younger fox cubs talking. He listened to what they were saying: "Hey you, you wanna see a trick?" asked one of them, who was wearing a red shirt and blue coveralls. "Is it a magic trick?" asked the other fox, who was wearing a space themed t-shirt and a yellow pair of pants. "Uhh.. Yeah! It's the bestest magic trick you've ever seen!" "Oh goodie! What is it?" "Just stand still for a little bit, and I'll show you!" "Okay!" "Now put your paws over your eyes." The older fox leaned against the slide and balanced on one foot, curiously watching to see what the magic trick would be. "Okay 'q'.... elevendy... red.... HOKEY POKEY!" Friendly gasped as he saw what happened next. The cub who'd had his eyes closed waiting for a magic trick had suddenly become the victim of a prank. "TADA! I made your pants disappear!" laughed the prankster fox cub. The other fox cub uncovered his eyes and blushed deeply, panicking as he tried to pull his brand new space-themed t-shirt over his now-revealed training pants. "H-HEY! That wasn't magic at all!" the cub yelled, struggling to get his pants back up before anyone noticed that he had wet his pull-up. "Nope! But it was funny, huh?!" Friendly felt sorry for the poor fox cub, and went over to help him. "It's okay buddy" said Friendly, helping the younger cub to pull his pants back up over his training pants. "Thank you sir!" said the fox cub, smiling back at Friendly. "You're welcome. My name's Friendly, what's yours?" "Dakota! Nice to meet you!" said the little fox cub. Friendly smiled at Dakota and gently held his paw. "Don't worry, Dakota. I didn't see anything - your secret's safe with me" said Friendly, referring to Dakota's wet pull-up. "W-well thank you sir" said Dakota, shyly tugging his shirt down. Friendly blushed a little at being called 'sir' by the little fox. "You don't need to call me sir, just call me Friendly. Maybe we can play together at recess?" suggested Friendly. "Sure! I'd like that very much" said Dakota, letting go of his shirt and almost forgetting all about his damp training pants. "Okay, I'll see you at recess then" said Friendly, as the school bus arrived and all of the cubs got on board. "See you later Friendly!" called Dakota, as he went on to sit near the back of the bus. At recess, Friendly rushed out into the playground, glad that he'd made a new friend. The second-grade fox looked around for Dakota as the other cubs all came out to play too. After searching in numerous places, Friendly finally spotted Dakota on the swing set and went over to join him. Dakota was idly swinging on the swing set. His legs dangled under him as his shoe covered toes would occasionally graze the wood chip covered ground underneath him. "Hi again" said Friendly, standing next to Dakota and smiling at him. "I've been looking for you" The fox raised his head quickly to the familiar voice. "Friendly! Hello!" He smiled now at the sight of a familiar face. His tail wagged happily behind him as a faint and muffled crinkle could be heard from his pull-up underneath. Friendly heard the younger fox's pull-up crinkling underneath his pants and he wagged his tail too, feeling proud of himself for helping the younger cub and befriending him. "Do you want me to push you?" offered Friendly, standing behind Dakota. The fox smiled to his friend and nodded. "Mhm!" "Okay, here we go!" said Friendly, pulling the swing back and pushing Dakota forwards. As the little fox came swinging back, Friendly reached up and pushed him again, wagging his tail as he saw Dakota's pull-up peeking out of his pants. Dakota giggled as he was pushed along. Each swing got him a bit higher then the last. He enjoyed the wind whooshing past his ears and the instance of weightlessness at the very top of the swing. His tail swayed with the swinging. Friendly smiled happily as he saw how happy Dakota was. He pushed the little fox higher and higher in the air. "Is that high enough?" asked Friendly, starting to tire of pushing the swing. "Ya!" The swinging fox happily yelped as he got high up in his swing. "Okay then, here's the last one" said Friendly, reaching up and giving Dakota one last, big push before walking over to the other side of the swing. The fox kit giggled as Friendly sent him flying higher into the air than before, and then slowly came to a stop. "That was fun!" said Dakota Just then, the school bell rang. Recess was over. "Already?" sighed Friendly, looking sadly at his new friend. Suddenly he had an idea. "Dakota, would you like to come to my house after school?" asked Friendly. "Ya please!" cried Dakota excitedly, bouncing up and down with joy. "Alright, meet me on the bus. I'll be near the front" said Friendly. "Okay!" That afternoon, Dakota looked around for Friendly on the bus. He didn't have to look very far at all. "Hi Friendly!" said Dakota. "Hi Dakota" said Friendly, moving over so his friend could sit next to him. He smiled warmly as he looked at Dakota's pull-up peeking out of his pants. "Thank you for inviting me over to your house" said Dakota, giving Friendly a sweet smile. "You're welcome" said Friendly, putting his paw around Dakota. The little fox's tail wagged happily as he felt his friend's paw across his waist, and a muffled crinkle came from his training pants underneath. Friendly wagged his tail too as he heard Dakota's training pants crinkling and gently ruffled his friend's headfur. Soon, the bus arrived at the bus stop where the two fox kits had met before school. "Here we are" said Friendly, walking behind Dakota to the front of the bus. "Yay!" cried Dakota, as he ran off the bus to meet his mom. "Hi mom! Can I go over to Friendly's house?" asked Dakota Dakota's mom smiled at him as she saw Friendly come over to them. "Okay sweetie. Be a big boy for mommy won't you?" Dakota smiled at his mom and then and ran over to Friendly. "I can come over!" he said excitedly. Friendly's dad walked over to Dakota's mom and they shared their phone numbers in case of an emergency, while Dakota and Friendly waited impatiently. "Come on dad, let's go!" called Friendly, tugging on his dad's paw. "Hang on Friendly!" chuckled his dad. Before long, Friendly and Dakota were at Friendly's house. Friendly showed Dakota his big train set in his bedroom. "Wow!" squeaked Dakota, as he watched the various trains chugging along the blue tracks. The trains went over big bridges, through green and purple tunnels, red railroad crossings, and there was even a big station in the middle of it all. Friendly smiled and stood next to Dakota, and they watched the trains together as they went all around the bedroom. Suddenly, Dakota looked rather flustered. He pulled his new space-themed t-shirt down over the front of his pants like he had earlier at the bus stop. Friendly guessed what had happened and softly held onto Dakota's paw. He then gently pulled his friend's pants down, revealing his damp training pants underneath. Dakota looked sadly at Friendly, still holding one corner of his t-shirt. "It's okay buddy" said Friendly, smiling warmly at Dakota and giving him a big hug. Dakota felt better as Friendly hugged him, and he wagged his tail happily. Friendly chuckled as he heard Dakota's pull-up crinkling and he picked his friend up, scooting off to the bathroom. Soon, Dakota was in a fresh, new pull-up and his pants lay forgotten near the bedroom door. "Let's play with the trains some more!" he squeaked excitedly. "Okay!" said Friendly, smiling as he saw how much fun Dakota was having and lay down next to him. "Watch out... those two are gonna crash!" The two trains on a collision course crashed into each other at a cross-over and pushed each other off the track. Dakota couldn't stop himself from laughing as the trains continued to run off the track, running amuck all over the bedroom floor. Friendly laughed with him. Friendly's dad came to check on the two boys in the bedroom, and chuckled as he heard their giggling. "Sounds like you're having a lot of fun" said the fox. "Dakota, your mom's gonna be here soon to pick you up" "Okay" said Dakota, smiling at Friendly and standing up as Friendly's dad left the room. Friendly lay on the floor and looked up at Dakota, looking at the younger fox's training pants. "I guess you haven't quite got the hang of the potty yet" said Friendly. "No... honestly I wear diapers most of the time, but mommy wanted me to try training pants to be a big boy for school" said Dakota. "It's okay, you look kinda cute in them. I could be your big brother, and you could be my little brother" said Friendly. Dakota blushed a little at being called 'cute' but he liked the idea of having a big brother. "I'd like that!" said Dakota, smiling and sitting down next to Friendly, continuing to play with the trains. When Dakota's mom came to pick him up, Dakota hugged Friendly. "Thank you Friendly, for everything" he said, as his friend helped him to pull his pants on over his pull-up. "No, thank you for coming. I had fun" said Friendly, giving Dakota a big hug. "Me too" grinned Dakota, wagging his tail happily. "Bye Dakota" said Friendly, as he helped his friend down the stairs and to the front door, where his mommy was waiting for him. "Did you have fun Dakota?" she asked "Uh-huh!" said Dakota, running to his mom and giving her a big hug. "They had a lot of fun" said Friendly's dad. "Dakota can come over any time he wants" he continued. "Thank you Mr. Brush" said Dakota's mom. "Maybe Friendly should come over next though" "Okay, that would be great" said Friendly's dad. "Bye Friendly!" called Dakota, as he and his mom went out the front door. Friendly waved goodbye to his new friend and sighed contently, he hadn't been looking forward to going back to school at all, but meeting Dakota had made up for all of it. -- The End --
