"description": "By this point, the producers had evidently abandoned the pretense of continuity between challenge and lull. Oh the story time still kept to it, but unless it was convenient for there to be a transition, then just like other challenges... they got blipped.\n\nThe difference this time, was that the party did not get blipped very far at all. In fact, they were barely taken out of their camp! Some might even have considered rushing back, even... before the two-foot long carpet fibres suddenly began to rise. And thicken.\n\nDid it take anyone very long to realize that they were shrinking? Truthfully there weren't many frames of references after all; only the coils of sunset-red wool rising up and thickening, being able to see the weave more clearly... perhaps the hessian mat from which it all grew expanding beneath their feet would be further clue.\n\nEither way, it wouldn't be too huge a jump to go from 'we're shrinking' to the realization that camp was now effectively a great deal further away, and the 'stalks' around them were not only now coming up on a third again the height of and over the tallest among them, but dense enough as to obscure their view almost entirely.\n\nIf it weren't for having such a clear view of the ceiling above, and one of the light fittings, there would have been a real risk of getting lost!\n\nOh, but there was *Minerva's voice!\n\n \t\n[t]The Seventh Challenge[/t]\n\n\"Everyone!\" it sounded as if she was calling for them, and despite the usual clarity, there was a clear directionality to it as well. That, and just a glimpse of the smoke from their camp fire wisping upwards. As if whoever was behind their predicament wanted to give the cubs a very clear sense of direction. \"The goal of your challenge is to find your way back to me, and your camp! But there are hazards waiting for you, so please be careful!\"\n\nAnd what option did they have but to do as they were told? Consequences of non-cooperation aside, it was hardly as if there were any other place that the group could make their way to, nor anywhere else that held any hope of fixing their sizes-\n\nPity was the first to encounter trouble. The scent that she picked up was distinct. Sweet, but too much so. Like a very particular sort of rot that -\n\nThe squelch sensation under her footpaw was the first sign that, for some strange reason, her sense of smell had failed her up until the very last moment, and by then it was too late. A glance down, the sight of something thick, and red coiled around her lower leg, a spread of... were those petals? A four part jaw? It looked like it had teeth...\n\nAnd then yanked.\n\nPity would be very lucky if she went down both legs at once, lest the hot, clenching passage into which she was suck-dragged leave one behind and force a split that was ambitious even for the bendy little 'yote gymnast.\n\nStill, the group could hear one another! They were too far apart to render aid, but perhaps a yip of distress before she Pity had been enclosed in that hot, pressing, writhing space and any sounds she cared to make were muffled below her friends' hearing.\n\nOthers had more luck. Jacob, Poly, and Connie did not have the same immediate encounter as Pity, and nor had Petal. Only Daniel encountered the scent and, instincts serving him very well, wisely opted not to find out what was creating that warning odor.\n\nBut the next any of them knew, Petal had given a cry, just as surprised as Pity's had been! Because for whatever reason, she, too, had found that her nose barely gave her a hint of warning before she had put her foot in something unpleasantly yielding, finding it coiled and grasped and tugged. Just as surprised, she too was hauled down before she could resist! Whatever quarrel she and Pity had had, both now shared the same fate: imprisoned in a humid, clenching hole felt unpleasantly fleshy and... uncomfortably mobile.\n\nThings were in there with them. Moving things.\n\nDaniel and Poly moved on safely, their paths unimpeded, while Jacob caught that scent and had the wits to avoid. Connie, however? Connie came ever so close, only realizing something was amiss in her path when something moved beyond the next row of stalks and, peering carefully... she got the first proper glimpse.\n\nMuch too close. Had she simply thought the smell sweet, and harmless? But all the same, there it was: four thick, rounded, fleshy-looking petals spread between the surrounding stalks, and a dark hole at their center. From that hole squirmed an array of pink tendrils in various sizes, while a single, long, thick one rose straight up in an impression of just another carpet fiber. It hardly held up to scrutiny, but with the close-packed weave of the carpet blocking view until the last moment...\n\nConnie still avoided it, despite the fact that the 'chee would more likely have responded to invasive-looking tentacles as if they had been catnip. Maybe it was the lines of thin, slightly-flexible, but ever-so-sharp-looking teeth along the fringes of the leaves that put her off?\n\nOnly to blunder straight into the clutches of another such plant, her arm clipping the erect tendril and snared, instantly setting her a-struggle even as Daniel and Poly proceeded safely still, while Jacob too blundered into one of the lurking trap plants. This time it was the smaller tendrils, snaring his paw, clenching around it, and before he could yank himself free? Down had come the bigger one, snarling around his neck and upper body and then a yank - perhaps with a little noise, Jake was gone.\n\nOnly Connie, Daniel, and Poly remained now, and if they dared call to one another they could perhaps establish as much. Poly and Daniel even seemed to be having a fairly clear run, encountering no more of the waiting 'monsters' despite an ever-increasing fear they might at any moment. And Connie meanwhile? Connie managed to yank herself free! Even if the subsequent stumble sent her sprawling into the next row of fibers, a glimpse of another such plant and its toothed fronds all too close to her muzzle.\n\nAt least it didn't seem like they were being chased. But then... that had been the clue, hadn't it? They had not chosen the one that pursued. So maybe, so long as they were careful...\n\nDaniel and Poly were almost level in finding their way out, although unless they called to one another - unlikely perhaps, after the events before the challenge - they would have no way to know that. Connie a little behind, having been waylaid by her brief encounter with tentacles. At least she knew the scent, now: the next one was easily skirted around.\n\nAnd... then Daniel stumbled out of the grass! Right in front of the waiting, worried-looking *Minerva. Evidently the first to escape. Poly would almost have been neck-and-neck, but for the one that caught her. Perhaps it was the glimpse of the campsite ahead that made her unwary, but she too found a footpaw so entangled by small, pink tendrils threatening to climb her leg and -\n\nAnd she got free. Perhaps a panic-driven struggle, but free all the same, with only a slick-feeling ankle to show for it as she, too, escaped into the camp-space!\n\nConnie was the last out into the open. In the end, only Daniel had fully avoided any encounters, but the three of them were safe. As for their friends...\n\nA long moment, *Minerva clearly waiting to see if anyone else would stumble from the 'long grass' and out into the safety of their camp. ... Strangely, once more of a size appropriate to the group. It might almost seem it had shrunk to meet them, except a glance backward would reveal that dense carpet to once again only come up to the knees of all but their youngest.\n\n \n\n\"Daniel, Poly, Connie... congratulations on your escape,\" *Minerva said, with a little swallow as if she were trying not to think about the others, just for now.\n\n\"We will wait until the challenge resolves for your friends, before I announce the results, so...\"\n\nThe fox girl trailed off, glancing back out at the grass. What had become of the unfortunate cubs, who had failed to escape the challenge space? It was going to be at least the rest of the day before they reappeared... if not longer.\n\n\n<Please roleplay responses by replying to the appropriate ‘Reactions’ comment below! Please continue the next week to take place over the course of the two days that would normally be between Challenge and Week Summary. I realize this is irritating and confusing, but -\n\n- [icon]MystBunny[/icon]Daniel, [icon]Polymorph[/icon]Poly, and [icon]PaydayWolf[/icon]Connie made it out of the field, in that order.\n- [icon]Mizzyam[/icon]Jake, [icon]PityPlowed[/icon]Pity, and [icon]PetalLaFleur[/icon]Petal meanwhile were trapped by fleshy-plantoid tentacle traps!\n\nUnder other circumstances, I would offer to try to play this out with each of you. But for all the reasons, the best I can do is present you with options.\n 1: Consider yourself to have passed out, and judging by the revival by the campfire later,\n been consumed.\n 2: Declare what happened to you with the same assumptions.\n 3: Write it out yourself! I know at least one individual is keen to do just that.\n 4: I will not be the least bit mad if you want to contact someone to help you play out the\n scene! That includes asking other prey, or one of the predators, so long as it doesn't delay an\n elimination that has yet to complete.\n\nWhat we do with the scenes after, for those who decide to do them, will depend on how things go going forward. At the very least you're welcome to post them yourself and show them around, and I'll make sure to link to them! But ideally I will find some IC excuse to show them to those who would like the other characters to see.\n\nThose of you who were not captured, feel free to be as gratuitous writing/responding to your experiences in the field all the same! And play as if you are being forced to spend the next day or so waiting nervously to find out what has become of your friends. Again, I apologize for the temporal weirdness, but I figured this was better than forcing everyone to wait yet another week.\n\n[t]Remaining Cubs[/t]\n[icon]Polymorph[/icon] (Poly) [icon]PaydayWolf[/icon] (Connie) \n[icon]MystBunny[/icon] (Daniel) [icon]PetalLaFleur[/icon] (Petal) \n[icon]PityPlowed[/icon] (Pity) [icon]Mizzyam[/icon] (Jake)\n\n- Cub reactions Here\n- Predator reactions Here\n- Audience reactions Here\n \n\n<--- to the previous prompt | to Labyrinth of Twilight Details/Index | to the next prompt --->",

It looked like it had teeth...

And then yanked.

Pity would be very lucky if she went down both legs at once, lest the hot, clenching passage into which she was suck-dragged leave one behind and force a split that was ambitious even for the bendy little 'yote gymnast.

Still, the group could hear one another! They were too far apart to render aid, but perhaps a yip of distress before she Pity had been enclosed in that hot, pressing, writhing space and any sounds she cared to make were muffled below her friends' hearing.

Others had more luck. Jacob, Poly, and Connie did not have the same immediate encounter as Pity, and nor had Petal. Only Daniel encountered the scent and, instincts serving him very well, wisely opted not to find out what was creating that warning odor.

But the next any of them knew, Petal had given a cry, just as surprised as Pity's had been! Because for whatever reason, she, too, had found that her nose barely gave her a hint of warning before she had put her foot in something unpleasantly yielding, finding it coiled and grasped and tugged. Just as surprised, she too was hauled down before she could resist! Whatever quarrel she and Pity had had, both now shared the same fate: imprisoned in a humid, clenching hole felt unpleasantly fleshy and... uncomfortably mobile.

Things were in there with them. Moving things.

Daniel and Poly moved on safely, their paths unimpeded, while Jacob caught that scent and had the wits to avoid. Connie, however? Connie came ever so close, only realizing something was amiss in her path when something moved beyond the next row of stalks and, peering carefully... she got the first proper glimpse.

Much too close. It hardly held up to scrutiny, but with the close-packed weave of the carpet blocking view until the last moment...

Connie still avoided it, despite the fact that the 'chee would more likely have responded to invasive-looking tentacles as if they had been catnip. Maybe it was the lines of thin, slightly-flexible, but ever-so-sharp-looking teeth along the fringes of the leaves that put her off?

Only to blunder straight into the clutches of another such plant, her arm clipping the erect tendril and snared, instantly setting her a-struggle even as Daniel and Poly proceeded safely still, while Jacob too blundered into one of the lurking trap plants. This time it was the smaller tendrils, snaring his paw, clenching around it, and before he could yank himself free? Down had come the bigger one, snarling around his neck and upper body and then a yank - perhaps with a little noise, Jake was gone.

Only Connie, Daniel, and Poly remained now, and if they dared call to one another they could perhaps establish as much. Poly and Daniel even seemed to be having a fairly clear run, encountering no more of the waiting 'monsters' despite an ever-increasing fear they might at any moment. And Connie meanwhile? Connie managed to yank herself free! Even if the subsequent stumble sent her sprawling into the next row of fibers, a glimpse of another such plant and its toothed fronds all too close to her muzzle.

At least it didn't seem like they were being chased. But then... that had been the clue, hadn't it? They had not chosen the one that pursued. So maybe, so long as they were careful...

Daniel and Poly were almost level in finding their way out, although unless they called to one another - unlikely perhaps, after the events before the challenge - they would have no way to know that. Connie a little behind, having been waylaid by her brief encounter with tentacles. At least she knew the scent, now: the next one was easily skirted around.

And... then Daniel stumbled out of the grass! Right in front of the waiting, worried-looking *Minerva. Evidently the first to escape. Poly would almost have been neck-and-neck, but for the one that caught her. Perhaps it was the glimpse of the campsite ahead that made her unwary, but she too found a footpaw so entangled by small, pink tendrils threatening to climb her leg and -

And she got free. Perhaps a panic-driven struggle, but free all the same, with only a slick-feeling ankle to show for it as she, too, escaped into the camp-space!

Connie was the last out into the open. In the end, only Daniel had fully avoided any encounters, but the three of them were safe. As for their friends...

A long moment, *Minerva clearly waiting to see if anyone else would stumble from the 'long grass' and out into the safety of their camp. ... Strangely, once more of a size appropriate to the group. It might almost seem it had shrunk to meet them, except a glance backward would reveal that dense carpet to once again only come up to the knees of all but their youngest.

"Daniel, Poly, Connie... congratulations on your escape," *Minerva said, with a little swallow as if she were trying not to think about the others, just for now.

"We will wait until the challenge resolves for your friends, before I announce the results, so..."

The fox girl trailed off, glancing back out at the grass. I know at least one individual is keen to do just that.
4: I will not be the least bit mad if you want to contact someone to help you play out the
scene! That includes asking other prey, or one of the predators, so long as it doesn't delay an
elimination that has yet to complete.

What we do with the scenes after, for those who decide to do them, will depend on how things go going forward. At the very least you're welcome to post them yourself and show them around, and I'll make sure to link to them! But ideally I will find some IC excuse to show them to those who would like the other characters to see.

Those of you who were not captured, feel free to be as gratuitous writing/responding to your experiences in the field all the same!
