Delving dungeons, exploring fantastic landscapes, battling monsters, crafting, gathering, performing, chatting, maybe even role-playing or just gawking at the environments - no matter what activity they had been enjoying within the game until a moment ago, all are interrupted by the same neat pop-up message framed in ‘[i]Chains of Serenity[/i]’s typical parchment-and-ironwork theme.\n\nJust like the message said, some might have played since launch, some might have logged in for the very first time today! Some might simply have been borrowing the headset and character of a friend to see if they might enjoy the increasingly popular online world, or even have just bowed to the hype of a taster booth’s cutely-dressed representative at the mall! Or just perhaps those special company representatives sent out to find promising-looking potential 'beta testers' had simply plucked them off the street and 'volunteered' them.\n\nWhatever their reason for logging in today, controls freeze, user interfaces lock, and characters are suddenly absent from in-game environments (without the usual teleport or log-out particle effects). And around the world, thirteen young players slump, unresponsive, beneath their headsets, while a certain very rich technology conglomerate reiterates the dangers of inappropriate equipment use.\n\nNot long very long after, for the more elite members of an audience that would only grow with time as its creators milk their new stars for all they are worth, an introductory sequence begins to play. Created using the appropriated character models of the chosen players, the cubs are shown in a variety of exciting but posed and artificial-looking scenes, engaging in adventures and enjoying more casual tavern and campfire moments. Energetic, pop-y music plays over the whole, complimented by face-and-name cut-ins and everyone's introductory quotes.\n\nSome are pure text, some are recorded, others generatively voiced where the cub wasn't available to introduce themselves to the viewers come to enjoy their fates. The walls are constructed from rough-hewn blocks, haphazardly compressed but worn smooth by time. The ceiling, while quite low around the edges of the room, rises to form a half cylinder over everyone’s heads, and while there are no windows, the room is bright with the flickering light of a great many wall-mounted torches, hanging braziers, and even a few standing candelabra.\n\nThe chamber floor is empty, but up against the walls are arrayed a great many props suitable to a dungeon atmosphere. All kinds of arrayed instruments of torture, imprisonment and death are rendered in iron and wood, not to mention the wall manacles, the occasional forgotten skeleton… It really ought to be pretty intimidating! For anyone in the party who hasn’t been exposed to a generic, RPG dungeon before.\n\nOne moment… whatever they had been doing, the next that message, everything locked up - and now they were here!\n\nThe party would only have a moment to take stock, but very shortly after, a circle of light appears on the chamber floor, rising with a swirl and a flash to reveal -\n\nWell, all but the most novice of players must surely recognise *Minerva. The setting of [i]Chains of Serenity[/i] has a whole pantheon of deities, some of them will even talk to you if you pray! But *Minerva is [i]special[/i]. She might not be the greatest of the gods, but she is the one who comes out to address the playerbase during all of the events.\n\nIn a way, and after that message about the special beta test, it might have been a surprise not to be greeted by the pretty, ethereal golden fox-maiden in her complicated, colorful - if somewhat revealing - robe and floating, feather-light scarf.\n\n\"Welcome, everyone,\" *Minerva says to the assembled characters, smiling that cute, beatific smile and speaking in a pure, faintly chiming voice. \"And congratulations on being chosen to try our newest feature.\"\n\nShe casts her bright, pink eyes over the assembled characters, cheerful and a little curious, her long, fluffy white hair whisking as she moves her head.\n\n\"For those of you that I have not met before, my name is *Minerva.\" The asterisk is silent of course, as everyone remotely familiar with the goddess knows. *Minerva’s name is never rendered without its asterisk. \"I am the goddess of borders, knowledge, and guidance. While you are here, it will be my job to help you all in any way I can - as well as to explain the rules of this special new instance you have been invited to test.\"\n\nShould anyone try to start asking questions immediately, *Minerva holds up one paw, still smiling kindly but continuing to speak for the moment.\n\n\"On that note, here are some important points that I have been asked to convey:\n- First, you may already have noticed that all of your equipment and character levels have been\n obfuscated. Please do not worry, your inventories are quite safe! But in this special instance, you will\n be facing challenges that can be enjoyed by participants of any level.\n- Second, revival functions will be unavailable. If you are defeated during Labyrinth of Twilight, your\n role in the event will be over.\n- Third, as this is a beta test of a whole new aspect of [i]Chains of Serenity[/i], please do not be alarmed if\n you encounter any bugs. Simply make a note in your journal, and submit a ticket to our support team\n at the end of this event.\n- Finally, as I am sure you are all aware from the terms and conditions, a special stream is being\n broadcast as we speak to let everyone watch your adventure, live!\"\n\nWith the last point, *Minerva gestures expansively, and a large number of vaguely ‘magical-recording sphere’-looking, airborne camera objects pop into view just below the ceiling. This excited little string of announcements out of the way, the slightly-unreal-looking - and, it should be noted, [i]floating[/i] - young ‘goddess’ launches into the introductions!\n\n\"First, we have the nine year-old fox, Poly!\" *Minerva says, drifting around the not-dissimilarly-coloured little girl. \"Poly is brave and attentive, and very, very smart!\"\n\n*Minerva's elegant, but somehow still quite energetic motion through the air brings her to Trixie's shoulder next. \"And this is Trixie! Also nine, and another brave, clever, attentive little fox - but she's tough, too!\"\n\nAfter that it's Skylar's turn, but when *Minerva's curving, floating path takes her behind the brown-furred wolf, she finds herself obscured by just how tall Skylar is! So a little bump in the course that looks almost like a [i]hop[/i] so that she can float near Skylar's shoulder, too. \"And next we have Skylar! Skylar is a maned-wolf; I bet that's why she's so tall! She is about twelve years old, she's strong and athletic, and she has a really sharp eye! Oh right and she is also on a [i]special[/i] journey of her own, too!\"\n\n*Minerva certainly didn't focus on Skylar's crotch, but some of the levitating [i]cameras[/i] did, making it clear the girl was on her way from originally-boy-hood.\n\n\"Now it's Connie's turn! Connie is a thirteen year-old cheetah. She is ever so attentive, but quite tough and sporty, too!\" *Minerva lingered beside the little teen for a moment longer, adding, \"Connie is one of our special volunteers who joined [i]Chains of Serenity[/i] just to participate in this event!\"\n\nCyber probably was not quite as happy as some of the participants, but something almost seemed to be preventing *Minerva noticing for now. Instead she touched down beside him and, \"Cyber is about ten years old. He is a wolf, and another of our special volunteers. He's tough, and brave!\"\n\n*Minerva had departed again, already beside Daniel. She let her feet touch down to the stone floor, then crouched so that her head was at the same height as his for the next introduction. \"Daniel is our youngest player! He is just five years old, but he's attentive, agile, and [i]fast[/i]!\" *Minerva seemed to consider for a moment, then, with an air of absolute sincerity, \"Daniel is another of our special, volunteer new players; but do not worry, I know our staff made sure it was okay for him to be playing!\"\n\nAfter that it was Sebastian's turn! *Minerva remained grounded, pacing lightly to be by [i]his[/i] side, next. \"And Sebastian the kangaroo is eight! Don't we have a lot of young participants for our first adventure? He is clever, attentive, and very strong!\"\n\nA hop, and *Minerva was airborne again, curving her hover around behind Ash until she could float with her head at the same height as the tweenage goat girl and, \"Ash is another special new volunteer! She is twelve years old, fast, clever, and has lots of stamina - and her eyes are almost the same colour as mine!\"\n\nPetal was next, this time with *Minerva's floating drift taking her in a curve in front of the little wolf girl, at whom she smiles before once again facing one of the various recorders. \"Now Petal is nine years old, she has lots and [i]lots[/i] of stamina, her nose is sharp, and she's tough, too!\"\n\nAt the next girl in the lineup, *Minerva halted in her hovering just momentarily. Possibly she had hitched on the coyote girl's name, but she certainly didn't let that stop her performance after that! \"And Pity is 12! That is a curious name. Pity is a coyote. She is ever so agile, but she's also tough, and fast, too!\"\n\nOnce again, it was back to *Minerva's curious inability to perceive - at least for now - distress the cubs she was presenting might be showing. \"Another special volunteer! Jacob is an Alaskan hare, and he is eight years old. And gosh he's very smart [i]and[/i] he has a really sharp nose! Fast and attentive, too!\"\n\n\"And this is Josephine!\" *Minerva says, this time drifting backward to float in front of the little skunk girl. \"Josephine is a 9 year old skunk. She is ever so agile; and smart and attentive besides. Did I hear you are going to be a dancer, when you get comfortable with the rest of [i]Chains of Serenity[/i]?\"\n\nShe did linger for an answer, just for a moment, but then it was on to the last member of the line-up.\n\n\"And finally we have Cinnamon!\" *Minerva, taking a moment to linger smiling at the catgirl, wearing what was, to all intents and purposes, an armored bikini. Risque outfits were anything but rare in [i]Chains of Serenity[/i], although there were [i]just[/i] enough similarly good, [i]mostly[/i]-non-revealing pieces of gear for players to have a choice. \"Cinnamon and I have met before: she has played [i]Chains of Serenity[/i] since the very beginning. She is the oldest player here at fifteen years old! Cinnamon is very agile, and very strong!\"\n\nIntroductions complete, *Minerva touches down, takes several paces forward, and then turns to face the gathered participants.\n\n\"Now, I have one more thing I need to do. Please be patient, and I will return shortly.\"\n\nWith that, *Minerva disappears in a swirl of light much like the one in which she had arrived!\n\nWhen *Minerva comes back after several minutes, something about her is a little different; her enthusiasm a little less earnest. Still, for now, she faces the gathered cubs and, \"Thank you ever so much for waiting. Does anyone have any questions for me? If not, please take a moment to get to know one another before we proceed.\"\n\n[b][/b]\n\nAny questions aside, the lucky adventurers are left to familiarize themselves with one another, explore the chamber, or simply wait for her return. There [i]is[/i] a single door out of the chamber, made from two especially large, stone slabs, but it is presently sealed fast.\n\n[b][/b]\n[center][b][u] [/u][/b][/center]\n\n[b](Summary/Key points:[/b]\n- Participating characters were welcomed and introduced by the little golden fox goddess NPC\n *Minerva. \n- They are in a big, windowless chamber made from rough-hewn stone blocks, lit with torches and\n candles, and decorated with props appropriate to a typical RPG dungeon. The single exit will not\n open right now.\n- *Minerva has revealed the existence of innumerable virtual cameras that are streaming to a live\n audience. She has not revealed that the audience is very exclusive or ill-intentioned.\n- Being virtual, the cameras will be invisible and intangible the vast majority of the time/unless\n otherwise noted. Predators may each render one camera visible at a time, but can neither touch nor\n communicate through it.\n- Only a few in-game menus are still available and most are unresponsive. Thirteen very special players (the real criteria for their selection unknown but almost certainly playing to a much less generous agenda) all receiving the same notification. Delving dungeons, exploring fantastic landscapes, battling monsters, crafting, gathering, performing, chatting, maybe even role-playing or just gawking at the environments - no matter what activity they had been enjoying within the game until a moment ago, all are interrupted by the same neat pop-up message framed in ‘Chains of Serenity’s typical parchment-and-ironwork theme.

Just like the message said, some might have played since launch, some might have logged in for the very first time today! Some might simply have been borrowing the headset and character of a friend to see if they might enjoy the increasingly popular online world, or even have just bowed to the hype of a taster booth’s cutely-dressed representative at the mall! Or just perhaps those special company representatives sent out to find promising-looking potential 'beta testers' had simply plucked them off the street and 'volunteered' them.

Whatever their reason for logging in today, controls freeze, user interfaces lock, and characters are suddenly absent from in-game environments (without the usual teleport or log-out particle effects). And around the world, thirteen young players slump, unresponsive, beneath their headsets, while a certain very rich technology conglomerate reiterates the dangers of inappropriate equipment use.

Not long very long after, for the more elite members of an audience that would only grow with time as its creators milk their new stars for all they are worth, an introductory sequence begins to play. Created using the appropriated character models of the chosen players, the cubs are shown in a variety of exciting but posed and artificial-looking scenes, engaging in adventures and enjoying more casual tavern and campfire moments. Energetic, pop-y music plays over the whole, complimented by face-and-name cut-ins and everyone's introductory quotes.

Some are pure text, some are recorded, others generatively voiced where the cub wasn't available to introduce themselves to the viewers come to enjoy their fates.  Some even have video! -

So you other beta-testers better not underestimate me and try any pvp stuff! You boys better try and stay on my good side if you want me spending any of my allowance on Experience Potlucks!"

She stuck her tongue out at the camera, but smiled. The expensive consumables that increased the experience gains of other players were how the wealthy players got popular, so Daddy told her. She was creeped out by this full-immersion game, it was literally too real... but she also wanted to impress Daddy. She would do her best.

The group - larger than usual for a dungeon delve, too! - find themselves gathered in a large, stone chamber. The walls are constructed from rough-hewn blocks, haphazardly compressed but worn smooth by time. The ceiling, while quite low around the edges of the room, rises to form a half cylinder over everyone’s heads, and while there are no windows, the room is bright with the flickering light of a great many wall-mounted torches, hanging braziers, and even a few standing candelabra.

The chamber floor is empty, but up against the walls are arrayed a great many props suitable to a dungeon atmosphere. All kinds of arrayed instruments of torture, imprisonment and death are rendered in iron and wood, not to mention the wall manacles, the occasional forgotten skeleton… It really ought to be pretty intimidating! For anyone in the party who hasn’t been exposed to a generic, RPG dungeon before.

One moment… whatever they had been doing, the next that message, everything locked up - and now they were here!

The party would only have a moment to take stock, but very shortly after, a circle of light appears on the chamber floor, rising with a swirl and a flash to reveal -

Well, all but the most novice of players must surely recognise *Minerva. The setting of Chains of Serenity has a whole pantheon of deities, some of them will even talk to you if you pray! But *Minerva is special. She might not be the greatest of the gods, but she is the one who comes out to address the playerbase during all of the events.

In a way, and after that message about the special beta test, it might have been a surprise not to be greeted by the pretty, ethereal golden fox-maiden in her complicated, colorful - if somewhat revealing - robe and floating, feather-light scarf.

"Welcome, everyone," *Minerva says to the assembled characters, smiling that cute, beatific smile and speaking in a pure, faintly chiming voice. "And congratulations on being chosen to try our newest feature."

She casts her bright, pink eyes over the assembled characters, cheerful and a little curious, her long, fluffy white hair whisking as she moves her head.

"For those of you that I have not met before, my name is *Minerva." The asterisk is silent of course, as everyone remotely familiar with the goddess knows. *Minerva’s name is never rendered without its asterisk. "I am the goddess of borders, knowledge, and guidance. While you are here, it will be my job to help you all in any way I can - as well as to explain the rules of this special new instance you have been invited to test."

Should anyone try to start asking questions immediately, *Minerva holds up one paw, still smiling kindly but continuing to speak for the moment.

"On that note, here are some important points that I have been asked to convey:
- First, you may already have noticed that all of your equipment and character levels have been
  obfuscated. Please do not worry, your inventories are quite safe! But in this special instance, you will
  be facing challenges that can be enjoyed by participants of any level.
- Second, revival functions will be unavailable. If you are defeated during Labyrinth of Twilight, your
  role in the event will be over.
- Third, as this is a beta test of a whole new aspect of Chains of Serenity, please do not be alarmed if
  you encounter any bugs. Simply make a note in your journal, and submit a ticket to our support team
  at the end of this event.
- Finally, as I am sure you are all aware from the terms and conditions, a special stream is being
  broadcast as we speak to let everyone watch your adventure, live!"

With the last point, *Minerva gestures expansively, and a large number of vaguely ‘magical-recording sphere’-looking, airborne camera objects pop into view just below the ceiling. This excited little string of announcements out of the way, the slightly-unreal-looking - and, it should be noted, floating - young ‘goddess’ launches into the introductions!

"First, we have the nine year-old fox, Poly!" *Minerva says, drifting around the not-dissimilarly-coloured little girl. "Poly is brave and attentive, and very, very smart!"

*Minerva's elegant, but somehow still quite energetic motion through the air brings her to Trixie's shoulder next. "And this is Trixie! Also nine, and another brave, clever, attentive little fox - but she's tough, too!"

After that it's Skylar's turn, but when *Minerva's curving, floating path takes her behind the brown-furred wolf, she finds herself obscured by just how tall Skylar is! So a little bump in the course that looks almost like a hop so that she can float near Skylar's shoulder, too. "And next we have Skylar! Skylar is a maned-wolf; I bet that's why she's so tall! She is about twelve years old, she's strong and athletic, and she has a really sharp eye! Oh right and she is also on a special journey of her own, too!"

*Minerva certainly didn't focus on Skylar's crotch, but some of the levitating cameras did, making it clear the girl was on her way from originally-boy-hood.

"Now it's Connie's turn! Connie is a thirteen year-old cheetah. She is ever so attentive, but quite tough and sporty, too!" *Minerva lingered beside the little teen for a moment longer, adding, "Connie is one of our special volunteers who joined Chains of Serenity just to participate in this event!"

Cyber probably was not quite as happy as some of the participants, but something almost seemed to be preventing *Minerva noticing for now. Instead she touched down beside him and, "Cyber is about ten years old. He is a wolf, and another of our special volunteers. He's tough, and brave!"

*Minerva had departed again, already beside Daniel. She let her feet touch down to the stone floor, then crouched so that her head was at the same height as his for the next introduction. "Daniel is our youngest player! He is just five years old, but he's attentive, agile, and fast!" *Minerva seemed to consider for a moment, then, with an air of absolute sincerity, "Daniel is another of our special, volunteer new players; but do not worry, I know our staff made sure it was okay for him to be playing!"

After that it was Sebastian's turn! *Minerva remained grounded, pacing lightly to be by his side, next. "And Sebastian the kangaroo is eight! Don't we have a lot of young participants for our first adventure? He is clever, attentive, and very strong!"

A hop, and *Minerva was airborne again, curving her hover around behind Ash until she could float with her head at the same height as the tweenage goat girl and, "Ash is another special new volunteer! She is twelve years old, fast, clever, and has lots of stamina - and her eyes are almost the same colour as mine!"

Petal was next, this time with *Minerva's floating drift taking her in a curve in front of the little wolf girl, at whom she smiles before once again facing one of the various recorders. "Now Petal is nine years old, she has lots and lots of stamina, her nose is sharp, and she's tough, too!"

At the next girl in the lineup, *Minerva halted in her hovering just momentarily. Possibly she had hitched on the coyote girl's name, but she certainly didn't let that stop her performance after that! "And Pity is 12! That is a curious name. Pity is a coyote. She is ever so agile, but she's also tough, and fast, too!"

Once again, it was back to *Minerva's curious inability to perceive - at least for now - distress the cubs she was presenting might be showing. "Another special volunteer! Jacob is an Alaskan hare, and he is eight years old. And gosh he's very smart and he has a really sharp nose! Fast and attentive, too!"

"And this is Josephine!" *Minerva says, this time drifting backward to float in front of the little skunk girl. "Josephine is a 9 year old skunk. She is ever so agile; and smart and attentive besides. Did I hear you are going to be a dancer, when you get comfortable with the rest of Chains of Serenity?"

She did linger for an answer, just for a moment, but then it was on to the last member of the line-up.

"And finally we have Cinnamon!" *Minerva, taking a moment to linger smiling at the catgirl, wearing what was, to all intents and purposes, an armored bikini. Risque outfits were anything but rare in Chains of Serenity, although there were just enough similarly good, mostly-non-revealing pieces of gear for players to have a choice. "Cinnamon and I have met before: she has played Chains of Serenity since the very beginning. She is the oldest player here at fifteen years old! Cinnamon is very agile, and very strong!"

Introductions complete, *Minerva touches down, takes several paces forward, and then turns to face the gathered participants.

"Now, I have one more thing I need to do. Please be patient, and I will return shortly."

With that, *Minerva disappears in a swirl of light much like the one in which she had arrived!

When *Minerva comes back after several minutes, something about her is a little different; her enthusiasm a little less earnest. Still, for now, she faces the gathered cubs and, "Thank you ever so much for waiting. Does anyone have any questions for me? If not, please take a moment to get to know one another before we proceed."

Any questions aside, the lucky adventurers are left to familiarize themselves with one another, explore the chamber, or simply wait for her return. There is a single door out of the chamber, made from two especially large, stone slabs, but it is presently sealed fast.
