"writing": "Chapter 26: Deliverer of Sorrows\n\nDee was briefly awakened by the sound of the fishing lodge door opening and a cascade outside before the door shut. She yawned and snuggled back up with Lauren as she heard someone slump down and fall asleep. In the morning, Dee awoke to a heavy drumming sound on the roof and saw Lauren stare up at the ceiling.\n\n“What’s that noise?” Lauren asked.\n\n“I don’t know,” Dee carefully extracted herself from under the blanket and walked to one of the windows, “It kinda sounds like a shower.” She stared at the water droplets splattering on the windows.\n\n“That’s rain, came inside when it started,” Follows-Chalk stood up from where he had slept on the floor. “You never seen rain?”\n\n“Read about it as a kid, never saw it,” Dee looked away from the window, “Vault computers promised that ‘water would fall from the sky’ on good days.”\n\n“Never saw it in the New Orange Pass or around the NKR,” Lauren still stared out at the rain that pattered on the window and drummed on the roof, “Guess the war fucked up the climate too much for that to happen much anymore.”\n\n“It happens in tribal lands.” Lloyd emerged, stretching, from his half of the lodge, “Good for us though, rain makes good cover and most people don’t like being out in it.” He grinned, “but I LOVE it!”\n\n“Of course you do,” Lauren shuddered and gripped her arms, “I’m not so enthusiastic about being pelted with water over and over.”\n\n“Me either, but I’ll survive,” Follows-Chalk said, “Where do we go and when do we leave?”\n\nDee checked her Rotom-boy, “West from here, Lloyd do you know where this is?” she showed the screen to the busty Dewott-man.\n\nLloyd squinted at the map, unused to looking at digital screens, “I think I know the place, I’ll lead you there.” He turned back to where he had slept, “Dustin, I’ll pack up everything, just let me know when you’re ready.”\n\n“OK,” Dustin called from where he sat on the couch.\n\nIt didn’t take long to gather up everything useable from the lodge, including the preserved food left behind from before the war. Neither Lloyd nor Dustin wanted to touch the stuff.\n\nIt was raining hard as they left and Lauren paused inside the door even as everyone else was outside. She stuck her head out the door then pulled back inside as she felt the rain hit her head, “I’m not going out in that!”\n\nDee turned back as the others waited in the pouring rain. “We have to. Here, this will help,” She reached into her backpack and pulled out her old courier hat.\n\nLauren accepted the hat and put it on her head then stepped outside again. She shuddered at the cold and the water that struck her arms, but keeping her head dry made it bearable. “How long does the rain last?”\n\n“Sometimes it’s short and sometimes all day,” Dustin held his pregnant belly.\n\n“Could last days!” Lloyd grinned, “Let’s get moving before it stops.”\n\n“Alright,” Lauren took a deep breath and set out.\n\nDee took the Blaziken-woman’s hand and smiled at her, “I’ll be here with you.” She blinked away the rain from her vision as they walked off, following after Lloyd, Dustin and Follows-Chalk.\n\nIt seemed Lloyd was correct in that it would last all day as the party made their way around the peak that was next to the fishing lodge and headed west. The rain made the trip peaceful both from Toxic Shock and Ursa-guai attacks but also slowed them down and made it hard to tell the time of day as the clouds blocked out the sun.\n\nAround what might have been midday, Lloyd took a detour from a bridge to go fishing. The other four members of the group were forced to wait under the bridge – which didn’t provide much shelter – until Lloyd emerged with a net full of fish Pokemon including Barboach and Seaking.\n\n“I’ll cook this later, let’s go!” the busty Dewott-man grinned.\n\n“Looks tasty, Love,” Dustin gave Lloyd a kiss on the cheek then they marched up to the bridge and continued on their way.\n\nThe rest of the walk was uneventful until they reached their destination: two wood buildings similar in design built on two different levels of land.\n\n“Here we are: the old Hisui general store and Pokemon Ranger station.” Lloyd pointed to first the lower then the upper building, “If there’s pre-war tech anywhere, it’ll be in one of those.”\n\n“Can we wait out the storm in there, or at least the night,” Lauren shivered. The hat helped but she was still soaked.\n\n“Yes, we should. The Pokemon Ranger station will be better,” Dustin didn’t shiver but the pregnant Obstagoon-man was clearly winded from the long walk.\n\n“I promise I’ll have a roaring fire in there to warm us up in no time, Dusty,” Lloyd gave his mate a kiss then put an arm around him to lead him to the building with the others right behind them.\n\nAs soon as they entered, the hissing of four Gecleon greeted them. Lloyd immediately dropped the net full of fish and jumped in front of Dustin as he drew his scalchops, the aura blades igniting in time to block one’s charge, “Razor Shell!” Lloyd sliced the Gecleon’s head off then charged towards the last three. Dee was ahead of him and delivered a Force Palm to one’s face then slammed her elbow into its throat. Lauren drew her sidearm and fired into a Gecleon that had charged, putting a bullet into each of its eyes. Follows-Chalk joined the fray and struck down on the last Gecleon’s head from the side while it was focused on Lloyd, who stabbed it in the brain just to make sure it stayed down.\n\n“Gecleon meat’s not bad,” Lloyd looked around the Pokemon Ranger station, which was half office and half breakroom, complete with kitchen and a small bedroom at the back. “Anyone know how to use a stove or should I start the fireplace again?”\n\n“I can cook it,” Lauren holstered her pistol and walked to the stove, “If this thing still works.”\n\nDee was already scouring the ranger station for the supplies Joshua had sent her for. It didn’t take long which left her to sigh in dissapointment, “Nothing here, even the first aid kit is empty other than stimpacks and antidotes. I’m gonna go check the general store.”\n\n“I’ll come too,” Lloyd kept his scalchops drawn but retracted the aura blades.\n\n“Any excuse to get wet,” Dustin rolled his eyes but gave Lloyd a nuzzle and kiss, “I love you.”\n\n“I love you too,” Lloyd nuzzled and kissed him back then left while Dustin sat down on an old armchair near the fireplace.\n\n“I’ll start the fire. Here right?” Follows-Chalk pointed to the fireplace which still had a stock of firewood at the side.\n\n“Yeah,” Lauren tested the stove and was thankful it still worked with whatever fuel remained in the tanks. She found a still useable kitchen knife and set about slicing up the Gecleon to cook, “I guess we should thank the Sorrows for marking this place as ‘taboo’ or most of this stuff would have been looted already.” She found a large pan and started frying the Gecleon meat.\n\n“Lauren, what’s it like living in the civilized lands?” Follows-Chalk piled the logs in the fireplace the used some still dry old newsprint and flint he carried to start a fire\n\n“Why do you want to know?” Lauren checked the cooking Gecleon steak then looked back at the Sandshrew-man, who was drying himself by the fire.\n\n“Well, because it’s gotta be better than this: living out in the open, just getting by and the same sights over and over. I’ve heard so much about Kalos from travellers, like about how Enkayare and Nobunaga fight over Gaiva Dam.” Follows-Chalk laughed, “But how can two civilized tribes fight over something as small as a dam?”\n\nLauren laughed mirthlessly, “Ha! Small? Gaiva Dam’s bigger than some of the peaks here in Hisui. And you’d be surprised what ‘civilised tribes’ are willing to fight over.”\n\nFollows-Chalk turned to face Lauren, and let his back dry, “Now you sound like Joshua. He’s always saying that tribal life is better.”\n\nLauren stared at the cooking Gecleon steak and flipped it to help it cook evenly, “Maybe he’s right. My tribe, the Molres’ Embers, lived near an NKR city called Trovitopolis. When I was a Torchic I used to see the traders from the city all the time. I was just like you, fascinated with the ‘civilized’ world, so when I evolved into a Combusken I decided to travel to the city and enlist in their army. My dad, Helfra, wished me well but advised me against it. I didn’t listen and enlisted in the military. Now I can’t go back to the Moltres’ Embers, ever…”\n\n“What happened?” Dustin spoke, having listened in on the story as well.\n\n Lauren paused to check the steak again, “After that war against Aether, they headed east to escape being absorbed by the NKR. After my enlistment ran out, I decided to follow their trail and found out they passed through Kalos and crossed the river… into the Kogun’s territory.”\n\n“Oh…” Follows-Chalk hung his head, “So they were destroyed by Nobunaga?”\n\n“Yeah,” Lauren sighed and started on the second steak, using a mild flamethrower to help cook the top side. “Kid, listen to my advice: life in ‘civilized lands’ is no cakewalk. Yeah there’s a lot of fun things there but there’s also just as many people who will look to screw you over and take advantage of you, most of the don’t even realize you’re there when they step on you.” Lauren sniffed and blinked away a tear, “Trust me, Follows-Chalk, the city life isn’t for people like us. I’ve seen enough of it for all of us and believe me when I say: Joshua’s right, tribal living is better, at least for you and me.”\n\nFollows-Chalk felt Lauren’s sorrow, “Sounds like it. Maybe I will stay here with my family and tribe after all. Are you gonna stay in Hisui?”\n\nLauren nodded as she continued to cook, “Honestly, I think I will. Just being out here makes me miss my tribe, even if we did live near some tech ruins we still lived off the land and hunted to get by.”\n\n“What about Dee?” Dustin leaned back in his seat, hands on his pregnant belly.\n\nLauren shook her head, “I doubt she’ll stay.”\n\n“And you’re alright with that? Aren’t you together?” Follows-Chalk sounded surprised.\n\n“We’re just lovers, not mates.” Lauren turned out the second finished Gecleon steak, “And even if I did feel that way about her, I could never replace Helios in her heart.”\n\n“He was a member of your tribe too,” Dustin recalled Dee’s story from the previous night, “so he’s probably dead.”\n\n“Or enslaved, or captured. As far as I know I’m the last of the Moltre’s Embers. Maybe I’ll find some other fire type Poke-People out here and try to start again. Maybe I’ll stay with the Sorrows or the Dead Bones. Not exactly eager to live by a river, no offence Dustin.” Lauren looked back over her shoulder at the intersex Obstagoon-man.\n\n“I understand.” Dustin stayed silent for a moment before he asked, “How long till dinner?” Dustin patted his pregnant belly again.\n\nLauren gave a weak smile, “Hopefully by the time those two get back.”\n\nOoOoO\n\nDee and Lloyd didn’t bother going down the slope they’d used to get up to the ranger station, instead jumping down the short cliff to land behind the general store. As they approached the door, both reached out with their aura sense for anything inside, picking up three Pokemon inside. Both nodded to each other then Lloyd charged his aura as the energy blades spun around him then took the lead and pulled open the door.\n\nInside the shop was mostly intact but there were two Grovile and a Sceptile inside. All three Grass Lizard Pokemon turned to the intruders.\n\nOne of the medium sized Pokemon charged, a leaf blade forming on its arm as it slashed at Lloyd. Dee jumped in front of the Dewott-man and crossed her arms to block the leaf blade, which stung but barely even damaged her sleeves.\n\nLloyd recovered from being startled and jumped out from behind Dee as his scalchops extended bright green blades, “X-Scissors!” he slashed at the Grovile, which fell down dead and Lloyd turned to the Sceptile.\n\nAs the first Grovile fell, Dee jumped at the second and swung a Blaze Kick at its chest, which set it on fire, then Blaze Kicked it again to finish it off.\n\nLloyd and the Sceptile charged at each other, the Sceptile hissed and swung its leaf blades at Lloyd. “Fury Cutter!” Lloyd slashed at the Sceptile at the same time it struck him. Lloyd reeled from the strike then turned and struck it over and over, “Fury Cutter! Fury Cutter! Fury Cutter!” he jumped back as the Sceptile tried to strike again then swung one more time, “Fury Cutter!” the Sceptile finally fell and as Lloyd stood over is body, panting.\n\nDee turned to Lloyd and saw one of his breasts and stomach were bleeding, “You’re hurt. Let me help.” She held up her hands to Lloyd, who turned to face her, and she shot a Heal Pulse at the Dewott-man’s chest.\n\nLloyd watched as his injuries sealed up, then smiled, “Thanks Dee.”\n\nDee smiled, “You’re welcome. Can you help me search? I need some two-way radios, a compass, a first-aid kit that isn’t just healing chems and bags or containers to carry food a long distance.”\n\n“I’ll try to find the bags then, I don’t know Pre-War tech,” Lloyd set to searching the store’s shelves.\n\nDee checked the back storeroom and found a couple large canvas packs stacked on one of the shelves with the words ‘De-Luxe Mountain Man All-In-One Survival Kit’. Curious, she opened the zipper on one of the bags, then her face lit up in a smile. Inside there was a compass, a complete first-aid kit, a pair of two-way radios and a water canteen. “Perfect!” She picked up the heavy pack as if it were no more than a feather, then decided to grab the second after checking to see it was intact.\n\nIn the main building, Lloyd had gathered several burlap sacks that once contained food, eaten by the wild Pokemon, “Find what you need?” he asked as Dee emerged with the two survival kits.\n\nDee grinned, “Yep, more than enough. Better take it before someone else decides to smash it.”\n\n“What do the Sorrows need these things for anyway?” Lloyd looked down at the sacks in his arms.\n\n“In case they need to flee the valley, to navigate, keep contact and carry food with them on a long walk,” Dee shrugged, “I guess in case they can’t stop to forage or hunt.”\n\nLloyd tensed at those words, “To run away from their lives.” His voice had taken on a tone of mild disgust, “Let’s get back before they start to worry.”\n\nDee was a bit shocked at Lloyd’s sudden change in mood. Thankfully it didn’t last after the quick jog back to the ranger station after he dropped the snacks and smelled the grilling steaks. He gave Dustin a kiss before they all dug in to the cooked meat and fish.\n\nAfter dinner they were able to stack the remaining food in the station’s fridge, which was at least insulated. By the next morning the rain had slowed from a downpour to a drizzle so they ate the previous night’s leftovers then set off from the Ranger station and headed north to where The Sorrows lived, with Dee in the lead.\n\nIt didn’t take long to reach the narrow shallow river entrance to the Sorrows camp, which they saw was besieged by a group of six Amped Toxtricity-people from Toxic Shock Syndrome. The Toxtricity-people were shouting and firing at the narrow entrance. Three Sorrows lay dead already with the rest hiding behind the sides of the canyon.\n\nDee dropped the survival packs and pulled out Joshua’s bone club, “We need to help them!” she shouted as she ran down the slope towards the Toxic Shocks. Lloyd and Follows-Chalk ran after Dee, drawing their weapons as well as Lloyd crossed his arms and the whirl of bladed energy spun around him.\n\nLauren pulled out her assault rifle and fired over the heads of her friends into the group of Toxtricity-people. She was able to down one with several shots to the head before they turned to face them. Instead of opening fire all five remaining Toxic Shocks began violently stumming the stiff hairs on their chests which began to build up electricity around them.\n\nFollows-Chalk saw what they were doing and hurled his club as a Bonemerang at the central Toxtricity-woman, striking her first in the face then spinning back to strike her in the back of the head which caved in her skull before the Sandshrew-man caught it. It was too late as the last four Toxic Shocks unleashed their Overdrive attacks. Follows-Chalk was barely phased, Dee let out a cry of pain but didn’t slow down and Lloyd felt his whole body wracked with burning, shocking pain but powered through even as he felt like he was being boiled from within from the overload of electricity.\n\nLauren saw the massive wall of lightning advancing and was about to try and dodge when Dustin darted in front of her, crossing his arms as dark aura formed an X in front of him just in time. The four Overdrives struck the X and were deflected in to the air, their sides and the ground, saving him and Lauren from even a singe.\n\nDespite the pain, Lloyd charged as water erupted around him, “Water Jet!” he slammed into the closest Toxtricity-man then spun around, “Aqua Tail!” he struck the enemy with his tail wreathed in water then carried the momentum into a strike with the blue blade of his scalchop, “Razor Shell!” and sliced the Toxtricity-man’s head off.\n\nDee charged and whirled her bone staff into a Bone Rush once she was between two of the Toxic Shocks, then struck them down with a blow to each of their chests then each of their heads. Both tried to shoot her but Dee ducked under them and they accidentally shot each other several times before Dee spun into another Bone Rush with enough force to strike through each of their chests.\n\nFollows-Chalk flung another Bonemerang at the last Toxic Shock which they dodged and opened fire on the Sandshrew-man and hit him half a dozen time before the bone’s return trip struck them in the back of the head. They were stunned long enough for Follows-Chalk to catch his club then close the distance and swing a Bone Club at the Toxic Shock’s head hard enough to crush their skull.\n\nLloyd dropped to one knee as the dust and water settled, his whole body wracked with pain. Despite this he forced himself to stand as Dee darted over to him, “Lloyd! Hold still,” she held up her hands and fired two heal pulses at Lloyd, which eased the pain.\n\n“Love!” Dustin came charging down, carrying both survival kits which he dropped as he reached Lloyd and almost bowled his mate over as he pulled him into a hug.\n\n“I’m alright,” Lloyd hugged Dustin back as their breasts smooshed together. “I’m more worried about you and our eggs after that wave of lightning passed.”\n\n“He saved both of us with some crazy block technique,” Lauren walked down to join the group, the sacks Lloyd had dropped in her arms. She was the first to see the Sorrows come out from cover. They were indeed human – like Joshua had said – with tanned skin tones. Each wore a leather loincloth around their waist and the women also wore a top around their breasts; each also had some kind of necklace of stones and feathers from bird Pokemon around their necks and, most prominent, was a large gauntlet made from the paw and claws of an Ursa-guai strapped to their right hand.\n\nOne, a woman with a high collar of Pidgeot feathers on the back of her neck, approached the group as Dee retrieved the survival kits and they all turned to greet them. “Greetings. You are the ones from the Dead Bones?” she turned to Follows-Chalk. They could see she had elongated and more pointed canine teeth and even some pointed incisors as she spoke.\n\nFollows Chalk nodded, “Yes. Joshua sent us to bring supplies for you in case you need to run.”\n\n“Got them right here,” Dee held up the survival kits, “Can we come in please?”\n\n“Of course, follow me.” The Sorrows woman turned to lead them back into their camp.”",

She yawned and snuggled back up with Lauren as she heard someone slump down and fall asleep. In the morning, Dee awoke to a heavy drumming sound on the roof and saw Lauren stare up at the ceiling.

“What’s that noise?” Lauren asked.

“I don’t know,” Dee carefully extracted herself from under the blanket and walked to one of the windows, “It kinda sounds like a shower.” She stared at the water droplets splattering on the windows.

“That’s rain, came inside when it started,” Follows-Chalk stood up from where he had slept on the floor. “You never seen rain?”

“Read about it as a kid, never saw it,” Dee looked away from the window, “Vault computers promised that ‘water would fall from the sky’ on good days.”

“Never saw it in the New Orange Pass or around the NKR,” Lauren still stared out at the rain that pattered on the window and drummed on the roof, “Guess the war fucked up the climate too much for that to happen much anymore.”

“It happens in tribal lands.” Lloyd emerged, stretching, from his half of the lodge, “Good for us though, rain makes good cover and most people don’t like being out in it.” He grinned, “but I LOVE it!”

“Of course you do,” Lauren shuddered and gripped her arms, “I’m not so enthusiastic about being pelted with water over and over.”

“Me either, but I’ll survive,” Follows-Chalk said, “Where do we go and when do we leave?”

Dee checked her Rotom-boy, “West from here, Lloyd do you know where this is?” she showed the screen to the busty Dewott-man.

Lloyd squinted at the map, unused to looking at digital screens, “I think I know the place, I’ll lead you there.” He turned back to where he had slept, “Dustin, I’ll pack up everything, just let me know when you’re ready.”

“OK,” Dustin called from where he sat on the couch.

It didn’t take long to gather up everything useable from the lodge, including the preserved food left behind from before the war. Neither Lloyd nor Dustin wanted to touch the stuff.

It was raining hard as they left and Lauren paused inside the door even as everyone else was outside. She stuck her head out the door then pulled back inside as she felt the rain hit her head, “I’m not going out in that!”

Dee turned back as the others waited in the pouring rain. “We have to. Here, this will help,” She reached into her backpack and pulled out her old courier hat.

Lauren accepted the hat and put it on her head then stepped outside again. She shuddered at the cold and the water that struck her arms, but keeping her head dry made it bearable. “How long does the rain last?”

“Sometimes it’s short and sometimes all day,” Dustin held his pregnant belly.

“Could last days!” Lloyd grinned, “Let’s get moving before it stops.”

“Alright,” Lauren took a deep breath and set out.

Dee took the Blaziken-woman’s hand and smiled at her, “I’ll be here with you.” She blinked away the rain from her vision as they walked off, following after Lloyd, Dustin and Follows-Chalk.

It seemed Lloyd was correct in that it would last all day as the party made their way around the peak that was next to the fishing lodge and headed west. The rain made the trip peaceful both from Toxic Shock and Ursa-guai attacks but also slowed them down and made it hard to tell the time of day as the clouds blocked out the sun.

Around what might have been midday, Lloyd took a detour from a bridge to go fishing. The other four members of the group were forced to wait under the bridge – which didn’t provide much shelter – until Lloyd emerged with a net full of fish Pokemon including Barboach and Seaking.

“I’ll cook this later, let’s go!” the busty Dewott-man grinned.

“Looks tasty, Love,” Dustin gave Lloyd a kiss on the cheek then they marched up to the bridge and continued on their way.

The rest of the walk was uneventful until they reached their destination: two wood buildings similar in design built on two different levels of land.

“Here we are: the old Hisui general store and Pokemon Ranger station.” Lloyd pointed to first the lower then the upper building, “If there’s pre-war tech anywhere, it’ll be in one of those.”

“Can we wait out the storm in there, or at least the night,” Lauren shivered. The hat helped but she was still soaked.

“Yes, we should. The Pokemon Ranger station will be better,” Dustin didn’t shiver but the pregnant Obstagoon-man was clearly winded from the long walk.

“I promise I’ll have a roaring fire in there to warm us up in no time, Dusty,” Lloyd gave his mate a kiss then put an arm around him to lead him to the building with the others right behind them.

As soon as they entered, the hissing of four Gecleon greeted them. Follows-Chalk joined the fray and struck down on the last Gecleon’s head from the side while it was focused on Lloyd, who stabbed it in the brain just to make sure it stayed down.

“Gecleon meat’s not bad,” Lloyd looked around the Pokemon Ranger station, which was half office and half breakroom, complete with kitchen and a small bedroom at the back. “Anyone know how to use a stove or should I start the fireplace again?”

“I can cook it,” Lauren holstered her pistol and walked to the stove, “If this thing still works.”

Dee was already scouring the ranger station for the supplies Joshua had sent her for. It didn’t take long which left her to sigh in dissapointment, “Nothing here, even the first aid kit is empty other than stimpacks and antidotes. I’m gonna go check the general store.”

“I’ll come too,” Lloyd kept his scalchops drawn but retracted the aura blades.

“Any excuse to get wet,” Dustin rolled his eyes but gave Lloyd a nuzzle and kiss, “I love you.”

“I love you too,” Lloyd nuzzled and kissed him back then left while Dustin sat down on an old armchair near the fireplace.

“I’ll start the fire. Here right?” Follows-Chalk pointed to the fireplace which still had a stock of firewood at the side.

“Yeah,” Lauren tested the stove and was thankful it still worked with whatever fuel remained in the tanks. She found a still useable kitchen knife and set about slicing up the Gecleon to cook, “I guess we should thank the Sorrows for marking this place as ‘taboo’ or most of this stuff would have been looted already.” She found a large pan and started frying the Gecleon meat.

“Lauren, what’s it like living in the civilized lands?” Follows-Chalk piled the logs in the fireplace the used some still dry old newsprint and flint he carried to start a fire

“Why do you want to know?” Lauren checked the cooking Gecleon steak then looked back at the Sandshrew-man, who was drying himself by the fire.

“Well, because it’s gotta be better than this: living out in the open, just getting by and the same sights over and over. I’ve heard so much about Kalos from travellers, like about how Enkayare and Nobunaga fight over Gaiva Dam.” Follows-Chalk laughed, “But how can two civilized tribes fight over something as small as a dam?”

Lauren laughed mirthlessly, “Ha! Small? Gaiva Dam’s bigger than some of the peaks here in Hisui. And you’d be surprised what ‘civilised tribes’ are willing to fight over.”

Follows-Chalk turned to face Lauren, and let his back dry, “Now you sound like Joshua. He’s always saying that tribal life is better.”

Lauren stared at the cooking Gecleon steak and flipped it to help it cook evenly, “Maybe he’s right. Now I can’t go back to the Moltres’ Embers, ever…”

“What happened?” Dustin spoke, having listened in on the story as well.

Lauren paused to check the steak again, “After that war against Aether, they headed east to escape being absorbed by the NKR. After my enlistment ran out, I decided to follow their trail and found out they passed through Kalos and crossed the river… into the Kogun’s territory.”

“Oh…” Follows-Chalk hung his head, “So they were destroyed by Nobunaga?”

“Yeah,” Lauren sighed and started on the second steak, using a mild flamethrower to help cook the top side. I’ve seen enough of it for all of us and believe me when I say: Joshua’s right, tribal living is better, at least for you and me.”

Follows-Chalk felt Lauren’s sorrow, “Sounds like it. Maybe I will stay here with my family and tribe after all. Are you gonna stay in Hisui?”

Lauren nodded as she continued to cook, “Honestly, I think I will. Just being out here makes me miss my tribe, even if we did live near some tech ruins we still lived off the land and hunted to get by.”

“What about Dee?” Dustin leaned back in his seat, hands on his pregnant belly.

Lauren shook her head, “I doubt she’ll stay.”

“And you’re alright with that? Aren’t you together?” Follows-Chalk sounded surprised.

“We’re just lovers, not mates.” Lauren turned out the second finished Gecleon steak, “And even if I did feel that way about her, I could never replace Helios in her heart.”

“He was a member of your tribe too,” Dustin recalled Dee’s story from the previous night, “so he’s probably dead.”

“Or enslaved, or captured. As far as I know I’m the last of the Moltre’s Embers. Maybe I’ll find some other fire type Poke-People out here and try to start again. Maybe I’ll stay with the Sorrows or the Dead Bones. Not exactly eager to live by a river, no offence Dustin.” Lauren looked back over her shoulder at the intersex Obstagoon-man.

“I understand.” Dustin stayed silent for a moment before he asked, “How long till dinner?” Dustin patted his pregnant belly again.

Lauren gave a weak smile, “Hopefully by the time those two get back.”

OoOoO

Dee and Lloyd didn’t bother going down the slope they’d used to get up to the ranger station, instead jumping down the short cliff to land behind the general store. As they approached the door, both reached out with their aura sense for anything inside, picking up three Pokemon inside. Both nodded to each other then Lloyd charged his aura as the energy blades spun around him then took the lead and pulled open the door.

Inside the shop was mostly intact but there were two Grovile and a Sceptile inside. All three Grass Lizard Pokemon turned to the intruders.

One of the medium sized Pokemon charged, a leaf blade forming on its arm as it slashed at Lloyd. Dee jumped in front of the Dewott-man and crossed her arms to block the leaf blade, which stung but barely even damaged her sleeves.

Lloyd recovered from being startled and jumped out from behind Dee as his scalchops extended bright green blades, “X-Scissors!” he slashed at the Grovile, which fell down dead and Lloyd turned to the Sceptile.

As the first Grovile fell, Dee jumped at the second and swung a Blaze Kick at its chest, which set it on fire, then Blaze Kicked it again to finish it off.

Lloyd and the Sceptile charged at each other, the Sceptile hissed and swung its leaf blades at Lloyd. “Fury Cutter!” Lloyd slashed at the Sceptile at the same time it struck him. Lloyd reeled from the strike then turned and struck it over and over, “Fury Cutter! Fury Cutter! Fury Cutter!” he jumped back as the Sceptile tried to strike again then swung one more time, “Fury Cutter!” the Sceptile finally fell and as Lloyd stood over is body, panting.

Dee turned to Lloyd and saw one of his breasts and stomach were bleeding, “You’re hurt. Let me help.” She held up her hands to Lloyd, who turned to face her, and she shot a Heal Pulse at the Dewott-man’s chest.

Lloyd watched as his injuries sealed up, then smiled, “Thanks Dee.”

Dee smiled, “You’re welcome. Can you help me search? I need some two-way radios, a compass, a first-aid kit that isn’t just healing chems and bags or containers to carry food a long distance.”

“I’ll try to find the bags then, I don’t know Pre-War tech,” Lloyd set to searching the store’s shelves.

Dee checked the back storeroom and found a couple large canvas packs stacked on one of the shelves with the words ‘De-Luxe Mountain Man All-In-One Survival Kit’. Curious, she opened the zipper on one of the bags, then her face lit up in a smile. Inside there was a compass, a complete first-aid kit, a pair of two-way radios and a water canteen. “Perfect!” She picked up the heavy pack as if it were no more than a feather, then decided to grab the second after checking to see it was intact.

In the main building, Lloyd had gathered several burlap sacks that once contained food, eaten by the wild Pokemon, “Find what you need?” he asked as Dee emerged with the two survival kits.

Dee grinned, “Yep, more than enough. Better take it before someone else decides to smash it.”

“What do the Sorrows need these things for anyway?” Lloyd looked down at the sacks in his arms.

“In case they need to flee the valley, to navigate, keep contact and carry food with them on a long walk,” Dee shrugged, “I guess in case they can’t stop to forage or hunt.”

Lloyd tensed at those words, “To run away from their lives.” His voice had taken on a tone of mild disgust, “Let’s get back before they start to worry.”

Dee was a bit shocked at Lloyd’s sudden change in mood. Thankfully it didn’t last after the quick jog back to the ranger station after he dropped the snacks and smelled the grilling steaks.
