The door was softly cracked open, and a figure, seemingly male, slowly slid into the room of the aging lab. Old, creaky floorboards supported various machines and computers, designed for intensive research of pokemon. These complex technologies were mainly operated by the assistants that worked under the professor. Professor Rowan himself was not technologically illiterate, he just preferred to get his hands dirty. Due to the hustle and bustle of the managing various project, this gave the opportunity for…antics to put it lightly. Dressed in what could honestly be described only as a spacesuit sans helmet, it would be extremely obvious to anyone nearby that the intruder was part of some sort of organization. However, no one knew what that organization is and what their goal was. Team Galactic had not been ready to put their main plan in action, but the time was nearly perfect. The the lowly grunt approached the computer. His task was simple, click the flash drive into the computer connected to the professor’s PC, transfer the file, and leave without being detected. The entrance was simple enough: no one in Sandgem really locked their doors. Why bother? There was so little significant about the city the only ones that visited were occasional researchers, sometimes kids to get starters, and that is it. Quickly hacking into the computer, the PC buzzed to life. Of course, Rowan’s computer would not be protected as well, he does not really like using it. A grin flashed on the face of the Team Galactic Grunt, but it quickly turned back to a neutral expression. No time to waste, the danger had not passed. Flash drive entered into the port and its data was made available almost immediately. Everything was going without a hitch. One click and drag…and the code runs, three messages popping up on the screen. Error: File not applicable to P387.exe Error: File not applicable to P390.exe File successfully added to P393.exe “Shit….” The man mutters under his breath. There was small bug in the code. Not too worry, he just needed a few minutes to quickly fix a couple loops and it would be fine. The key word ended up being “would” because the tapping of footsteps could be heard nearby, approaching the door. What would a researcher need to do at this hour, during the dead of night? The footsteps slowly increased in volume. In a moment of panic, the grunt stops patching the code and quickly runs it. Within the PC, malicious little nanomachines made the attempt to infest the pokemon storage box. Every time, the bots were unable to gain a foothold, except in file P393.exe. On that occasion, the application was successful. The program was designed to close out as soon as a successful transfer of information was complete, and the moment it did, the intruder yanked the flash drive out of the computer and dove behind a machine. One second passes. Two. Three. The door opens, and a young woman, maybe about 13, turned on the lights and walked in. She poked her head around a bit halfheartedly before exiting. A close call. The grunt went to retrieve the data stick, but it had shattered in the process of taking cover. The boss would punish his failure severely, but nothing else could be done. Working slowly towards the door, in case that girl was still nearby, the grunt weaved between machines and tables, before ducking out of the room and quickly exiting the building. He hightailed it out of the building and into the treeline, before getting down on one knee to take a breath. Team Galactic was not an organization used to intense physical legwork, preferring to be more covert and tactical in their dealings. While impressive technologies were developed for their deeds, the rank and file of Team Galactic were not exactly specimens of peak physical performance (while still being healthy). The grunt immediately started clicking buttons on the watchlike communicator on his wrist. A similar looking figure popped up on the screen. It spoke. “Did you complete the mission?” The grunt in the woods paused. All he could do is tell the truth. “I started the process of activation, and the code had loops that were not caught by our computers division. I attempted to patch the loops but was nearly detected. Only one of the three files was able to be targeted successfully. During my escape, the flash drive was destroyed.” The figure on the screen kept a chilly expression on her face as she spoke. “Admins Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn will not be pleased to hear of your failure. Be thankful you had the sense to destroy the data before leaving. Perhaps finding the errors in the code will be enough to keep you from being…terminated.” She stated in a flat, neutral tone. “You said one file was successfully corrupted. Please state which one.” Once she finished her request, the grunt spoke, “P393.exe was successfully infested with the nanoweapon.” The woman on screen nodded, recording notes and running quick calculations on a separate computer. An alert flashed on her screen, a message. The sender was just titled “C”. The message contained four words: Failure is not tolerated Their leader, apparently watching, decided the grunt’s fate. His failure to fix the code and finish the job had apparently sealed his fate. “Our leaders have made a decision.” She stated, and for the first time a twinge of emotion flashed across her face, enough for a full smile. This gave the grunt a bad feeling. He immediately ended the call and tried to run deeper into the wood. It would not work. Soon he would be found and slaughtered for his blunder. Back in the headquarters, the lady remained staring at the screen, silent. After a moment, she simply spoke “The gods of space, time and darkness welcome you home.” Then she stood up from her desk and walked out of the sterile looking room. ------------- Welcome to Martyr, a Pokemon Pearl fanfiction based around a nuzlocke I will be playing. This story will follow me as I attempt to beat the 8 gyms, fight team galactic, become champion, and eventually defeat giratina. Here are the rules: 1. If a pokemon faints, it is considered dead. It cannot be revived in any way. It must be released or stored in the PC permanently. 2. If the starter (Piplup and its evolution line) dies, the run ends. This is game over. 3. Only one pokemon per area can be captured. If the pokemon faints during the capture attempt, I lose an opportunity to catch anything. a. An area is defined by a section of a route that pokemon can be captured on. If a route has grass and water, two pokemon can potentially be caught per route. Each each floor of Mount Coronet counts as a new area. b. If a wild pokemon is fainted due to it using explosion or uses a move such as roar, the encounter is not counted. If any deaths occurred, they do count. 4. If a pokemon is encountered on the capture attempt and is of the same evolutionary line as a previously caught pokemon, it cannot be captured, and the encounter is not counted. 5. Any shiny pokemon are allowed to be caught, regardless of the rules. 6. Any legendaries encountered in battle must be slain. 7. All pokemon must be nicknamed in order to help foster the forming of attachment to them. Keep in mind that this is my first attempt at writing anything, so I will take advice. I will not tolerate anyone being rude, even if it’s “constructive criticism”. Please know that updates may take a while due to college and work, plus I need to actually play and write for this. If this turns you off from this project, my apologies in advance. Now then, let’s get started, and I hope you enjoy.
