Under the Tentacles


Deep below the sea surface of the planet Mobius (Sea Zone) there was a city. A city made of coral and hard kelp. A city named Aquaria and known as the Sunken Wonder of the World. It was predominantly inhabited by the mermaid kind, and the most prevalent variant of them were the merhogs, half fish and half hedgehogs whose ability with swimming was unrivaled. And two merhogs are the protagonists of this story, two young adult merhogs who were best friends and liked to hang out and swim together as they explored the wonders of Aquaria. The oldest, by a month, was Sonic, a blue merhog with a free attitude and undying curiosity. His slim, slightly muscular upper body and his strong tail, which had a red fin with a white stripe, showed his incredible swimming prowess, he was actually capable of swimming faster than sound and that had got him in trouble in the city since doing so would break windows and cause other types of damage, but that wouldn’t stop him from sating his thirst for adrenaline. His friend, appropriately named Silver thanks to his fur color, was the youngest, more skinny merhog and not as fast as him but he compensated with his incredible skills in using magic, especially psychokinesis and hydrokinesis. “You know what we should do? We should totally go to the sunken ship!” he said, smirking.

Sonic smiled and swam forward, with his silvery friend right behind him, as they got out of the boundaries of the city and into the deep sea. As he did, Sonic grinned and accelerated, causing a sonic boom underwater and leaving Silver behind to swim in a lot of bubbles.
“Gh… I hate when he does that…” Silver grunted as he tried to keep up, but he was nowhere near as fast as him. When he finally arrived at the coral reef, he could catch up with Sonic, but only because he was waiting for him, with his arms folded.
“Geez, dude, what took you?” he asked huffing.

“Remind me why we hang together again…” said Sonic as he swam forward.
“Don’t be a prick and let’s get this over with…” Silver sighed and followed him, not realizing that they were being followed too by a large figure. They ventured inside the reef until they found the ship. It was a huge wooden vessel that sank when there still was life out of the sea, back to when land dwellers and sea dwellers still fought for supremacy. This was the last reminder of the victory sea dwellers scored all those years ago.
“Man, it’s huge!” said Sonic smiling.
“And creepy… Ok, we saw it. Can we go back now?” asked Silver, shivering a bit and feeling like someone, or something, was watching them.
“Ugh, fine, miss party pooper…” Sonic huffed and started to swim back when suddenly a huge great white shark blocked the only way out. Silver yelped and hid behind Sonic, while the blue merhog folded his arms and smirked.




“Oh sup Brutus… Still following innocent merhogs like a creep to try and eat them?” asked Sonic, grinning. The shark growled, showing his massive teeth, as it prepared to attack them.
Sonic cracked his knuckles and got ready to fight the shark, he was used to doing so since that fish would always try to snack on them, but he noticed that the shark seemed diffident in getting closer. 
“What’s the matter, Brutus? Scared of the ship?” asked Sonic as he had another idea “Then you won’t like this…” he said grinning and dashing inside the ship with Silver, the ivory merhog’s yelp was the last thing the shark heard before the two vanished inside. Brutus groaned and still swam around but he didn’t want to go inside. He really was terrified of that place! After a while, with a grunt, he left to find some more cooperative prey. Meanwhile, Sonic and Silver swam inside the belly of the vessel.
“Looks like he didn’t follow us… Good. Let’s stay here for a bit until he leaves for good.” said Sonic, looking around.
“Gh… I don’t like this… I don’t like this one bit…” Silver stuttered, looking around the dark and creepy space they were in, he had goosebumps and was ready to jump at the slightest movement outside of his eye view.
“Oh c’mon, buddy, where’s your sense of adventure? We get to explore a place that adults usually are too scared to check! How cool is that?” asked Sonic smirking.

The two merhogs stayed inside the ship for a few minutes, exploring its insides while waiting for the predator to leave, ignoring that it had already left. During their time there their eyes adjusted to the dark and now they could at least see where they were going. Luckily Silver had a good memory so they wouldn’t get lost in the labyrinthic insides of the ship.
“See? This place isn't so bad, right? Just an old ship” said Sonic, who had never let go of Silver’s hand during their time there.
“I… I have to admit it, Sonic: You were right. This place is not threatening at all.” said Silver smiling as for once he was happy to be wrong.

“Oh, I wouldn’t know about that…” a deep, creepy voice made both merhogs stop “Legends always hide a hint of truth…” said the voice, it clearly belonged to a male. Sonic looked around, while Silver never looked so close to pissing himself out of fear. 
(Why do I have to be right all the time?!) he whined in his hand while he stood close to Sonic, who still tried to find the emitter of the deep voice.
“I must say, it is nice to receive visits… After all these centuries, someone had the stomach to come inside my ship… My domain…” said the voice, it was echoey inside so it wasn’t easy to pinpoint where it came from. Suddenly, they saw some movement in front of them. Sonic squinted his eyes to see what it saw and gasped: it was a tentacle! A huge, thick tentacle waved in front of them. Silver gulped as the last thing he wanted was to be catched by a hungry octopus, then the tentacle waved at them like a hand telling them to follow it and vanished in the dark.




“Did… that thing tell us to follow it?” asked Sonic, raising a brow.

“You’re… a Cecaelia?” asked Sonic, backing up until he realized that the door had been locked by one of the tentacles, man those things were everywhere in the small room.
“I am, little merhog… Welcome to my sunken domain… My name is Shadow, and you are…?” he asked with a false gentle tone.
“About to kick your ass if you don’t tell me where’s my friend…” said Sonic, trying to sound strong and in control, when he wasn’t in control at all.
