So I’m stuck with baby books—big pictures, two-syllable words, you know, real intellectual stuff. Crystal says they’re ‘good for my focus.’ I say they’re good for making me die of secondhand embarrassment.
Then there’s those giant block sets—I build castles, mostly so I have somewhere to sit and sulk. And big foam floor puzzles too. I can actually finish those pretty fast...
Felix: This is my favorite toy. I already have it—it’s right here! It’s just a stacking toy, yeah? Just one pole, and all these colorful squishy rings that go from big to tiny. But it’s not just a stacking toy! No-no-no—this is actually a baby-safe version of the Towers of Hanoi puzzle.
Okay, okay—it only has one pole, but you can just imagine the other two. I mean, mentally simulate them, right? Like in your brain! Which is part of the fun because now you’re playing a recursive logic game inside your head while you’re sitting there in soggy diaper and onesie, with something that technically squeaks if you bite it. It’s incredible.
So here’s how it works: You’ve got three imaginary poles. And your goal is to move all the rings—like, from the pole you start on to one of the others—but you can only move one ring at a time, and you can’t ever put a bigger ring on a smaller one. That rule is sacred. Break it and you fail the binary gods. I mean—not really, but like… kinda.
AND THEN!—okay, the really cool part is how the solution is this perfect recursive pattern. If you have 'n' rings, it takes 2ⁿ - 1 moves to solve it in the minimum steps. Like, three rings takes 7 moves, four rings takes 15, and it keeps doubling. And you can actually track your moves as binary numbers. It’s a real thing! Every time you move a ring, it’s like a bit flipping—000 to 001 to 010 to 011—like that! You're literally watching a binary counter roll over in physical space!
So every time I sit down with it, I don’t just play—I run the whole algorithm in my head while I’m moving the little rings back and forth on the one real pole and imagining the rest.
…Anyway yeah. It’s just a stacking toy. But it’s my favorite.

Crystal: Mhm... Very impressive, our little genius. But don’t you think that kind of high-level brain work is a way too advanced for a baby kitten which still needs help with his snaps and bedtime binkie?
Felix: Th-that’s not fair! The only reason I need help with snaps is ‘cause you keep me in these dumb mittens most of time! You try undoing anything in these glorified plush oven mitts!
Crystal: Well, they do keep your wandering little paws out of trouble. And you look so cute when you get all frustrated trying to boop buttons with 'em.
Felix: I have an actual degree in this! Like—formally! Programming, logic systems, recursive structures—it’s literally what I studied. I graduated! With honors!!
Crystal: And now you’re a cute little bedwetter, sitting in playpen and solving toddler puzzles on the floor. My-my, how far you’ve come. *Giggles*
