Silk had put a TON of effort into this. The ropework was extravagant and implemented with an artist’s attention to detail. She had not only heard his request; she had met it with cartoonish zeal and overkill bordering on absurdity. He was totally immobilized in a complex mesh of interlocking ropes, tying him down to the bed. Every slight movement of his muscles confirmed the tautness and pressure coming at him from every angle. It was like a weighted blanket times a thousand. How much time had it taken her to set this up? She must have used like a kilometer of rope, she must have tied like 300 knots. And each one of those knots said without words:[i] It’s okay. I’ve got you. I’m holding you. You don’t have to make any decisions right now. You don’t have to say anything. You can rest. You can turn off your anxiety. There’s no “messing up” right now because there are no choices. Just exist for a moment. \n[/i]\nAnd the best part? Emerald didn’t even have to choose how long this moment lasted. He wriggled a bit. He pulled at the ropes around his wrists and his ankles, testing their tautness, confirming the fact that he was totally stuck, totally immobilized. Yes, Silk knew what she was doing. He wasn’t going anywhere in a hurry. And judging by the way that Silk leaned back into her chair, stirred her tea, and took another slow sip? It didn’t look like she was going anywhere in a hurry either. He was going to be here for a LONG time. And . . . was that Moby Dick at the foot of the bed? Oh good heavens.
