"writing": "Chapter 25: Brothers.\n\nArguing with Jorge proves to be pointless as Rachel finds out the hard way. Boys will fight, brothers more so, but Jorge knows better. As strong as Fernando maybe be, as equal in fighting skills Fernando have to Jorge, Fernando has this one weakness that seems to strike him down without warning or notice. Grandma enters the house with a full shopping cart, hearing Rachel’s yelling upstairs.\n\nGrandma goes up the stairs quickly, entering Fernando and Rachel’s room. There she finds Jorge being his adamant self, with Rachel on he floor, holding Fernando in her arms.\n\n“What Happened Here?!”, Grandma shouts at the both of them in Spanish.\n\nJorge refuses to answer, though Grandma can see his bloodied lip. Rachel begins to cry.\n\n“Sit Down!”, Grandma demands Jorge, pointing to the computer chair at Fernando’s computer desk. He silently complies.\n\nGrandma goes over to Rachel and Fernando, pushing the table out of the way for her to make room. “Let him go, girl.”, Grandma tells her. Rachel reluctantly complies. Grandma examines Fernando, checking his vital signs, injuries and broken bones. At least he was breathing, though shallow it may be, and his heart still beating with no gross or minor injuries that she could find which might have caused this. Checking his nose for airflow, she finds semi congealed blood instead.\n\n“Did you hit him?!!”, Grandma barks at Jorge.\n\n“No!”, Jorge barks back. “He Hit Me!”\n\n“Mind Your Manner, Boy! Why Is His Nose Bloody?”, Grandma shouts at him.\n\n“I Don’t Know!”, Jorge yells.\n\n“You saw him hit him?”, Grandma turns to Rachel.\n\n“No…”, Rachel answers.\n\n“Then what happened?”, Grandma asks.\n\n“They were arguing, and they started pushing each other, and then Fernando hit him, then he went down.”, Rachel tries to explain.\n\n“He pushed me first.”, Jorge adds.\n\n“You should be protecting your brother, not fighting him!”, Grandma yells at him.\n\n“He Hit Me!”, Jorge yells back.\n\n“What are you doing here anyways?”, Grandma scowls a him.\n\nRachel looks at him and shakes her head. Jorge does not answer, at least not for now.\n\n“You’re hiding something.”, Grandma tells him.\n\n“Rachel Rodriguez and her sister Francis are coming over this weekend. He said that he was going someplace else and that you were having Rachel go with him to make sure nothing was going to happen. I called him a sissy because you have Rachel protecting him and he hit me and passed out before I could hit him back.”, Jorge keeps from yelling at Grandma.\n\n“The Rodriguez girls are coming over this Saturday? No, they cant come. As nice as they are, they can not be over a hundred mile away from home. Who is going to take care off them?”, Grandma says. “Now… Fernando is no sissy. Far from it. He knows that getting angry could burst a blood vessel in his brain that can kill him. And here you are making him angry! You Want Your Brother Dead?!!”, Grandma starts to go off on him. She slowly gets up and steps away from Fernando. “Pick him up!”\n\n“What?”, Jorge asks in shock and confusion.\n\n“I said pick up your brother and put him in his bed!”, Grandma tells him sternly. “I don’t care if you don’t remember, but when you were a baby, you used to cry a lot. And Fernando was there to pick you up out of your crib and carry you to your mother or I to take care of you. He used to watch you over your crib while you slept to make you that you did sleep peacefully. He used to love you as an older brother should without asking for anything in return. Remember that he used to give you his toys because you wanted them. He gave you everything to make you happy. I don’t know what or why, nor do I want to know what made you hate him, but he loves you as a brother should.”\n\n“He has a damn funny way of showing it.”, Jorge says to himself.\n\n“What was that?!!”, Grandma steps to his direction. “I told you to pick him up and out him in his bed… so do it!”\n\nJorge stands his ground.\n\n“Let me get the belt so I can light up your tail!”, Grandma says, taking a couple of steps to the door. Jorge hurries to Fernando’s side as she reaches the door knob, and was surprised as to how light his older brother was as he picked him up. Jorge places him on the bed and steps away. Grandma gives him a stern look. Rachel walks over to the bed, taking off his glasses and putting a pillow under Fernando’s head, then reaches to gather the blanket to cover him with.\n\n“Let him do that.”, Grandma tells her. Rachel drops the blanket as to cover him as much as possible, letting Jorge to do as little as possible. He takes the blanket and straightens it out, pulling it over Fernando, and lets it hang over the edge. Grandma checks on his work, finding his work barely acceptable, with a 99 percent grade being barely passing. She turns to him, “You are to stay in your room until I call you for dinner.”\n\nJorge leaves the room without arguing. Grandma examines Fernando one more time before going to the kitchen. She stops at the door, turning to Rachel. “If he does not wake up in an hour, I’m going to have to take him the hospital.”, Grandma tells her.\n\n“Maybe we should call Dr. Leary?”, Rachel asks.\n\n“We don’t have her number. Besides what can she do what I already did without those fancy X-ray machines to see what is going on his head?”, Grandma answers.\n\nRachel reaches to the night stand where the Dr. Leary’s cards were, trading the glasses with one of the cards, handing it to Grandma. “Where you got this from?”, Grandma asks.\n\n“Dr. Leary came by in the morning and gave us some papers for you to sign for Saturday’s trip.”, Rachel answers. “She gave us the card too.”\n\n“I see. Where are the papers?”, Grandma replies.\n\n“On the kitchen counter, somewhere.”, Rachel answers.\n\n“Come with me. I’ll call her but you have to give her the details of what happened.”, Grandma tells her. Grandma opens the door and steps out into the hall. She notices that Rachel was not followed her out the door. “Rachel, get over here!”, Grandma calls for her.\n\nRachel runs out of the room though she wishes she didn’t had go. Grandma heads down the stairs, Rachel follows her down to the living room. Grandma picks up the phone on the end table by one of the chairs. Looking at the card, she dials the second number, which is usually a personal number and not an office number. In this case its was Dr. Leary’s personal cellphone.\n\nThe phone rings several times before Dr. Leary answers it.\n\n“Hello?”, Dr. Leary asks.\n\n“Its about time you answered.”, Grandma went on in Spanish. “What took you so long to answer?”\n\n“Fernando’s grandmother?”, Dr. Leary asks in Spanish.\n\n“Who else would it be.”, Grandma went on.\n\n“Is everything alright?”, Dr. Leary asks.\n\n“No. Why else would I be calling? Not to invite you to tea and crumpets”, Grandma explains.\n\n“What happened?”, Dr. Leary asks, trying to be patient with Grandma, knowing too well how she can be.\n\n“Fernando and Jorge had a fist fight, and from what Rachel and Jorge are saying, Fernando hit Jorge to bloody his lip and then passed out. I found blood in his nose but no where else. He seems to have no other injury than that.”, Grandma explains to her.\n\nDr. Leary sighs, “I’ll be right over in a minute.”\n\n“Need to speak to Rachel? I have her right here next to me.”, Grandma asks and then stated.\n\n“Its OK. Tell her to keep an eye on Fernando and she can tell me everything when I get there.”, Dr. Leary says.\n\n“Thank you.”, Grandma says and then hangs up the phone. “Rachel, go up and keep an eye on Fernando until Dr. Leary arrives.”\n\nRachel does as she was told, going up the stairs quietly and into the room. She sits down next to him and then lays down to be with him, putting an arm around him and her head on his chest to listen to his beating heart.\n\nIt did not take too long for Dr. Leary to arrive, the downstairs door slamming close alerted Rachel to sit up from laying down with her brother. Within the next few seconds they enter the room. Grandma signals for Rachel to get out of the bed. She complies sitting on his computer chair which has the best view of what was going on.\n\nDr. Leary sits down next to him, examining him with the gear she has in her portable kit. Simple tests and examinations says nothing that she does not already know. Taking him to the hospital would be pointless if it becomes a repeat of what happened the week before. It was a risk she has to outweigh: Hospital or Homecare.\n\n“Ammonia.”, Dr. Leary says to her self.\n\n“Ammonia?”, Grandma asks.\n\n“Maybe the smell of Ammonia would shock him into consciousness.”, Dr. Leary explains.\n\n“Like smelling salts.”, Grandma says.\n\n“Uhm… they don’t make smelling salts anymore.”, Dr. Leary replies.\n\n“Just because they don’t make it does not mean that I still have it. Hold on while I get my medical kit.”, Grandma says. As she started to walk out the room, the door bell rings. “Rachel, go see who is that and do not let them in!”\n\nRachel nods before getting out to the computer chair and walks down the stairs as Grandma goes into her room. She opens the downstairs door, limiting its travel with her foot. It was Lucy.\n\n“What do you want now?!!”, Rachel almost yells at her.\n\n“Uhm… nothing from you. Is Fernando in?”, Lucy asks.\n\n“He’s sleeping right now.”, Rachel tell her.\n\n“Sleeping? Its not even 6o’clock yet!”, Lucy says.\n\n“He has a bad headache. What ever it is it you want can wait until next year.”, Rachel tells her.\n\n“I know you don’t like me, most sisters sees a new girl as a threat to their brother’s attention.”, Lucy says.\n\n“You’re not listening. He is not feeling well.”, Rachel tells her.\n\n“We will see about that.”, Lucy says, pushing Rachel aside. She walks past her and head to the stairs. Rachel runs past her, blocking the stairs from her to get on.\n\n“What is going on downstairs!”, Grandma looks down from the top of the stairs.\n\n“I told her not to come in but she went past me!”, Rachel says. Dr. Leary walks out of the room, standing behind Grandma.\n\n“Lucy, go home.”, Dr. Leary tells her.\n\n“Can I see Fernando?”, Lucy asks.\n\n“No.”, Dr. Leary tells her sternly. “Now go home.”\n\nLucy looks at them momentarily, then at Rachel who was pointing at the door. Frustrated at her options diminishing to zero, she leaves. Rachel goes behind her and locks the door when she leaves.\n\n“Two nights in a row, is she in love with love with Fernando?”, Grandma asks.\n\n“I hope not.”, Dr, Leary said.\n\n“Here…”, Grandma hands her a bottle of ‘Doctor Miracle’s Smelling Salts (c) 1968’. Dr. Leary looks at it.\n\n“1968?”, Dr. Leary asks.\n\n“It only gets stronger with age. “, Grandma explains. “and unlike conventional medications, it does not go bad with age. Add a little Isopropyl Alcohol if it begins to crystallize.”\n\nDr. Leary looks at the cap, seeing that it has not been opened in a very long time. It takes some doing to crack the top open just a tiny bit, its smell gagging and putrid with a sharpness of a knife that can stab life back into the dead. Dr. Leary closes the cap quickly, eyes watering like Hover Dam had burst, coughing up a storm, covering her mouth with the inside of her elbow.\n\n“I told you, I only use the best stuff around.”, Grandma tells her.\n\n“Lady, this stuff is enough to make this community into a Super Fund Clean Up Site like Love Canal….”, Dr. Leary says to herself in English. “Shit… If this stuff wont wake up Fernando, I’ll put him in my car and take him to the hospital myself!”, she switches back to Spanish\n\nGrandma heads back into the room, waiting for Dr. Leary to follow. She enters the room with Rachel right behind her.\n\nDr. Leary sits by Fernando, drawing the bottle to his nose. She inhales a deep breath as to not smell the stuff itself before cracking bottle cap. It takes a second for Fernando to breathe in enough of the stuff, his gag and mammalian reflexes kicks in at the same time, jump starting his brain into ‘Get Out!’ mode. Dr. Leary pulls the bottle away, closing the cap as Fernando’s arm flays outward to get rid of what was at his face to cause such torment and torture. He sits up, coughing violently for a brief moment. After clearing out his nose and throat, he just sits there looking at Dr. Leary.\n\n“Good, you woke up.”, Dr. Leary says. Then she looks at the bottle before handing it back to Grandma. “Keep that out of everyone’s reach!”, she tells her. \n\n“Now I have something in case this happens again.”, Grandma says.\n\n“Now wait a minute. I can see using that if it’s a minor setback like this. But if he does not wake up after that…”, Dr. Leary tells her before being interrupted.\n\n“I remember my medical training, Miss. I know what to do.”, Grandma tells her.\n\nPeeved at her answer, Dr. Leary goes back to Fernando, taking a small flashlight and shines to Fernando’s eyes. Other than he trying to block the flashlight out of the way, the brief moment of light shone into his eyes gives off a normal pupil reaction. “Don’t Do That…”, Fernando tells her.\n\nRachel goes to the night stand and gets his glasses and hands it to him. He puts on the glasses and sighs. “You remember what happened?”, Dr. Leary asks.\n\n“I was arguing with Jorge when he refused to leave me room. Then he tried to hit me, which I blocked. This made me more angry where I wanted to hit him. Then there was a bright flash of light like before and everything went dark.”, he answers her.\n\n“You don’t remember hitting Jorge?”, Rachel asks.\n\n“I hit him?”, Fernando asks.\n\n“Yes you did, and hard too.”, Rachel tells him.\n\n“That’s enough Rachel.”, Dr. Leary says sternly.\n\nRachel bites on her lip for a moment.\n\n“Dinner will be done in an hour. Go wash up and get ready.”, Grandma tells the children in Spanish. “Dr. Leary, if you like, I can make an extra plate for you.”\n\n“Thanks, but maybe next time. I have to go home and get ready for a date.”, Dr. Leary says. \n\n“OK, next time.”, Grandma tells her. She leaves to head t the kitchen to start on dinner.\n\n“Fernando. You need to control that anger of yours before it kills you.”, Dr. Leary tells him. “I understand its not easy but you need to take a step back before acting out. Like your Karate class, learn to fight with control and clarity not in a rage.”\n\nFernando just nods.\n\n“I would like to see you on Saturday. Not before then. Think you can manage a day without passing out from your temper getting the best of you?”, Dr. Leary says and asks.\n\n“I’ll try.”, Fernando says.\n\n“Don’t try. Do. For us and the trip.”, Dr. Leary says.\n\nFernando nods.\n\n“Good. Enjoy your diner and have a good night.”, Dr. Leary says.\n\n“You too…”, Fernando says.\n\nDr. Leary leans over and gives Fernando a kiss on his lips. “I also don’t want my little man to be in the hospital.”, as she pulls away from him, adding, “I’m sure your little sister would not want too either.”\n\nFernando does not know how to reply.\n\n“I have to go. But you remember everything I told you. OK?”, Dr. Leary tells him.\n\n“Yeah…”, Fernando nods slightly.\n\n“Good. Rachel, you keep an eye on him. OK?”, Dr. Leary tells her.\n\nRachel nods before Dr. Leary gets up and leaves the room. Rachel follows her, knowing that Grandma would be too busy to lock the door when she leaves. After a while they make it to the door, Rachel opens it and lets Dr. Leary out. Dr. Leary gets into her Miata and is driving away a few seconds later. Rachel closes the door, locking it in place. She heads to the stairs and pauses for a second. Grandma notices her watching. \n\n“Dinner should be ready about an hour.”, Grandma tells her.\n\n“OK…”, Rachel says, slowly taking the steps up the stairs. She trots up the last three and steps into the hall. She stops by the bedroom door which she shares with her brother. Grabbing the door knob, she hesitates momentarily, letting it go and heads down the hall to Jorge’s room. She catches him reading some Play-Squirrel porn magazine, which he tries to hide but to no avail.\n\n“What the fuck you want?!!”, He almost shouts at her.\n\nShe walks over to his room’s table, taking his computer chair to sit on it. “Grandma is downstairs making dinner, so she does not want to her any fighting.”\n\n“So!”, Jorge tells her.\n\n“I just want to say thank you for not telling grandma.”, Rachel tells him.\n\n“It would not mattered anyway.”, Jorge tells her. “That faggot always gets his way.”\n\n“Why you say that? Mom, your mother, gives you everything.”, Rachel says to him.\n\n“You sleep with Fernando, and lay there for him to fuck you anytime he wants and probably suck his dick when he tells you.”, he says not caring how much it might hurt her.\n\nRachel does not answer, as she does not know how too.\n\n“Get out of my room or suck my dick, bitch.”, Jorge adds to the insults of before.\n\n“Is that what you want?”, Rachel asks, wiping a tear that escapes her control.\n\n“More than anything.”, he tells her.\n\n“If you were as nice as Fernando is to me, I would suck your dick and give you some pussy anytime you want. But you’re so mean you would probably enjoy raping me instead.”, Rachel tells him, holding back from crying as best as she could.\n\n“Damn right I would. Forcing you or any girl to give it up, threaten their lives with hurt, torment and pain, holding her down against her will and force fuck’em good and hard. That’s the way it should be done, because all you girls are bitches, and bitches are no good except to fuck’em and hurt’em.”, he tells her cold.\n\n“What about your mom? She a bitch too?”, Rachel tries to throw at him.\n\n“She was for my father, and Fernando’s father, and who ever she is fucking now because she is a bitch. One of the biggest bitches out there. Just like those bitches on that magazine.”, Jorge throws back at her.\n\n“You’re so fucking mean, you’re going to die or be in jail before you grow up!”, Rachel almost yells at him.\n\nJorge gets up out of his bed, throwing the magazine in his hand to the floor, walking right up to Rachel, grabbing her wrists and makes her stand up, pressing himself against her, putting his mouth to her ear.\n\n“That’s right bitch. One day I am going to rape you like I did with those other girls and if you fight back while I rape you, I’m killing you. And if you tell anyone, I’m going to kill you, and if you tell Fernando, I’m going to kill him first before I kill you.”, he tells her, making her cry. “I have gotten sick and tired living under his shadow, disgusted at being second to him. Its Fernando this and Fernando that, I had enough of him!”\n\n“Please… let me go. You… are scaring me…”, she says between the tears, trembling in his tight grasp.\n\nHe lets her go. She tries to run away but he grabs her by the tail and pulls her against him. He rubs up against her rear, reaching over and grabbing onto one of her developing sensitive breasts with one hand and the other down her crotch and stroking those areas in a deliberate slow action that mocks the tenderness of how the action should be. “One day this little piece of tail is going to be mine because I am going to take it from you and you are not going to say anything about it to anyone unless you want to die.”, Jorge whispers in her ear.\n\n“Noo… please…”, Rachel pleases with him.\n\nHe pushes her away from him, almost making her fall. She gathers her balance and heads straight to the door, opening it and running out the room. She goes to the bathroom, locking the door behind her, sits on the toilet and starts to cry. Only comfort was a wadded up bunch of toilet paper she used to dry her tears. Jorge was back on his bed, laughing to himself as he hears Rachel crying in the other side of the wall that connects the bathroom with his room. She does not get off the toilet for another 30 or so minutes. One of the few things that would upset her is being reminded of her vulnerability.\n\nGrandma calls them down for dinner, a rice and beans meal with stewed chicken and potatoes in a tomato sauce. Jorge comes down first, knocking on the bathroom door to taunt Rachel a bit more. Fernando goes to the bathroom first, but finds the door locked.\n\n“Jorge, stop playing around and open the door!”, Fernando says to the locked door.\n\n“I’m downstairs!”, Jorge yells from the dining area. This made Fernando think, Rachel does not usually lock the bathroom door. Eventually the door opens.\n\nBefore he could say anything, Rachel grabs him by the wrist and pulls him into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. She wraps her arms around him, pinning his arms at the side.\n\nFernando struggles, freeing one arm at least. “You OK?”, he asks her.\n\nShe first nods and then shakes her head.\n\n“Rachel…”, he says as he frees his other arm and then pushes her at the shoulders. “Tell me what’s wrong.”\n\n“That no good fucking Jorge… he threatened that he would rape me one day and that if I complain to anyone he would kill me.”, Rachel says, trying hard not to break down again.\n\n“I’ll take care of him.”, Fernando tells her.\n\n“No… you will pass out again, and he would kill you if you interfered. He said so.”, Rachel tells him.\n\n“I would rather die protecting you than to watch and do nothing while you got hurt.”, he tells her. “Besides… it only happens when I am out of control. You understand what I’m telling you?’\n\nRachel nods. Fernando walks over to the sink to wash his hands and the takes his wet hands and runs them down her face. Taking towel, he dries off his hands and her face. Lets go eat.\n\nTogether they go downstairs and sit at the dining area. Fernando had Rachel sit between him and Jorge. Grandma hands them their dinners, Jorge had started his minutes before. Silently they ate their meals, Fernando observing Jorge, waiting got him to be almost finished.\n\nJorge was about to get out of his chair when Fernando calls him.\n\n“Jorge, you mind one minute of your time.”, Fernando says to him.\n\n“What do you want.”, Jorge more says than asks.\n\n“You ever threaten Rachel again with rape or worse, I’m taking you down. You understand that.”, Fernando tells him.\n\n“Oh like what are you doing to do about it? Pass out before you can hit me!”, Jorge mocks at him.\n\nFernando pulls off his glasses slowly, showing his eyes nearly bright red from the flow of blood to them, pupils nearly closed as they protect the retina from the lights in the room. “Tomarrow morning. After Grandma leaves for shopping. Your choice, backyard or the basement.”\n\n“Backyard. I’ll bring a few friends to watch.”, Jorge tells him.\n\n“Alright. Anything goes, last man standing. Prepare to have your fucking tail handed to you after I strangle you with it.”\n\n“Prepare a coffin, cause I’m burying you.”, Jorge tells him.\n\n“Too bad, Francis will be coming to your funeral on Saturday.”, Fernando throws at him.\n\n“Don’t kid yourself. As soon as you pass out, I’m taking your head off.”, Jorge tells him, “I’m fucking sick of living under your goody two shoe shadow.”\n\n“How about you go to that cave you call a room and prepare yourself to die in the morning.”, Fernando tells him.\n\n“I’ll be preparing on how to kill you, once you pass out, I’m taking your head off.”, Jorge tells him, before walking away and going up the stairs.\n\nFernando picks up his glasses from the table, though it was too late as the colour splotches in his eyes had already formed. He thinks to himself that things will be better in the morning.\n\nThe evening was early. Much of it in Fernando’s room was spent in him trying to comfort his little sister, who was nervous about the whole ordeal. “I fought him before, I’ll fight him again. There is no way out of it for brothers. You need to understand that please. Brothers fight. And that is what we are, brothers.”\n\nLater that night Rachel made love to her brother as if it would be the last time she ever would.\n\nJorge on the other hand goes on his Mac, searching for chat room systems and finds one run by the local ISP.\n\n“Welcome to the Lovejoy Internet Chat System: [Black Room]”\n…\n..\n.\n“LoveJoyMunk> You telling me that you are scared of a blind squirrel!”\n“KingCroc> That squirrel moves too fast to be normal! What is he, a terminator from the movies?”\n“LoveJoyMunk> He’s just a blind squirrel! Look… he has a weakness.”\n“KingCroc> Like what? After Jorge takes care of Fernando, you can take care of both.”\n“KingCroc> Hmmm… Didn’t think of that.”\n“LoveJoyMunk> Of course not, you idiot!”\n“KingCroc> Hey!”\n“LoveJoyMunk> You want me? You take care of the both of them after they do each other, this way you can win and we don’t have to worry about either one of those two trying to take over. Boys will fight, brothers more so, but Jorge knows better. As strong as Fernando maybe be, as equal in fighting skills Fernando have to Jorge, Fernando has this one weakness that seems to strike him down without warning or notice. Grandma enters the house with a full shopping cart, hearing Rachel’s yelling upstairs.

Grandma goes up the stairs quickly, entering Fernando and Rachel’s room. There she finds Jorge being his adamant self, with Rachel on he floor, holding Fernando in her arms.

“What Happened Here?!”, Grandma shouts at the both of them in Spanish.

Jorge refuses to answer, though Grandma can see his bloodied lip. Rachel begins to cry.

“Sit Down!”, Grandma demands Jorge, pointing to the computer chair at Fernando’s computer desk. He silently complies.

Grandma goes over to Rachel and Fernando, pushing the table out of the way for her to make room. Checking his nose for airflow, she finds semi congealed blood instead.

“Did you hit him?!!”, Grandma barks at Jorge.

“No!”, Jorge barks back. “He Hit Me!”

“Mind Your Manner, Boy! Why Is His Nose Bloody?”, Grandma shouts at him.

“I Don’t Know!”, Jorge yells.

“You saw him hit him?”, Grandma turns to Rachel.

“No…”, Rachel answers.

“Then what happened?”, Grandma asks.

“They were arguing, and they started pushing each other, and then Fernando hit him, then he went down.”, Rachel tries to explain.

“He pushed me first.”, Jorge adds.

“You should be protecting your brother, not fighting him!”, Grandma yells at him.

“He Hit Me!”, Jorge yells back.

“What are you doing here anyways?”, Grandma scowls a him.

Rachel looks at him and shakes her head. Jorge does not answer, at least not for now.

“You’re hiding something.”, Grandma tells him.

“Rachel Rodriguez and her sister Francis are coming over this weekend. He said that he was going someplace else and that you were having Rachel go with him to make sure nothing was going to happen. I called him a sissy because you have Rachel protecting him and he hit me and passed out before I could hit him back.”, Jorge keeps from yelling at Grandma.

“The Rodriguez girls are coming over this Saturday? No, they cant come. As nice as they are, they can not be over a hundred mile away from home. Who is going to take care off them?”, Grandma says. “Now… Fernando is no sissy. Far from it. He knows that getting angry could burst a blood vessel in his brain that can kill him. And here you are making him angry! You Want Your Brother Dead?!!”, Grandma starts to go off on him. She slowly gets up and steps away from Fernando. “Pick him up!”

“What?”, Jorge asks in shock and confusion.

“I said pick up your brother and put him in his bed!”, Grandma tells him sternly. I don’t know what or why, nor do I want to know what made you hate him, but he loves you as a brother should.”

“He has a damn funny way of showing it.”, Jorge says to himself.

“What was that?!!”, Grandma steps to his direction. “I told you to pick him up and out him in his bed… so do it!”

Jorge stands his ground.

“Let me get the belt so I can light up your tail!”, Grandma says, taking a couple of steps to the door. Jorge hurries to Fernando’s side as she reaches the door knob, and was surprised as to how light his older brother was as he picked him up. Jorge places him on the bed and steps away. Grandma gives him a stern look. Rachel walks over to the bed, taking off his glasses and putting a pillow under Fernando’s head, then reaches to gather the blanket to cover him with.

“Let him do that.”, Grandma tells her. She turns to him, “You are to stay in your room until I call you for dinner.”

Jorge leaves the room without arguing. Grandma examines Fernando one more time before going to the kitchen. She stops at the door, turning to Rachel. “If he does not wake up in an hour, I’m going to have to take him the hospital.”, Grandma tells her.

“Maybe we should call Dr. Leary?”, Rachel asks.

“We don’t have her number. Besides what can she do what I already did without those fancy X-ray machines to see what is going on his head?”, Grandma answers.

Rachel reaches to the night stand where the Dr. Leary’s cards were, trading the glasses with one of the cards, handing it to Grandma. “Where you got this from?”, Grandma asks.

“Dr. Leary came by in the morning and gave us some papers for you to sign for Saturday’s trip.”, Rachel answers. “She gave us the card too.”

“I see. Where are the papers?”, Grandma replies.

“On the kitchen counter, somewhere.”, Rachel answers.

“Come with me. I’ll call her but you have to give her the details of what happened.”, Grandma tells her. Grandma opens the door and steps out into the hall. She notices that Rachel was not followed her out the door. “Rachel, get over here!”, Grandma calls for her.

Rachel runs out of the room though she wishes she didn’t had go. Grandma heads down the stairs, Rachel follows her down to the living room. Grandma picks up the phone on the end table by one of the chairs. Looking at the card, she dials the second number, which is usually a personal number and not an office number. In this case its was Dr. Leary’s personal cellphone.

The phone rings several times before Dr. Leary answers it.

“Hello?”, Dr. Leary asks.

“Its about time you answered.”, Grandma went on in Spanish. “What took you so long to answer?”

“Fernando’s grandmother?”, Dr. Leary asks in Spanish.

“Who else would it be.”, Grandma went on.

“Is everything alright?”, Dr. Leary asks.

“No. Why else would I be calling? Not to invite you to tea and crumpets”, Grandma explains.

“What happened?”, Dr. Leary asks, trying to be patient with Grandma, knowing too well how she can be.

“Fernando and Jorge had a fist fight, and from what Rachel and Jorge are saying, Fernando hit Jorge to bloody his lip and then passed out. I found blood in his nose but no where else. He seems to have no other injury than that.”, Grandma explains to her.

Dr. Leary sighs, “I’ll be right over in a minute.”

“Need to speak to Rachel? I have her right here next to me.”, Grandma asks and then stated.

“Its OK. Tell her to keep an eye on Fernando and she can tell me everything when I get there.”, Dr. Leary says.

“Thank you.”, Grandma says and then hangs up the phone. “Rachel, go up and keep an eye on Fernando until Dr. Leary arrives.”

Rachel does as she was told, going up the stairs quietly and into the room. She sits down next to him and then lays down to be with him, putting an arm around him and her head on his chest to listen to his beating heart.

It did not take too long for Dr. Leary to arrive, the downstairs door slamming close alerted Rachel to sit up from laying down with her brother. Within the next few seconds they enter the room. Grandma signals for Rachel to get out of the bed. She complies sitting on his computer chair which has the best view of what was going on.

Dr. Leary sits down next to him, examining him with the gear she has in her portable kit. Simple tests and examinations says nothing that she does not already know. Taking him to the hospital would be pointless if it becomes a repeat of what happened the week before. It was a risk she has to outweigh: Hospital or Homecare.

“Ammonia.”, Dr. Leary says to her self.

“Ammonia?”, Grandma asks.

“Maybe the smell of Ammonia would shock him into consciousness.”, Dr. Leary explains.

“Like smelling salts.”, Grandma says.

“Uhm… they don’t make smelling salts anymore.”, Dr. Leary replies.

“Just because they don’t make it does not mean that I still have it. Hold on while I get my medical kit.”, Grandma says. As she started to walk out the room, the door bell rings. “Rachel, go see who is that and do not let them in!”

Rachel nods before getting out to the computer chair and walks down the stairs as Grandma goes into her room. She opens the downstairs door, limiting its travel with her foot. It was Lucy.

“What do you want now?!!”, Rachel almost yells at her.

“Uhm… nothing from you. Is Fernando in?”, Lucy asks.

“He’s sleeping right now.”, Rachel tell her.

“Sleeping? Its not even 6o’clock yet!”, Lucy says.

“He has a bad headache. What ever it is it you want can wait until next year.”, Rachel tells her.

“I know you don’t like me, most sisters sees a new girl as a threat to their brother’s attention.”, Lucy says.

“You’re not listening. He is not feeling well.”, Rachel tells her.

“We will see about that.”, Lucy says, pushing Rachel aside. She walks past her and head to the stairs. Rachel runs past her, blocking the stairs from her to get on.

“What is going on downstairs!”, Grandma looks down from the top of the stairs.

“I told her not to come in but she went past me!”, Rachel says. Dr. Leary walks out of the room, standing behind Grandma.

“Lucy, go home.”, Dr. Leary tells her.

“Can I see Fernando?”, Lucy asks.

“No.”, Dr. Leary tells her sternly. “Now go home.”

Lucy looks at them momentarily, then at Rachel who was pointing at the door. Frustrated at her options diminishing to zero, she leaves. Rachel goes behind her and locks the door when she leaves.

“Two nights in a row, is she in love with love with Fernando?”, Grandma asks.

“I hope not.”, Dr, Leary said.

“Here…”, Grandma hands her a bottle of ‘Doctor Miracle’s Smelling Salts (c) 1968’. Dr. Leary looks at it.

“1968?”, Dr. Leary asks.

“It only gets stronger with age. “, Grandma explains. “and unlike conventional medications, it does not go bad with age. Add a little Isopropyl Alcohol if it begins to crystallize.”

Dr. Leary looks at the cap, seeing that it has not been opened in a very long time. It takes some doing to crack the top open just a tiny bit, its smell gagging and putrid with a sharpness of a knife that can stab life back into the dead. Dr. Leary closes the cap quickly, eyes watering like Hover Dam had burst, coughing up a storm, covering her mouth with the inside of her elbow.

“I told you, I only use the best stuff around.”, Grandma tells her.

“Lady, this stuff is enough to make this community into a Super Fund Clean Up Site like Love Canal….”, Dr. Leary says to herself in English. “Shit… If this stuff wont wake up Fernando, I’ll put him in my car and take him to the hospital myself!”, she switches back to Spanish

Grandma heads back into the room, waiting for Dr. Leary to follow. She enters the room with Rachel right behind her.

Dr. Leary.

“Good, you woke up.”, Dr. Leary says. Then she looks at the bottle before handing it back to Grandma. “Keep that out of everyone’s reach!”, she tells her.

“Now I have something in case this happens again.”, Grandma says.

“Now wait a minute. I can see using that if it’s a minor setback like this. But if he does not wake up after that…”, Dr. Leary tells her before being interrupted.

“I remember my medical training, Miss. I know what to do.”, Grandma tells her.

Peeved at her answer, Dr. Leary goes back to Fernando, taking a small flashlight and shines to Fernando’s eyes. Other than he trying to block the flashlight out of the way, the brief moment of light shone into his eyes gives off a normal pupil reaction. “Don’t Do That…”, Fernando tells her.

Rachel goes to the night stand and gets his glasses and hands it to him. He puts on the glasses and sighs. “You remember what happened?”, Dr. Leary asks.

“I was arguing with Jorge when he refused to leave me room. Then he tried to hit me, which I blocked. This made me more angry where I wanted to hit him. Then there was a bright flash of light like before and everything went dark.”, he answers her.

“You don’t remember hitting Jorge?”, Rachel asks.

“I hit him?”, Fernando asks.

“Yes you did, and hard too.”, Rachel tells him.

“That’s enough Rachel.”, Dr. Leary says sternly.

Rachel bites on her lip for a moment.

“Dinner will be done in an hour. Go wash up and get ready.”, Grandma tells the children in Spanish. “Dr. Leary, if you like, I can make an extra plate for you.”

“Thanks, but maybe next time. I have to go home and get ready for a date.”, Dr. Leary says.

“OK, next time.”, Grandma tells her. She leaves to head t the kitchen to start on dinner.

“Fernando. You need to control that anger of yours before it kills you.”, Dr. Leary tells him. “I understand its not easy but you need to take a step back before acting out. Like your Karate class, learn to fight with control and clarity not in a rage.”

Fernando just nods.

“I would like to see you on Saturday. Not before then. Think you can manage a day without passing out from your temper getting the best of you?”, Dr. Leary says and asks.

“I’ll try.”, Fernando says.

“Don’t try. Do. For us and the trip.”, Dr. Leary says.

Fernando nods.

“Good. Enjoy your diner and have a good night.”, Dr. Leary says.

“You too…”, Fernando says.

Dr. Leary leans over and gives Fernando a kiss on his lips. “I also don’t want my little man to be in the hospital.”, as she pulls away from him, adding, “I’m sure your little sister would not want too either.”

Fernando does not know how to reply.

“I have to go. But you remember everything I told you. OK?”, Dr. Leary tells him.

“Yeah…”, Fernando nods slightly.

“Good. Rachel, you keep an eye on him. OK?”, Dr. Leary tells her.

Rachel nods before Dr.

“Dinner should be ready about an hour.”, Grandma tells her.

“OK…”, Rachel says, slowly taking the steps up the stairs. She trots up the last three and steps into the hall. She stops by the bedroom door which she shares with her brother. Grabbing the door knob, she hesitates momentarily, letting it go and heads down the hall to Jorge’s room. She catches him reading some Play-Squirrel porn magazine, which he tries to hide but to no avail.

“What the fuck you want?!!”, He almost shouts at her.

She walks over to his room’s table, taking his computer chair to sit on it. “Grandma is downstairs making dinner, so she does not want to her any fighting.”

“So!”, Jorge tells her.

“I just want to say thank you for not telling grandma.”, Rachel tells him.

“It would not mattered anyway.”, Jorge tells her. “That faggot always gets his way.”

“Why you say that? Mom, your mother, gives you everything.”, Rachel says to him.

“You sleep with Fernando, and lay there for him to fuck you anytime he wants and probably suck his dick when he tells you.”, he says not caring how much it might hurt her.

Rachel does not answer, as she does not know how too.

“Get out of my room or suck my dick, bitch.”, Jorge adds to the insults of before.

“Is that what you want?”, Rachel asks, wiping a tear that escapes her control.

“More than anything.”, he tells her.

“If you were as nice as Fernando is to me, I would suck your dick and give you some pussy anytime you want. But you’re so mean you would probably enjoy raping me instead.”, Rachel tells him, holding back from crying as best as she could.

“Damn right I would. Forcing you or any girl to give it up, threaten their lives with hurt, torment and pain, holding her down against her will and force fuck’em good and hard. That’s the way it should be done, because all you girls are bitches, and bitches are no good except to fuck’em and hurt’em.”, he tells her cold.

“What about your mom? She a bitch too?”, Rachel tries to throw at him.

“She was for my father, and Fernando’s father, and who ever she is fucking now because she is a bitch. One of the biggest bitches out there. Just like those bitches on that magazine.”, Jorge throws back at her.

“You’re so fucking mean, you’re going to die or be in jail before you grow up!”, Rachel almost yells at him.

Jorge gets up out of his bed, throwing the magazine in his hand to the floor, walking right up to Rachel, grabbing her wrists and makes her stand up, pressing himself against her, putting his mouth to her ear.

“That’s right bitch. Its Fernando this and Fernando that, I had enough of him!”

“Please… let me go. You… are scaring me…”, she says between the tears, trembling in his tight grasp.

He lets her go. “One day this little piece of tail is going to be mine because I am going to take it from you and you are not going to say anything about it to anyone unless you want to die.”, Jorge whispers in her ear.

“Noo… please…”, Rachel pleases with him.

He pushes her away from him, almost making her fall. One of the few things that would upset her is being reminded of her vulnerability.

Grandma calls them down for dinner, a rice and beans meal with stewed chicken and potatoes in a tomato sauce. Jorge comes down first, knocking on the bathroom door to taunt Rachel a bit more. Fernando goes to the bathroom first, but finds the door locked.

“Jorge, stop playing around and open the door!”, Fernando says to the locked door.

“I’m downstairs!”, Jorge yells from the dining area. This made Fernando think, Rachel does not usually lock the bathroom door. Eventually the door opens.

Before he could say anything, Rachel grabs him by the wrist and pulls him into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. She wraps her arms around him, pinning his arms at the side.

Fernando struggles, freeing one arm at least. “You OK?”, he asks her.

She first nods and then shakes her head.

“Rachel…”, he says as he frees his other arm and then pushes her at the shoulders. “Tell me what’s wrong.”

“That no good fucking Jorge… he threatened that he would rape me one day and that if I complain to anyone he would kill me.”, Rachel says, trying hard not to break down again.

“I’ll take care of him.”, Fernando tells her.

“No… you will pass out again, and he would kill you if you interfered. He said so.”, Rachel tells him.

“I would rather die protecting you than to watch and do nothing while you got hurt.”, he tells her. “Besides… it only happens when I am out of control. You understand what I’m telling you?’

Rachel nods. Fernando walks over to the sink to wash his hands and the takes his wet hands and runs them down her face. Taking towel, he dries off his hands and her face. Lets go eat.

Together they go downstairs and sit at the dining area. Fernando had Rachel sit between him and Jorge. Grandma hands them their dinners, Jorge had started his minutes before. Silently they ate their meals, Fernando observing Jorge, waiting got him to be almost finished.

Jorge was about to get out of his chair when Fernando calls him.

“Jorge, you mind one minute of your time.”, Fernando says to him.

“What do you want.”, Jorge more says than asks.

“You ever threaten Rachel again with rape or worse, I’m taking you down. You understand that.”, Fernando tells him.

“Oh like what are you doing to do about it? Pass out before you can hit me!”, Jorge mocks at him.

Fernando pulls off his glasses slowly, showing his eyes nearly bright red from the flow of blood to them, pupils nearly closed as they protect the retina from the lights in the room. “Tomarrow morning. After Grandma leaves for shopping. Your choice, backyard or the basement.”

“Backyard. I’ll bring a few friends to watch.”, Jorge tells him.

“Alright. Anything goes, last man standing. Prepare to have your fucking tail handed to you after I strangle you with it.”

“Prepare a coffin, cause I’m burying you.”, Jorge tells him.

“Too bad, Francis will be coming to your funeral on Saturday.”, Fernando throws at him.

“Don’t kid yourself. As soon as you pass out, I’m taking your head off.”, Jorge tells him, “I’m fucking sick of living under your goody two shoe shadow.”

“How about you go to that cave you call a room and prepare yourself to die in the morning.”, Fernando tells him.

“I’ll be preparing on how to kill you, once you pass out, I’m taking your head off.”, Jorge tells him, before walking away and going up the stairs.

Fernando picks up his glasses from the table, though it was too late as the colour splotches in his eyes had already formed. He thinks to himself that things will be better in the morning.

The evening was early. Much of it in Fernando’s room was spent in him trying to comfort his little sister, who was nervous about the whole ordeal. “I fought him before, I’ll fight him again. There is no way out of it for brothers. You need to understand that please. Brothers fight. And that is what we are, brothers.”

Later that night Rachel made love to her brother as if it would be the last time she ever would.

Jorge on the other hand goes on his Mac, searching for chat room systems and finds one run by the local ISP.

“Welcome to the Lovejoy Internet Chat System: [Black Room]”
…
..
.
“LoveJoyMunk> You telling me that you are scared of a blind squirrel!”
“KingCroc> That squirrel moves too fast to be normal! What is he, a terminator from the movies?”
“LoveJoyMunk> He’s just a blind squirrel! Look… he has a weakness.”
“KingCroc> Like what? Kryponite!”
“LoveJoyMunk> Take me seriously, will ya?!!”
[moment of silence]
“LoveJoyMunk> Look, he’s fast and super strong but he can not keep it up forever. He tires out quickly, all you have to do is not get hit and the moment he slows down, he’s tired and you can chomp on his furry tail! You hearing me?!!”
“KingCroc> I hear you.”
“LoveJoyMunk> Lose another fight to him and you can go look for another chipmunk to treat you like a king.”
“*AlphaSquirrel has entered the room.”
“AlphaSquirrel> This is too obvious. Don’t you have your own chat room service like on Google or Yahoo?”
“KingCroc> Who the fuck are you.”
“AlphaSquirrel> I’m not who you two are talking about. But I will be kicking his tail tomorrow. I’ll definitely be there, along with the others.”
“LoveJoyMunk> Would love to be there, but got to work.”
“KingCroc> Take the day off.”
“LoveJoyMunk> Wish I could. Mrs. Trousers can be a bitch at times.”
“AlphaSquirrel> Good Night assholes.”
“*AlphaSquirrel has left the room.”
“KingCroc> Who is he calling an asshole?”
“LoveJoyMunk> You, you asshole.”
“KingCroc> Hey!”
“LoveJoyMunk> You are an asshole… Don’t you see an opportunity here?!! After Jorge takes care of Fernando, you can take care of both.”
“KingCroc> Hmmm… Didn’t think of that.”
“LoveJoyMunk> Of course not, you idiot!”
“KingCroc> Hey!”
“LoveJoyMunk> You want me? You take care of the both of them after they do each other, this way you can win and we don’t have to worry about either one of those two trying to take over. Of you want a Squirrel telling you what to do?”
“KingCroc> You got a point there.”
“*LoveJoyMunk has left the room.”
“KingCroc> Hey!”

“Welcome to the Lovejoy Internet Chat System:”
…
..
.
WhiteySquirrel> Heard anything from Fernando?
BlackBushyTail> No. You got an email from Rachel or Grace?
WhiteySquirrel> I have not checked my email sine my other me came.
HappyVixen> Who’s Grace?
