"description": "March 21, 1981 - Monday.\n(After the weekend before https://inkbunny.net/submissionview.php?id=616996 )\n\nI was not expecting Cathy to return to school, though she might be on Tuesday or Wednesday. She had been through a lot and though I should be there, at least her sisters promised me that they would take care of her in my absence. Seeing her in Math Class was a major surprise to me. I cautiously walk to my seat behind hers.\n\n\"Good morning.\" I say softly to Cathy as I approach our chairs.\n\n\"Good morning.\" Cathy replies as I get to her desk and I get my bookbag from my shoulder to sit down in mine.\n\nMr. Wienstein pauses his morning math class until I sit down, making another one of his snide remarks, \"You had all weekend to talk to each other.\"\n\n\"Actually no, Mr. Wienstein. Cathy and I are not friends for us to be calling each other and for either one of us to take a train across the city to visit the other. And as far as I believe Cathy was with her family, I was in the hospital all weekend from an allergy attack. In fact I have a medical note in case I had to miss classes today.\" I tell him.\n\n\"Well, you're here now. Care to answer the problem on the board.\" Mr. Wienstein says.\n\n\"You know I cant exactly see it, so can you say it?\" I ask.\n\n\"Graph the function where X squared = 2X = X plus X.\" Mr. Wienstein says.\n\n\"Well, there are only two numbers that fit that criteria but no number between them, less than or greater than they are. So that means that their points would be closed with no connecting lines, and their values are 0,0 and Positive 2, Positive 4.\" I explain.\n\n\"Wrong.\" Mr. Wienstein says.\n\n\"Unless you are counting Infinity as a number, I do not see how I could be wrong.\" I say.\n\n\"You just are.\" Mr. Wienstein says.\n\n\"Then, am I partially right?\" I ask.\n\n\"I could give you partial credit, but on the regents there is no partial credit. Its either full credit or no credit.\" Mr. Wienstein says.\n\n\"But this is an AP Calculus class. There was no Regents for it, maybe college credit if you pay for it. And I do not have $1200 to pay for the college credit.\" I tell him.\n\n\"Enough of that.\" Mr Wienstien says.\n\n\"Besides, LIU (Long Island University) down the street grades our final AP Exams and grades based from those exams, not you. It's on those papers we filled out in the beginning of the term.\" I tell him.\n\nThe class \"Ooo's\" upon being reminded of that little fact. Mr Wienstein stands there stunned at the revelation that I got him where I want him - powerless to enact on the threat of failure. Since I got a 95 on the class' midterms, I have passed the class with a minimum of a C grade if I did not take the final exam and he knows it.\n\nI finish of my choice of words, \"Prove where I am wrong.\"\n\nMr Wienstein scowls at me for the moment before going to the black board. He draws an X-Y Line Graph on the board.\n\n\"First of all, we all know that the squared line graph makes a parabola, from trigonometry two years ago. So we aill start off with a test of a few numbers to make this parabola with the formula of Y = X Squared, lets say from -4 to +4, its bottom will be at point 0,0. Next we will draw the line where values are doubled - Y = X plus X or 2X and test it with the same points of -4 to +4.\" Mr Wienstien says as he draws the lines. They intersect at the points where I said they would: 0 and 2 on the X Axis. Absentmindedly he puts an X on the two points where I said they would be: 0,0 and +2,+4.\n\n\"Now, you see where you are wrong?\" Mr. Wientein says.\n\nAnthony Wiener says, \"Mr. Wienstein, Fernando was right.\"\n\n\"No he is not!\" Mr. Wienstien says out loud, lifting up his math book and slamming it on the table.\n\nThe class begins to argue against Mr. Wienstien. I get up and slam my mathbook on the table. Mr. Wienstein and the class suddenly gets quiet as get up from my desk.\n\n\"Mr. Wienstien, I will be leaving with Cathy to get to our next classes. But I will have to say this before I go. A teacher's job is a lot more than to teach. It is to praise those are are correct, and help those who need to be taught the right way. It is to send their student to the next level of learning to get better jobs and better lives. But ever since I walked in through those doors you have been on my ass for one reason or another. On every quiz, exam and state regents you ever gave me I scored 95 percent or better, and yet you given me a 65 as a grade. What have I ever done to you? I'm a handicapped student, Mr. Wienstein, where in the past you were reminded of my handicap by the staff of this school and were told to pass me accordingly as per what I do on those tests, so what I turn messy homework. Want me to hand it in Braille? Knowing you, you would fail me for that alone! But I do know this - You're a Jew, I'm a Puerto Rican, Cathy is black as are a few members of this class, and yet you grade us minorities on a lower grade than the white and asian kids of this class as we all compared notes. I do not care if you are a Jew, Puerto Rican, Black or what ever. All I ever cared about is that you are the teacher and I am the student and you were supposed to teach me without prejudice or deficiency because if you did you would fail as a teacher. So, while I walk out to my next class, I leave you with everyone on this subject. I did nothing to you, you have tried to fail me on every excuse you tried to make but couldn't because I'm that good. So think - I have done better than Chang in the front row but my grade is 30 points lower than his? When I graduate from this school, I will sue you on every count I can think off, and in suing you, smear you name and reputation to the point where you will not work here or any other school in the nation ever again, and what job you can get, I will get a portion of your pay. You need to rethink what you have done and undo it or face what I just told you. Lets all remember what happened to Ms. Souze. If you do not know who Ms Souze is, ask the others here. Some of them were in the class with me.\" I tell him. I then pack up my things, \"Cathy, lets go.\"\n\n\"Who is Ms Souze?\" Mr. Wienstein asks for me to answer which I don't. As Cathy and I walk out the door, I can hear Stu answer for me.\n\n\"Ms Souze was our Fourth Term English Teacher. Fernando had to miss her class for a couple of weeks because he was absent on those days for medical reasons. But when he returned, she had a talk with him, which his recorder picked up her saying, 'Don't worry about making up the work. I only pass the white kids and fail these fucking Black and Hispanics ones, and make these Chinese bastards work hard for the lowest grades I can give them.' She was fired two weeks later, and lost her retirement money because of it.\" Stu explains to Mr. Wienstein.\n\nI would have loved to have seen Mr. Wienstein's face right about now but I walk away from the math classroom door. Cathy trots up from behind me and then grabs onto my arm - something she has never done before, not in this sense as she was doing it, as if she's finally acknowledged that I was her boyfriend. We continue to the stairs where I head to my next class - American History - from Civil War to 1950. We stop in front of my class.\n\n\"Cathy, is there something I should know?\" I ask her.\n\n\"Nooo...\" Cathy draws out her answer as she stands in front of me trying to sound all innocent.\n\n\"Well, your class is... I do not know where your class is. You always walked me to mine and then you leave.\" I say to her.\n\n\"I'll go, but first I have something to give you.\" Cathy says.\n\n\"What?\" I ask.\n\nCathy steps up to me and gives me a long intimate tongue kiss usually reserved for after school and alone time in the book room. After several passing seconds, she steps back away from me, picking up her bookbag.\n\n\"Thank you for saving my twin...\" Cathy lets out before running away.\n\nIt took me a few seconds for her statement to register.\n\n\"Katherine?\" I then say as I look down the hall where she ran to but she had long since disappeared.",

But I do know this - You&#039;re a Jew, I&#039;m a Puerto Rican, Cathy is black as are a few members of this class, and yet you grade us minorities on a lower grade than the white and asian kids of this class as we all compared notes. I did nothing to you, you have tried to fail me on every excuse you tried to make but couldn&#039;t because I&#039;m that good. Some of them were in the class with me.&quot; I tell him. I then pack up my things, &quot;Cathy, lets go.&quot;<br /><br />&quot;Who is Ms Souze?&quot; Mr. Wienstein asks for me to answer which I don&#039;t. As Cathy and I walk out the door, I can hear Stu answer for me.<br /><br />&quot;Ms Souze was our Fourth Term English Teacher. Fernando had to miss her class for a couple of weeks because he was absent on those days for medical reasons. But when he returned, she had a talk with him, which his recorder picked up her saying, &#039;Don&#039;t worry about making up the work. I only pass the white kids and fail these fucking Black and Hispanics ones, and make these Chinese bastards work hard for the lowest grades I can give them.&#039; She was fired two weeks later, and lost her retirement money because of it.&quot; Stu explains to Mr. Wienstein.<br /><br />I would have loved to have seen Mr. Wienstein&#039;s face right about now but I walk away from the math classroom door. Cathy trots up from behind me and then grabs onto my arm - something she has never done before, not in this sense as she was doing it, as if she&#039;s finally acknowledged that I was her boyfriend. We continue to the stairs where I head to my next class - American History - from Civil War to 1950. We stop in front of my class.<br /><br />&quot;Cathy, is there something I should know?&quot; I ask her.<br /><br />&quot;Nooo...&quot; Cathy draws out her answer as she stands in front of me trying to sound all innocent.<br /><br />&quot;Well, your class is... I do not know where your class is. You always walked me to mine and then you leave.&quot; I say to her.<br /><br />&quot;I&#039;ll go, but first I have something to give you.&quot; Cathy says.<br /><br />&quot;What?&quot; I ask.<br /><br />Cathy steps up to me and gives me a long intimate tongue kiss usually reserved for after school and alone time in the book room. After several passing seconds, she steps back away from me, picking up her bookbag.<br /><br />&quot;Thank you for saving my twin...&quot; Cathy lets out before running away.<br /><br />It took me a few seconds for her statement to register.<br /><br />&quot;Katherine?&quot; I then say as I look down the hall where she ran to but she had long since disappeared.</span>",
