"writing": "Let's see, that is about 43 years ago? Give or take a month or so. We were living through a life where things could go up in a mushroom cloud at the press of a Red Button on some wooden desk in Washington DC or Soviet Moscow. Everything then was \"Me\" and \"Now,\" many were proud to get an education, prove that they went through the system to get their high school diploma or college degree. Many were in a May-Fly mindset of \"Live Now, Die Tomorrow\" so many of us got married soon after high school while going to the Military, Trade School, or College/University, to get jobs to make money to raise our future families. There were no excuses to continue on.\n\nLife was hard then but we were harder. We met life's challenges head on and fought it - Win, Lose or Draw. At least we stood up to it and not make excuses. Yes, there were the problems of various Social Ills keeping a tiny few from going past their problems. Poverty was at an all time high, tall buildings in the city did not hide the slums and ghettos, only made them harder to find; and the problems therein were unimaginable unless one lived through it or are living through it right now in some Second or Third World Country. And just around the corner about to rear its ugly head: GRIDS, which later turned to AIDS.\n\nThere were a lot more issues in life during this time. But activism would soon rear its ugly head in the form of an angered momma bear. What am I talking about? M.A.D.D. or \"Mothers Against Drunk Drivers.\" Before 1981 there was no state or federal minimum drinking age, nor was there for smoking. But in the Spring '79 to Summer of '80 there were several fatal car accidents involving drunk teens. Three of these accidents were in Long Island, NYS. With families trying to prove their children's innocence, they discovered that insurance does not cover for drunk drivers, and these dead teens were 16 (NYS minimum age to get a license) to 19 were dunk behind the wheel. Thus the mothers (literally) of these dead drunk driving teens formed M.A.D.D. They passed State and Federal legislation for the minimal driving age to 18 by 1981 (and later 21 in 1984). No more legal teen drinking though it did not affect me as I turned 18 in early 1981 (and 21 in 1984).\n\nBut at the same came conscription for the draft, aka. Selective Service is where all men turning 18 were to sign up to Selective Service on their 18th Birthday. Those who were over 18 and under 25 when the law was passed had to sign up within a year. Personally I do not care what you may think of it but if you want to be a citizen of this country, you need to sign up. Like it is said in many situations, \"if you do not like it, then leave.\" Almost every nation has some form of conscription and currently in the Ukraine, if you are an able body male from 16 to 65, you need to fight for your country. Other nations like Switzerland, Sweden, Israel, (South) Korea, etc., it is mandatory for all able bodied males (and females in some cases) to be in the military for 2 to 5 years, if not then you must work in community service for 5 to 10 years - the choice is yours.\n\nThough wanting to be rich was on everyone's mind, all knew that there were no shortcuts to be taken and one had to do a lot of hard work. Computers (TRS 80, Apple II, Commodore PET, Atari 800/400, et al.) were a solution looking for problem, the Atari 2600 was ruling video game system on the market outside of the computer market. Computers were broken into \"Business Computers\", \"Personal Computers\" and \"Home Computers\" before IBM unified the PC Market in 1984.\n\nButtons were a major thing then, everyone showed off their personal/political views by the buttons they wore. Two major ones being Pro/Against Nuclear Power and the \"ANTI\" button. The Nuclear buttons came after the Three Mile Island (Pennsylvania) partial meltdown, and not far from the nuclear plant was a Cow Pasture. Thus somebody took the image of a cow and have say \"No Nukes\". It was immediately followed by the Nuclear Power Plant saying \"No Cows.\" I wore the latter.\n\nThe \"ANTI\" button was a strange one though its premise was simple \"Whatever the group, social, political standing on an issue was, one wearing the \"ANTI'' button was against it.\" But it did not start there, as there were \"Anti\" or \"No\" buttons for various followings until one day somebody made a button that just said \"ANTI\" in White Lettering on a Black Background. What was one \"Anti\" about? Ask them. But be aware that you may not agree with them and it is better to let one believe in what they want to believe than to try to change their mind. Respect on the Point of View of others was high back then, not like it today where everyone is entitled to the belief that everyone must abide to their Point Of View or else. To that I say \"Go Fuck Yourself!\"\n\nHere is what those three buttons looked like. Some of you my age or so may remember these. Hope it brings a smile to your face.\n\n(Written and posted up in the Time Span of listening to Iron Butterfly's In Da Gadda Da Vida).\n\n",
