"writing": "Monty; The Girlfriend That Never Happened\n\nAs life turned out, I have `dated' quite a few girls in a short time, with nearly all of them becoming a girlfriend for who knows how long. But as life turned out, I married one of them despite the hatred and warning of so-called friends, shared a short life with her only to have her killed in crime of passion by a former lover of hers.\n\nBut roll back a few years, between Maria/Sophie/Tonya (1975-78), my `girls' Rachel/Debbie/Stephanie (1977-82) and Grace/Cathy/Juanita (1976-82), there was Monty (1976-80), Monty Washington. Monty was the only girl of a family of 4 siblings and twin to one of them, sharing the `Middle Child' position with her brother Otis. Their oldest was Tyrone, and youngest was Daryl. Tyrone learned young to get out of gangs, but still had connections when needed. Otis, like his twin sister Monty, was an ``Egg-Head,'' a child who constantly studied, even when there was no school. Daryl, being a baby at the time was with their parent constantly. Monty was one and half years younger than I was, and her family lived in the same building as Grace and I did. In fact, they lived on the same floor as Grace.\n\nDuring this time (1975-80) I was training to be a teen lifeguard and in the summer was a teen life guard at Jefferson Pool's ``The Pit,'' a diving pool with a diving tower, 16ft deep. The pool is a killer. So while I was training or working, Monty would show up and park her things under my tower seat station. Despite having her brothers to hang out with, Monty preferred to go to the pool alone. Her brothers would drop her off at the line forming at the pool's entrance before it opens, and eventually notice that I was working there when I would go to the pool at around the same time they left for there, and see me allowed to go through the gate while others are forced to wait. One day they would surround me and ask me questions, to which I answer honestly about working there. Eventually, they would tell me to watch Monty for them while she is there.\n\nThanks to Grace, Monty was already on a friends level with me, and those two forced me to take them out on dates, usually involving the both of them at the same time. Thank god that my lifeguard job was a high paying one, for they were expensive as dates went! Being friends with Monty, we got to a level of comfort with each other. When I broke up with Mary, Grace tried to hook me up with Monty while Monty tried to hook me up with Grace. In the least, this was interesting and very humorous. Then Grace got a job at the community day-care, and Monty remained unemployed. This allowed Monty to be at the pool on a daily basis.\n\nMonty was the one that kept the relationship going but yet controlled and within certain set lines from which it could go. We dated, we kissed, we took at all the way, but it was because she led it there and in explanation, she said what happened was because we were friends who cared for each other a lot. She would never say that she or we were in love, except for the very end. But for her our friendship was more important to her than anything else. And she was a bit of a worry wart at times when I put my life on the line to rescue somebody on the job.\n\nAfter a while, she would come over to the pool with lunch for the both of us. Though I was open to many foods to many cultures, it was through her where I was introduced to Black and Soul food, as well as Tupperware. To others, it would seem that we were in a serious relationship, and Monty wanted it that way. Except for my cousins and a couple close friends (Rhadisha, Miriam, Susie, Grace and/or Tonya), Monty made sure that the girls in the pool know that I already have a girlfriend and that she is it. In a way it was a good thing, for certain lifeguards like my partner Teddy Bear, taking girls home to have sex with was a spectator sport to many. So in a way, Monty protected me from potential problem from other girls. Like Grace, Rachel, Debbie, Stephanie and Cathy, Monty ended up one of the few `civilians' allowed into the Lifeguard Station when I was there. And she often gathered my things while I dressed to get ready and prepare my tower-chair for me. Of all the girls, Monty was quiet and reserved when many were not.\n\nWho knows how far this relationship would have went. We did talk about marriage and her reply was ``Why mess up a good thing we have?'' though eventually she would answer ``you're one of the few guys I would marry because I know how you are.'' Outside of summers and during the school sessions, we, along with Grace, dated mostly on weekends and holidays. Like me, Monty liked going to the Museum of Natural History, and hanging out in the park. She was also there when I went into Bicycle Racing Competition. If we would have continued, she would have went with me to my Fencing competitions. As a girlfriend, she was very loyal to my needs and lifestyle. When she found out I had to go to Life Guard Winter Training, which took away from our dating time, she went with me and then we went out for lunch or dinner afterwards. But when I ask her if we were girlfriend and boyfriend, she said that we were friends - very close friends. This despite her telling other girls we knew that I was off limits to them because I was hers.\n\nAs a relationship, it was a calm and least drama ridden of them all. Neither one of us would put demands on the other while we were in tune with each other in such a way that we knew what the other needed, when and where. Among our families, there was no strife about race or any other issues like I had with other girls. As I seen it, if the brothers saw it was alright for me to date their sister, so were the parents. Monty was one of the few girls allowed to visit me at home; Grace, Maria and Sophie were the only ones who could at the time. It seemed that this would have continued to a happy end.\n\nThen came October 1980. There were changes going on the neighborhood, bad changed involving gangs and a new drug hitting the streets: Crack. There were a couple of boys in the neighborhood that thought they could have any girl they so wanted. These boys were in the newly formed gang ``The Decepticons.'' The Decepticons wanted Tyrone to join their ranks and use him to get Monty. Tyrone refused, and though he tried to use his contacts from his former gang member friends, his protection only went so far and only to himself. In this, Otis would be killed. Though the circumstances and reasons of his murder were mysterious, his murderer and the gang connection were not. Because Otis was murdered, their family decided to leave the projects after the boy's funeral. That ended our relationship in a very abrupt ending. The last time I saw her, she was getting on a moving truck, but stepped out to give me a hug and a kiss for the last time and tell me that she loved me before she left with her family to a new home.\n\nIt would be some 35 years later, I would run into Tyrone and we discussed about the old time. According to him Monty did not date anyone until she was a couple of years in college. She missed me terribly and having both her twin and her boyfriend ripped from her was hard on her. Eventually she would recover. She would find Love again, get married and raise a family and have a career. In the least, I'm glad she was able to recover and continue. He promised me that one day he would have her come down to see me under the guise of seeing family and friends in the neighborhood. Until then, I wait.\n\n",

If we would have continued, she would have went with me to my Fencing competitions. As a girlfriend, she was very loyal to my needs and lifestyle. When she found out I had to go to Life Guard Winter Training, which took away from our dating time, she went with me and then we went out for lunch or dinner afterwards. But when I ask her if we were girlfriend and boyfriend, she said that we were friends - very close friends. This despite her telling other girls we knew that I was off limits to them because I was hers.
As a relationship, it was a calm and least drama ridden of them all. Neither one of us would put demands on the other while we were in tune with each other in such a way that we knew what the other needed, when and where. Among our families, there was no strife about race or any other issues like I had with other girls. As I seen it, if the brothers saw it was alright for me to date their sister, so were the parents. Monty was one of the few girls allowed to visit me at home; Grace, Maria and Sophie were the only ones who could at the time. It seemed that this would have continued to a happy end.
Then came October 1980. There were changes going on the neighborhood, bad changed involving gangs and a new drug hitting the streets: Crack. There were a couple of boys in the neighborhood that thought they could have any girl they so wanted. These boys were in the newly formed gang ``The Decepticons.'' The Decepticons wanted Tyrone to join their ranks and use him to get Monty. Tyrone refused, and though he tried to use his contacts from his former gang member friends, his protection only went so far and only to himself. In this, Otis would be killed. Though the circumstances and reasons of his murder were mysterious, his murderer and the gang connection were not. Because Otis was murdered, their family decided to leave the projects after the boy's funeral. That ended our relationship in a very abrupt ending. The last time I saw her, she was getting on a moving truck, but stepped out to give me a hug and a kiss for the last time and tell me that she loved me before she left with her family to a new home.
It would be some 35 years later, I would run into Tyrone and we discussed about the old time. According to him Monty did not date anyone until she was a couple of years in college. She missed me terribly and having both her twin and her boyfriend ripped from her was hard on her. Eventually she would recover. She would find Love again, get married and raise a family and have a career. In the least, I'm glad she was able to recover and continue. He promised me that one day he would have her come down to see me under the guise of seeing family and friends in the neighborhood. Until then, I wait.
