"description": "I had a spell back in early July where I drew a bunch of mechs and came up with some lore about how feral mechs are used in the Scavenger world.\n\nSomeone asked \"Why do people in your scavenger story need ferals for companionship? How would they cause all ferals to go extinct but leave anthros?\", which prompted some thoughts about them.\n\nIt wasn't so much that they went extinct as much as society became hostile to their well-being. There is no wild land, there is no forest, it's entirely urban. So, wildlife has no home there. That, mixed with the noise and the pollution and clutter makes it where any domestic biological animal would be miserable in those environments. There are things that anthros can use (such as oxygen dispensers and earplugs) to cut down on noise and pollution but the same can't be afforded to ferals, nor would businesses probably even want to.\n\nThat said, there's still that desire for companionship. Not everyone is successful at making friends or romantic partners but they're still lonely, and that's where mechs come in. You can adopt a mech pet or use mechs for service animals / jobs / housework / etc etc. I imagine that mechs aren't as common as domestic pets are in IRL but they're not rare either. There's different brands so you can get a \"budget\" mech that mainly serves for companion purposes or a more expensive \"quality\" mech that's built for labor as well. A single income household could probably afford a budget mech, and many tend to to have someone around to keep them company. Whereas a family or business might adopt labor mechs that would function as unpaid employees/maid/etc etc. Insomuch as a feral animal could.\n\nMechs operate essentially as a biological feral, except programmable. They're a mixture of animalistic behavior mixed with computer thinking, so they are \"sentient\" and yet able to be both trained and entirely reprogrammed. This, obviously, has a lot of moral grey areas, but alas. There are some laws that apply to them, but not many. For the most part, despite \"sentience\", they are legally seen as machines. You're not likely to face trouble for neglecting one, unfortunately, though particularly heinous behavior might. But who could be mean to a mech?\n\nUnfortunately, mech neglect isn't uncommon. They don't require food, but they require software updates and repairs, obviously, as well as fluids to keep them mobile. If someone doesn't want to spend to maintain their mech, well, who are they (legally) hurting but themselves? That said, it's still socially frowned upon. While they are LEGALLY seen mostly as machines, their sentience is obvious enough to most people that you would get looked at for mech neglect in the same way one would something like keeping your dog chained up outside.\n\nThat said, I had a strange itch to draw a lot of mechs not being treated very kindly.
