But you should also be aware by now that I'm not a man who lets “spos'tas” get in his way. =P So with that said, it happened again. I started writing a sexy caption for this pic, but it became so long I decided to just make it its own short story, so expect that eventually. And a very non-boner-inducing caption in the meantime.\n\nSo, how is this for a picture to upload on Easter Sunday of all days? An icon of sin and Satanic worshi- WHOAwhoawhoa, hold on a second! Is that what this guy really represents? I always just saw him as the archetypal demon you see everywhere, but my fascination with mythology and folklore wouldn't leave it at that. This caprine cutie is known as Baphomet, and he's a widely popular avatar of the occult which I recognized, but one about which I lacked any real understanding. You see the goat-headed demon everywhere, most frequently in conjunction with notions of evil and Satan. That's what I thought he represented, until I actually took the time to research his origins. Turns out his true symbolism is as fascinating as it is complex!\n\nBaphomet is a collection of several aspects of folklore clashing with establishment which have evolved frequently over time. So much, in fact, that he's practically become symbolic of himself! Like dragons and vampires, horned and goat-like entities are found in almost every culture throughout history, representing everything from fertility, to nature, to luck, to benevolence, and to wickedness, just to name a few. But the most popular depiction of such an entity is from nineteenth-century occultist Eliphas Levi's book, Dogmes et Rituels de la Haute Magie. This particular rendition of Bapthomet arose from alchemy, through the usage of combining different forces to create \"astral light.\" What is \"astral light?\" Well, that depends on who you ask. The actual definition may vary, but they are all symbolic for one thing: enlightenment.\n\nBecause of its origins in alchemy, Levi's Baphomet focuses on balance through opposites. He points in opposite directions. He has the breasts of a female, and a caduceus (which itself is a symbol of enlightenment) to represent an erect penis-- a trait of great importance to occult followers because they believed hermaphroditism put one close to God. He has the words “solve” and “coagula,” two opposite but pivotal concepts of alchemy, scrawled on each of his arms. He has the physical traits of an animal, representing man's base and primal nature, but also has a torch upon his head, representing illumination and spirituality. All of these paint Baphomet as not so much a religious being, but more of an icon representing intellectual pursuit.\n\nHowever, the concept of Baphomet existed far earlier than Levi, his earliest mention appearing just before the era of the Knights Templar in 1098. If you're at all familiar with the story of the Knights Templar, when the Catholic church's grudge with them reached a boiling point, the Knights were accused of worshiping Baphomet as part of the church's inquisition against them. Whether or not that was actually true, or if the church merely used that as an excuse to get rid of them, is up for debate, as there are sources supporting both. Regardless of the Knights' association with Baphomet and what their beliefs of him were if they actually did worship him, the Catholic church's smear campaign pervaded, and the goat-headed figure has been linked to Satan and unholy rituals ever since.\n\nBecause of the church and the Knights' influence, he's popped up frequently throughout history by many societies. Ironically, this has made Baphomet a symbol for the very question as to what he represents-- that being, it depends on who you ask. For some, he's enlightenment, and to others, heresy. Some say he's good, some say he's evil. Light and dark, give and take, above and below, he represents the equilibrium when one cannot exist without the other. Much like the technology of the time from which he was born and that of modern day, he's only as evil as you want him to be.\n\nYou'll be hearing more about him from me soon… =3",
