Yatzil had endured the path through the shifting sands, following the ancient markers that would guide the Heliolisk to the sacred haven. The young in her belly had grown large and active in the final months of her pregnancy. Yatzil's tribe had a tradition that every first-time mother, upon reaching her due date, would walk into the desert canyons beyond her village. The pilgrimage was to clear their minds and focus on the holy task of bringing their children into the world. With a pack of supplies carrying all that she would require, the Heliolisk set off. Alone, with only the child in her belly as company and the watchful eyes of their great goddess guiding her.
Days spent on the path were long, but Yatzil enjoyed drinking in the bright sun with her frills extended. The only worry she had was the warning pangs and cramps that started to grip her tight womb. But Yatzil had faith that she would not falter now, at the final leg of her journey. Whispering a prayer to Mew, the goddess that had given them all life and to whose temple Yatzil journeyed to have her baby in the presence of Mew. Another burgeoning contraction made the first-time mother stop, panting against the worn, sandstone canyon walls while her baby squirmed and prodded in protest. It was getting hard to walk. Every fiber of her being yelled at her to squat down and give into the urges.
Gritting her teeth, Yatzil pushes herself off the wall and shoulders her back. She just had to keep moving. She would prove herself worthy before Mew and obtain Her blessings for her baby and herself. Rubbing tenderly at the apex of her swell where Mew's glyph was painted, the Heliolisk rounds a corner and stops. She heard the trickling of water first before seeing the wooden structure housed in the midst of a cluster of verdant life around a pool of crisp, clear water.
Yatzil lets out a squeak of delight, the young mother waddles forth towards the shrine. Her feet, dusty from walking on stone and sand, were greeted by cool grass. Even the child in her belly calmed, sensing that the endless walking by their mother was at an end. Yatzil strokes her rounded middle as she enters the shrine. She could go back home with a blessing from Mew and her baby in her arms. Her tribe, her mate, they would know she was strong and capable.
A grass bed was set up beneath Mew's statue resplendent with a rounded belly to showcase her fertility. Setting her pack down she utters a prayer of thanks as she reclines against the statue. Yatzil sighs, stroking her tense swell. With the gaze of Mew upon her, Yatzil could rest and prepare to welcome her baby.
It wouldn't be long now. Soon, she'd get to hold her baby.
