The life of a royal was always rather boring and restricting for young Dylan. He was the most talented in magic of all his brothers and cousins, but he was also the most bored from his life on their estate. He felt like he wanted something more, something exciting. He dreamt of adventure and exploration, of seeing the world with his own eyes and finding new fantastical places that he saw while reading his books.
Being the most confident of his brothers, his rather good proficiency at magic made him feel like there was nothing he couldn’t overcome even despite his young age. Alas, he didn’t think of himself as a child but even though he was well learned he was also sheltered and thus saw the world only through his young naïve eyes. It was this childish way of thinking combined with encouragement from his uncle that made him run away from home so he could go and explore.
At first it all went rather well. The local towns folk knew who he was and would treat him kindly and with respect. With coin to spare, he had easy time finding places to sleep and eat and would ask merchants for a ride to next town. The ease at how it all went through only emboldened him to go further, outside of the borders of the duchy where his family was located, to reach the big port city and go on a real adventure.
Here in the big city, he could finally do things that he was never allowed to do back home. As a kid of a local high standing family, he would be pandered to and helped, and it just didn’t feel like any of his accomplishments were actually… his… but here, here he was treated as an equal, he could go and do things his way and finally do things he always wanted.
It took him a couple of days to settle in the city. He had enough coin to pay for a place to stay and the bustling streets and markets proved proved more than vast for him to explore and learn about, his coin welcomed in all those places of course. He really had fun, seeing all these new things, new cultures, languages and tongues he only learned from books, and of course people of all sorts he could meet and learn about.
One of those folks, a bear sailor, told him about the pawdventuring guild, and naturally, just like any young beastfolk pup, it enchanted his young mind with the promise of pawdventure and wonders. He was even so kind to show him around the market that was on the other side of this big city, so that young Dyl could get all he needed for his first quest at the guild and his first pawdventure.
And that is where his luck ran out. With a sudden jerk and strong arms grabbing him he was too confused and startled to even realize what was happening. The strange smelling cloth that was being pressed against his muzzle made him feel out of breath and in his panic he tried to do anything to call for help… In a moment he dropped his thoughts of being an adult and like any child wanted to just scream for someone to help him, but it was to no avail. Those big hands pulling him back and exposing his naked body. The way they touched and fondled him was something he never experienced before… It filled him with dread like he never knew before. Before he blacked out the last thing he could remember were those hands and being pulled into the dark alley, away from the crowded streets of the market, his muffled cries never heard by anyone there who was just few feet away…
Strays were dime and dozen; it was barely worth going through the effort of grabbing one to sell… why would anyone spend their coin on their rugged fur and sickly stature when they can just grab some local ones if they really need them? But a well-kept soft pup like this… that was another story, it was worth giving coin for. Dyl didn’t realize that the same things that kept him safe in towns near his estate were the same things that made him a perfect target for unsavory kind. Things that he found natural made him stand out like a sore thumb. Exotic well-kept fur was not something a stray pup would have, not to mention fancy looking and well-crafted expensive robes. Where folk of his realm saw him as a local noble, here he was seen as just an unattended wealthy brat. And while home people would look after him because he was of the local royals, here, nobody would beat an eye if he just got taken away… and that is exactly what happened on that day.
The bear was obviously not just a sailor, he worked in a more unsavory business of smuggling goods, including pups. He spotted Dylan even on his first day in the city, he got a tip about a lone noble brat traveling and was to be paid if he… disposed of him. Though even without the tip, Dyl was too easy to spot, and the bear already knew all the brats of the local nobles, a man in his line business had to after all… so he waited for his perfect opportunity. It would be a waste to just get rid of such a good-looking brat, he had other plans for him. A fine pup like that would make an even finer tailraiser and would sell for quite a hefty price. And If he sold him somewhere far away, he could even lie that he got rid of him for good and collect his other reward…
It was one lesson that Dyl had not learned from his books and would have to learn the hard way. Just one of many more lessons to come…
