What time do you plan to leave?”\n“Well, the funeral’s at ten in the morning tomorrow… Zach, Amina, and I made reservations at the Lakeside Inn in Crystal Lake. We haven’t heard much else, but we plan to call Mabel and her father to work out the other details.”\nJack then faces Zach. “And how are you handling this?”\nZach stops to look at the well-dressed jackalope. “Doing okay, I guess… But, I’m still a bit shocked from what happened.”\n“Can I ask you something?” Zach pauses to listen. “This fox left you at an orphanage; left you to rot. Yet, you wanted to give her your kidney, and now you plan to attend her funeral? Why?” Knocking on the door causes the robot and dragon to investigate. \n“We ‘made peace’ couple of days ago… She told me she’d be part of my life again if I helped her…”\n“And you believed that? Not to upset you, but in my opinion, I think this was rather foolish of you; saving the woman who had abandoned you, leaving you to a fate worse than death in your eyes. Do you really think this was all worth it?”\nZach sighs. “Look, I didn’t want to keep up this hate game… I just wanted normality for once, even if it meant trying to make a deal with the devil!”\nEcho, followed by Firework, walks up to the fox. “Zach, this came for you…” He holds up a package to him.\nZach takes it from the robot and examines the label. “It’s from Delilah…” He opens the parcel and pulls out a black, fuzzy box and a letter from it.\nMelissa takes a step toward him. “What does it say?” \nZach inspects the contents of the note before him: \nZach, \nI wanted to give you this in person, but I’m afraid the doctors say my time is running out, and I wouldn’t be able to live long enough to benefit from your kidney.\nHe starts opening the box and holds up a locket on a chain with an old picture of when he was a baby being held by Delilah in one hole with his biological father in the other. He continues reading:\nThis locket belonged to my grandmother, who gave it to my mother. My mother gave it to me… and I want to give it to you… my son…\nZach pauses, near crying as he examines the locket more. He stands and holds the piece of jewelry near Jack. “Yeah, you’re right, Jack… She was a cold-hearted fox…” Jack walks out into the hallway of the apartment. Yet, Zach continues into the letter.\nBy the time you read this, I will be gone. However, I have one favor to ask of you. Unfortunately, I never told any of my friends and associates in Crystal Lake about you or the events transpired in Furton. I have a reputation in the community that would be tarnished… if it became known I had a child as a minor and abandoned it. So, it would be better if…\nZach leans back with the chills up his spine as he finishes the sentence. \nYou didn’t come to the funeral.\nThe fox stands, drops the letter, and walks over to the table in disappointment. He leans against the wooden surface, unsure of what to do next. The kids and Amina look at him with concern. Cotton shares remorse as well.\nMelissa takes the note and reads the last thing Delilah had written:\nMay more success be with you.\n“She doesn’t want me there,” Zach says. \nThe rabbit looks up at the fox, sharing the same expression as the Amina, Echo, and Firework. “I’m sorry, Honey…”\n“I was going to give her one of my kidneys, and she doesn’t want me to ‘tarnish’ her funeral…” He holds the locket up. “And I’m supposed to keep this to remember her by? This is why it’s just stuff!” He throws the jewelry piece onto the ground, nearly smashing it to pieces, and storms out of the apartment. Outside in the gathering of the floor, he looks to Jack. “Hey, Jack!” The jackalope, sitting on one of the benches by the elevator and stairwell, looks up at him. “You missed the ‘best’ part of the letter!” \n“I did?” asks Jack.\n“My dead mother doesn’t want me to come to her funeral.” He occupies the spot beside the suited animal. “Her folks don’t know she had me with David and ditched me. So, it wouldn’t be good for her reputation.”\nJack sighs. “What can I say, Zach…?”\n“You were right…”\n“For once, I wish I wasn’t…” He leans forward. “Well, look at it this way; at least you got that witch’s gold, diamond-encrusted locket.” Zach’s eyes open wider, and he turns to the jackalope. “That thing was worth a fortune when I was a kid. I can’t imagine what it’s worth now!” \n“Um, about that, Jack… I think it’s gone down in value…” The jackalope looks at him with a puzzled look. \n\n","writing_bbcode_parsed":"Melissa answers the door once she hears knocking. “Daddy,” she utters. “Hey… Come in…” The jackalope enters the friends’ dwelling, seeing the two foxes pack suitcases with their essentials. “Thanks for volunteering to watch the kids.”
“It’s no problem, Darling,” says Jack. “Igor had informed me of everything.
