The fluorescent lights reflect off of the white tiles, making the hallways brighter than they normally would be. Echo and Firework tail behind him with backpacks against their spines as he follows an owl dressed in a tan leather jacket and matching boots. Round glasses sit on its beak while shielding the eyes with clear glass. They stop at the end in front of a chatty classroom, buzzing with conversations in low voices. \n“So, you have nothing to fear,” says the owl to Zach in a female tone. “My class and I are gracious. We will be kind to your children, so long as they do not break the rules.”\n“Do not worry, Ms. Hooters,” Zach explains. “Echo and Firework are well-aware of their behavior, and they shall be good when they come here.” He faces the kids. “Right, kids?” The robot and dragon do not answer, keeping their heads down in embarrassment. The fox looks back at the owl. “You won’t be getting any trouble from them. They’re usually well-behaved.” \n“Well, I can assure you that if my class does break any rules, they shall be disciplined for it. And if any incidents of bullying come up, there is zero tolerance for that.”\n“Thank you.” Zach turns to the robot and dragon. “I’m afraid this is where I leave you two. Be good and have a nice first day at school.” The fox turns and leaves, ambling back down the hall. Echo and Firework watch with sadness as he slowly disappears.\n“Come, Echo and Firework,” utters Ms. Hooters. “The other kids are eager to meet you.” They shift their gaze from their friend and follow the owl into the classroom. “Good morning, class!” she shouts. The children freeze and face her before yelling “Good morning, Ms. Hooters!” back. “Today we have some new students. They have come from the city of Buscity and have taken a while to get here. Please welcome our new classmates, Echo the Robot and Firework the Dragon!” The robot and dragon remain frozen, staring at the children at the desks as they hide themselves halfway behind the teacher with shyness. “They’re a little shy, so we must give them time to adjust.” She turns to the two kids behind her. “There are empty desks in the back/ Please take your seats.” Echo and Firework do as she commands, stepping with ease toward the back as the students eye them. As they sit in their new chairs, the teacher presses on with her speech. “Now, class. We will be continuing on with today’s lesson.” The robot and dragon focus on the teacher, yet feel insecure with the eyes of the other kids still fixed on them. They lean to each other and whisper about them, making both Echo and Firework uncomfortable.\n\n*** \n\nThe day moves on as the kids carry on with class before heading inside a big gym for their physical education class. “Good morning, class!” shouts a cheetah in a red sweat jacket and sweat pants. The class all yell back a “Good morning, Mr. Spots” to him, except for Echo and Firework. “Welcome back to physical ed! Hope you all have had a nice break and are ready to-” He notices the two kids in front. “Ah, well! I didn’t know we had new students coming to join us! And what be your names?” Echo and Firework stand frozen. “Come on, don’t be shy. I don’t bite.” They look at each other, then back to the teacher before introducing themselves. “It’s a pleasure to meet you both!” he utters enthusiastically. The big cat looks at the kids as a whole. “Now, since you all have been lazy and slouching around during the break, I’m going to get you all fit again! Behind me, I have all of the stations set up for a run you will all do. At each station, you’re going to rope-climb up to the top, then head to the monkey bars to get across a little “lake” below. Next, you’re going to shoot the basketball in the hoop. Once you’ve done that, proceed to the jump-rope and jump twenty times. I want you all to pick a station and head to it. You will repeat this until I blow my whistle, which then you will stop. Ready? Set!” He takes his whistle and blows on it. The kids scramble to their tasks. Echo goes to shooting the basketball first as Firework grabs onto the monkey bars. They cycle with the kids around, where Echo is at the monkey bars and Firework at the rope climb. The robot stands frozen before the suspended bars, white and pale with fear. Echo is unsure to use the gym equipment and wishes to back down, yet all the kids behind him rush him, forcing the robot to grab on and take his time. The dragon makes his way to the top on the ropes, smiling as he’s reached his goal. But just as he prepares to descend, he stops suddenly, tilting over like a tea kettle as his wing gets caught in the rope. Firework struggles to break free, which he soon does, yet begins to fall fast. His quick thinking causes him to use his wings and glad, however, the rapid flapping pushes him forward, making him fly out of control. Just as the robot is nearing the other side of the monkey bars, the dragon swoops in and picks him up. \n“Not again!” Echo spurts. The kids all stop and watch as the two soar through the gym. The robot clings onto Firework as they fly out of control and eventually crash into the basketball hoop. Firework’s tail gets a grip on the ring as he has Echo by his paws, holding him. \n“Ugh!” Firework grunts. “Echo heavy… Can’t… hold on…”\n“Don’t you dare let go!” shouts Echo.\n“Firework don’t plan on it!” The weight of the metal body the dragon carries pulls him further down, eventually to the point where his tail loses its grip and causes the two to crash onto the gym floor. All the other kids point and laugh at them as they stay lying on the ground, dazed from landing. \nThe gym teacher’s shadow looms over them. They look up at him with uncertainty, then become worried when they notice his clenched eyebrows and crossed arms. “If you think this is a period where you can fool around, then maybe some time out in the corner should set your thinking straight.” The two kids’ mouths bend into frowns.\n\n\n*** \n\nThe cafeteria drowns out the sounds of horns honking as the noises of chatty students fill the room. Echo and Firework, armed with trays, walk off the line together and look around for a place to sit at. \nThe dragon sighs. “Not good day… Nuh uh…”\nEcho scans his environment, looking for any vacant spots. “I don’t sense any empty space for us… Maybe the other kids will be nice to share?” Both the dragon and robot go up to one table, but they immediately shut them out. They try for another before getting shooed away. The two kids scan around, and have very little success. “Perhaps the kids are reluctant to allow us to sit at their tables… They must not like us…”\n“Firework right,” Firework utters. “School bad… Zach and Melissa don’t listen…”\nEcho places one hand on his shoulder and rubs, blue in sharing the dragon’s emotion. “I know you don’t want to be here… Neither do I… But, Zach is right… We need to make the best of everything while we’re here…” \n“Hey!” calls a boyish voice at them. The two kids turn to where the source is. Coming up to them is a pig with a brown backpack and goggles. “What are you two doing standing around? How about you come sit with us?” He smiles.\n“Us sit with you?” asks Firework. The pig nods. “Where sit?”\n“Come!” The pink animal leads the two friends to the back end of the cafeteria, where a panda and small bat sit. “We heard about you two flying over the city. What was it like?” Echo and Firework look away, not wishing to share any information regarding their incident. “Hey, it’s okay. There’s nothing to be ashamed of. You two are real cool. What are your names?”\n“I am Echo, artificial intelligence,” says Echo.\n“My name Firework,” Firework utters. \n“Pleasure,” the pig tells them. “I’m Hammy.” He points to the panda. “This is my friend, Preston. And the bat is Hayley.” Both Preston and Hayley wave and say hello to them.\n“So, you two are from Buscity?” asks Preston. “I hear that’s where the great company, Green Gadgets, is located.”\n“Correct,” Echo tells him. “I am from there. I left, however. I did not like being there due to the other robots belittling me.”\n“Firework same way,” the dragon spurts. “Firework left flock when flock abandoned Firework… Left and met friends in Buscity… Then moved for safety…”\n“We get you,” Hayley adds. “That’s how we each were until we became friends. You’re very much welcomed here.”\n“Don’t worry about those other kids,” Hammy adds. “They’re not too fond of new kids like you.”\nEcho changes to blue. “I don’t think Firework and I have a chance of making friends…”\n“Aw. It’s okay. We’ll be friends with you.” The pig turns to the other two. “Right, guys?” Preston and Hayley nod.\nFirework’s eyelids pull back more. “Aw, Firework love you guys. Make Firework happy.” His backpack beside him jumps and squeaks. “Oops…”\n“Whoa, what was that?!” Preston exclaims. \nEcho faces the dragon. “Did you just sneak Cotton into school?” \nFirework keeps a blank expression toward him. “Um… No…”\nEcho sighs. “Stop lying… I can see clearly through your backpack… Firework, do you want to get us into more trouble?”\n“Firework didn’t want to leave Cotton alone…”\n“What are you two talking about?” asks Hayley. “And what’s a “Cotton”?” Firework opens his bag a little, showing the purple fluff with yellow eyes, smiling. “Whoa, what?”\n“Cotton is our pet fluffball,” Echo explains. “We got him from Buscity, and he’s been with us for a while. Sorry, I have no idea what’s with-”\n“Don’t be,” Hammy interrupts. “That’s pretty cool you guys have a fluffball. Everyone wants one of those.”\n“Aw, he’s pretty cute,” Hayley says. “I love him so much! Just, don’t let the staff catch you with him.”\n“No plan to,” Firework tells her. “Cotton ours, not school.”\n“So,” Preston starts. “Do you two like superheroes? Hammy, Hayley, and I are into these rad characters that do a lot of cool things.” The robot and dragon look at each other before turning to the panda and nodding. “I can tell we’re going to get along just fine, then.” He and the others smile.\n\n","writing_bbcode_parsed":"<span style='word-wrap: break-word;'>Zach, wearing his work clothes, ambles down the long hallway line with doors into classrooms.
