The rabbit then grabs the handle, swivels it the same direction he did with the key in the lock, and pushes forward, opening the door. The gang enters a wide room and look around. To their right is a small living room area with one couch and two loveseats beside it. Over into the next room is the kitchen, separated by a plain drywall. A stove colored with grey sits beside a counter with a sink as the fridge, the same color as the stove, stands in the corner by the entryway. The fade in colors show the age of the counters and appliances. Behind the gang and across the kitchen area is where the bathroom resides, complete with a shower and bathtub combo, a toilet next to it, and a sink. Water drips onto the ceramic floor of the bath from the rusty showerhead above. Everyone gathers in the living room area. “Well, this place is a dump,” Melissa complains. “I mean, look at all of this; whoever was living here before probably wasn’t caring… I was expecting better…”\n“What can you do about it?” asks Zach. “It’s all we can afford right now. We’ll have to make do with that we have.”\nFirework looks around. “Where bedrooms? Firework sleepy.” \nEcho adds, “I cannot detect a bed anywhere around here. In fact, this is all the apartment has to offer according to my scanners.” Cotton looks around.\n“It’s a studio apartment,” Zach tells the kids. “There’s no bedroom.”\n“What?!” Firework turns to the fox. “Where Firework and friends sleep?!”\n“Relax,” Melissa says. “I’m sure the couch and loveseats transform into beds.” She walks over to examine the furniture. Pulling the flap stuck between the cushion, a set of irons spring out and stretch closer to the center of the room, revealing a mattress wide enough for two. “Oh good! They do. Better that than sleeping on the couch.” Echo activates the other one across from Melissa.\n“The large sofa doesn’t have a bed,” Zach utters, looking at the seats of the long, three-cushioned sofa. “Guess it’s just the two.”\n“So,” Amina starts. “Who’s sleeping where?” \n“It’s pretty obvious,” Melissa tells her. “Zach and I will share a cot while Firework and Echo have the other. Sorry, Amina.”\n“I don’t mind the long furniture. I’ve slept on harder surfaces before. What do we do in terms of food? Do you need me to hunt?”\n“No, that’s not necessary,” Zach assures her. “We can get food from the supermarket easily. We’re going to have to be careful with how much we eat, however.” \n“Why?” Firework asks. “Firework thought Melissa rich. Melissa have enough for food.”\n“Um,” Melissa begins, rubbing the back of her head. “Yeah… About that… I just spent a huge chunk of it for the train ride to Furton. Ticket fares aren’t exactly cheap… We also had to pay the application fees for citizenship status. Which means, we’re going to have to make money if we’re going to live here.”\n“We’ll need money for food, rent, and medical care,” adds Echo. “And we should also save some money to move up a tier when we get a chance.”\n“I’m going to need to search for a job,” Zach utters. “I just don’t know where to start…”\n“Hello?” calls a feminine voice from the entrance. The gang turn their heads to where the source originates and pinpoints it to a fennec fox, half Zach’s size, in a green top and bottom. “Um, hi… Are you new tenants…?”\n“Yes,” Melissa answers. “We just got here. You must be our new neighbor, Miss-”\n“Tara. I’m Tara the Fennec Fox.”\n“Well, nice to meet you, Tara,” Amina tells her. “You live here, too?”\n“I’m next door,” Tara tells him. “Apartment four twenty-one. May I come in?” The gang look at each other and nod to her, allowing the small fox to waltz in. “So, where do you guys come from?”\n“Buscity,” Melissa answers. “We just got here.”\nColors form in front of the gang, filling in a figure which appears to them, causing the others to flinch. The unknown shape turns out to be a chameleon, standing next to the fennec fox. “Yo, Tara!” The reptile utters, male in tone. “You didn’t tell me we’d have new neighbors!”\n“They just arrived,” Tara tells him. She turns to the group. “Oh, this is my boyfriend, Karma. Karma Chameleon.”\n“Hey Tara!” shouts a cat with a blue shirt and headphones, male as well. “Why didn’t you say you were going to greet the new neighbors?” He waves to the friends. “Hi! I’m Pod-Cat! I see you met Tara and Karma.”\n“Of course,” Zach says. “I’m Zach, and these are my friends.” He introduces them to the warthog. The others wave and say “hello” to them. \n“I must say, it’s quite a nice-looking place, despite it resembling a lot like ours.”\n“Well, it’s all we can afford as of right now,” Melissa adds. “And it’s all we can have for our status…”\n“So, we see,” Karma responds. “Many class “C” citizens struggle to maintain living. Not many of them make it in the city, sadly. However, we all do our best to work together and help one another. Whatever you guys need, we can try and help you in any way we can.” \n“We some work,” Zach states. “Do you know of anywhere that’s hiring?”\n “The Pawmart where I work are always looking for employees,” Karma utters. “Mostly store associates. It may not be a fancy job, but they get paid good money.” \n“Pawbucks is looking for some more baristas,” Tara adds. “I’m slaving there all the time and we’re short on paws.”\n“That could be something interesting for me actually.” Melissa turns to Zach. “I’ve always been going to Pawbucks coffee. I could get work there as a barista to help keep the money flowing.”\n“You don’t have to,” Zach assures her. “I’ll work as a store associate and get a steady income.”\n“Why don’t you both work?” Pod-Cat adds. “You’d both be making a living much easier.”\n“And saving some leftover cash can help bring us a step closer to affording better,” Echo implies. Cotton jumps and squeaks as a means of siding with the robot. Zach and Melissa become unsure of the situation.\nAmina walks up to the two. “It’ll be fine. I can watch the children as you both work. And as extra, we’ll go out to explore the city more to see what’s around. I’ll make sure they are safe.”\n“You sure about that, Amina?” asks Melissa. “We wouldn’t want you to get lost.”\n“Oh, there’s nothing to worry about,” says Pod-Cat. “I can help show them around. I know this city like the back of my paw.”\n“Then, it’s settled,” Zach begins. “Amina will watch Echo, Firework, and Cotton, and go with Pod-Cat. Melissa can head to Pawbucks to be a barista while I go apply to be a store associate for Pawmart.”\n“You sure about that, Zach?” Melissa asks. “You’d probably hate working in that department store. You’ll have to work with rowdy customers.”\n“It’s not like I’m going to be an adventurous hero,” he tells her. “Besides, I’m more worried about you guys than I am with my happiness. I’ll get work in Pawmart.”\n“Karma and I can take you both to our workplaces,” Tara says. “We’ll talk to our bosses about it.” Zach and Melissa thank them.\nFirework yawns. “Firework tired… Firework want sleep…”\n“Well, it is pretty late,” Melissa remarks. “It took us a while to get through all the paperwork in the government circle, as well as walking here. We’re probably going to have to do everything tomorrow.”\n“That’s fine,” Karma says. “We’ll wait for you to be ready at sunrise. Have a good night. Oh, and welcome to Furton.” The three animals leave the apartment and enter their own next door. The friends exchange goodnights to each other as they prepare themselves to sleep.
