Melissa then shuts the doors behind them after they’ve gathered into the foyer. “Is everyone hungry?” They respond to her immediately with their answer. “I’ll have the chef prepare us a fine meal. Daddy should be home in a bit.” As she leads the gang into the dining hall, she stops short and freezes. Her eyelids pull back as far as they can go, noticing the suited jackalope at the far end of the table, surrounded on both sides with Capital Corp. “Daddy!” The others halt in place beside her with shock as well. “I-I see you’re home earlier than I expected… How was work?” She awkwardly smiles.\n“Melissa,” Jack starts. “Where have you and Zach been? What are you and Zach doing with my robot? Who is that dragon and the red fox? Why do you have a purple fluffball? Melissa, what is going on?”\nThe rabbit keeps her eyes fixed on him. “Daddy, I can explain. You see, we were just-”\n“Have you and Zach no decency?! Steal from me and bring in some unfamiliar faces?! You should be ashamed of yourselves for-”\n“Sir,” Zach interrupts, stepping forth. “Don’t yell at us. It was not our faults. Let us explain to you what happened…” \n“Explain?! What is there to explain?! I can see clearly you have taken my robot from the facility when my back was turned! And how do I know the dragon and red fox are friendly?! They could be spies!”\n“Daddy…” Melissa begs. “It’s not what you think… I-”\n“I don’t want to hear it!” Jack stands and points to her. “I want you-”\n“Jack, please!” Zach utters. “We had no intentions to steal!”\n“Why are you defending her?” asks Jack, giving him a glare. “What reason do you have?”\n“Don’t put the blame on Melissa and Zach, Master,” Echo says to Jack, taking a step forth with blue as his emotional color. “I was not happy in Green Gadgets… Every repair you made from the damages done by the other robots weren’t enough to really fix any problems. I was not welcomed, praised, or appreciated. You have designed and built me to have qualities like no other robot. You have given me a pragmatic mind, one with feeling and emotion to better suit my environment. I left the facility myself… So please, yell at me.”\n“Firework mean no harm,” Firework adds, ears drooping as he comes forth as well. “Echo find Firework and brought Firework to Zach and Melissa. Firework felt alone before Zach, Melissa, and Echo take Firework in. Flock ignore Firework because Firework annoyance to them… Firework share pain with friends… Firework share blame, too.”\n“I will stand beside my new friends,” Amina implies. “My tribe has banished me, pushing me from my family and friends for being a runt. These good souls here have told me what they endured in their lives. They do not deserve any hell you give them, for they know what it’s like to be belittled. I stand for them, and I shall defend them.” Cotton joins in, snuggling between Echo and Firework. \n“All these other beings beside us have suffered the same way we have,” Zach states. “Melissa and I couldn’t just leave them after they tagged along with us… Please… Be considerable… You don’t want to do this.” Jack stands up from his chair while the others stare at him.\nAnne grabs the jackalope by the shoulder, causing him to stop and turn to her. “Boss, please… Don’t do anything harsh…”\nBella leans closer to the jackalope. “Is there anything you want us to do, Boss?” Jack shows her the palm of his paw, ordering her not to. He then gets up and walks toward the gang, but they notice he passes them and leaves the room. “Boss?” \n Charlie points to where the jackalope has exited. “What’s gotten into him? I’ve never seen him walk away without addressing a problem before…”\n“I’m not sure,” Roger adds. “This is something new… and that’s not good…”\n“We better go and see if he’s okay,” Anne suggests. She and the rest of Capital Corp wander off, tracing the jackalope’s path.\n“Oh dear…” Melissa places her paw on her head, dropping the slime plush in the process. “I… I…”\n“Melissa.” Zach puts his paws on him. “You okay?”\n“I don’t know… Daddy’s never walked out like that before … He usually yells at me and then tells me I’m grounded, ordering me to my room… But, he’s just walked away… I’m worried…”\n“Maybe some food will help us,” he suggests. “We should get plenty of rest, too… It’s been a long, unusual day…”\n“Where will we sleep?” asks Echo. Firework and Amina agrees with him. \n“Jack is letting me stay in a guest suite,” Zach tells them. “I have enough room for you guys to bunk in.” Melissa stares at the floor, rubbing her arm with worry.\n\n*** \n\nDarkness shrouds the entire room. Echo and Firework are sound asleep at the foot of the bed. The grey dragon is curled up with his metal buddy as Cotton sleeps between them. Amina is on her side, sleeping motionlessly in a heavy dream in contrast to Zach, who tosses and turns, struggling with his internal thoughts. Unable to sleep peacefully, the orange fox opens his eyes and pushes himself to a sitting position. He remains there for a few seconds before getting up and heading to the bathroom. Facing the sink, he turns the taps on, collects water in his paws, and splashes it on his face. After assaulting his head with the clear liquid from the sink, the fox looks directly into the mirror at his other self. Staring for a couple of seconds, his ears twitch and he turns. The sounds of footsteps and low whispers attract his attention. He ambles toward the door cautiously, reaching out to the handle when he’s knocked back onto the floor from the wooden entryway being kicked open. The fox raises his arm to shield himself from the light, squinting his eyes to get a better look at what’s in front of him. To his surprise, he sees the four infamous animals from his past before they rush in and strike at him; throwing punches and kicking his body as they hurl insults at him. All the fox can do is curl up and scream with fear. \nZach opens his eyes quickly and springs up into a sitting position fast, breathing heavily after a gasp. He frantically scans his surroundings, seeing his friends still paralyzed with sleep. The fox pushes himself up and walks to the door. Leaving the room, he leans over the balcony wall and looks down at the foyer where he and his friends entered from. Zach lets out a sigh. His ears stick up fast, hearing the sounds of ambling footsteps coming closer to his position. The fox turns to the source quick and takes notice of the grey bunny standing before him, dressed in her pink pajamas. “What are you doing out of bed, Melissa?”\n“I couldn’t sleep,” she answers him. “You?”\nZach turns back to the foyer below. “Me neither… I’ve had another nightmare…”\nMelissa leans on the wall next to him, joining him. “Do tell… What happened?”\nZach lets out a sigh. “I was knocked down… Then Team Rescuers were standing over me, kicking and beating me as they belittled me…” Melissa wraps her arm around him to comfort. “I always thought they were my friends… Ever since I was introduced, all I wanted to do was hang out with them… They were the only people I had… And their occupations as heroes rubbed off on me… It reignited my passion to help others… But, they wouldn’t train me… They didn’t see me as being one of them…” He feels the rabbit’s paw circle around against his back before turning to her. “How come you couldn’t sleep?”\n“I was still worried about what happened in the dining room… What my dad did wasn’t anything he would normally do when he was angry. When something doesn’t go his way, he usually takes it out on me, blaming me for doing the things that set him off… I thought he was going to punish me, but he just walked away… It’s not normal for him…”\n“Melissa, do you love your dad regardless of the things he did to you?”\n“He takes care of me, despite ignoring me and putting the blame on me for everything… I wouldn’t call it unconditional love, but he’s there for me…”\n“I never had unconditional love, or any love… Everyone thought I was a flawed fox… They would stay away from me because they were afraid I would do something bad… I thought when I would be adopted, I would be loving and loyal to those who brought me home… That never happened… I then developed a crush on Cindy because of some similarities we had, but she never wanted to be with me… She pushed me away and broke my heart… After everything in Heroto, I felt like I was never loved…”\n“But you are loved.” Melissa places her paw on top of his, causing him to turn to her. “You don’t need Cindy when you have me.” \n“I don’t know if I can go back to sleep… My memories keep me from shutting my eyes…”\n“You just need a little comfort,” Melissa suggests. “Why don’t you bunk in with me for tonight?” Zach looks at the door of his guestroom where the others snooze. “Don’t worry about them. They’re comfortable and in dreamland already.”\nZach looks back to Melissa. “Are you all right with me sleeping with you?” \n“Of course,” says Melissa. “Isn’t it warming to have a lover sleeping with you?”\n“I never knew… Cindy would always kick me out of her room whenever I went in…”\n“Well, I’m not Cindy, and I’m telling you it’s all right for you to sleep with me. Besides, I feel like I need someone to cuddle.”\n“O-okay.” Zach follows her back into her room. Darkness discolors the pink-painted walls and fuzzy purple carpet. The two get into the queen-sized bed and put the covers over each other. \nMelissa places her paw and head against the fox’s fluffy torso, clinging onto him. Zach asks if she is comfy. Melissa responds with a “yes” and asks him the same, which he responds with a similar answer. \n“Melissa?” The rabbit listens to his request. “Did you have fun today?”\n“I did… Did you have fun?”\n“I suppose. Do you think we could do this tomorrow?”\n“Do what? What do you mean?”\n“Maybe go out again? Maybe see a movie? Or perhaps go to an art exhibit? How about a zoo?”\n“Asking me out on a date, Handsome Fox?” Zach remains speechless, blushing with pink. Melissa giggles. “I’d love to.”\n“I also think we should get to know our new friends, too. You know, bring them along… You okay with that?”\n“Whatever you want.
