I filled my frame with green sand and then pushed the original into it, stopping once I got to the bulges on the sides, thus avoiding the overlap issue and allowing me to cleanly pull the original out without messing up the claws.\n\nThe cast still wasn't anywhere close to perfect - I ran out of gas and as a result, my mold ended up sitting way too long and drying out a bit (temperature was high 80s today) plus I still didn't have a large enough crucible, hence that line through the palm, which marks where the first pour stopped and the second began, although I actually like the look of it.\n\nIt's pretty rough and the sides need a lot of grinding - I may still try to break it down and remelt it but I don't know, after all of the failed attempts I'm already feeling kind of attached to my first semi-success - might keep it anyway.\n\nWeight right now is just shy of nine pounds so figure eight and a half once I cut off the excess from the vents and take a grinding wheel to the sides.\n\nStill, I'm just thrilled to finally have a real success even a half-assed one like this.","description_bbcode_parsed":"Been trying to pull this one off for a while now and finally figured out the trick to doing it.

Previously I had been putting it into the frame, packing the green sand on top of it and then trying to remove it but due to the sides having bulges to them and the curve of the claws I always ripped up my mold.

Then I remembered something I had tried back when I first started casting and didn't know what I was doing, but had actually worked -
