"description": "Father sits Junior down in the living room, on the futon in front of the wallscreen. Mother and Hatchling are strategically absent, though they're not aware of this strategy. Few children are sit down to have The Talk™ at six months old, but Junior is precocious even among dragonets, who are notoriously fast developers - talking at six months is unsurprising, The Talk™ however is. This probably isn't The Talk™ your parents gave you, however; Junior wants to be a lapdragon, and Father is trying to talk him out of it, and has chosen to attack Junior's hazy understanding of the process (\"…they just unhook them somehow, right?\") with some very frank description. (\"…like, with knives.\") The problem comes from the fact that Father volunteered as one of our Reindeer™ just before Junior hatched, and Junior looks up to him - Mother's quiet pride (and amusement, and maybe a few other things Junior hasn't yet picked up on) in Father dedicating a month to raising money for the Red Cross have shaped his opinion of both his father, and his father's life choices. \n\nThis, on its own, was not enough to make up his mind, however. The situation was caused when Junior stumbled on some printed materials suggesting that pediatric desexing, like its less controversial cousin pediatric declawing, is both reasonable and appropriate. While a minority opinion among the veterinary community, enough practitioners will perform the procedure with parental consent that if you also subscribe to the view that if a dragon is to be fixed, shortly before six months is the ideal point in time based on analysis of the developmental timeline, you can find someone to do the deed. Unfortunately from his parents' point of view, Junior has realized that he is a \"fix-month old\" and desperately wants to be sterilized (and lapped, though he may have unintentionally conflated the two) \"before [he] miss[es his] chance.\" While he isn't yet branded, he has been, for the last month or so, drawing on the pawprint with permanent marker whenever he can sneak time with one to reapply it as it fades - much to his parents' chagrin. Also, his tendency to repeat lines from alternative health publications such as \"Two's Late - Why Wait?\" and \"Avoid Problems Later - Fix Them Early\" without regards to anyone else present at the time has provided a source of amusement (among bystanders) and exasperation (among his parents). He has also taken to leaving less-than-subtle hints and reminders lying about to be found; last night Mother found an ad clipping sticking out of a magazine on her pillow - the article was entitled \"From Changing Table to Operating Table: Why when ditching diapers is the best time to fix 'em\" and the bookmark advertised a veterinary practice offering a \"Breeders' Special: Have Yourself Fixed and We'll Fix Your Kits While We're At It, Free of Charge.\" Before that, it was a joint PETA/Planned Parenthood/Greenpeace collaboration promoting a roving \"Snipping Drive\", promising that \"Kits Cut In First Year Happier, Healthier (And Cuter!)\" for \"$20 All Day\" left on the dinner table with \"Please?\" scrawled on the margin in red marker.\n\nThe discussion isn't going terribly well for Father, however. Junior was implanted with a second-generation microchip tag at his first vet visit the morning after he hatched, which he recognizes hasn't traumatized him. He is not, generally speaking, even aware of the lump above his ear unless he pauses to think about how the seemingly magical home-automation technology he enjoys works. Second, his parents had him declawed and reclawed in silicone (just before brass became broadly available), which they consider suitable \"training wheels\" for having fishhooks for fingernails. He doesn't really remember the period before he had them done, though he's aware this isn't the natural state of affairs, and most of the scars from before that point have since faded; the gouged furniture hasn't healed, however. His parents have stopped scolding him for drawing blood and sharpening his claws on the sofa, since replaced with the flat futon 'rug', at least, perhaps contributing to his preference for the modified life. Third, without yet knowing the subtext of the word, he's played the hypocrisy card - Father is, after all, a retired Reindeer™ who traded his efforts and reproductive organs directly for the 'privilege' of their removal, who bunked in close quarters with other like-minded individuals for a month, visited there very nearly every day by Junior and Mother who found the circumstances generally pleasant; Junior was sometimes turned loose in the park across the street to play with the visiting families of other local Reindeer™, while Mother played with her husband in his stall (though the young one was never privy to this fact; he just knew that his mother was always happy to see his father). Knives or not, he knows his father volunteered for the experience and prospered by it (though he has not yet considered that his mother may have helped to prompt that volunteering). \n\nEven if he isn't too comfortable with the scalpels and scissors aspect, he knows he tried it once, when he was reclawed, and isn't terrified of the concept, and recognizes that if he's not, there's a reason for this. (This is, after all, a gifted dragonet!) What he doesn't know is that he's about due for having his claw implants resized, and that having him fixed at that time would be a trivial afterthought of a surgical procedure if he'll already be anaesthetized. He also doesn't know that his parents recognize this, and some nights are discussing whether their bright little child is actually capable of knowing what he wants at this age. While not trivial to reverse, such a thing is possible, and this nagging fact has kept them from simply dismissing his pleas out of hand.\n\n----------\n\n(After drawing \"Bested\", I tried to figure out what sort of situation would produce that kind of dragonet. This is what I came up with.)",
