"description": "Poorly drawn and poorly scanned.  I'll go over these in pen, and scan them without using the sheet-feeder, and that'll fix both.  But they're interesting enough to post them now, in this state.\n\nI've always known the UP's insignia incorporated a collar, a laurel crown, and a pawprint, but this is my first attempt to work those elements into something coherent.  This isn't really the press logo, the ones they use in print, but in the monochrome outlines available in a stud-stamp, this is how they work those elements into their markings.  Given the fact that most dragons will be branded before being registered as pets, the old brand doesn't necessarily match the rotation -- they didn't start with a really solid style guide when they started applying these, there are multiple \"correct\" configurations that you can expect to encounter in the field, however the collar-and-registration-number \"stud stamp\" will pretty much always be applied below the pawprint portion, in a position such that it's designed to be read while the dragon is standing.  The registration number is applied using a numbering scheme used in the real world, and optimized for recognizability at a distance; their style closely matches the real-world BLM's mustang registration system.\n\nAlso, the 'Shoppe regularly goes to court to defend their (heh) brand integrity; the pawprint brand has specific meaning within contract law as well.  As a first step in becoming a lapdragon, the signature on the page isn't considered by the company what's binding -- the stamp on your ass is.*  So if you're sporting a pawprint on your keister, and you're not at the very least neutered and declawed, in their eyes that's not cool.  *(Technically the signature is binding, but at that point, you're signing an agreement that no work will be done to you until you've been branded, but that no chickening out will be recognized afterwords - since for large portions of the process you'll be under the mind-altering effects of powerful anesthesia…  There are three benefits:  They know who's in the queue at their hospitals, and who's there to watch, they know that you're willing to get work done, since they typically only brand conscious individuals and without painkillers (freeze branding isn't very painful, fortunately!), and if you're squeamish about needles, but desire the end result, they can be willing to hold you down while they work and you've already consented to such treatment, and anyone who sees that brand can be sure you're a safe lay.)\n\n[q]Regulation:  Regulation lapdragons are those who meet the criteria set forth by the Bodyshoppe in their trademarks.  A “regulation” lapdragon is required to be sterilized and declawed, although specifics have varied over time.  Males generally require castration, though females’ sterilization may optionally preserve the uterus.  Since the introduction of Siliclaws to the market, dragons equipped with digital implants lacking cutting edges or sharp points are “declawed enough” to meet regulation.  Contrary to popular belief, a nose ring is not required, though there has been discussion of amending the regulation code to require defanging once adult eyeteeth have grown in, given the de facto near-ubiquity of the practice.  In addition, initial versions of the regulation code did not require permanent unique identification of any form; however, in 2044 ear-tagging was rolled out as an alternative to voluntary microchip implants to aid in patient tracking, and retired the same year when microchips were made part of the code.  Any untagged lapdragon presenting at a Bodyshoppe facility will be injected with a microchip and its ID will be registered with their medical record and keeper.\n[/q]\n\nThe problem lies with that stance on what the brand means, and the increasing desire to breed more pets.  The pawprint is also the universally recognized declaration that \"I'm a pet, please treat me like one\".  The compromise has been to embed a sex symbol in the middle of the pawprint - in essence, \"I'm intact, but I'm still a pet, so please treat me like one with the capacity to make more little ones.\"\n\n\"TAU\", or Talking Animal University, needed a university crest.  Also, I've discovered something about equestrianism - horses are traditionally handled almost exclusively from their left.  If this unconscious tradition persisted, then it's a good thing the pawprint is on the right -- that's something for the world to see, not the pet's keeper.  Which lead to the concept that things for the keeper to see go on the left, and things for the world to see go on the right.  (\"Make sure you get my good side\" jokes in three, two, one…)  That includes anything that might be considered bragging rights… like expensive professional [s]brainwashing[/s] [s]indoctrination[/s] training, especially while such is scarce and valued by fanciers.\n\nTAU has another important role in this story -- by decoupling pets' training from explicit fetishy sex, they took a lot of the stigma out of pethood-as-lifestyle.  Concepts like \"thirdparent\" emerged from their classrooms.  They invented ways to adopt an especially close friend into a traditional family model, without necessarily giving them input into child-rearing decisions for example.  And it was these squeaky-clean classes, and the reputation that talking pets got as a result, that allowed particularly dedicated but underaged dragons to participate in pethood - though parents may be thinking \"It's just a phase\" or \"They'll get tired of it soon\" at the time, and the vast majority of these underaged pets made a lateral transition within the same family, rather than being adopted by another to complete the new-pet-experience.  Unfortunately, a lot of them enjoyed the experience, especially the ones adopted out.  (Though typically, this was never formalized, and in fact the \"adoptive\" family were close family friends who were already trusted with the parents' kid, and who lived nearby.)  This also helped establish the way dragons are treated in public schools, because typically they wouldn't even change classes, and with only occasional exceptions (PE, for example) wouldn't be treated any differently than any other pupil.  Even in the born-as-pets crowd, this tradition of a rigorous education continues…  Though private schools for pet dragons, which incorporate the indoctrination into the core curriculum, have been founded, they tend to have even higher academic standards - both in order to keep themselves out of regulatory hot water, they have to be elite schools, as well as those who can afford such schooling having such expectations.\n\nI'm not sure if TAU operates one such school, but it wouldn't particularly surprise me.  In spite of this sounding sketchy as hell, they are a pretty ethical corporation… but they're still a corporation.  \n\nPosted using PostyBirb",
