What Are The Odds ? Bob was digging through a pile of towels trying to find a couple more that didn't smell so moldy. They were mostly pretty gross. He decided on one of them, it wasn't too bad. It would only be used for a short time and then tossed anyway. Felix had found a couple old sweaters. Bob and Felix brought their stuff back to the shed. Bob carefully placed and positioned the old towel on the floor where he thought was best. Ugh, Bob felt another cramp. He still was a bit surprised that he actually went through with all this again. He sure got a lot of exercise in just pushing his luck. Everything seemed to be happening faster this time. He felt even bigger than last time, but thought he had a couple more days. He was already leaking the bloody liquid. It seemed like things were happening maybe too fast. He was a little worried something might be wrong but he thought that last time and everything worked out. Bob yelped again, the pain was getting worse. Felix was licking Bob's belly trying to soothe him. It shouldn't take too much longer Bob thought, or at least he hoped. Finally after what seemed like forever the first little fox started to come out, Bob stared at the sack, been here before he thought. He ripped the sack open and pulled out the little fox with barely a second thought. This little fox was a male. While he was licking this kit he thought this little fox seemed smaller than the kits from last time. The next kit was a female and once again also was slightly smaller, he was sure of it. Why were they smaller? Bob was slightly concerned though they seemed to be fine otherwise. As he watched the third kit come out he could tell something was different about this one, he ripped the sack open and while licking this fox he did a double take, there was something different about this little female kit's coloring. Was it possible? Even with weak color vision he could tell this fox had no coloring at all except for the birth liquid. Albino was the word, It blew his mind, what are the odds? The only way they could have an albino kit is if they were both carriers of the mutant albino gene. One in four odds of albino kits. Felix stared at the kit incredulously. Bob would give Felix a basic explanation later. Bob was very concerned about this kit, albino foxes tend to have a tougher life, their noses sunburn and they tend to have poor eyesight. They also have a bit tougher time hunting. Bob gave out a worried sigh. He didn't have a whole lot of time to worry as the next kit was ready to emerge. Four now Bob thought, more than last time, if only he knew what he was in for. Bob wasn't sure if that was all, he still felt a bit queasy. Felix and Bob snuggled together for a little while. Bob was adjusting the kits, "uh oh, I think there is more" Bob said as he got into position to push out another kit. Jeez they just keep popping out Bob thought. "Hey Felix, you want this placenta?" Bob joked, he was tired of choking those things down. Bob could barely get any rest before number 6 was on its way. He couldn't believe it, he was running low on nipples. He was starting to get the mogwai got wet vibes. He still didn't feel quite right, Felix tried to help clean up the kits, Bob was appreciative of any help he could get. They both got about an hour of snoozing in, Bob really thought he was done. You have got to be shitting me he thought. "Felix, it's not over yet", Bob said as he pushed out number 7. One spare nipple, Bob was getting nervous. He was reminded of those crossword lottery tickets on the rare occasion you won a lot of money, you kept getting more and more words uncovered. The most he ever got was 7 words for 50 bucks. He barely got any rest before he was going to win a hundred. He was gasping with absolute exhaustion as he pushed out number 8. Another albino female. He actually felt empty this time and the queasiness was basically gone, but he had been fooled before. He was out of nipples now, he really didn't want to have to ration nipples. He curled up with the eight little foxes. Felix plopped down next to him and snuggled in. Bob finally got some much needed rest. Bob woke up a few hours later feeling fairly decent considering his efforts earlier. He looked at the kits, exactly four females and four males. And of course the two albino kits. Bob had been joking when he mentioned having 8 kits, but it really does happen. He wondered what is the odds of two foxes coming together both carriers of the albino gene. He had no idea where the hell he came from but he had seen Felix's family, none of them were albino. Just one of his parents must have been a carrier. Bob got up and detached the little foxes from the nipples, Felix took over as a heat source as Bob went to do his business and get a drink of water. He felt so much better after that but the worry was still there, with this many kits it could be hard for them all to survive. The albino thing was another complication. He had to stop the worrying. Bob came back and reattached all the kits to nipples. Felix ran off to do his business and maybe hunt. Bob closed his eyes.
