"writing": " As the old, decrepit bus pulled away, leaving a lingering cloud of half-burned diesel and soot in its wake, the young Vulpine sneezed delicately and waved a black gloved paw before his muzzle – trying to dissipate the haze. Again he sneezed, and flattened his triangular ears as best he could – but the stiff ear holes in his Akubra hat just wouldn't allow it. As his vision cleared, he looked up and down the road, feeling the relentless heat baking down on his shoulders and the thin shirt he wore.\n\n Heat built on heat, the merciless sun belting down and feeling like it would surely cook the fox where and when he stood – already the mirages formed in the distance as he stood beside his dented and scuffed suitcase, his amber eyes squinting at the brightness. As he reached down and grasped the cracked leather handle of his suitcase, he uttered a sharp hiss as the leather seared the paw pads on his palm and fingers, then winced and hefted the case before turning about and spotting the welcoming shade of an outback Australian Pub.\n\n*\n\n Behind the bar, a grizzled old Cattle Dog wiped down the bar with an ancient rag, then he grinned lopsidedly and nodded courteously to the young Fox.\n\n “G'day mate!” Grunted the Dog.\n\n “Hello...” Stammered the nervous young fox, as he set down his suitcase and sighed in relief at the cooler temperatures. “Is it always this hot out here...”\n\n “Hot?” Laughed the Cattle Dog, as he grinned wider. “Son, this isn't hot, when the Galah's take flight and burst into flames, and even the sun itself packs it in - “\n\n Staring dumbfounded, the young Vulpine swallowed, the pale fur on his throat rippling.\n\n “Stone the flaming crows - “ Chuckled a Kelpie sitting at the bar. “Son? Pay this old mutt no mind, he's having a flaming lend of ya, he can smell a new-blood, the names Red, that there...” He gestured to the Cattle dog behind the bar. “That's old Bluey...now, we don't get many of your kind out here – pull up a chair and have a beer – on me...”\n\n*\n\n As midday dragged on to late afternoon, and more beer than was safe, was consumed, Red and Bluey made a firm friendship with the shy young Fox, whose name was Caleb. Red and Bluey exchanged glances, then shrugged and snickered as the intoxicated Vulpine slumped further and further onto the bar.\n\n “So, Caleb – what brings you to the back of buggery...” Red grinned and gently sat the fox back up.\n\n “Ish gonna go work with...” Slurred Caleb as he grunted and blinked. “Ish gonna work with this schallion and...”\n\n Red and Bluey grinned wider, then gently guided Caleb to the nearest booth and between them, more poured than manoeuvred, the drunk Vulpine into the booth, where he collapsed over the table and snored.\n\n “Young fella can't hold his liquor worth a damn - “ Red snickered good-naturedly. “Old Silvermane will like him...”\n\n Bluey grinned and chuckled, then nodded. “He will...that he will...”\n\n*\n\n Next morning, Caleb awoke with a snort and gurgled, dragging a black gloved paw over his eyes and muzzle, his head thumping and every muscle in his body aching.\n\n “Well, good morning sleeping beauty - “ Bluey grunted as he smirked and set a large pint glass filled with water before the Vulpine.\n\n “So...thirsty...” Caleb murmured, and weakly pawed at the glass, his slender fingers barely able to curl around it.\n\n “Go easy there son,” Bluey snickered. “Red and I are most impressed – Red owes me fifty dollars, didn't think you'd last that long and - “\n\n Caleb moaned and gulped down the water, before pushing the empty glass back across the table towards the Cattle Dog. “Another please...”\n\n “Oh, you'll get plenty more – can't have the young kit turning up for his first day, suffering a hangover...” Come a loud snort and the unmistakable clop of hooves on the dusty timber floor.\n\n “Well, speak of the stallion, and he shall arrive! Silvermane you overgrown colt, how the hell are ya mate?” Bluey snickered. “Look what I found all hot, bothered and bedraggled outside – this scrawny lump belong to you?”\n\n Caleb moaned and his muzzle dropped into his gloved paws and he squeesed his eyes shut, triangular ears flattening.\n\n “Mister Silvermane – I...sir - “ Caleb stammered, then slid from the booth and staggered to where the large stallion stood, hands on his trousered hips and staring down at the Vulpine with a look of bemusement and mild annoyance.\n\n “Pah, I'm no Sir - “ Silvermane grinned, his black lips curling in a widening smile, then he reached out and took the smaller fox's paw in his and squeesed it so tightly, Caleb swore the equine was going to crush it.\n\n “Rest easy young fella,” Silvermane chuckled. “Red and Bluey are a pair of louts – they love nothing more than finding some new-blood and giving him the treatment, you're not the first one, and you won't be the last – call it a 'welcome to the outback indoctrination' – since you're still standing – of a sort – and not thrown on the trash heap, I'm guessing you did alright for a young bloke.”\n\n “Flaming oath he did, for a Fox, he can go alright ya colt, he's a good bloke. Didn't decide to decorate the floor and - “\n\n Silvermane reached out and clamped a large paw onto the grinning Cattle Dog's muzzle and held it shut.\n\n “Come on pup – lets get you back to the station and get you cleaned up. If Red and Bluey think you're alright, then you're alright by me – welcome to the back of buggery son – and I hope you're a fit young fella, as I got a few thousand jobs lined up...” Silvermane laughed, then slapped Caleb on the back in a friendly manner, nearly knocking the hungover fox to the floor.\n\n “What...what about - “ Caleb murmured, then started reaching for his back pocket.\n\n “Mate, I won't hear of it - “ Bluey snickered. “You're alright, feel free to get a bit more experience under your belt, and come back any time, the bar is always open...”\n\n*\n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n \n\n",
