The quiet and humble apartment was in the inner city and despite the hardship it was a home filled with love. The Martinez household was a mixed-species with the father being an ocelot and the mother being a rat and this was inverted with the children. The quiet of the morning was broken by an ocelot cub, Ximena, making a racket as she ran down the stair followed more delicately by her brother Jose. Ximena crashed into the couch enough to knock it back a bit as her brother climbed onto the seat next to her. Both were eager for the start of their show. The TV was flipped on.\n\nThe old CRT whined as it came to life. Jose cycled through the channels until he landed on the one he was looking for. The Public Broadcaster showed the title cards thanking the sponsors of the show for their contributions. The logos faded from the screen as the upbeat theme of the show began to play. A watercolor painting of a giant tree in the middle of a busy city appeared on the screen as the music began. ``Sebastian's Magic Tree'' faded onscreen before the camera zoomed in on the door of the painting. The video cut to a wide shot of a large livingroom-kitchen space decorated with strange and colorful furniture and props. \n\nThe camera panned to the left and a group of pre-teens ran into the set. As each one feel through the door their names appeared on screen. Emily the Rabbit, Theo the Deer, Oscar the Beever, Milo the Fox, Luna the Lynx, and Max the Wolf. \n\nThe kids all crashed onto their massive couch at once and knocked it over prompting an adult tiger, Sebastian, to come down a set of stairs in the background and shake his head while giving a comical look to the camera. The show's logo appeared again on the lower third and the camera faded to black.\n\nThe scene opened to the kids playing a board game on the floor of the living room with Sebastian cooking in the kitchen. The kids are all having a good time, except for Emily. Luna turned to her friend who was clearly upset. ``What's wrong, Em? I've never see you down when we're playing a game together'' she asked and put a hand on her friend's shoulder.\n\nEmily pulled her knees against her chest and tucked in. ``My older sister didn't come home from school yesterday. When I asked my mom about it she said that my sister got `vored'. As this was going on Sebastian walked over to the group while he was stirring a bowl of pancake batter. ``What's the matter bacche, what's got you down Emily?'' Sebastian asked, his catchphrase being sprinkling Hindi into his dialogue.\n\nTheo stood from the game and spoke first. ``Emily is down because her sister got `vored', whatever that means'' he said.\n\nSebastian gave a knowing nod and knelt down with the kids to get on their level. ``Okay kids, you know how there are predators and prey in the world?'' Sebastian asked and the group of kids answered affirmatively. ``Predators and prey come in all shapes and sizes. But, one thing that all predators have in common is that they can eat animals. Most can only eat smaller mammals but some can eat mammals the same size or even bigger. Predators can eat prey for a lot of different reasons, sometimes because they love their prey and really want to get close to them and sometimes it's just because they're hungry''.\n\nOscar had grown a sad look on his face. ``But doesn't that mean the prey goes away forever?'' he asked looking up at his mentor.\n\nWith a warm smile on his face Sebastian responded. ``Yes, but that's part of life. Since the beginning of life on this planet predators and prey have had this relationship, it's as natural as the sun and stars'' the mentor explained which was met by murmurs of agreement from the kids gathered, which was again loud enough for the audience to hear.\n\nThe kids and the adult all stood up together in unison. The actor playing Emily had a momentary streak of fear on her face before getting back in character. ``I wonder what it's like, being eaten'' she said trying to stay in character but her voice cracking a bit. The prey in the cast were also starting to crack a bit but it's not as noticeable. The predators in the cast had a different reaction with Milo and especially Max getting really excited, Luna was a bit hesitant.\n\nBefore Emily could finish speaking Max blurted out ``I can eat you Emily, you're my friend and I would be honored to''.\n\n``Whatcha say, Emily?' Milo said, giving her a nudge in the shoulder.\n\nThe rest of the kids joined in on encouraging Emily to let herself get eaten with a clear line between who was and wasn't acting. \n\nSebastian knelt down next to her and rested his massive hand on her shoulder. ``Emily, it's your choice, no one can make you offer yourself as a meal. I know Max would feel really good if he ate you''.\n\nEmily thought about it while making an exaggerated thinking pose. She returned to normal posture and said ``Okay, you can eat me Max'' she answered sounding calm but with an obvious fear smile on her face. Emily then hugged and said her goodbyes to her friends while sad music played in the background. Sebastian and Max walked off to the side and had a conversation the audience couldn't hear. \n\nOnce all of the goodbyes were said Emily and Max stood facing each other. Max wax clearly very excited while Emily tried her best to keep a brave face. The wolf removed his shirt to reveal his bit of paunch and picked up Emily. Sebastian was standing nearby to guide the wolf through the process.\n\nThe rabbit looked like she was screaming as she was shoved into the wolf's maw but the audio was cut from the broadcast. Emily's face was in the back of the mouth with most of her body hanging out. ``Okay Max, eating a rabbit is easy. While you have her in your mouth I want you to appreciate and savor her flavor. She gave herself to you and I want you treat her properly'' Sebastian explained. Max looked like he wasn't listening. He was new at this but thanks to the multiple children of the crew who ``volunteered'' as rehearsal meals Max wouldn't have any issues.\n\nThe camera panned and zoomed to get a good side profile of Max as he ate. A skilled use of focus allowed the Standard Definition camera to capture some detailed bulges of the bunny. \n\n``Be careful, if you hold her in your mouth too long you'll run out of breath. Better swallow her'' Sebastian said and Max complied. \n\nThe swallowing sound was boosted for the viewers at home. A few inches at a time the rabbit sank down into her co-star. The nation watched captivated as one of their favorite tv kids was eaten. The kids in the studio watched in fascination too, even the prey of the cast. For what little it was worth Max was being a gentleman about the whole affair and swallowed her quickly and only stopped for a few moments to bend down and let Milo remove her sneakers. The camera zoomed in close on Emily's feet as they passed Max's lips and descended down his throat. \n\nMax let out a loud belch which was met with laughter both by the kids on set and in the studio audience. Sebastian crossed his arms and gave a disapproving look before changing to a look of pride and ruffled Max's head.\n\nMax looked down to his squirming gut. ``Wow, she was really tasty. I can't thank you enough for letting me do this'' he said and stock stomach sounds were played in response. Everyone had a big laugh and the show cut to commercial as the camera slowly zoomed in on the moving belly.\n\nThe Martinez siblings looked to each other with astonishment. ``Do you really think Max ate her?'' Jose asked his step-sister.\n\nXimena shook her head in disbelief. ``No way, Jose. They'd never let a cub get eaten on TV, let alone digested. I'm sure she's fine''.\n\nAds for other Public Broadcast shows ran along with promotion of the website. When promotions for Sebastian's Magic Tree ran advertising the show's timeslot and website Emily was uncomfortably absent. The Martinez siblings looked at each other as the show resumed. \n\nThe shot opened on the kids standing around the kitchen. Of the five remaining only 4 plus Sebastian were eating pancakes. Max was still shirtless and his stomach had shrank by a noticeable amount but was obviously still ``occupied''.\n\nLuna looked over to Max and offered him a pancake. ``Don't you want one? These are your favorite'' she asked her co-star.\n\nMax just smiled and gave his belly a few pats. ``No, I'm still full from earlier. Besides, it feels wrong to pile another meal on top of her''.\n\nSebastian leaned in between the two. ``While that is very noble of you, she's just food now. Same as the pancakes I spent a lot of time making for you all'' the tiger said as a laugh track played.\n\nThe deer, Theo, looked up from his food and looked over at his mentor. ``I know Max's body is absorbing her but what exactly is going on inside of him?'' he asked sounding a lot more relaxed than before the commercial break.\n\nSebastian let out a big smile and pulled his laptop up from under the kitchen bar. The tiger led the group back to their giant couch. They usually sat together on the couch in a specific order; preds on the right, prey on the left, and Sebastian in the middle. Once they were all seated together he placed the clunky hunk of pre-Y2K tech on the coffee table and opened it up. The camera panned around the kids to an over-the-shoulder shot of the computer screen as it booted. The camera zoomed in on the laptop screen and show transitioned to an animated segment.\n\nDated, even for the 90s, cartoon drawings of Cartoon Max and Cartoon Emily appeared on screen. Cartoon Max tackled Cartoon Emily and the pair were covered by a cloud as random sound effects played. The smoke then faded to just Cartoon Max with a belly larger than he had in real life. He was picking his teeth with a toothpick as the camera zoomed in on his belly. A white glove with an electric shaver swiped over the large midsection to reveal an internal shot of Emily inside of the pink chamber.\n\nSebastian provided a voice over which was synchronized with the cartoon. ``Once prey is settled in, nice and cozy, inside of Max's stomach the process of digestion begins. Warm fluid fills the chamber as the walls of Max's stomach began to squeeze the meal. Digestion is a chemical and physical process where food is both dissolved and crushed before moving deeper into the intestines''.\n\nJust as described the cartoon stomach began to fill with bubbling, opaque, green acid up to cartoon Emily's neck. The walls of the stomach then began to squeeze and flex, stretching and compressing Cartoon Emily in a comical fashion. After this a dizzy Cartoon Emily sinks down into the acid. The camera zooms out and the cutaway disappears. Cartoon Max's stomach begins to shrink.\n\nThe show cut back to the cast on the couch together. Max's belly shrank another noticeable amount and the other kids turned in unison to look at it. Luna reached out a rubbed his belly. ``Wow, vore sure is complicated'' she said looking up at the show's host.\n\nSebastian nodded to her. ``That's right, it's a wonderful miracle of biology and a core part of our culture. That's why we need to be accepting of it, and each other''.\n\nMilo looked at Max, his belly, and then to Sebastian. ``I don't think vore is right for me''.\n\nThe host put his hand on Milo's shoulder and smiled. ``It's not for everyone. Not ever predator wants to vore their neighbors. As a pred its your decision on what you do with your body and your friends''.\n\nThe prey kids all looked at each other and then to their mentor. ``Are we gonna get eaten next?'' Oscar asked exaggerating nervousness.\n\nSebastian shot him a reassuring smile. ``Not if you don't want to. It's your decision too'' he said giving the beaver a pat on the head.\n\nTheo crossed his arms. ``I don't know if I feel safe hanging out with predators'' he said which was met with gasps and looks of hurt from the carnivorous kids. \n\nSebastian shot him a look. ``It's understandable to feel that way but it's not okay. Although any pred can vore mammals very few of them actually do and it's not right to judge anyone for actions they haven't done. We live in a big and diverse world and we need to accept all of our neighbors, no matter their fur, their size, or their diet''.\n\nTheo hesitated for a few minutes before remembering his lines. ``You're right, I'm sorry guys''.\n\nThe pred kids all smiled at Theo. ``I'll forgive you, if you let me eat your little sister'' Luna said which was met with a laugh track. The show froze on the still image of everyone laughing together. Still images of the episode played in a slideshow as the credits rolled. The scrolling white text was the same as every episode, save for Sasha McNeal's credit as playing Emily. A striking black bar redacted her real name and character name. The final credits to roll read: ``Thank you to the children of the crew who served themselves as volunteers for rehearsals''.\n\nThe studio vanity cards came and went before more ads started to roll for other Public Broadcast shows.\n\nXimena and Jose sat in stunned silence. They looked at each other as the reconciled their emotions. Jose was visibly upset by what he saw and Ximena was just shocked. ``They really ate her, didn't they?'' he asked his sister. The ocelot just hugged her brother tight.\n\n``The vore episode of Sebastian's Magic Tree'', as the public called it, made national headlines. Along with record viewership, the subsequent public conversations about vore, its role in society, and explaining vore to children put the long-running children's show who'd been seeing middling ratings back into the spotlight. That day's episode was meant to be the series finale with cancellation slated to be announced a few weeks after broadcast but the sudden attention on the show compelled a few more seasons of renewals until the rest of the cast aged out of their roles. The character Oscar would eventually be eaten in a holiday special in the second to last season and the surviving kids were blessed after the show's ending with respectable acting jobs. Sebastian would retire from acting once the show ended and focused more on producing and eventually directing.\n\nEmily's time in public memory wouldn't live beyond a few memorial websites, and even less for Oscar. Fans of the show and TV historians would later speculate on why Emily was ``written off'' so unexpectedly. The two most accepted theories were that she either was drastically unpopular compared to the rest of the cast or a possible romantic relationship with the actress who played Luna who came out as gay in the spring of 2008. Most people believe a combination of the two. Oscar had grown a sad look on his face. ``But doesn't that mean the prey goes away forever?'' he asked looking up at his mentor.

With a warm smile on his face Sebastian responded. ``Yes, but that's part of life. Since the beginning of life on this planet predators and prey have had this relationship, it's as natural as the sun and stars'' the mentor explained which was met by murmurs of agreement from the kids gathered, which was again loud enough for the audience to hear.

The kids and the adult all stood up together in unison. The actor playing Emily had a momentary streak of fear on her face before getting back in character. ``I wonder what it's like, being eaten'' she said trying to stay in character but her voice cracking a bit. The prey in the cast were also starting to crack a bit but it's not as noticeable. The predators in the cast had a different reaction with Milo and especially Max getting really excited, Luna was a bit hesitant.

Before Emily could finish speaking Max blurted out ``I can eat you Emily, you're my friend and I would be honored to''.

``Whatcha say, Emily?' Milo said, giving her a nudge in the shoulder.

The rest of the kids joined in on encouraging Emily to let herself get eaten with a clear line between who was and wasn't acting.

Sebastian knelt down next to her and rested his massive hand on her shoulder. ``Emily, it's your choice, no one can make you offer yourself as a meal. I know Max would feel really good if he ate you''.

Emily thought about it while making an exaggerated thinking pose. She returned to normal posture and said ``Okay, you can eat me Max'' she answered sounding calm but with an obvious fear smile on her face. Emily then hugged and said her goodbyes to her friends while sad music played in the background. Sebastian and Max walked off to the side and had a conversation the audience couldn't hear.

Once all of the goodbyes were said Emily and Max stood facing each other. Max wax clearly very excited while Emily tried her best to keep a brave face. The wolf removed his shirt to reveal his bit of paunch and picked up Emily. Sebastian was standing nearby to guide the wolf through the process.

The rabbit looked like she was screaming as she was shoved into the wolf's maw but the audio was cut from the broadcast. Emily's face was in the back of the mouth with most of her body hanging out. ``Okay Max, eating a rabbit is easy. While you have her in your mouth I want you to appreciate and savor her flavor. She gave herself to you and I want you treat her properly'' Sebastian explained. Max looked like he wasn't listening. He was new at this but thanks to the multiple children of the crew who ``volunteered'' as rehearsal meals Max wouldn't have any issues.

The camera panned and zoomed to get a good side profile of Max as he ate. A skilled use of focus allowed the Standard Definition camera to capture some detailed bulges of the bunny.

``Be careful, if you hold her in your mouth too long you'll run out of breath. Better swallow her'' Sebastian said and Max complied.

The swallowing sound was boosted for the viewers at home. A few inches at a time the rabbit sank down into her co-star. The nation watched captivated as one of their favorite tv kids was eaten. The kids in the studio watched in fascination too, even the prey of the cast. For what little it was worth Max was being a gentleman about the whole affair and swallowed her quickly and only stopped for a few moments to bend down and let Milo remove her sneakers. The camera zoomed in close on Emily's feet as they passed Max's lips and descended down his throat.

Max let out a loud belch which was met with laughter both by the kids on set and in the studio audience. Sebastian crossed his arms and gave a disapproving look before changing to a look of pride and ruffled Max's head.

Max looked down to his squirming gut. ``Wow, she was really tasty. I can't thank you enough for letting me do this'' he said and stock stomach sounds were played in response. Everyone had a big laugh and the show cut to commercial as the camera slowly zoomed in on the moving belly.

The Martinez siblings looked to each other with astonishment. ``Do you really think Max ate her?'' Jose asked his step-sister.

Ximena shook her head in disbelief. ``No way, Jose. They'd never let a cub get eaten on TV, let alone digested. I'm sure she's fine''.

Ads for other Public Broadcast shows ran along with promotion of the website. When promotions for Sebastian's Magic Tree ran advertising the show's timeslot and website Emily was uncomfortably absent. The Martinez siblings looked at each other as the show resumed.

The shot opened on the kids standing around the kitchen. Of the five remaining only 4 plus Sebastian were eating pancakes. Max was still shirtless and his stomach had shrank by a noticeable amount but was obviously still ``occupied''.

Luna looked over to Max and offered him a pancake. ``Don't you want one? These are your favorite'' she asked her co-star.

Max just smiled and gave his belly a few pats. ``No, I'm still full from earlier. Besides, it feels wrong to pile another meal on top of her''.

Sebastian leaned in between the two. ``While that is very noble of you, she's just food now. Same as the pancakes I spent a lot of time making for you all'' the tiger said as a laugh track played.

The deer, Theo, looked up from his food and looked over at his mentor. ``I know Max's body is absorbing her but what exactly is going on inside of him?'' he asked sounding a lot more relaxed than before the commercial break.

Sebastian let out a big smile and pulled his laptop up from under the kitchen bar. The tiger led the group back to their giant couch. They usually sat together on the couch in a specific order; preds on the right, prey on the left, and Sebastian in the middle. Once they were all seated together he placed the clunky hunk of pre-Y2K tech on the coffee table and opened it up. The camera panned around the kids to an over-the-shoulder shot of the computer screen as it booted. The camera zoomed in on the laptop screen and show transitioned to an animated segment.

Dated, even for the 90s, cartoon drawings of Cartoon Max and Cartoon Emily appeared on screen. Cartoon Max tackled Cartoon Emily and the pair were covered by a cloud as random sound effects played. The smoke then faded to just Cartoon Max with a belly larger than he had in real life. He was picking his teeth with a toothpick as the camera zoomed in on his belly. A white glove with an electric shaver swiped over the large midsection to reveal an internal shot of Emily inside of the pink chamber.

Sebastian provided a voice over which was synchronized with the cartoon. ``Once prey is settled in, nice and cozy, inside of Max's stomach the process of digestion begins. Warm fluid fills the chamber as the walls of Max's stomach began to squeeze the meal. Digestion is a chemical and physical process where food is both dissolved and crushed before moving deeper into the intestines''.

Just as described the cartoon stomach began to fill with bubbling, opaque, green acid up to cartoon Emily's neck. The walls of the stomach then began to squeeze and flex, stretching and compressing Cartoon Emily in a comical fashion. After this a dizzy Cartoon Emily sinks down into the acid. The camera zooms out and the cutaway disappears. Cartoon Max's stomach begins to shrink.

The show cut back to the cast on the couch together. Max's belly shrank another noticeable amount and the other kids turned in unison to look at it. Luna reached out a rubbed his belly. ``Wow, vore sure is complicated'' she said looking up at the show's host.

Sebastian nodded to her. ``That's right, it's a wonderful miracle of biology and a core part of our culture. That's why we need to be accepting of it, and each other''.

Milo looked at Max, his belly, and then to Sebastian. ``I don't think vore is right for me''.

The host put his hand on Milo's shoulder and smiled. ``It's not for everyone. Not ever predator wants to vore their neighbors. As a pred its your decision on what you do with your body and your friends''.

The prey kids all looked at each other and then to their mentor. ``Are we gonna get eaten next?'' Oscar asked exaggerating nervousness.

Sebastian shot him a reassuring smile. ``Not if you don't want to. It's your decision too'' he said giving the beaver a pat on the head.

Theo crossed his arms. ``I don't know if I feel safe hanging out with predators'' he said which was met with gasps and looks of hurt from the carnivorous kids.

Sebastian shot him a look. ``It's understandable to feel that way but it's not okay. Although any pred can vore mammals very few of them actually do and it's not right to judge anyone for actions they haven't done. We live in a big and diverse world and we need to accept all of our neighbors, no matter their fur, their size, or their diet''.

Theo hesitated for a few minutes before remembering his lines. ``You're right, I'm sorry guys''.

The pred kids all smiled at Theo. ``I'll forgive you, if you let me eat your little sister'' Luna said which was met with a laugh track. The show froze on the still image of everyone laughing together. Still images of the episode played in a slideshow as the credits rolled. The scrolling white text was the same as every episode, save for Sasha McNeal's credit as playing Emily. A striking black bar redacted her real name and character name. The final credits to roll read: ``Thank you to the children of the crew who served themselves as volunteers for rehearsals''.

The studio vanity cards came and went before more ads started to roll for other Public Broadcast shows.

Ximena and Jose sat in stunned silence. They looked at each other as the reconciled their emotions. Jose was visibly upset by what he saw and Ximena was just shocked. ``They really ate her, didn't they?'' he asked his sister. The ocelot just hugged her brother tight.

``The vore episode of Sebastian's Magic Tree'', as the public called it, made national headlines. Along with record viewership, the subsequent public conversations about vore, its role in society, and explaining vore to children put the long-running children's show who'd been seeing middling ratings back into the spotlight. That day's episode was meant to be the series finale with cancellation slated to be announced a few weeks after broadcast but the sudden attention on the show compelled a few more seasons of renewals until the rest of the cast aged out of their roles. The character Oscar would eventually be eaten in a holiday special in the second to last season and the surviving kids were blessed after the show's ending with respectable acting jobs. Sebastian would retire from acting once the show ended and focused more on producing and eventually directing.

Emily's time in public memory wouldn't live beyond a few memorial websites, and even less for Oscar. Fans of the show and TV historians would later speculate on why Emily was ``written off'' so unexpectedly. The two most accepted theories were that she either was drastically unpopular compared to the rest of the cast or a possible romantic relationship with the actress who played Luna who came out as gay in the spring of 2008. Most people believe a combination of the two. Either way, kids around the world all remember where they were when a publicly funded show to teach tolerance and unity between pred and prey ate one of its stars on national television.
