She loves gardening. She dislikes people. : https://inkbunny.net/submissionview.php?id=1200731\n\nIt was almost Halloween. Just a few more weeks. Rene peered out of the darkened window of her trailer. Her parents hadn't been home for weeks, but that was normal. They were always working far, far away from home, she just lied if anyone asked. They were sleeping. They were out. They'd be back tomorrow . Most people has stopped asking. They paid her bills and sent her allowance, that was all that she cared about. \nRene did have one problem though. She wanted a pumpkin, and in order to procure a pumpkin, she would have to go out. She could find a pumpkin in Burton, that was a farming time, but to go to Burton, she would have to take the bus, and she would have to go during the day. She didn't like that idea. She scowled out the window.\nEastwood perhaps? The big city was certain to have a store that would be open late at night and would have her desired produce. She'd have to take the bus to go there as well though, but..going in late, late at night might mean the bus would be more empty. Maybe. That was something to consider.\nShe scolded herself for not thinking ahead to grow some pumpkins. Sure there wasn't a lot of room in the trailer to do that. She looked around her kitchen, nearly every flat surface was covered in old metal coffee cans, each bursting with plant life that she carefully tended. She had flowers, peppers, spices, some veggies, berries (though the larger plants were grown in storage tubs), all sorts of succulents, she loved to garden and each new planet was an exciting challenge. She could have found some room in the living room and made some sort of storage for pumpkins if she'd thought ahead. Damn.\nShe moved away from the window and out of the booth that connected to the wall of her trailer, and moved to her fridge and pulled it open. It was barren save for a container of berries, and a few limp looking carrots. She needed to go shopping, another reason she would be forced out. \nRene went to her bedroom and carefully dug beneath the mattress of her waterbed and pulled out a small stack of cash, mostly it was hundreds. She didn't like to bring hundreds, so she sorted lower through the pile. What did she need? Coffee. Of course. she always needed that, what else? she thought as she dug through the pile to find the twenties and set them aside, before rehiding the large wad. She could make her list on the bus. A list would allow her to get in and out quickly. She'd shower, then dress, then she would have a cup of coffee and wait until around eleven to head to the truck stop, she'd have to wait for the bus, but, she'd be in the city by 3 in the morning, the perfect time to shop. Yes that was a good plan. She went over it a few more times.\n-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------\nShe arrived at the grocery store just past three as she had expected to. Rene was dressed in a grey sweater, tight black pants and knee high black boots, her blue-green hair shining in it's neat bob from the fluorescent lights. They are somewhat comforting with their gentle hum. They speak of big business and a general lack of interest. No one would bother her. She took in a deep breath, the air smelled of cleaner. \nThe slim young frog walked through the isles, pushing a cart which dragged to the left, and browsed. She'd made a list, yes, just as she'd planned but, on second inspection her list had read 'Coffee, pumpkin, bread' and that really wasn't enough to make it through the month. The pumpkin was the most exciting prospect. She would carve a jack o'lantern, cook some of the seeds and plant the rest when there was time for it. She would save the pumpkin for last. A reward for finishing her shopping.\n-------------------------------------------------------------------\nRene took a long time, she moved down each isle and read the backs of many boxes. She wasn't really all that interested in the health benefits of the food, but the advertising amused her. When she'd finished her cart still looked quite empty. Rene was not very good at shopping. She'd managed several kinds of coffee, most in tins, a few which were flavored, cereal, bread, milk, a few packaged food items, and a large brick of chocolate.\nShe liked cereal it was handy and didn't require work. She liked coffee more and if she drank enough, she wasn't hungry. None of that mattered at the moment though. Now it was time for her prize. It was time to pick out her pumpkin. She turned her wobbly cart around and headed in the direction of the produce. What size pumpkin should she get? what color? She liked those white pumpkins, but they weren't the classic. She could get, she thought a moment, two pumpkins, but no. that was too greedy and would be too hard to carry back home. It had to be a manageable pumpkin.\nRene's face lit up in delight when she saw the pumpkin display, there were hundreds of them, all sizes and well, not all colors but plenty of them! She began to pick through them. A green pumpkin would not do. She would not have a green pumpkin. An orange pumpkin was a classic, and of course that had the most to choose from but...her eyes traveled to the white pumpkins. They were very pretty, and she couldn't remember seeing them as often when she was a little girl. She'd have a white one she decided, and very soon she found the perfect one. It was smooth and flat, perfect for carving and just large enough that she could carry it home under one arm which would allow her other hand to be free to carry her groceries. Perfect. She placed the pumpkin in her cart, and headed for the register. \n---------------------------------------------------\nAs Rene headed homeward on the bus, she was tired, but content. Tonight's trip had been an overall success. She'd only had to talk to two people, the bus driver and the cashier and neither had wanted an acutal conversation. She' gotten her groceries, and most importantly she'd gotten her pumpkin. Nothing could go wrong now. She scanned the nearly empty bus as they drove. There weren't many people on it, and the ones who were there, she recognized either from the park, or the truck stop. No one new ever rode out this far, and they wouldn't talk to her, nor she to them. \nThe bus drove on in it's slow way and Rene looked out the window, watching the sun starting to rise out on the horizon. She couldn't wait for Halloween. She didn't like the people part of it so much, but it was always so much fun, and of course, she could dress in a costume if she wanted and get some candy. She only had a year or two of left for that in her, but that made it all the more tempting. Yes, the next few weeks would be a very lovely time for her.
