His pale pink eyes watched as a gentle breeze rolled one of the beer cans across the dead-grass lawn and rested his face in his hands. He didn't remeber there being so many cans in the yard a few weeks ago, but, Roy hadn't been home so much, so no one had been picking them up. \nAnother can rolled through the grass and down the walk, heading out into the little road that ran throught he trailer park and eventually bounced off one of the trailers not far from them. Their yard was a wreck too, so, it hardly mattered. He kicked at the dirt a little and considered his options for entertainment for the day. Inside, he could hear his oldest sister talking loudly on the phone, so she was proubly leaving, which was always a good thing, and even though it was almost five o'clock, there was still no sign of Roy, which could mean he'd be the oldest person home tonight. He hoped not. He hated being the oldest. Maybe, just maybe one of his sisters would stick around. \nThere was yelling in the house, now, either his mom or his oldest sister, he couldn't tell, and it didn't really matter. He heard his younger brother, Terry, crying then. Time to leave. \nSpencer hopped up onto his feet and started walking very quickly away from the trailer, with no idea of where he was going to go, but anywhere had to be better than being slated as the babysitter for the night. He didn't want to fill up sippy cups and pray his youngest sister would use her potty seat instead of leaving him a nasty mess to clean. \nSpencer left the trailerpark and headed for the bus-stop. He couldn't take the bus, as the dollar in his pocket wouldn't get him very far, but the truck stop was only about a half hour away, and it wasn't too hot to walk there, or, he figured if he was up for more of a hike, perhaps he could hitch a ride with someone into Burton. Of course he wasn't sposed to take rides from strangers, and he knew that Roy would be awful mad if he found out about the times that he'd done it in the past. Burton was boring anyways. Nothing but farms and little boring stores. At least they had a comic book shop though, even if it wasn't a very good one. \nEither way, Burton was out. He'd have to go to the truck stop. He didn't mind very much, sometimes the waitresses there would pat his head or give him free drinks. He didn't think they did it becuse they felt sorry for him though, so that made it okay. He turned in that direction and started walking. Only a few more months left that he would be able to do that. Once winter came, walking this distance would be too much of a pain.\n--------------------------------------------------\nThe truckstop was a hive of activity as always. Huge trucks liked the outer lot and even if the bright light the old neon letters advertising the 'crown jewel' diner were blinking and flickering in their pleasant way. Spencer crossed the asphalt quickly and hurried for the diner. It was good place to people watch, and, he had just enough money that he could proubly get a small order of fries, or at the very least he could proubly get a grilled cheese.\nHe ducked into the diner and looked it over fondly. He loved it here, the vintage checker floor, the way everything shone in chrome, and the tinny sounding old jukebox at the back. He wondered if this place had been updated at all scince it was orginally built, whenever age ago that had been, but decided it must have been, as it was all still so shiny and new looking. He moved to his favorite seat, the one that hugged the rounded edge of the front wall and had the most window, and sighed happy to get off his feet and lean against the baby blue vinyl of the booth. \nThe faces here, for the most part seemed to be the ones that he was used to. The friendly waitresses, the tired looking truckers, and the ocassional face of one of the teenagers that frequented the motel back behind the stop. None of them held much interest for him. He looked down at the menu on the table infront of him and tried to figure out what with careful planning he'd be able to get. However on his next scan, someone he was very sure that he hadn't seen before caught his eye.\nA girl, about his age, maybe a little older was sitting a few booths back and sipping a cup of what looked like coffee as she stared out the window. She was a squirrel. He could tell that in and instant, and he liked the way her bags were choppy anf fell into her face, and the cute way she had it spiked in the back. it was very punky. He also liked her nice purple jacket with all the patches and chains. It reminded him, just a little of the clothes that his brother wore but..more soft and girly. \nHe stared at the girl, wondering why anyone would want to drink that hideously bitter stuff when they had soda on the menu, and then turned to look out the window, wondering what it was that had her attention. Nothing interesting out there as far as he could tell, just trucks and dust and...he paused. Roy. So this is where his brother had been hiding. \n----------------------------------------------------------------------------\n\nRoy was sitting on the ground not far away from the diner, holding rag to his face, and bleeding into it. His face, was looking somewhat rough, but he, had to hope at least he was looking better than the other guy. Roy hated getting into fights, but he could only put up with so much bullshit in one day. He sighed and pressed the cloth harder to his nose. He'd have to clean up in the bathroom, he didn't want to go home looking like this and let anyone see him, or worse start asking questions. \nThat fuckin' squirrel was here too. That didn't help matters. He'd thought he'd finally shaken him when he got on the bus, but two stops later and there he was, and then suddenly he was there sitting next to him. He didn't want -that- following him home either. Alls he'd wanted to do today was hit the music shop. Why couldn't it have just been that easy?\nWorse yet, that squirrel had gotten to watch him get into that stupid fist fight with that stupid dog from school. Of course he'd have been in the city that day. With everything else going wrong why wouldn't he have been in that city, on that bus, and wanting to have the last free seat, the one right behind Roy. He'd done his best to just keep his head low and ignore the asshole at first, but it didn't help. With his hair and choice in clothing he stuck out like a sore thumb. it was only a matter of seconds before the stupid jerk had recognized him and started shit.\nRoy just wanted to go home. He didn't want to hear about how he was poor, or how his mother was a drunken whore, or the fact he dressed like it was halloween all year long, but he could have tolerated that. He could have let that be, it was when that dog mentioned Terry, when he'd called him stupid, and slow. Roy couldn't deal with that, He'd been out of his seat like a shot, and several punches later, had himself a bloody nose,a sore eye and temporary bus ban, and of course, the squirrel had followed him off the bus.\nHis nose would have to stop bleeding eventually he figured, then he could clean up and think about getting home, if he could only figure out what to do about the squirrel. He pulled his knees up and rested his head between them, his long, lop ears hitting the ground and his dreads following suit. Today had been so stupid. He sighed and sat up and forced himself up onto his feet. He really was exhausted, the walk had been impossibly long to get to the bus stop, and on top of the fight, he wished he could just drop dead and sleep for a few days. \nAs he turned he saw the squirrel watching him from the window and waved at him..and then as he looked, he went wide eyed when he saw his younger brother sitting a few booths down. Fucking hell, this day just wasn't going to get better. He breifly hoped that his brother haden't noticed him yet and that he'd be able to slip away, but no. that was not the case. It was never the case. Things could never be easy. He waved at Spencer and then headed for the diner. He was going to have to face the music sooner or later anyways. \n----------------------------------------------------\nSpencer was shocked when Roy had stood up and turned around, and he wanted nothing more than to duck under the table and hide from the awkward conversation that he knew was coming his way. Roy had been fighting, again, and that ment his mother would be screaming, his sister would be teasing,Terry would be crying, and Roy would be grumbling when they got back home. He didn't want to deal with that. He couldn't escape though and he knew that, so he just leaned back and looked away from his brother while he made his way inside.\nRoy really was a mess this time. He wondered breifly if his brother's nose was broken, and if he was able to see out of that eye. There was so much blood. He stared down at the table, until he felt the weight of roy slipping into the booth with him. \"Hey Pen..\" Roy said. He was tryig to sound cheerful. Spencer hated when he tried to sound cheerful, he could never buy it, not like Terry. Not like stupid, babyish Terry who was only a year younger than him but acted like a dumb four year old. \n\"Hi..\" He looked at his brother through his dark hair for a few seconds before turing his gaze back to the table.\n-----------------------------------------\n\"I'll buy you a milkshake and fries if you go along with my fell off the bus story I'm gonna tell Mom.\" Roy said smiling awkardly. \"aaand I'll do the dishes on your night.\" He tapped the table with his knuckles. \"Pen..I uh..you're mad huh? You..wern't soposed to be here or see this or....\" he sighed and looked at the squirrel who, amazingly had had the decency not to come barging over.\nSpencer shrugged \"whatever..\" he said and pushed one of the creamers on the table around. \nRoy hated that dissapointed look on Spencer's face. He wrapped an arm around his shoulders, only to get shrugged off. \"I'm sorry man. I didn't mean to..\"\n\nSpencer changed the subject \"whos that girl at the table? Your girlfriend? She's all dressed up like you.\" he didn't want to talk about the fight or about anything. The girl was looking at them from time to time, but she seemed to be more or less minding her own bussiness. She also was a little too young to be dating his brother, at least he sure thought so. \n\nRoy looked at the squirrel and sighed \"No. I don't know who that is. Just some boy. He was at one of my concerts a couple of days ago. I guess we are friends now or somthing becuse I sure can't seem to get rid of him, no matter how unwanted he obviously is.\" Roy raised his voice on the latter half to make sure that the squirrel could hear him, and almost immeidately felt guilty for it. \n \n\"He?\" Spencer asked his ears perking up some \"thats a boy?\" he asked in a hushed whisper \"but he's so..so...you know?\" he didn't want to say 'pretty' that would be weird. He rubbed his arm and looked over at the squirrel, and then back at Roy rather confused about their connection \"Shouldn't we invite him over here..you..are friends right?\"\n\nRoy shrugged \"Sure..I'm gonna go clean up in the bathroom anyways.\" He looked at the squirrel and then waved him over. \"Uh...you.\" he said looking at the squirrel \"this is my brother..Pen. Uh, if you don't already know that.\" He frowned ,wondering how much this squirrel did know about him anyways. \"I'm going to go wash my face, just..stay here or whatever..I'll buy everyone dinner when I get back..\" that offer was a bit hard. he didn't have much money left this week but..what else could he do at this point. It was for Spencer and not the squirrel aways, so it was fine. He slid out of the booth and headed for the bathroom, hoping his face looked better than it felt and that he would be able to avoid any more awkardness once he got home.\n\n-----------------------------------\nSpencer stared at the girly boy at the table with him. Could that really, possibly be a boy? He didn't think so. He blushed when he felt the squirrel's forresty greens on him and fidgeted in his seat, unable to make himself form words. He stared down at the table, annnoyed with himself.\nThe squirrel looked a uncomfortable, annd maybe a bit shy himself. \"Uh. Hi.\" he said looking at Spencer. Even his voice was high and girly. \"I'm uh P.B. at least thats what some of my friends call me.\" He smiled akwardly \"So uh, your Roy's brother huh?\" He was talking fast, and Spencer could hear the nerves in his voice, clearly he hadn't been ready to deal with any of Roy's family. \"He's pretty uh..\" he stopped when he relized maybe he shouldn't say what he had been going to \"brave. He took on this big huge fuckin dog..I thought he was going to be pounded into paste!\" he laughed. It was a rather annyoing sound. All chittery and weird. He looked down at the table as well, before looking back out the window \"Um..how old are you? Twelve? I'm twelve..\"\n\"Eleven.\" Spencer said looking at the squirrel, who was a just a little taller than he was.\n\"Oh.\" The squirrel said, sounding dissapointed. \"Oh well.\" He shrugged still looking out the window. \"Should I take off...?\" he asked \nSpencer felt uncomfortable being asked to make that kind of choice he shrugged and continued to stare down at the table.\nThe squirrel smiled akwardly, showing his big buck teeth \"Guess I will. Super nice to meet you though..\" he leaned in close then and brushed Spencer's long bags out of his face and whistled \"Wow.Cuties run in your family huh?\" he asked, laughing again. What a weird sound. \nSpencer recoiled when he was touched and stared at the squirrel in horror.\nThe squirrel continued his weird laugh. \"Oh geez. Calm down. I'm not gonna bite you.\" He shrugged and then shoved his hands into his coat \"Aaaanyways. I got a bus to catch.\" He said and nodded \"Nice meetin' you. Hope to see you around again somtime.\" He nodded, and then headed off.\nSpencer stared after him, looking him over again, this time from behind and went a bit pink at the cheeks. He really was girly, even from behind and he sort of liked the way he looked in those skinny jeans as he walked away, but no. Spencer wasn't going to think about that right now. He turned away and looked back at the table, with this strange feeling things were going to keep getting weirder for awhile. \n","writing_bbcode_parsed":"All Folks in this story are mine.
Spencer-11-a delicately built himalayan patterned rabbit. Roy had been fighting, again, and that ment his mother would be screaming, his sister would be teasing,Terry would be crying, and Roy would be grumbling when they got back home. He didn't want to deal with that. He couldn't escape though and he knew that, so he just leaned back and looked away from his brother while he made his way inside.
Roy really was a mess this time. He wondered breifly if his brother's nose was broken, and if he was able to see out of that eye. There was so much blood. He stared down at the table, until he felt the weight of roy slipping into the booth with him. "Hey Pen.." Roy said. He was tryig to sound cheerful. Spencer hated when he tried to sound cheerful, he could never buy it, not like Terry. Not like stupid, babyish Terry who was only a year younger than him but acted like a dumb four year old.
"Hi.." He looked at his brother through his dark hair for a few seconds before turing his gaze back to the table.
-----------------------------------------
"I'll buy you a milkshake and fries if you go along with my fell off the bus story I'm gonna tell Mom." Roy said smiling awkardly. "aaand I'll do the dishes on your night." He tapped the table with his knuckles. "Pen..I uh..you're mad huh? You..wern't soposed to be here or see this or...." he sighed and looked at the squirrel who, amazingly had had the decency not to come barging over.
Spencer shrugged "whatever.." he said and pushed one of the creamers on the table around.
Roy hated that dissapointed look on Spencer's face. He wrapped an arm around his shoulders, only to get shrugged off. "I'm sorry man. I didn't mean to.."

Spencer changed the subject "whos that girl at the table? Your girlfriend? She's all dressed up like you." he didn't want to talk about the fight or about anything. The girl was looking at them from time to time, but she seemed to be more or less minding her own bussiness. She also was a little too young to be dating his brother, at least he sure thought so.

Roy looked at the squirrel and sighed "No. I don't know who that is. Just some boy. He was at one of my concerts a couple of days ago. I guess we are friends now or somthing becuse I sure can't seem to get rid of him, no matter how unwanted he obviously is." Roy raised his voice on the latter half to make sure that the squirrel could hear him, and almost immeidately felt guilty for it.

"He?" Spencer asked his ears perking up some "thats a boy?" he asked in a hushed whisper "but he's so..so...you know?" he didn't want to say 'pretty' that would be weird. He rubbed his arm and looked over at the squirrel, and then back at Roy rather confused about their connection "Shouldn't we invite him over here..you..are friends right?"

Roy shrugged "Sure..I'm gonna go clean up in the bathroom anyways." He looked at the squirrel and then waved him over. "Uh...you." he said looking at the squirrel "this is my brother..Pen. Uh, if you don't already know that." He frowned ,wondering how much this squirrel did know about him anyways. "I'm going to go wash my face, just..stay here or whatever..I'll buy everyone dinner when I get back.." that offer was a bit hard. he didn't have much money left this week but..what else could he do at this point. It was for Spencer and not the squirrel aways, so it was fine. He slid out of the booth and headed for the bathroom, hoping his face looked better than it felt and that he would be able to avoid any more awkardness once he got home.

-----------------------------------
Spencer stared at the girly boy at the table with him. Could that really, possibly be a boy? He didn't think so. He blushed when he felt the squirrel's forresty greens on him and fidgeted in his seat, unable to make himself form words. He stared down at the table, annnoyed with himself.
The squirrel looked a uncomfortable, annd maybe a bit shy himself. "Uh. Hi." he said looking at Spencer. Even his voice was high and girly. "I'm uh P.B. at least thats what some of my friends call me." He smiled akwardly "So uh, your Roy's brother huh?" He was talking fast, and Spencer could hear the nerves in his voice, clearly he hadn't been ready to deal with any of Roy's family. "He's pretty uh.." he stopped when he relized maybe he shouldn't say what he had been going to "brave. He took on this big huge fuckin dog..I thought he was going to be pounded into paste!" he laughed. It was a rather annyoing sound. All chittery and weird. He looked down at the table as well, before looking back out the window "Um..how old are you? Twelve? I'm twelve.."
"Eleven." Spencer said looking at the squirrel, who was a just a little taller than he was.
"Oh." The squirrel said, sounding dissapointed. "Oh well." He shrugged still looking out the window. "Should I take off...?" he asked
Spencer felt uncomfortable being asked to make that kind of choice he shrugged and continued to stare down at the table.
The squirrel smiled akwardly, showing his big buck teeth "Guess I will. Super nice to meet you though.." he leaned in close then and brushed Spencer's long bags out of his face and whistled "Wow.Cuties run in your family huh?" he asked, laughing again. What a weird sound.
Spencer recoiled when he was touched and stared at the squirrel in horror.
The squirrel continued his weird laugh. "Oh geez. Calm down. I'm not gonna bite you." He shrugged and then shoved his hands into his coat "Aaaanyways. I got a bus to catch." He said and nodded "Nice meetin' you. Hope to see you around again somtime." He nodded, and then headed off.
Spencer stared after him, looking him over again, this time from behind and went a bit pink at the cheeks. He really was girly, even from behind and he sort of liked the way he looked in those skinny jeans as he walked away, but no. Spencer wasn't going to think about that right now. He turned away and looked back at the table, with this strange feeling things were going to keep getting weirder for awhile.
","pools_count":0,"title":"Awkwardness and Asphalt","deleted":"f","public":"t","mimetype":"text/rtf","pagecount":"1","rating_id":"1","rating_name":"Mature","ratings":[{"content_tag_id":"3","name":"Violence","description":"Mild violence","rating_id":"1"}],"submission_type_id":"12","type_name":"Writing - Document","guest_block":"t","friends_only":"f","comments_count":"0","views":"126","sales_description":null,"forsale":"f","digitalsales":"f","printsales":"f","digital_price":""}
